Afghanistan
Roadside bomb kills 11 in Badghis
KABUL: The Afghan Interior Ministry says a roadside bombing in the countryÂ’s west has killed 11 people, most of them members of one family.

A ministry statement on Tuesday says the bomb went off as a police vehicle was driving by Monday evening in Badghis provinceÂ’s Qadis district. The vehicle was part of a three-vehicle police convoy that had stopped shortly before to pick up a family that needed a ride into town.

The ministry says nine of the 11 killed were from one family, including six children and two women. Two policemen were also killed while three people — a 10-year-old child and two other policemen — were wounded.

The ministry condemned what it described as an “un-Islamic” act that killed the civilians during the second day of a major Islamic holiday.

Allies hunt Shabaab fighters door-to-door
[Daily Nation (Kenya)] A door-to-door operation has been launched to flush out Al-Shabaab
... Harakat ash-Shabaab al-Mujahidin aka the Mujahideen Youth Movement. It was originally the youth movement of the Islamic Courts, now pretty much all of what's left of it. They are aligned with al-Qaeda but operate more like the Afghan or Pakistani Taliban. The organization's current leader is Ibrahim Haji Jama Mee'aad, also known as Ibrahim al-Afghani. Fazul Abdullah Mohammed, a Kenyan al-Qaeda member, is considered the group's military leader...
remnants in towns and centres captured by the Kenyan Defence Forces and their Somali Transitional Federal Government allies.

Kenya military front man Major Emmanuel Chirchir said that the allied troops were conducting patrols and searching houses in several towns.

"The focus is to ensure that these towns and villages are free of Al-Shabaab," Maj Chirchir told the Nation. (READ: Al-Shabaab on the run in south zone)

Looking for weapons

The door-to-door search started on Tuesday and will cover towns such as Ras Kamboni, Mnarani, Burgavo, Tabda, Beles Qooqani, Dhobley, Busar and Jilib, which are now under the control of the Kenyan troops and the Somali army.

"The exercise is being run simultaneously in the Northern, Central and Southern sectors to ensure that no Al-Shabaab cut-throats are hiding in the towns under our control.

"We are also looking for any weapons that could be hidden in the towns and villages as well as trying to obtain information from locals on the possible hideouts for the Al-Shabaab," Major Chirchir said.

The Kenya Navy, meanwhile, announced that its operations on the Indian Ocean had so far eliminated piracy incidents around the Somalia coast close to Kenya.

Nation Media Group has news teams embedded with the Kenyan military at sea and on land though this report contains material gathered in Nairobi.

Besides flushing out the cut-throats and impounding hidden weapons, the Kenyan troops want to open up the towns for international humanitarian organizations to deliver supplies, Maj Chirchir said in Nairobi.

"Today, the KDF forces at the battlefront were involved in patrols and pacification in the liberated areas and Al-Shabaab pockets," said Major Chirchir.

"This pacification patrols reinforce the operation objectives and facilitate access by international aid organizations in the liberated areas," he added.

The Kenyan troops are on the third week of Operation Linda Nchi in Somalia aimed against the thug militia blamed for insecurity across the Horn of Africa.

The ultimate plan is to capture the two Al-Shabaab strongholds of Afmadow and Kismayu and allow TFG to take control.

It was not immediately clear whether the troops had captured any Al-Shabaab fighters in the door-to-door operation. Maj Chirchir however said the exercise would be extended to surrounding villages.

The Kenya Navy has in the meantime been conducting patrols in the Indian Ocean to keep out the cut-throats and have so far sunk two enemy boats, killing over ten members of the Al-Shabaab in the process, according to the military. (READ: Kenya Navy sinks boat believed to be carrying rebels)

However,
death is not the end. There remains the litigation over the estate...
there have been protests that one of the boats reported sunk was actually crewed by local fishermen.

In southern Somalia, the leader of the Ras Kamboni Brigade, fighting alongside TFG forces and the Kenyan military, said the areas freed from Al-Shaabab control urgently require food aid and medicine.

Mr Ahmed Mohammed Islan told the Nation the conditions are now safe for international aid agencies.

Mr Islan, also known Madoobe, said the entry of the Kenya Defence Forces on the scene led to the routing of the Al Shaabab, which had taken over the strategic town by the sea.

"The people welcomed us here but help is needed. The aid agencies kept away because of the Al Shaabab but it is now safe for them to come back," said Mr Islan.

He said the residents of Ras Kamboni, whose mainstay is deep sea fishing, have for long been deprived of the means through which they earned a living.

