Afghanistan
Taliban kidnap 10 soldiers in north Afghanistan
[Iran Press TV] Talibs have kidnapped at least 10 Afghan National Army soldiers along with a doctor in the country's northeastern province of Badakhshan.

Provincial governor front man Abdul Marouf Rasikh said on Monday that the individuals were kidnapped by Taliban members during a military operation in the rugged Warduj district three days earlier. Rasikh added that negotiations have been started to free the army soldiers and the doctor from the Taliban captivity.

Earlier this month, Taliban members killed as many as 17 Afghan soldiers in the Badakhshan province.
So hoping for success in the 'negotiations' may be premature...
The incident began when a supply convoy of Afghan soldiers was ambushed by the gun-hung tough guys on March 3, with one soldier killed and 22 others captured in the Warduj district.

Negotiations using tribal elders as go-betweens were carried out and six of the soldiers were released alive, but 16 more were executed by the Taliban.

The bodies of the slain army personnel were later turned over to Afghan authorities.

Twin Explosions Rock Presidential Palace in Kismayu
[Shabelle] Explosions believed to be made of remote controlled land mines today rocked Kismayu city which is located in the lower region of Juba. This explosions occurred at the presidential palace early Morning. During the incident the occupants of area affected were members and top officials of the Raskamboni brigade led by ( Ahmed Mohamed Islam ) Ahmed Madobe.

Witness who were at area informed Shabele that two large explosions were hard. They informed us that the explosions were land mines controlled by remotes and had caused damages.the explosions happened at a base owned by the brigade.

A witness who declined to be named told the Shabele that the first explosion occurred at the base before a large crowd gathered which then resulted in the second explosion. The second explosion went off just as members of the brigade gathered at the place and may have caused severe damages.

Members of the brigade dispersed the members of the public who formed a crowd at the scene and communication is said to be out of order.

We tried to reach the officials from both the Raskamboni brigade and the Military from the federal government but that was not possible as telephone communication has been shut off.

Security in the area has been beefed up by the Federal army and Amisom Army from Kenya. This happened as a delegate consisting of internal security minister, minister of defense, minister of justice, members of parliament , and workers from the prime minister. The delegation from consisting of the prime minister is expected tomorrow

Gunmen seize Darfur refugees from UN peacekeepers
[FRANCE24] Gunmen in Sudan's Darfur seized 31 displaced people travelling under peacekeeper escort to a refugee conference, the African Union
...a union consisting of 53 African states, most run by dictators of one flavor or another. The only all-African state not in the AU is Morocco. Established in 2002, the AU is the successor to the Organisation of African Unity (OAU), which was even less successful...
-UN mission to the region said on Monday.

The mass abduction highlights insecurity for 1.4 million Darfuris uprooted by the region's decade-old conflict, and whose future is under discussion at the two-day conference which began on Monday.

"A convoy of three commercial buses carrying 31 internally displaced persons (IDPs) and escorted by UNAMID peacekeepers was stopped by a large unidentified gang in military uniforms and seven jeep-mounted guns," UNAMID spokeswoman Aicha Elbasri said.

"Despite UNAMID opposition, the gang forced the IDPs to an unknown location," said Elbasri, condemning the action of the gunnies.

Five Arrests for Cairo Unrest after Morsi under Fire
[An Nahar] Egypt's prosecutor general on Monday ordered the arrest of five young opposition activists on charges of inciting violence, following festivities last week in Cairo, state news agency MENA reported.

The order came as a warning from President Mohamed Morsi that political figures could be sanctioned if found to have stirred up the unrest drew the ire of the opposition and newspapers.

MENA said the five -- Alaa Abdel Fattah, Ahmed Duma, Karim el-Shaer, Hazem Abdel Azim and Ahmed Eid -- also had their names added to a black list barring them from travel abroad.

On Sunday, Morsi warned:"If investigations prove that certain political figures are implicated, the necessary measures will be taken against them, whatever their status."

The warning followed violent festivities last Friday in Cairo between pro-opposition demonstrators and Islamists from Morsi's Moslem Brüderbund movement that left 160 people injured.

