The retired petrol sector engineer for an Algerian company was abducted April 21st along with his Algerian driver and friend Abidine Ouaghi. Ouaghi was released unharmed a week later in Mali.

ADEN - Yemen's deputy prime minister for internal affairs Sadiq Ameen Abu Ras escaped an assassination attempt on Thursday, after a gun fire exchange between his guards and armed militants in the south.
Witnesses said militants opened fire on the official's convoy in the southern Shabwa province, where he attended celebrations marking the 20th anniversary of Yemen's unity. An exchange of fire took place, after which the militants escaped, and no injuries were reported.

Former British minister and senior Labour MP Stephen Timms escaped death narrowly after being attacked by a knife-wielding Muslim woman, a resident of his constituency.
The woman who was not identified lunged at him and stabbed him twice in the stomach as Timms held a meeting for his constituents in his East London constituency yesterday, before one of aides bravely overpowered the woman, wearing a Muslim full dress and scarf, police said. Had to search through a bunch of articles and go to an Indian source to find out the perp is a muslim. None of the British news saw fit to include that little gem and gave only the vaguest hint: UK Telegraph: ''A 21-year-old woman was arrested at the scene and is currently in custody at an east London police station.''

Shocked witnesses told last night how MP Stephen Timms was stabbed in the gut by a young woman wearing an orange headscarf and veil.
The 21-year-old Asian lunged at popular Mr Timms - a leading anti-knife crime campaigner - as he held a constituency surgery at about 3.15pm. The Labour MP screamed as she calmly pushed a kitchen knife twice into his abdomen before she was wrestled away and disarmed by brave aide Andrew Bazeley.
Last night cops revealed Mr Timms, 54, was lucky to be alive as the blade missed his vital organs. The ex-finance minister was said to be "in good spirits" in hospital, and was to be kept in overnight for observation. Cops, who recovered a knife from the scene, held the woman at a police station as doctors assessed her mental condition.
Married Mr Timms, who held East Ham, East London, in the election with the largest majority in Britain, was attacked at a local council centre in Beckton. A staff member said: "There were two women there with babies. One was with the MP.
"Then they went and another woman who was standing there just sort of lunged at him. Everyone was screaming - it happened so quickly. He was bleeding. You could see it through his shirt.
"He stood up and went into the toilet. Then staff took him into a back office to lay him down until paramedics came. One paramedic was talking to him but he did not reply."
Schoolgirl Sagal Ahmed, who was in the centre's library at the time, said: "I heard screaming and went into the surgery room. There was a skinny woman wearing an orange headscarf and a veil. I was told someone grabbed her after she stabbed Mr Timms. She was led away by police in handcuffs. She didn't say anything."
A police source said: "He could easily have been killed. The knife missed his vital organs. But an inch or two either way and it would have been curtains."
The source added the woman was "quite lucid", did not seem disturbed and had no apparent history of mental problems.
Cops are trying to discover why she wanted to see Mr Timms, known as a committed Christian, and whether she had a specific complaint. But local community worker Rahman Fazlur described Mr Timms as "an excellent MP" and said he had first-rate relations with the Asian community.
The stabbing comes a decade after Lib Dem Nigel Jones was wounded and his aide Andrew Pennington killed in a sword attack during a constituency surgery in Cheltenham, Gloucs.

The name of the attacker looks familiar but Thugburg is kinda flakey to the point where I can't find the initial articles for other people with that surname (which had to do with a mosque in the Birmingham area). I still get the feeling I should recognize the name.

Abu, knife crime is a rumbling issue in the UK - less so at present than it was a year or two ago. Seems to either be on the wane, or getting less attention. IIUC, it's mainly black (on black) youths responsible, and tends to be blown out of proportion by the media. It certainly doesn't have a religious theme. First time I've heard of anything like this. I suspect the perp is a bog standard nutter.

Davison, from County Durham in northern England, made the ricin at his home in 2006 or early 2007, after researching how to make the killer chemical and then buying its easily-sourced ingredients, the Press Association news agency reported. The poison enough to kill nine people was found when police raided the property last June and is now stored at Britain's Porton Down chemical weapons centre.
At an earlier hearing, Davison admitted producing a chemical weapon, preparing acts of terrorism, possessing material useful to commit acts of terrorism and possessing a prohibited weapon.
Edis said the ASF had about 350 members recruited via the Internet, though not all were active. Others accused of being members will face trial later this year.
The court heard the ASF had not picked out particular targets, but had run a training camp and made promotional films. Members had discussed posting cockroaches through letterboxes of restaurants and shops owned by Asians with the aim of encouraging infestations and getting them closed down.