The fishermen at Ras Kamboni said they had to pay a protection fee to the militia group in the form of cash from their sales or give up a portion of the catch.

They have now been banned from fishing at night or crossing the border into Kenya, where they supplied restaurants and resorts on the islands at the coast. Kenyan authorities said their boats were at times used to smuggle weapons and ammunition.

It is also suspected that the easy access they had to the Kenyan coast and the islands along it made it easy for the suspected Al-Shaabab militia to kidnap Judith Tebbut and Marie Dedeu in September and October respectively.

The free movement in the sea also made it easy for pirates to launch attacks on merchant ships off the long Somalia coastline, often straying into Kenya's territorial waters.

Niger's army 'blocks Libya to Mali' convoy
Niger's army has clashed with a heavily armed convoy travelling from Libya towards Mali, security sources say.

Defence Minister Mahamadou Karidio said that one soldier was killed in the festivities on Sunday while several attackers were captured. Mr Karidio did not clarify whether or not the convoy was made up of fighters of the ousted Libyan regime or al-Qaeda linked turbans.

Both groups have travelled through the increasingly unstable border area.

The remote desert region is also affected by a rebellion involving ethnic Tuaregs, some of whom fought on the side of killed Libyan leader Col Muammar Qadaffy
... one of those little rainstorms from the Arab Spring...
during the conflict in Libya.

Serge Hilpron, the head of Radio Nomad, a broadcaster in northern Niger, told the AP news agency that his sources indicated that both Libyan nationals and Tuaregs were in the convoy.

Rocket-propelled grenades
"Because of the Libyan problem, there are now traffickers heading to Libya to pick up the arms left behind and to bring them here. These same traffickers then sell the arms to AQIM [al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb]," he is quoted as saying.

Mr Karidio said the military captured some of the fighters during the festivities in the Arlit area. One soldier was killed and four maimed in the fighting, he said.

Security sources told La Belle France's RFI radio that six four-by-four vehicles, with a large quantity arms from Libya, were destroyed. Mr Karidio said a huge arms cache was seized, including rocket-propelled grenades and assault rifles, but he did not specify where they came from.

Security experts believe AQIM - which attacks and kidnaps foreigners across the region - is acquiring weapons from Libya, which they describe as an "arms bazaar".

Tunis Court Gives Nod to Extradition of Libyan Ex-PM
[An Nahar] A Tunis appeals court on Tuesday approved a request by the new Libyan authorities for the extradition of their former prime minister Baghdadi al-Mahmudi, the court's clerk said.

The court "approved the extradition request" made by the new Libyan authorities for the extradition of Mahmudi, despite concerns expressed by rights groups and Mahmudi himself over his safety.

During the hearing, dozens of Libyans rallied outside the courthouse demanding the extradition of the man they called the "third tyrant of Libya" after fallen strongman Moammar Qadaffy
...a proud Arab institution for 42 years...
and his son Seif al-Islam.

"The Libyan people have the right to apply the law to those who robbed the people," one banner read.

Defense lawyer Mabrouk Kourchid argued at the hearing that his team had not had time to review documents newly added to the case because of the Mohammedan festival of Eid al-Adha that ended Monday.

However a Tunisian judge refused to postpone the extradition hearing, with Mahmudi's team complaining that he had given no explanation for his decision.

"We are very disappointed by the judge's stance, which presages nothing good about his intentions," Kourchid said.

Last week he said that his client fears for his life as the sole holder of Libyan state secrets since Qadaffy's death on October 20.

Mahmudi, 70, was prime minister until the final days of the Qadaffy regime. He was incarcerated on September 21 on Tunisia's southwestern border with Algeria.

He was immediately sentenced to six months in jail for illegal entry into Algeria, a decision that was overturned on appeal.

Mahmudi has however been held since at a prison near Tunis awaiting a ruling on the extradition request.

Tunisia in August recognized Libya's National Transitional Council as the country's new authority and has committed itself to cooperation on security issues.

Amnesia Amnesty International last week urged Tunisia not to extradite Mahmudi, saying he risked being subject to "serious human rights
...which are usually entirely different from personal liberty...
violations."

The London-based rights group warned that "if he would be returned to Libya, he would at present face real risks, serious human rights violations, including torture ... extra-judicial execution and unfair trial," the group's north Africa front man told AFP.