The two sides have traded blame for the violence, against the backdrop of high political tensions which divide Egypt two years after the revolution that ousted president Hosni Mubarak
...The former President-for-Life of Egypt, dumped by popular demand in early 2011...

"We can expect the worst. Morsi's threat signals the death of the state of law. They show that he is president only of the Moslem Brüderbund," charged Khaled Daud, front man of the National Salvation Front opposition coalition.

"President Morsi always swings into action when the Moslem Brüderbund is under pressure, but he does nothing when his supporters attack the opposition," according to Abdel Ghafar Shokr, an NSF leader.

Al-Watan newspaper spoke of "a threat to the opposition," while Al-Masry Al-Youm accused the president of preparing "exceptional measures" against the opposition and of trying to intimidate the media.

The Brotherhood's lawyer Abdelmoneim Abdel Maksud, meanwhile, said he has filed suits against 169 people, including known political figures, over last week's violence, without giving names.

On Monday, hundreds of Islamists, mostly Salafists

hardline Mohammedans, kept up a protest action in front of Media City, a complex of studios and private television stations on the outskirts of Cairo.

Several employees in Media City have said they were attacked or intimidated by the protesters, who accuse the private media of bias against Islamists and of having incited Friday's unrest.

Police, Lagos hand over 93 suspected terrorists to Immigration
[Guardian Ng] SECURITY operatives and the Lagos State government have handed over no fewer than 93 suspected Islamic fascisti to the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS), Lagos State Command, for prosecution.

The suspects were said to have been taken to the Immigration headquarters on Alagbon, Close, Ikoyi yesterday afternoon.

The Guardian reliably gathered that the suspects comprised Chadians, Malians and Nigeriens.

NIS Spokesman, Lagos State Command, Mr. Muyiwa Odunubi, who confirmed receiving the suspects from security agents, said they would be paraded tomorrow by the Command.

He said: "I can confirm to you that we received 93 suspected Boko Haram
... not to be confused with Procol Harum, Harum Scarum, possibly to be confused with Helter Skelter. The Nigerian version of al-Qaeda and the Taliban rolled together and flavored with a smigeon of distinctly Subsaharan ignorance and brutality...
members who were handed over to us by the Police and other security agencies."

There were indications last week that the Boko Haram sect might have infiltrated Lagos State following the raid of a building in Ijora Badia area of Lagos, suspected to have haboured the suspected terrorists.

Arrested in the Lagos building were two persons - a Chadian simply identified as Aminu and another man from the northern part of Nigeria, whose identity could not be ascertained.

At the raid carried out by a combined team of OP MESSA, an enhanced military patrol in Lagos, and personnel of the Department of State Security, AK 47 rifles and some explosives said to have been hidden inside the ceiling were retrieved.

The arrest of the two suspects perhaps triggered more raids by security operatives, which brought the number of jugged

suspects to the 93 now in Immigration custody.

Turkey embroiled in yet another illegal weapons shipment
[Yemen Post] The Ministry of Defense published a statement on Sunday in which it stipulates Amran local authorities (northern governorate) intercepted a shipment of illegal weapons all bearing the made-in Turkey seal concealed inside a bus.

According to preliminary reports the cargo, 1729 Turkish made guns, is believed to have reached Yemen through one of its seaports. An inquest has been open and officials at the Ministry of Defense said under cover of anonymity the matter is being closely monitored, especially since Yemen is currently holding its National Dialogue Conference in the capital, Sana'a.

The governorate of Amran lies directly north of the capital, raising some security worries.

Back in 2012, Turkey had to answer questions over its involvement in the smuggling of weapons to Yemen as several illegal cargoes were seized by the Yemeni authorities in the seaports of Aden and Hodeida, alleging a link to Ankara. At the time it was theorized Turkey was arming political factions to promote its regional agenda.

All allegations were later on proven ludicrous and Turkey was exonerated, as none of the forensic evidences added up.

At the time, Turkish Foreign Ministry front man Secuk Unal retaliated to negative comments toward Turkey's involvement in arm trafficking by saying "Turkey will continue to support the security and stability needed for Yemen's reconciliation process in various ways, and will firmly oppose any initiative that could negatively affect this process ... We certainly have not authorized such a shipment of weapons. It is not thinkable to OK such arms exports to countries where conflict risks are high and where it could result in more deaths."

