Briefs well, but unfortunately we will never win a war of attrition. Too damn many of the buggers. Key terrain and 'Lines of Communication' (LOC) must be taken and HELD by someone who isn't afraid to fight to keep them. Otherwise, when you leave the bad guys just migrate back in and the entire process begins anew.

A goodly number, given that the country a) is almost totally decentralized, and b) has over 70 million people, and c) has attracted huge numbers of jihadis from around the world.
If even 1% of the Afghan population are talibani, then you have a decentralized organization of ca 70,000. A span of control of 1:14 for each taliban leader would equate to 5,000 leaders-- and this doesn't include the foreign taliban elements.

[Al Arabiya] Bahrain has decided to reassert state control over the kingdom's mosques after charging Shiite opposition activists with plotting to overthrow the Sunni government, official media reported on Monday.
"Regaining control of the pulpits so they are not hostage to incompetent politicians or clerics who have lost their way... is the starting point for developing a sound religious orientation," Crown Prince Salman said in comments carried by the official BNA news agency.
Prime Minister Sheikh Khalifa bin Salman al-Khalifa said the government would ensure that places of worship are run by those who promote "the values of tolerance and moderation," BNA said.
The two officials' comments came in messages addressed to King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa on Sunday, a day after prosecutors pressed terrorism charges against the Shiite activists, raising tension in the run-up to an Oct. 23 general election.
According to a charge sheet released on Saturday, the 23 activists -- 10 of them prominent opposition figures -- stand accused of "undermining national security." Two of them, who live in London, are being tried in absentia.
Most of the suspects are members of Haq -- the Movement of Liberties and Democracy -- a Shiite group which rejected as inadequate reforms intended to put an end to Shiite-led unrest that rocked the 35-island archipelago through the 1990s.
Those reforms, enshrined in a 2002 charter, converted the emirate into a constitutional monarchy but Haq boycotted parliamentary elections in 2006 and intends to do the same next month.
The arrests have raised tensions between the government and the mainstream Shiite opposition which took part in the 2006 election, winning 17 of the 40 seats in parliament.
Sheikh Ali Salman, leader of the Islamic National Accord Association, warned last month that they would "lead to more protests."
He mocked the authorities' accusations against those arrested saying they could not have all belonged to a single secret organization as they had different opinions.

Mexican journalism, especially in Chihuahua is vigorous and diligent, and the press in Juarez does a magnificent job considering they are in the middle of a shooting gallery.
You can check it if you want. If La Polaka doesn't have it, El Diario will, and if El Diario and La Polaka doesn't have it, Tiempo will. There are two other dailies in Juarez I can check for crime news including El Mexicano, but I have learned over time, it is unnecessary. Most of these three have the news, sometimes redacted in favor of print production, sometimes with photos we can't use, but they almost always mutually support each other in the news they publish.
That this kind of news doesn't appear in the US is certainly not the fault of Mexican journalism. If Mexican's journalistic brothers in the Estados Unidos chose to ignore the slaughter, that is certainly their right.
[Pak Daily Times] A bomb exploded in a nightclub in Tajikistan's capital Dushanbe overnight, wounding seven people, security sources in the Central Asian republic said on Monday.
Two high-ranking sources within the security services said they had jugged two radical Islamists in connection with the kaboom, which followed an attack on Friday by suicide car bombers on a cop shoppe in another part of the country.
The National Committee for State Security, Tajikistan's successor to the Soviet-era KGB, said in a statement the kaboom was an act of hooliganism involving pyrotechnics, and was not a terrorist act. Nobody was killed in the blast. Central Asian governments are clamping down on what they see as religious extremism in the predominantly Mohammedan but secular former Soviet region. Police detained two men shortly after the kaboom, which occurred at midnight local time (1900 GMT) in the Dusti nightclub in a suburb of Dushanbe, frequented mainly by locals.
"An explosive device was detonated in the nightclub with the aim of spreading fear. Young, religious people were responsible, two of whom have been detained," a source within Tajikistan's security services said, speaking on condition of anonymity. A second source also said young Islamists were to blame.
"The device was placed beneath a table in the nightclub. But the kaboom was small and did not have serious consequences in terms of human victims," the second source said. Authorities in Tajikistan, which shares a porous 1,340-km border with Afghanistan, are worried about what they see as the threat of growing radicalism following a rise in clashes between security forces and armed gangs.
Tajik authorities frequently arrest and jail members of Mohammedan movements not endorsed by the government, describing them as Islamic fascistiintent on overthrowing the government. More than 100 members of banned organisations have been jailed this year. In Friday's attack, suicide car bombers killed two police officers and maimed 25 at a cop shoppe in Tajikistan's second-largest Khujand city.
Preident Imomali Rakhmon has led Tajikistan since 1992 and spent the first five years of his rule fighting a civil war against an alliance of religious and democratic groups.

