13 Dead In Washington Navy Yard Shootings Including Gunman
[BREITBART] A former Navy man launched an attack Monday morning inside a building at the Washington Navy Yard, spraying gunfire on office workers in the cafeteria and in the hallway at the heavily secured installation, authorities said. Thirteen people were killed, including the gunman.

Authorities said they were looking for a second possible attacker who may have been disguised in a military-style uniform.

Investigators said they had not established a motive for the shooting rampage, which unfolded in the heart of the nation's capital, less than four miles from the White House.

As for whether it may have been a terrorist attack, Mayor Vincent Gray said: "We don't have any reason to think that at this stage." But he said the possibility had not been ruled out.

President Barack Obama
Why can't I just eat my waffle?...
lamented yet another mass shooting in the U.S. that he said took the lives of American patriots. He promised to make sure "whoever carried out this cowardly act is held responsible."

It was the deadliest shooting at a U.S.-based military installation since Maj. Nidal Hasan killed 13 people and maimed 30 others in 2009 at Fort Hood in Texas. He was convicted last month and sentenced to death.

#1  Gunf-free zone becomes a free fire killng zone in istaces like these. Thats one of the things I hated about working on post: my carry permit meant nothing, and I could not evenn bring the firearm onto base as a civilian contractor, not even locked in my trunk, per base regulations. So I was basically disarmed my entire trip to and from, in addition to being disarmed while I was there. Theory was those teenaged SP's (USAF base) manning the gate could prevent all weapons from entering, and would provide armed response to prevent any major problems. Yeah right. Fortunately I worked in a SCIF, and at this site we had real armed guards, sidearms and M4 inside the gate thru the perimeter triple fence and again at the entrance.

#4  Any evidence of SJS? (Sudden Jihad Syndrome) or do we simply have a "batman" killer case (re: Aurora, and the quote "Some people just want to see the world burn"). Apparently this guy was USN, 2007-11, made PO3. Not sure rate or nature of service and discharge.

It did take planning, and a bit of subterfuge to get past security. Not sure how the Navy runs things, but if its mainly civilians there, then things may have gotten lax so as to not inconvenience the DoD civvys. But you'd have to be pretty lax for a guy to smuggle in a long gun, as is alleged to b]have been used, unless he brought it in part by part (major components) and stashed it for assembly later, on the day of his planned attack.
Posted by: OldSpook || 09/17/2013 0:24 Comments || Top||

#5  Also, there is no trusting press to actually report accurately when it comes to firearms, since they have no idea what they are talking about. "Long gun" could mean anything from a barrett to a mac-10 to them - and guaranteed whatever it is, it will be called an "assault rifle"..

Anyone heard the caliber? 9mm means carbine/camp gun is possible (and the smuggled in by major components becomes a very real possibility if he had repeated access). Real rifle round means a much more sturdy weapon (and an even bigger security breach).

#7  As we examine lessons learned, it would appear that in a purely gov't controlled environment, gov't regulations will NOT protect you from either the evil and mayhem of murdering lunatics or the gov't itself.

Unfortunately the fix will undoubtedly be new and more intrusive regulations. While only one aspect of the challenge, the recruitment and hiring of lunatics such as the Navy Yard shooter, or Fort Hood's Nidal Hasan, and even the despicable Snowden will continue.

"And so we are confronting yet another mass shooting - and today it happened on a gov't installation in our nation's capital"
- President Obama

From his lofty pulpit, he adds to the list of "yet anothers". He illustrates and reminds us that we have a problem, not that gov't has failed or he has a solution.

The fact that at the micro, the gov't cannot protect innocent men and women whose job is to protect us at the macro, quite telling indeed. Perhaps the goal is not actually protection at all, but rather the perception of protection, as provided at a premium of both freedom and treasure by the gov't.

#10  Protected Class shooter is reported to have been recently hired by the Navy Yard Civilian Personnel Office (CPO). Shooter was said to have been under treatment by the VA for mental disorders. Shooter was also said to have civilian arrests for weapons violations and US Navy disciplinary issues.

Appears no one in the US Navy system or VA elected to report any derogatory information [DEROG] to the Central Clearance Facility (CCF), which would have resulted in his security clearance being suspended or pulled.