It is important to note that in recent months Iran has been also accused of militarily enabling political factions in Yemen (al-Harak and the Houthis) to destabilize the region and work against Soddy Arabia
...a kingdom taking up the bulk of the Arabian peninsula. Its primary economic activity involves exporting oil and soaking Islamic rubes on the annual hajj pilgrimage. Robber killed in Chandpur 'shootout'
[Bangla Daily Star] An alleged robber was killed in a "shootout" between his cohorts and Rapid Action Battalion members in Kachua upazila of Chandpur early yesterday.
He will be missed. Actually, he wasn't missed, was he?
Deceased Golam Gaus alias Moni Gaus, 50, was a member of a robbery gang and accused in three robbery cases, said Alamgir Hossain, acting officer-in-charge of Kachua Police Station.
At 50 he was probably getting a little creaky for a life of crime...
Quoting the elite force members, police said a team of Rab-11 challenged the gang at Ghagra around 3:00am when they were preparing for a robbery.
"Arrr! It's 3am, men! Time to plan a robbery or two!"
Sensing danger, the robbers opened fire
"It's the Rab! Open fire, men!"
"But boss! We only got a revolver, one light gun, four cartridges, two rounds of bullet and four sharp weapons!"

forcing the Rab men to retaliate that triggered a shootout.
"You may fire when ready, Sergeant Shafique!"
[BANG! BANG! BANGETY BANG!]

Gaus came in the line of fire and was struck down in his prime, police said.
"Aaaiiee! I am undone!... [stagger]... [reel]... [flop]... Rosebud!"
The body was later handed over to Kachua police.
"Doctor Quincy! To the white courtesy phone!"
Rab recovered a revolver, one light gun, four cartridges, two bullets and four sharp weapons from the spot.
We knew that.

Arms Airlift to Syria Rebels Expands, With Aid From C.I.A.
More leaks to the NYT. This time at least it pulls away the mask over what our country has been doing to 'aid' the Syrian rebels, including the more vile jihadi types within that loose alliance.
With help from the C.I.A., Arab governments and Turkey have sharply increased their military aid to Syria's opposition fighters in recent months, expanding a secret airlift of arms and equipment for the uprising against President Bashar al-Assad, according to air traffic data, interviews with officials in several countries and the accounts of rebel commanders.

The airlift, which began on a small scale in early 2012 and continued intermittently through last fall, expanded into a steady and much heavier flow late last year, the data shows. It has grown to include more than 160 military cargo flights by Jordanian, Saudi and Qatari military-style cargo planes landing at Esenboga Airport near Ankara, and, to a lesser degree, at other Turkish and Jordanian airports.

As it evolved, the airlift correlated with shifts in the war within Syria, as rebels drove Syria's army from territory by the middle of last year. And even as the Obama administration has publicly refused to give more than "nonlethal" aid to the rebels, the involvement of the C.I.A. in the arms shipments -- albeit mostly in a consultative role, American officials say -- has shown that the United States is more willing to help its Arab allies support the lethal side of the civil war.
Either this is a good thing, in which case whoever leaked it should not have, or it isn't, in which case Champ is being his usual hypocritical self.
From offices at secret locations, American intelligence officers have helped the Arab governments shop for weapons, including a large procurement from Croatia, and have vetted rebel commanders and groups to determine who should receive the weapons as they arrive, according to American officials speaking on the condition of anonymity. The C.I.A. declined to comment on the shipments or its role in them.
And it shouldn't. Though Champ might be asked at his next presser, assuming he ever holds one...
The shipments also highlight the competition for Syria's future between Sunni Muslim states and Iran, the Shiite theocracy that remains Mr. Assad's main ally. Secretary of State John Kerry pressed Iraq on Sunday to do more to halt Iranian arms shipments through its airspace; he did so even as the most recent military cargo flight from Qatar for the rebels landed at Esenboga early Sunday night.
You'll notice the Iraqis didn't listen to Jahwn. They know a stuffed shirt when they see one...
Syrian opposition figures and some American lawmakers and officials have argued that Russian and Iranian arms shipments to support Mr. Assad's government have made arming the rebels more necessary.
That presumes you want the rebels to win, or at least that you want both sides to lose.
Most of the cargo flights have occurred since November, after the presidential election in the United States
...just a coincidence...
and as the Turkish and Arab governments grew more frustrated by the rebels' slow progress against Mr. Assad's well-equipped military. The flights also became more frequent as the humanitarian crisis inside Syria deepened in the winter and cascades of refugees crossed into neighboring countries.