[Pak Daily Times] A boomer rammed his car bomb into the Lakki city cop shoppe in Lakki Marwat district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, formerly NWFP, aka Terrorism Central on Monday, killing 19 people, including nine coppers and three students, senior officials and police said.
"The minion of Evil rammed an explosive-laden vehicle into the rear wall of the cop shoppe at 7am, which was reportedly housing an estimated 40 to 50 coppers at the time, resulting in killing 19 people and maiming 34 others," Lakki Marwat District Coordination Officer (DCO) Ayaz Mandokhel told Daily Times.
The DCO said the attacker chose the rear wall of the police station as the target because the front and sidewalls were heavily guarded and two trenches had been dug on either sides of the post to save it from a possible terrorist attack.
Mandokhel said that recently, security forces had killed a Taliban commander in the area and the Taliban had issued a warning to the local police that they would soon take Dire Revenge™ for the death of their companion.
The Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistain grabbed credit for the attack and warned the government not to use lashkars to fight the group. "After the police, we will attack those active in forming anti-Taliban lashkars if they have not given up their activities," TTP front manAhsanullah Ahsan told AP.

[Pak Daily Times] Panic gripped the Township locality in south of the city when two low-intensity roadside bombs exploded midnight on Monday.
The first bomb exploded near the house of Deputy Superintendent of Police (Legal) Afzal Hussain at A1 Block, slightly damaging a car, which had been parked outside his house, but injuring no one. According to Hussain's son Ali Afzal, all his family members were safe. The second device exploded near the office of the Bomb Disposal Squad (BDS) in C Block. Some eyewitnesses claimed two suspects, who were riding a cycle of violence, had thrown the device that exploded with a deafening sound. No one was injured in the blast, they said.
Police and BDS officials reached the places of incidents soon after the kabooms and collected evidence.
According to Saddar Division Superintendent of Police (SP) Zeeshan Asghar, both blasts were of low-intensity and improvised. However, The infamous However... he said police had launched a search operation to arrest the suspected forces of Evil and they would arrest them soon. He said the police and BDS teams were combing the area to purge it of any possible explosive device.

[Pak Daily Times] The Pak Taliban bombed another government girls' high school in the Landi Arbab area of Beautiful Downtown Peshawar on Monday, police and local residents said. Local residents told Daily Times that gun-hung tough guys planted the explosives around the school during scheduled power outages, which had exploded at 2am. According to police officials, the blast damaged the walls and windows of the school but the institution's watchman remained safe.
Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, formerly NWFP, aka Terrorism Central Education Minister Sardar Hussain Babak said that the number of schools destroyed due to the massive floods and terrorist attacks had risen to 2,000 and Rs 5 billion would be required for their reconstruction. Babak said that the floods had damaged around 900 schools in the province out of which 226 had been completely destroyed. The provincial education minister said that around 1,000 schools had been destroyed due to terrorist attacks. He said that more than 50 percent of the flood affectees who had taken refuge in government schools had returned to their homes.

Three people, including a 17-year-old boy, were killed when government forces fired live ammunition to disperse protesters in Palhalan, a village north of IHK's capital Srinagar, said a police officer on condition of anonymity. Local residents said there was no clash with the troops, but soldiers fired when the protesters refused to disperse. The state government has ordered a probe into the shooting incident. "A clash had occurred near a highway in the morning and much after that we were peacefully protesting in the village," said resident Merajuddin. Later, as news of the shooting spread, thousands of people from Palhalan and neighbouring villages, chanting "Go India, go back" and "We want freedom", marched to a nearby highway and blocked it.