USN Bureau of Personnel, VA, Washington Navy Yard CPO or Contracting Officer's Representative (COR)..... looking the other way? Protected Classes looking out for Protected Classes ?

Security Clearance is a condition of employment. In this case, a ticket to murder.

#12  I thought yesterday's Law Enforcement news conference was interesting. The D.C. police chief, the District Park Police Chief, FBI spokesperson all appeared to share something more in common than their law enforcement backgrounds. In another setting, the gruff monotone of the FBI spokesperson would have been comical.

U.S. law enforcement officials are telling The Associated Press that the Navy contractor identified as the gunman in the mass shootings at the Washington Navy Yard had been suffering a host of serious mental issues, including paranoia and a sleep disorder. He also had been hearing voices in his head, the officials said.

In other words, Mr. Alexis is yet another whose schizophrenia became overwhelming and drove him to kill. Very lucky he was killed by the policeman who shot him.

#18  As in Ft Hood, there were many, many warnings about the shooter being a threat that was ignored by the regime. Even the most powerful military on earth is totally defenseless against deadly incompetence. Just as a sentry that was found sleeping during war time, ome one needs to hang.

#19  It's a sad commentary indeed that so many in society will blame everything and everyone except the obvious.

This man was apparently a chronic, paranoid schizophrenic. That's a medical diagnosis and of course we'll need to go back carefully through his behavior and medical records to confirm (if that can be done).

Schizophrenics are tough. They can hold it together for long stretches of time and may only decompensate occasionally. When they do they may not be homicidal or harmful. But when they are, look out.

We used to institutionalize schizophrenics as a matter of course. We were unwilling to take the risk that a very few of them would cause harm. Now it seems we've gone completely the other way -- we'll tolerate the harm that the few do, when they do, rather than deny any of them their civil rights.

Worse yet, when they commit harm we'll blame something like the weapon, or the mental health system, rather than them.

It's foolish. Schizophrenics need much more intense medical therapy. They need to be identified better, screened better, treated better, and have better surveillance. While most are harmless, there should be no qualms about institutionalizing the ones who are, and there should be a low threshold to do so (and a high bar to un-do).

Until we do that we'll continue to have the occasional school or workplace shooting. The liberals and the media (but I repeat myself) will continue to blame AR-15 shotguns.

Fools. And I don't mean the schizophrenics.

Suspected Bank Robber Nabbed After Leaving Keys To Getaway Car in Bank
[BREITBART] Police say a suspected serial bank robber is in jug after leaving the keys to his getaway car in the bank he allegedly just robbed. According to police front man, Sgt. Pete Simpson, 57-year-old Frank Laviguer robbed the Wells Fargo branch on 11th Ave. in Portland last Monday but had to flee on foot after leaving his car keys inside the bank. Simpson also said Laviguer showed tellers a gun during the robbery, but later determined that it was a replica.

Investigators, in conjunction with the FBI, now suspect the flat footed Laviguer is responsible for a string of robberies that includes two other banks and two motels in the Pacific Northwest

Russian Shot In Quarrel Over Kant's Philosophy
[HOSTED.AP.ORG] An argument in southern Russia over philosopher Immanuel Kant, the author of "Critique of Pure Reason," devolved into pure mayhem when one debater shot the other.

A police spokeswoman in Rostov-on Don, Viktoria Safarova, said two men in their 20s were discussing Kant as they stood in line to buy beer at a small store on Sunday. The discussion deteriorated into a fistfight and one participant pulled out a small nonlethal pistol and fired repeatedly.

The victim was hospitalized with injuries that were not life-threatening. Neither person was identified.

It was not clear which of Kant's ideas may have triggered the violence.

13-Year-Old Indian Girl Begins Microbiology Master's
[An Nahar] In a country where many girls are still discouraged from going to school, Sushma Verma is having anything but a typical childhood.

The 13-year-old girl from a poor family in north India has enrolled in a master's degree in microbiology, after her father sold his land to pay for some of his daughter's tuition in the hope of catapulting her into India's growing middle class.

Verma finished high school at 7 and earned an undergraduate degree at age 13 -- milestones she said were possible only with the sacrifices and encouragement of her uneducated and impoverished parents.

"They allowed me to do what I wanted to do," Verma said in an interview Sunday, speaking her native language of Hindi. "I hope that other parents don't impose their choices on their children."