The Turkish government has had oversight over much of the program, down to affixing transponders to trucks ferrying the military goods through Turkey so it might monitor shipments as they move by land into Syria, officials said. The scale of shipments was very large, according to officials familiar with the pipeline and to an arms-trafficking investigator who assembled data on the cargo planes involved.
So why didn't Turkey just run the whole thing? They have plenty of arms, and plenty of money.
"A conservative estimate of the payload of these flights would be 3,500 tons of military equipment," said Hugh Griffiths, of the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute, who monitors illicit arms transfers.

"The intensity and frequency of these flights," he added, are "suggestive of a well-planned and coordinated clandestine military logistics operation."

Although rebel commanders and the data indicate that Qatar and Saudi Arabia had been shipping military materials via Turkey to the opposition since early and late 2012, respectively, a major hurdle was removed late last fall after the Turkish government agreed to allow the pace of air shipments to accelerate, officials said.

Simultaneously, arms and equipment were being purchased by Saudi Arabia in Croatia and flown to Jordan on Jordanian cargo planes for rebels working in southern Syria and for retransfer to Turkey for rebels groups operating from there, several officials said.

These multiple logistics streams throughout the winter formed what one former American official who was briefed on the program called "a cataract of weaponry."

American officials, rebel commanders and a Turkish opposition politician have described the Arab roles as an open secret, but have also said the program is freighted with risk, including the possibility of drawing Turkey or Jordan actively into the war and of provoking military action by Iran.
I doubt seriously Iran is going to start a war with Turkey: the latter has a modern military, the former has a bunch of strutting commanders.
Still, rebel commanders have criticized the shipments as insufficient, saying the quantities of weapons they receive are too small and the types too light to fight Mr. Assad's military effectively. They also accused those distributing the weapons of being parsimonious or corrupt.
All of which may be true, but when you're a rebel it's best not to complain that your benefactors aren't helping as much as they could, or that your benefactors are skimming some of the cream for themselves. After all, they could stop being your benefactors...
"The outside countries give us weapons and bullets little by little," said Abdel Rahman Ayachi, a commander in Soquor al-Sham, an Islamist fighting group in northern Syria.

He made a gesture as if switching on and off a tap. "They open and they close the way to the bullets like water," he said.
That's usually the way it works, and it's done to remind you that you, Abdel, are the supplicant, and you'd best do as you're told. Get the message? Really? Then why are you talking with the NYT? We'd best turn the tap off a while...
Two other commanders, Hassan Aboud of Soquor al-Sham and Abu Ayman of Ahrar al-Sham, another Islamist group, said that whoever was vetting which groups receive the weapons was doing an inadequate job.

"There are fake Free Syrian Army brigades claiming to be revolutionaries, and when they get the weapons they sell them in trade," Mr. Aboud said.
That's never happened before in the history of humankind, I'm sure...
The former American official noted that the size of the shipments and the degree of distributions are voluminous.

"People hear the amounts flowing in, and it is huge," he said. "But they burn through a million rounds of ammo in two weeks."

A Tentative Start

The airlift to Syrian rebels began slowly. On Jan. 3, 2012, months after the crackdown by the Alawite-led government against antigovernment demonstrators had morphed into a military campaign, a pair of Qatar Emiri Air Force C-130 transport aircraft touched down in Istanbul, according to air traffic data.

They were a vanguard.

Weeks later, the Syrian Army besieged Homs, Syria's third largest city. Artillery and tanks pounded neighborhoods. Ground forces moved in.

Across the country, the army and loyalist militias were trying to stamp out the rebellion with force -- further infuriating Syria's Sunni Arab majority, which was severely outgunned. The rebels called for international help, and more weapons.

By late midspring the first stream of cargo flights from an Arab state began, according to air traffic data and information from plane spotters.