Kourchid said Mahmudi "does not oppose a fair verdict for the whole period during which he was prime minister. But Mr Mahmudi thinks the time is not right, because the current period of chaos prevailing in Libya is dominated by vengeance."

Sana'a: Rayan Hills are Turned Into a Defense Military Base
[Yemen Post] Amidst news that President-for-Life Saleh
... exemplifying the Arab's propensity to combine brutality with incompetence...
will sign on Thursday the power-transfer deal brokered by the Gulf Coalition Council which will in essence announce the end of his presidency and hold over Yemen, sources within the military are revealing interesting plans.

Several high ranking officers and sources within Sana'a governor's office revealed that President President-for-Life Ali Abdullah Saleh
... Saleh initially took power as a strongman of North Yemen in 1977, when disco was in flower, but he didn't invite Donna Summer to the inauguration and Blondie couldn't make it...
was transferring an impressive range of weapons defense system onto Rayan Hills, which was once destined to be a Qatari real estate venture in the capital.

Directly overlooking Hadda, a southern district of Sana'a, home to many officials, diplomats and presidential family members, and most importantly the presidential palace itself; the Hills present an undisputed strategic position.

For several weeks now, the stream of military convoys has been arriving at the site, and soldiers were seen unloading heavy weapons and other military equipment. Builders were ordered to level the grounds for anti-aircraft guns and state of the art surveillance system to be installed.

Furthermore, the Defense Ministry has been actively recruiting young men into the army, wanting to biff up its troops in what many believe could be a preparation for an armed conflict similar to that of 1994 when Saleh attacked South Yemen despite the issuance of not one but two UN Security Council resolution.

Fierce fighting in Zinjibar
[Yemen Post] For the third consecutive day in Zinjibar, Monday was the scene of fierce fighting opposing the government forces and alleged al-Qaeda thugs.

Military sources revealed under cover of anonymity to the press that at least 6 Islamist fighters had been killed on Monday alone, bringing the death-toll to 11 since Saturday.

Despite claims from the Yemeni Defense ministry that the army was making progress in quelling the al-Qaeda insurgency in the southern province of Abyan, the terror group has yet to be driven out of Zinjibar, the regional capital of the province and other major cities such as Jaar.

Months of fighting has forced the local population to find refuge in nearby provinces, essentially the port-city of Aden where they took shelter in schools, abandoned warehouses and make-shift camps.

Although no government soldiers were reported dead on Monday, the military sources admitted that several had been injured, without however giving a clear number.

Opposition Meets with Saudi King and Crown Prince
[Yemen Post] In its latest blurb, the Supreme Coordination Council of the Yemeni Revolution (SCCYR) announced that the members of the Opposition had been invited to visit the Kingdom of Soddy Arabia by none other than Crown Prince Nayef bin Abdulaziz.

Since this invitation comes amidst a "world tour" lobbying for support on the part of the members of the JMP, the move is seen by many as further proof that the Kingdom is operating a political shift in favor of the toppling of President-for-Life Saleh
... exemplifying the Arab's propensity to combine brutality with incompetence...

Although the Saudi have been quite clearly supporting President Saleh so far, political analysts, amongst whom Marwan Bushara from Al-Jazeera have pointed out that the autocrat was becoming somewhat of a liability for his powerful neighbor.

Since the 2014 UN Security Council resolution was passed unanimously, Saleh's former allies have declared their support of the revolutionary movement, abandoning the ailing dictator to a fate everyone seems to believe is close at hands.

The Yemeni delegation composed of Mohamed Salem Basandwah, the head of National Council of revolution forces, Dr. Yassen Saeed Noman, the Chairman of the Joint Meeting Parties bloc, and Abdul Wahab Al-Ansi the Secretary-General of the Islah party, is believed to have meetings lined up with the newly appointed Crown Prince and King Abdullah bin Abdelaziz himself.

The royal visit will close the Opposition tour of the Arab World after they met with Emirs of Kuwait as well as with Omani and Emirati officials over the past few days.

Furthermore, Abdulateef al-Zayani, the Secretary General of the GCC recently suggested that both parties, the regime and the Opposition meet up in Riyadh to conclude the much awaited power-transfer deal, bringing an end to a 10 month long popular uprising.

Updates of the Yemeni Revolution for Nov 8
[Yemen Post] Taiz:

For the 4th consecutive day the town was heavily shelled all through night given its residents a respite only in the early hours of the morning. And even then residents reported some sporadic gun fighting across several districts as they said the People Protectors (Taiz independent army) was battling out the government forces.