[Pak Daily Times] Investigations by Daily Times have revealed serious concerns, as according to one official, the peace in Karachi is under "imminent threat" from the newly re-organised Jundallah, which has been working in the city since 2003. This is apparently a different Jundullah from the one targeting Iran from Balochistan...
An intelligence official who had been on a hunt went as far as to claim, "Jundullah is the new al Qaeda in Pakistain."
Daily Times can confirm, while talking to various sources including krazed killer commanders, that the attacks in Lahore, which killed 35 people and injured at least 250, was not just a case of sectarian violence, but was planned and executed by sub-contractors of al Qaeda to spread the insurgency to urban areas of Pakistain where, according to one official, "the new Jundullah and old LeJ were used".
Previously, Daily Times was the first publication to report the new al Qaeda and TTP strategy to open new fronts inside urban areas of Pakistain to bring the war to "A areas of Pakistain" and divide the army's effort to curtail these elements in FATA.
Jundullah was founded originally by Jamaat-e-Islami's student wings and Karachi University's student of Statistics, Attaur Rehman, who was jugged in June 2004 on charge of criminal masterminding a series of terrorist attacks in Karachi and targeting security forces and government installations. The eldest son of a local businessman, he grew up in a middle-class neighbourhood in Karachi and worked actively for the Jamaat-e-Islami.
Rehman told his interrogators that he formed Jundullah after the arrest of top al Qaeda operatives in March, 2003, including Khalid Sheikh Mohammad -- the criminal mastermind of 9/11. Jundullah later attacked Karachi Corps Commander General Ahsan Saleem Hayat, bombed a US Consulate and carried out a series of terrorist attacks, including last year's triple bombings in an Ashura procession in Karachi.
A top intelligence chief explained, "So dangerous is Jundullah that they targeted two intelligence bureau officials who solved the Nishtar Park bombing."
Daily Times can also reveal that the recent attack on Shia mourners in Karachi was also the work of Jundullah, who deliberately targeted the mourners at a spot where most of the shops were owned by Pashtuns, but due to good coordination between the administration, Rangers and local Shia leaders "another Bori Bazar fiasco was averted".
On July 3, 2004, the Karachi police jugged two men after the cell phone numbers of two doctors were found in Rehman's mobile phone memory. Dr Akmal Waheed and Dr Arshad Waheed were suspected of assisting wanted Islamic fascistito escape from authorities and providing medical treatment to three runaways, Abu Massab, Gul Hasan and Qassamal Sani, who were maimed in the attempt on Gen Hayat's life.
Their arrest was kept secret for a while, which caused their family to believe that they were kidnapped for ransom.
The arrest of the Waheed brothers was made public on July 13, 2004.
Police also found out that the Waheed brothers had also treated Shahzad Bajwa, alias Abdullah, the deputy of Attaur Rehman after he sustained injuries on March 19, the same year during an attack on a mobile van of the Pakistain Rangers at Bismillah Taqi Hospital in Karachi.
The authorities claimed, "The car recovered from the accused Akmal and Arshad Waheed was the one that was hired by Rehman and which later on remained in the group's use."
Rehman had confessed that Akmal and Arshad had close links to him and were extending help by all means, the police front man said, adding that both men were active JI members and were associated with the JI's medical wing, the Pakistain Islamic Medical Association. He said they were providing active medical treatment and shelter to top al Qaeda runaways and had been suspected of treating Osama Bin Laden's kidneys as well.
Both doctors were eventually acquitted on July 11, 2006 in an appeals court. Following his acquittal, Arshad shifted his activity to South Wazoo and ran a clinic in Wana. Arshad was allegedly killed in a US missile attack in the area.
Later, interestingly, al Qaeda's media wing, Al-Sahab Media Foundation, released a third part of a series of videos entitled 'The Protectors of the Sanctuary'. This was also the first time that al Qaeda used Urdu in there video instead of Arabic. The 40-minute compilation video commemorates Dr Arshad Waheed.
A Western diplomat concluded, "The LeJ is basically Jundullah who had not only formed ideological links with al Qaeda but is protecting al Qaeda in urban areas."