On a string of nights from April 26 through May 4, a Qatari Air Force C-17 -- a huge American-made cargo plane -- made six landings in Turkey, at Esenboga Airport. By Aug. 8 the Qataris had made 14 more cargo flights. All came from Al Udeid Air Base in Qatar, a hub for American military logistics in the Middle East.
Qatar sure does seem to have a nice military...
Qatar has denied providing any arms to the rebels. A Qatari official, who requested anonymity, said Qatar has shipped in only what he called nonlethal aid. He declined to answer further questions.
"I will say no more!"
It is not clear whether Qatar has purchased and supplied the arms alone or is also providing air transportation service for other donors. But American and other Western officials, and rebel commanders, have said Qatar has been an active arms supplier -- so much so that the United States became concerned about some of the Islamist groups that Qatar has armed.
And where the arms might have gone after the Islamist groups took custody...
The Qatari flights aligned with the tide-turning military campaign by rebel forces in the northern province of Idlib, as their campaign of ambushes, roadside bombs and attacks on isolated outposts began driving Mr. Assad's military and supporting militias from parts of the countryside.

As flights continued into the summer, the rebels also opened an offensive in that city -- a battle that soon bogged down.

The former American official said David H. Petraeus, the C.I.A. director until November, had been instrumental in helping to get this aviation network moving and had prodded various countries to work together on it. Mr. Petraeus did not return multiple e-mails asking for comment.
Did the NYT ask his girlfriend (okay, that's cold but still...)
The American government became involved, the former American official said, in part because there was a sense that other states would arm the rebels anyhow.
So Champ was trying to get out in front this time?
The C.I.A. role in facilitating the shipments, he said, gave the United States a degree of influence over the process, including trying to steer weapons away from Islamist groups and persuading donors to withhold portable antiaircraft missiles that might be used in future terrorist attacks on civilian aircraft.
A 'degree of influence'? You'd think we'd get more than that, but such is how low we've fallen in that part of the world.
American officials have confirmed that senior White House officials were regularly briefed on the shipments. "These countries were going to do it one way or another," the former official said. "They weren't asking for a 'Mother, may I?' from us. But if we could help them in certain ways, they'd appreciate that."

Through the fall, the Qatari Air Force cargo fleet became even more busy, running flights almost every other day in October. But the rebels were clamoring for even more weapons, continuing to assert that they lacked the firepower to fight a military armed with tanks, artillery, multiple rocket launchers and aircraft.

Many were also complaining, saying they were hearing from arms donors that the Obama administration was limiting their supplies and blocking the distribution of the antiaircraft and anti-armor weapons they most sought. These complaints continue.

"Arming or not arming, lethal or nonlethal -- it all depends on what America says," said Mohammed Abu Ahmed, who leads a band of anti-Assad fighters in Idlib Province.
Perhaps we're not quite convinced of your democratic bone fides, Mohammed, or what you'll do with anti-aircraft weapons after the war is over...

The Breakout

Soon, other players joined the airlift: In November, three Royal Jordanian Air Force C-130s landed in Esenboga, in a hint at what would become a stepped-up Jordanian and Saudi role.

Within three weeks, two other Jordanian cargo planes began making a round-trip run between Amman, the capital of Jordan, and Zagreb, the capital of Croatia, where, officials from several countries said, the aircraft were picking up a large Saudi purchase of infantry arms from a Croatian-controlled stockpile.
How does a Jordanian military airplane fly to Croatia without a) overflying Israel or b) overflying Syria or c) overflying Iraq?
The first flight returned to Amman on Dec. 15, according to intercepts of a transponder from one of the aircraft recorded by a plane spotter in Cyprus and air traffic control data from an aviation official in the region.
Plane spotters again. They're the ones who busted the CIA in the early 2000's. Wonder if we still use the same tail numbers as before?
In all, records show that two Jordanian Ilyushins bearing the logo of the Jordanian International Air Cargo firm but flying under Jordanian military call signs made a combined 36 round-trip flights between Amman and Croatia from December through February. The same two planes made five flights between Amman and Turkey this January.

As the Jordanian flights were under way, the Qatari flights continued and the Royal Saudi Air Force began a busy schedule, too -- making at least 30 C-130 flights into Esenboga from mid-February to early March this year, according to flight data provided by a regional air traffic control official.