Sushma lives a very modest life with her three younger siblings and her parents -- eating, sleeping and studying alongside them in a cramped single-room apartment in Lucknow, the capital of Uttar Pradesh state.

Their only income is her father's daily wage of up to 200 rupees (less than $3.50) for laboring on construction sites. Their most precious possessions include a study table and a second-hand computer.

It is not a great atmosphere for studying, she admitted. "There are a lot of dreams ... All of them cannot be fulfilled."

But having no television and little else at home has advantages, she said. "There is nothing to do but study."

Sushma begins her studies next week at Lucknow's B. R. Ambedkar Central University, though her father is already ferrying her to and from campus each day on his bicycle so she can meet with teachers before classes begin.

Her first choice was to become a doctor, but she cannot take the test to qualify for medical school until she is 18.

"So I opted for the MSc and then I will do a doctorate," she said.

Sushma -- a skinny, poised girl with shoulder-length hair -- is not the first high-achiever in her family. Her older brother graduated from high school at 9, and in 2007 became one of India's youngest computer science graduates at 14.

In another family, Sushma might not have been able to follow him into higher education. Millions of Indian children are still not enrolled in grade school, and many of them are girls whose parents choose to hold them back in favor of advancing their sons. Some from conservative village cultures are expected only to get married, for which their families will go into debt to pay exorbitant dowry payments, even though they are illegal.

Africa Subsaharan
Opposition, Government Supporters Clash ahead of Guinea Vote
[An Nahar] Pro-government and opposition supporters clashed on the streets of Guinea's capital on Monday, medical and police sources said, sparking fears over unrest in the west African nation a week ahead of nationwide elections.

Guinea's largest market was forced to close and traders fled to safety as rioters pelted cars with stones and looted stores in Conakry's busy Madina district, an Agence La Belle France Presse news hound on the scene witnessed.

"It all kicked off with the posting of election campaign banners by the activists of a political party which their opponents tore up and even tore down the hoardings," a police brass hat told AFP.

"They were attacked with sticks and then stones that maimed many on both sides."

The bloodshed spread to other parts of Conakry where youths overturned bins and put up barricades, blocking traffic on the main route between central Guinea and the airport.

"Some of the injured had open wounds on their foreheads caused by sharp objects or stones," said Karamoko Yaya Barry, a doctor who said 11 of the maimed were being treated in two clinics.

Legislative polls were initially due to have been held within six months of the swearing-in of President Alpha Conde in December 2010 but have been repeatedly delayed.

The west African nation's main opposition leader, Cellou Dalein Diallo, has accused the president's camp and the electoral commission of conniving to rig the September 24 vote.

Europe
Cruise Ship Costa Condordia Finally Righted
Straightened out, that is, after 20 months.
Engineers succeeded Tuesday in righting the Costa Concordia cruise liner off the Italian island of Giglio, where it had capsized when it ran aground in January 2012, killing dozens of people. The effort began at 9 a.m. Monday. By midnight, despite delays caused by thunderstorms and the need to tighten a slack cable, the ship had been hauled off the rocks and upward about 25 degrees. That was far enough for the salvage crew to start drawing water into massive steel boxes attached to the exposed side of the hull and then use the weight of that water to finish rolling the hulk onto a steel platform built off the sea floor.

There appeared to be no sign of leaks, a front man told reporters - a promising sign, as the wrecked liner is full of spoiled food and chemicals in material such as paint and lubricants. They include thousands of liters of lubricants, paints, insecticides, glue and paint thinners as well as 10 tanks of oxygen and 3,929 liters of carbon dioxide.
Not only that, but also -
Refrigerators filled with milk, cheese, eggs and vegetables have been closed tight since the disaster.
Not to mention -
Freezers that remain intact contain the rotting remnants of what were once 1,268 kilograms of chicken breasts, 8,200 kilograms of beef, 2,460 kilograms of cheese and 6,850 liters of ice cream.
Next up -
A robotic submarine equipped with surveillance cameras will survey the damaged side of the ship and create models needed in planning for the next phase of operations - the attachment of more buoyancy chambers called sponsons to the starboard side.