Karachi is in Sindh, and most Sindhis would gladly make war against Jamaat-i-Islami jihadis. In fact, the largest Sindh party - the MSM - has a policy favoring abolishment of the JI as a terrorist group (which it is). In addition, a majority of Punjabis would happily wage a dirty war against the JI. What stops them? American governments insist on working for inclusion of JI elements in the democratic process, even though the JI founder - Maulani Maududi - found that democracy "seizes sovereignty from allah."
By the way, Jamaat-i-Islami (Islamic Society) runs both the Islamic Society of North America and the Islamic Circle of NA, from their Peshawar base. And...the ISNA receives and has received millions of dollars from the State Dept for "consultation on islamic affairs."
If the JI, etc were declared terrorist organizations, then the slaughter of same - which should have commenced in mid September of 2001 - can at long last begin.
If America is ever destroyed, the conditions of same will be: the last US President will be some short sighted goof who chimped about "democratic values," in face of an enemy that needs to die rather than vote.

[Al Arabiya] Iraqi security forces were under the spotlight Monday after a coordinated suicide kaboom on an army complex killed 12 people, with U.S. troops among those who fired back in a bid to repel the operation.
American involvement in the response to Sunday's attack was the first reported such engagement for U.S. forces in Storied Baghdad since they declared an official end to combat operations in Iraq five days ago.
The morning attack targeted Rusafa military command headquarters, which only three weeks ago was hit by a massive suicide kaboom that killed dozens of young men preparing to sign up.
Sunday's kaboom was the biggest to hit Baghdad since the recruitment center attack, and it came four days after U.S. forces officially transformed their role in Iraq from a combat mission to "advise and assist" operations, with fewer than 50,000 U.S. troops now stationed here.
Accounts varied between witnesses and U.S. and Iraqi security forces, but the capital's security command said five boomers had approached the compound in a minibus.
US troops in action
One was fired upon as he got out of the vehicle and his boom jacket detonated, Baghdad operations command said in a statement.
Two others fled to a nearby building, while the remaining two drove the vehicle towards soldiers, setting off their payload before they could be stopped.
Lieutenant Colonel Eric Bloom said a team of U.S. military advisers is stationed at the complex, and when the attack came its security team provided "suppressive fire" against a building where the two Orcs and similar vermin were hiding.
"The team was there, and there was a small security element with them, and they did provide suppressive fire," Bloom told AFP.
"They provided suppressive fire while the Iraqi army got into position to go in (to the building). There was some return fire -- the Orcs and similar vermin were firing down into the compound."
"It went on for mere minutes, it was over very quickly."
He added that the Orcs and similar vermin detonated their boom jackets before Iraqi soldiers could capture them.
Under the terms of a bilateral security pact, American soldiers are allowed to return fire in self-defense, and take part in operations if requested by their Iraqi counterparts.
Baghdad operations command, which is also based at the complex that was attacked, put the toll at 12 dead and 36 maimed. It was unclear how many of the victims were soldiers.
Bloom could not say how many U.S. soldiers were involved in the incident, but said none was maimed. He added that the U.S. military had provided bomb disposal support as well as surveillance with drones and Apache helicopters.
"I was waiting with three of my colleagues near an armored car (when the attack occurred)," a policeman told AFP on condition of anonymity from Baghdad's Medical City hospital, slumped against the wall of the emergency room with bandages covering gunshot wounds to both of his legs.
"I was shot in two places, and I tried to hide behind the car. When I looked for my colleagues again, they were not there -- all I saw was blood and the vests that they had set aside."
The policeman, visibly shaken, added that the vehicle that exploded was a red car that passed through a preliminary search before exploding at a second checkpoint.
The largest blast sent plumes of smoke into the skies over the capital, with nervous soldiers frisking any civilians who crossed Bab al-Muatham bridge, which connects the west side of Baghdad to Rusafa in the east.
The kaboom caused extensive damage to nearby buildings and Dr Adil Saloom, director of the hospital's emergency department, said 20 patients had been treated.
The Rusafa headquarters, responsible for security on the eastern side of Baghdad, was being used as an army recruitment center on Aug. 17 when a boomer detonated his payload, killing 59 people.
The apparent spike in violence -- July was Iraq's deadliest month in more than two years -- comes amid a political impasse in which no new government has been formed since a general election in March.