Several of the Saudi flights were spotted coming and going at Ankara by civilians, who alerted opposition politicians in Turkey.

"The use of Turkish airspace at such a critical time, with the conflict in Syria across our borders, and by foreign planes from countries that are known to be central to the conflict, defines Turkey as a party in the conflict," said Attilla Kart, a member of the Turkish Parliament from the C.H.P. opposition party, who confirmed details about several Saudi shipments. "The government has the responsibility to respond to these claims."
I'll just bet Erdogan doesn't see it that way, and you'd best watch yourself Attilla...
Turkish and Saudi Arabian officials declined to discuss the flights or any arms transfers. The Turkish government has not officially approved military aid to Syrian rebels.
"No, no, certainly not!"
Croatia and Jordan both denied any role in moving arms to the Syrian rebels. Jordanian aviation officials went so far as to insist that no cargo flights occurred.
"Wudn't us."
The director of cargo for Jordanian International Air Cargo, Muhammad Jubour, insisted on March 7 that his firm had no knowledge of any flights to or from Croatia.

"This is all lies," he said. "We never did any such thing."

A regional air traffic official who has been researching the flights confirmed the flight data, and offered an explanation. "Jordanian International Air Cargo," the official said, "is a front company for Jordan's air force."

After being informed of the air-traffic control and transponder data that showed the plane's routes, Mr. Jubour, from the cargo company, claimed that his firm did not own any Ilyushin cargo planes.

Asked why his employer's Web site still displayed images of two Ilyushin-76MFs and text claiming they were part of the company fleet, Mr. Jubour had no immediate reply. That night the company's Web site was taken down.

#1  "People hear the amounts flowing in, and it is huge... But they burn through a million rounds of ammo in two weeks."

Lack of fire discipline, methinks.

The question is: what happens if and when the rebels take over. The weapons will still be around...

#6  Might be ironic if the next Arab Spring hotspot was Qatar.

#7  EU, I hope that the next hotspot is in Abu Dhabi, Qatar or Dubai and takes out the site of the European PGA.

There's something humorous in a bunch of European golfers finding out what really happens in their oh so pristine paradise.

#8  Why EU, that's ... that's ... diabolical.

I love it.

Problem is, if Qatar goes under it's pro'lly to Iran, and we don't need the Mad Mullahs™ on the west side of the Gulf.

Though it is a good seed location for the Republic of Eastern Arabia that we at the Burg talked about a good decade ago...

#10  "But they burn through a million rounds of ammo in two weeks."
So that's why there is a shortage of ammo in the U.S army
Nice to see that the Muslim Brotherhood which controls the critical sections of the U.S. government are looking after their Al Qaeda affiliated Muslim "brothers"

#11  I don't care about the European golfers but I wouldn't want anything bad to happen to Phil Mickelson. But, seriously, Qatar is playing a dangerous game best left to professionals like Hillary Clinton and John Kerry.

Syria Rebels Seal Jordan Border Posts
[An Nahar] Rebels fighting to oust Syrian Hereditary President-for-Life Bashir Pencilneck al-Assad
Lord of the Baath...
's regime on Monday sealed off the country's only two border posts with Jordan, a military official said.

"The Free Syrian Army closed the two crossings of Daraa and Naseeb from their side after they took control of them," the Jordanian official told Agence La Belle France Presse on condition of anonymity.

He declined to elaborate.

"Jordan is monitoring the Syrian crisis and any decision will be taken in line with our national interest," Information Minister Samih Maaytah told state-run Petra news agency.

"Jordan did not take any decision to close the border. There is nothing new on the Jordanian side of the borders," said Maaytah, who is also government front man.

The development comes after the rebels seized a 25-kilometer (15-mile) strip of land stretching from the Jordanian border to the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.

Car bomb kills unspecified number of people in Damascus

The bomb, which had been affixed under a car, went off in the district of al-Halbouni in central Damascus late on Monday, Xinhua reported.

The people who were in the car were all killed in the explosion.

Earlier in the day, at least two people were killed and several others injured after foreign-backed militants fighting against the government targeted Umayyad Square in Damascus.
