#1 Gunf-free zone becomes a free fire killng zone in istaces like these. Thats one of the things I hated about working on post: my carry permit meant nothing, and I could not evenn bring the firearm onto base as a civilian contractor, not even locked in my trunk, per base regulations. So I was basically disarmed my entire trip to and from, in addition to being disarmed while I was there. Theory was those teenaged SP's (USAF base) manning the gate could prevent all weapons from entering, and would provide armed response to prevent any major problems. Yeah right. Fortunately I worked in a SCIF, and at this site we had real armed guards, sidearms and M4 inside the gate thru the perimeter triple fence and again at the entrance.

#2 President Barack Obama lamented yet another mass shooting in the U.S. that he said took the lives of American patriots. He promised to make sure "whoever carried out this cowardly act is held responsible."

Empty words, he was BLACK swallow that.

#4 Any evidence of SJS? (Sudden Jihad Syndrome) or do we simply have a "batman" killer case (re: Aurora, and the quote "Some people just want to see the world burn"). Apparently this guy was USN, 2007-11, made PO3. Not sure rate or nature of service and discharge.

It did take planning, and a bit of subterfuge to get past security. Not sure how the Navy runs things, but if its mainly civilians there, then things may have gotten lax so as to not inconvenience the DoD civvys. But you'd have to be pretty lax for a guy to smuggle in a long gun, as is alleged to b]have been used, unless he brought it in part by part (major components) and stashed it for assembly later, on the day of his planned attack.

#5 Also, there is no trusting press to actually report accurately when it comes to firearms, since they have no idea what they are talking about. "Long gun" could mean anything from a barrett to a mac-10 to them - and guaranteed whatever it is, it will be called an "assault rifle"..

Anyone heard the caliber? 9mm means carbine/camp gun is possible (and the smuggled in by major components becomes a very real possibility if he had repeated access). Real rifle round means a much more sturdy weapon (and an even bigger security breach).

#7 As we examine lessons learned, it would appear that in a purely gov't controlled environment, gov't regulations will NOT protect you from either the evil and mayhem of murdering lunatics or the gov't itself.

Unfortunately the fix will undoubtedly be new and more intrusive regulations. While only one aspect of the challenge, the recruitment and hiring of lunatics such as the Navy Yard shooter, or Fort Hood's Nidal Hasan, and even the despicable Snowden will continue.

"And so we are confronting yet another mass shooting - and today it happened on a gov't installation in our nation's capital"
- President Obama

From his lofty pulpit, he adds to the list of "yet anothers". He illustrates and reminds us that we have a problem, not that gov't has failed or he has a solution.

The fact that at the micro, the gov't cannot protect innocent men and women whose job is to protect us at the macro, quite telling indeed. Perhaps the goal is not actually protection at all, but rather the perception of protection, as provided at a premium of both freedom and treasure by the gov't.

#10 Protected Class shooter is reported to have been recently hired by the Navy Yard Civilian Personnel Office (CPO). Shooter was said to have been under treatment by the VA for mental disorders. Shooter was also said to have civilian arrests for weapons violations and US Navy disciplinary issues.

Appears no one in the US Navy system or VA elected to report any derogatory information [DEROG] to the Central Clearance Facility (CCF), which would have resulted in his security clearance being suspended or pulled.

USN Bureau of Personnel, VA, Washington Navy Yard CPO or Contracting Officer's Representative (COR)..... looking the other way? Protected Classes looking out for Protected Classes ?

Security Clearance is a condition of employment. In this case, a ticket to murder.

#11 Obama and Fienstien were calling for more gun control before the bodies were cool (never mind cold...).
And of course the media refuses to mention that this too was a gun-free zone.

#12 I thought yesterday's Law Enforcement news conference was interesting. The D.C. police chief, the District Park Police Chief, FBI spokesperson all appeared to share something more in common than their law enforcement backgrounds. In another setting, the gruff monotone of the FBI spokesperson would have been comical.

#14 Ay Pee now reports:

U.S. law enforcement officials are telling The Associated Press that the Navy contractor identified as the gunman in the mass shootings at the Washington Navy Yard had been suffering a host of serious mental issues, including paranoia and a sleep disorder. He also had been hearing voices in his head, the officials said.

In other words, Mr. Alexis is yet another whose schizophrenia became overwhelming and drove him to kill. Very lucky he was killed by the policeman who shot him.

#18 As in Ft Hood, there were many, many warnings about the shooter being a threat that was ignored by the regime. Even the most powerful military on earth is totally defenseless against deadly incompetence. Just as a sentry that was found sleeping during war time, ome one needs to hang.

#19 It's a sad commentary indeed that so many in society will blame everything and everyone except the obvious.

This man was apparently a chronic, paranoid schizophrenic. That's a medical diagnosis and of course we'll need to go back carefully through his behavior and medical records to confirm (if that can be done).

Schizophrenics are tough. They can hold it together for long stretches of time and may only decompensate occasionally. When they do they may not be homicidal or harmful. But when they are, look out.

We used to institutionalize schizophrenics as a matter of course. We were unwilling to take the risk that a very few of them would cause harm. Now it seems we've gone completely the other way -- we'll tolerate the harm that the few do, when they do, rather than deny any of them their civil rights.

Worse yet, when they commit harm we'll blame something like the weapon, or the mental health system, rather than them.

It's foolish. Schizophrenics need much more intense medical therapy. They need to be identified better, screened better, treated better, and have better surveillance. While most are harmless, there should be no qualms about institutionalizing the ones who are, and there should be a low threshold to do so (and a high bar to un-do).

Until we do that we'll continue to have the occasional school or workplace shooting. The liberals and the media (but I repeat myself) will continue to blame AR-15 shotguns.

Fools. And I don't mean the schizophrenics.