According to residents inside Taiz, snipers loyal to the revolution are scattered throughout the town, shooting to kill at any person wearing an official uniforms: Republican Guards, Central Security Forces and so on...

Taiz army is mainly formed of former soldiers, dissidents of the regime, police officers and young recruit who said to be willing to defend their Freedom actively.

Despite the clashes of arms demonstrators are still willing to march through the town to denounce they say the regime multitude of crimes against its peaceful population.

Many said that although they supported the moved made by the PPs they still very much believed that peaceful was louder than the sounds of weapons and more in keeping with the will of the Yemeni.

"We want to show the World that we are peaceful...in the same time we have to defend our families and our homes from the aggressors [the regime forces]," said a man from Taiz under cover of anonymity.

No casualties so far.

Sana'a:

A protesters who was kidnapped on September 21st was found delirious in Sana'a .

The man now suffers amnesia and according to medical report suffered severe injuries. They added that they strongly believed the man was tortured and suffered traumas of such consequence that he is now mentally impaired.

"Amnesia is often the mind defense mechanism. A way to cope away from the pain, way from the unbearable," Said a doctor.

As acts of violence increase in the capital, residents are talking of organizing Neighborhood Watch groups. Only yesterday a man's car was taken at gunpoint as he was shopping at a supermarket in Hadda (south district of the capital).

Despite a somewhat respite in the capital, residents and protesters are worry that the recent "victories" of the Opposition (a delegation is expected to meet with the Saudi King and Crown Prince) will push Saleh over the edge and signal war.

Others in "The Square" are said to "be ready for every eventuality, claiming that "it doesn't matter either way since God is on their sides."

Defected General Mohsen has become a bit of a hero in "Change Square" since his Eid confessions of sort as he now symbolizes for many the death of the old ways and the rebirth of nationalism.

Several protesters actually said to want to join the defected army to protect their fellow demonstrators in a move similar to that of the people of Taiz.

More banners are now calling for Saleh to be taken to the ICC and his assets frozen.

No demonstration scheduled today as people continue to celebrate Eid with their families.

Ibb:

Despite being revolutionary and very much for the toppling of the regime many protesters do not agree with al-Islahization of the revolution as they view negatively the presence of too many members of al-Islah on the Opposition.

"We want to remain independent. Yemen needs not to be freed from one dictator to fall in the hands of another group. We need politic pluralism and a real democratic system," said a protester.

Yemen: Europe Discusses Freezing of Assets
[Yemen Post] Alain Juppe, the French Foreign minister who is currently receiving Nobel Peace Prize winner, Tawakkul Karman, has announced that the European Union
...the successor to the Holy Roman Empire, only without the Hapsburgs and the nifty uniforms and the dancing...
is set to discuss the possibility of freezing President President-for-Life Ali Abdullah Saleh
... Saleh initially took power as a strongman of North Yemen in 1977, when disco was in flower, but he didn't invite Donna Summer to the inauguration and Blondie couldn't make it...
's assets as well as that of his entourage in a new effort to push him to resign.

"I think asset freezes will be discussed as soon as possible," said Mr Juppe, adding that the matter was already on the Brussel's meeting's agenda next week as the EU is said to be determined to resolve the Yemeni crisis.

The news was received warmly by Karman, as the young activist who has been traveling the globe has been lobbying hard for the international community to step up their involvement in Yemen, calling for sanctions against the 69 year-old autocrat.

Karman has on many occasions declared that she would like to see Saleh's fortune seized and his person taken to the International Criminal Court
... where Milosevich died of old age before being convicted ...
what crimes against humanity. The activist has accused Saelh of "letting blood flow daily" in Yemen in a bid to retain his position.

"We need more actions. We want you to freeze the assets of Saleh and his people and see that action is taken at the International Criminal Court as he is a war criminal."

Since the adoption of the 2014 UN Security Council Resolution, president Saleh has been under increased pressure to agree to a power-transfer enounced by the GCC brokered proposal .

"I am ready to discuss with my European colleagues how to ensure the resolution is implemented, but our action would be more efficient if the (Yemen) opposition was more united," said Alain Juppe. He further added that the eventuality of an inquiry into alleged war crimes was on the table since there were not subject to immunity from prosecution according to the international law.

The Daily Slog: IAF strikes terror target in Gaza following rocket attack
The Israel Air Force struck a center of terrorist operations in the southern Gazoo Strip overnight Tuesday, the IDF Spokesman's Office said in a statement.