Once those are installed, water will be pumped out of the sponsons to refloat the vessel. Organizers expect the ship won't be towed away for dismantling until the summer of 2014.
Meanwhile -
Francesco Schettino, the captain who guided the ship off course, faces charges of manslaughter, causing a maritime disaster and abandoning ship with passengers still on board. His trial resumes September 23.

Are all Cruise ships top-heavy?
Posted by: Redneck Jim || 09/17/2013 13:18 Comments || Top||

#2  Many are, and not just cruise ships. Auto carriers and container ships are others.

For cruise ships, a lot of the superstructure construction is relatively lightweight, but it still has a heck of a lot of sail area. Usually that's compensated for by shifting the 'center of gravity' farther down into the hull. That means selective placement of ballast, ballast tanks, placing more of the ship's machinery and stores into the hull, etc. Oh, and stabilizers.

I just hope the hull is strong enough to handle the stresses from being towed.

Merkel rejects ailing coalition partners' bid for help
[Al Ahram] Chancellor Angela Merkel
...current chancellor of Germany. She was educated in East Germany when is was still run by commies, but in 1989 got involved with the growing democracy movement when the Berlin Wall fell. Merkel is sometimes referred to by Germans as Mom...
warned Germans she had no votes to spare as she launched a final week of campaigning Monday, after a disastrous Bavarian election performance by her junior partners.

Merkel told supporters of her Christian Democratic Union (CDU) in the northern town of Duderstadt that she needed both the votes granted to them under Germany's electoral system in a general election Sunday.

"We have no votes to give away," she said in remarks broadcast on public television, after her junior partners, the Free Democrats (FDP), pleaded for a helping hand.

"We will fight for every vote."

Germany's 62 million voters can make two checks on their ballots in the national election -- one for a candidate and one for a party -- allowing the option of splitting their support.

While Merkel's conservative allies triumphed in the wealthy southern state Sunday, their coalition partners in Bavaria and at the national level, the FDP, crashed out of the regional parliament.

Analysts said the result made a third term for Merkel look increasing likely in next Sunday's general election.

But it raised the prospect of a nail-biter finish to see whether she can continue her centre-right government or will have to form a "grand coalition" with the rival Social Democrats.

#1  Germans don't cotton to paltry service.
Posted by: Besoeker || 09/17/2013 8:13 Comments || Top||

#2  Merkel is most likely to continue, just the conditions remain unsure:

1) The Liberals achieve 5%, then the current coalition is most likely to continue.

2) The Liberals achieve less than 5%. Then they won't be in Parliament and Merkel needs to seek a "grand coalition" with the SPD (annoying, but most likely) or the Greens (rather unlikely). The SPD actually has the chance to form a coalition with the Greens and the Left (former East German commies). The Left would love it, but SPD and Greens have ruled out this option rather categorically, so it's not likely for now. The grand coaliton may not hold during the full 4 year term though, so let's see how many moths those promises will hold.

3) Wildcard: The eurosceptical AfD. They want to return to the Deutsche Mark, so they might pull over the 5% mark. In that case the current coalition betwen the CDU/CSU and the FDP may not have enough seats in Parliament, even if the FDP makes it there.

My current prediction:

Current coalition: 60% likely
Grand Coalition: 38% likely

In fact a member of 'The Left' was the first chairman of the European Communist Alliance.

The CPEG has given itself many names over the last decades. 'CPEG' is not one of them, CPEG is what they are. They are not 'former' genocidal leftists.

Peshawar has evolved into one of Pakistan's most ethnically and linguistically diverse cities, which means lots of gunfire.

#1  The punishment for this should always be to dip the acid thrower in a vat of the same stuff. Feet first. Slowly...

Pope Calls for 'Another Way' for Catholic Divorcees
[An Nahar] Pope Francis on Monday called for "another way" of treating divorcees who remarry -- a thorny issue since Catholics who wed a second time are currently not allowed to receive Holy Communion at mass.

Catholic faithful should "feel at home" in parishes and those who have remarried should be treated with "justice", the pope was quoted as saying by Romasette, the local newspaper for the diocese of Rome.

"Our duty is to find another way in justice," he said.

Francis was meeting with hundreds of Rome priests in the Basilica of St John Lateran and he reminded them that his predecessor Benedict XVI had already addressed the issue of Catholic divorcees.

#1  in other words, the liturgical status isn't going to change, so no communion, but they should still be integrated into the local parish life in some manner.