[An Nahar] Video footage released by the Israeli army on Sunday of a suspected Hizbullah arms cache, which accidentally exploded last week, shows people removing long-range rockets from the structure and transferring them to other locations.
Several kabooms were heard at the three-storey building in the southern town of Shehabiyeh on Friday.
The Israeli army "immediately dispatched an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) to film the scene and defense officials said that the home was previously known to Israel as a significant arms cache used by Hizbullah fighters in the area," the Jerusalem Post said Monday.
It said the footage shows a pillar of smoke rising from the home as people, likely Hizbullah operatives, cordon off the street below and prevent Lebanese soldiers from approaching the scene of the blast.
In addition, the footage shows a canvas sheet spread out atop part of the roof, likely to cover up the crater caused by the kaboom, the newspaper said.
Despite the broad daylight, Hizbullah began evacuating some of the weaponry from the site, including 107 and 122 mm rockets, according to the Post.
Hizbullah continued to empty the building of its rockets at night, it said. Some of them were taken to nearby homes and others to a mosque in Nabatiyeh, according to the Israeli army footage.

The Israelis need a systematic approach. Once they identify a Hezbollah arms cache with W Band radar from an aircraft that can look through the roof, then map the cache, and send out a sniper with a .50 cal with incendiary rounds.

Real bummer when all or your mosque's storage spaces are filled up and you have to out sourcing to houses. Funny how once again it is shown that the Lebanese army is nothing but a cat's paw for Hizbullah. They could even get in to check out the cache for damage. Of course knowing the L. army, they are probably more worried about what they gave Hizbullah going to waste.
[An Nahar] Eighty-four people have been charged in connection with last month's bloody street battles in Beirut's Borj Abi Haidra neighborhood between the Hezbullies and Al-Ahbash, a pro-Syrian Sunni faction.
State-run National News Agency on Monday said 22 of those charged are in custody and that Lebanese authorities were seeking to detain the remaining 62. Justice Minister Ibrahim Najjar said in a statement earlier Monday that the 22 suspects in custody "have been charged with murder, attempted murder, incitement to sectarian strife, arson and the possession of weapons and explosives."
Najjar said the 22 detainees have been referred to the military investigating judge for prosecution.
The statement said military police had interrogated 52 people "of different affiliations" before taking the 22 into custody.
A dispute over a parking space Aug.24 quickly developed into deadly clashes with machine gun fire and rocket-propelled grenades.
Three people were killed including Hizbullah official and his bodyguard and an Ahbash member.
The fighting again put widespread arms in Beirut in the limelight and raised fears of a repeat of May 2008, when Hizbullah and its allies seized west Beirut. At least 100 people were killed in the week-long street battles.

Good for you Fred.....
I was also going to suggest that you run a PHP script using Grep....that would replace common terms with rantburg acronyms....e.g. WOT for war on terror. This would not ruin the experience for most readers, but would help confuse the machine spiders from the greedy soul suckers.

I know about 'Righthaven'. What's the other one?
Righthaven doesn't mine the data. They possibly use Attributor, and Cyveillance. Reuters and AP both use Attributor, which uses its mining ops to sell licenses, while Cyveillance appears to a contract data mining operation. ( Dunno if they are being used or not )
However, http://www.presteligence.com is directly tied to Stephens Media and is most likely their main mining operation.
If you are interested, I have included in the Stephens Media Blocklist I maintain a list of IPs used by Stephen Media and associated media including possible mining companies.

I'd like to recommend smoking in the cigar, cigarette and hookah lounge and bar only, not in the locker room, dining room, greenhouse or spa-solarium. No glass containers in the pool, please.
Special dinner requests to the kitchen at least 48 hours prior, as well as with parties larger than eight. Fish may be limited to catch of the day.

Anybody who has anything even slightly critical to say about Bambi is labeled as a threat and is summarily attacked.