IAF aircraft recorded a direct hit of the intended target, which was struck in response to an earlier rocket attack on southern Israel. A Kassam rocket went kaboom! Tuesday evening in Sha'ar Hanegev Regional Council. No injuries or damages were reported in the attack.
Ma'an adds:
Israeli warplanes raided the southern Gazoo Strip early Wednesday injuring one man and damaging greenhouses.

Israeli forces fired two missiles north of Khan Younis which hit greenhouses and cut power to large areas of the city. One man suffered injuries caused by shrapnel from the missiles, a Ma'an news hound said.

An Israeli military front man said the raid was in response to a rocket fired at southern Israel late Tuesday. "The air force targeted a site used for terrorist activities in the south of the Gazoo Strip which was hit," he said in a statement.

On Monday, Israeli forces shelled the eastern Shujaiyeh district of Gazoo City. Medics said three people were maimed.

Low-level unrest has rumbled on in and around Gazoo for the past 10 days but has not deteriorated into all-out fighting as it did on October 29-30 when violence left 12 Paleostinian Islamic fascisti and an Israeli civilian dead.

Militant groups say they are observing an Egyptian-brokered truce agreement but have reserved the right to reply to any Israeli fire,
"And we won't wait for them to fire first before we reply. So there!"
while Israel has said it will target any forces of Evil poised to fire rockets across the border.

said its crackdown on dissent has left more than 3,500 people dead.

In a letter, the Syrian National Council urged the pan-Arab bloc "to take a strong and effective position against the Syrian regime commensurate with the dangerous development of the situation in Syria."

It wants the League to freeze Syria's membership, impose economic and diplomatic sanctions, and seek the referral of allegations of genocide and other human rights

The council, which groups the main opposition currents, focused its appeal on the central city of Homs, after declaring it a "humanitarian disaster area" in need of "international protection of civilians."

Homs is the only major city to remain outside the Assad regime's control after military operations in Hama further north, Deir al-Zour in the east and the coastal cities of Latakia and Banias.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said 12 non-combatants were killed across the country on Tuesday, among them a girl who died in Homs as soldiers pressed a crackdown on dissent.

"A civilian was killed during raids in the neighborhood of Baba Amro," where soldiers were searching for people wanted by the regime's security services, the Britannia-based rights group said in a statement.

Ravina Shamdasani, spokeswoman for the U.N. High Commissioner for Human Rights, described the situation in the besieged neighborhood as "appalling," with residents deprived of food, water and medical supplies for a week.

In another neighborhood of Homs, "a girl was killed by the kaboom of a rocket that hit her home," the Observatory said.

And in Qusair, near Homs, overnight festivities pitted soldiers against gunnies presumed to be defectors.

"Eight gunnies and security agents were killed in an ambush by gunnies, probably army defectors," south of Maaret al-Naaman, a town in Idlib province near the border with Turkey, it added.

Also in Idlib province, security forces rubbed out a young man and another man was killed by gunfire coming from a checkpoint in the region's eponymous capital, the rights group said.

The Arab League has called an emergency meeting in Cairo on Saturday over Syria's failure to implement its roadmap for ending the bloodshed, which calls on Assad to open talks with the opposition and withdraw tanks from the streets.

"The brutal crackdown on the dissent in Syria has so far claimed the lives of more than 3,500 Syrians," said Shamdasani.

"More than 60 people are reported to have been killed by military and security forces since Syria signed the peace plan sponsored by the league of Arab states, including at least 19 on Eid al-Adha on Sunday," she added.

Assad's government signed on to the vaporous Arab League peace plan on November 2.

The Arab roadmap calls for an end to violence, the release of those jugged, the withdrawal of the army from urban areas and free movement for observers and the media, as well as talks between the regime and opposition.

As a first step, Syria on Saturday said it had released more than 550 people who were placed in long-term storage during anti-regime protests, to mark the Eid al-Adha Moslem feast.

However,

Shamdasani noted that despite the release, "tens of thousands continue to remain in detention and dozens continue to be arbitrarily placed in long-term storage every day."

"Syrian troops continue to use tanks and heavy weaponry to attack residential areas in the city of Homs," where protests against Assad's rule continue despite the crackdown, she said.

"There was a peace plan by the league of Arab states that the Syrian government had engaged to, but since the peace plan was signed, there have been further killings, further sieges of towns and really shocking reports coming out from the ground," she noted.

The U.N. human rights office also pressed Assad's regime to grant its Sherlocks access on the ground.