Sixteen people were killed in several shootings in northern Mexico including nine dead after an armed robbery in Lomas Blancas, Chihuahua.
News reports say a total of six suspected bank robbers and three others were killed in separate shootings in Lomas Blancas and Leyes de Reforma near Juarez.
A police agent intercepted a red Ford van in an agricultural district of Juarez late Friday morning following an armed robbery. Six people were killed in the resulting shootout at the scene with another two were wounded.
The interdiction took place near a school where reports say at least 100 shots were fired. Reports also say one police agent was killed.
Police found three more dead they said were executed in Leyes de Reforma some kilometers away from the armed robbery shootout. None of the dead suspected criminals nor the dead police agent had been identified.
Two men were found dead in separate scenes in Chihuahua late Thursday night, according to Mexican news reports. In Parajes del Sur, Chihuahua, an unidentified man was found dead and partially devoured by a dog on the patio of his home.
Reports say police could not immediately determine if the victim died a violent death from a shooting. Investigators at the scene said the death took place some days ago. The dog, apparently unfed, survived by eating the corpse. Reports provided no other details.
In a separate crime, am unidentified 17 year old youth was found shot to death in Los Alcaldes, Chihuahua. The crime scene was on Hagämoslo Juntos street. No other details on this murder were provided as well.
An unidentified man was kidnapped Friday morning from an east side Juarez gym, according to Mexican press reports. Reports say the victim attempted to evade the invasion at the Alcatraz Gym to no avail and was forced aboard an unidentified vehicle which then left. No one was reported hurt in the attack.
Two unidentified men were shot to death in Chihuahua by an armed group of three suspected robbers during a noontime liquor store holdup, according to press accounts.
Police from municipal, state and federal levels were involved in a interception subsequent to the crime, capturing the suspected robbers. Reports from the scene indicate no one else was wounded or killed.
The crime took place at the intersection of Yaquis and Mayan street in the Infonavit Nacional district.
A Chihuahua city bouncer was kidnapped and later found murdered late Thursday night, according to Mexican press reports. Jose Villezcas, 35, was found lying face down with his hands bound, and shot in the head in the Valle de la Madrid district of Chihuahua. Villezcas was the head of security at the Amigo Bar 2 at Francisco R. Almada and Valle Dorado.
Witnesses near the scene reported watching a man executed and tossed overboard a light truck. Investigators at the scene found spent 9mm weapon shell casings.

Police found glass bottles containing gasoline inside the house, which was empty at the time of the attack.
The arson attack came just days after Vilks was beaten while giving a lecture at Sweden's Uppsala University.
In 2007, Swedish regional daily Nerikes Allehanda published Vilks' satirical cartoon to illustrate an editorial on the importance of freedom of expression.
The cartoon prompted protests by Muslims in the town of Oerebro, west of Stockholm, where the newspaper is based. Egypt, Iran and Pakistan made formal complaints.
An al-Qaeda front organisation then offered a bounty to anyone who murdered Vilks and Nerikes Allehanda editor-in-chief Ulf Johansson.
Four men and three women, all Muslims originally from Morocco and Yemen, were arrested in southern Ireland in March over an alleged plot to assassinate the artist.
A relative and a friend of the accused Times Square bomber were both busted in Pakistan Friday as officials continued chasing the money trail in the botched attack.
With three Pakistani nationals in custody in New England and three more in their homeland, authorities were still investigating the $4,000 payoff to Faisal Shahzad at a Long Island Dunkin' Donuts.

Police in Pakistan say at least 60 people have been kidnapped by suspected militants in the country's volatile north-west tribal region. The hostages were seized in Kurram after the vehicles they were travelling in were ambushed by men reportedly dressed as police officers. Women and children were among those taken captive, according to the police.
"The militants were posing as policemen and wearing police uniforms," said Mir Chaman, a senior local police official. He said that all efforts were being made to find the hostages.
[Dawn] Security forces arrested 51 suspects during a search operation in the Bara Tehsil of Khyber Agency on Friday.
Frontier constabulary sources confirmed the arrest, saying that forces conducted a search operation in the Sepah area and recovered a large cache of arms and ammunition from the suspects.

[Al Arabiya Latest] A new "war minister" has been named for the al-Qaeda front organization in Iraq following the deaths last month of two top leaders, an Internet monitoring group reported on Friday.
The US-based SITE Intelligence Group service said that the Islamic State of Iraq (ISI), the branch of al-Qaeda in the country, named him in a statement posted on jihadist Internet forums.
"The new War Minister is identified as al-Nasser Lideen Illah Abu Suleiman, 'The Supporter for the Faith of Allah, Abu Suleiman'," it reported. What's the over/under on his capture or death?
On April 18, two top al-Qaeda commanders, Abu Omar al-Baghdadi and Abu Ayub al-Masri, were killed in a shootout when a joint Iraqi-US force raided their safehouse north of Baghdad. Baghdadi was the political leader of the group in Iraq while Masri, an Egyptian militant, was its self-styled "minister of war."
"The ISI had not previously announced replacements for these top officials," SITE said on Friday.

A DOUBLE bomb attack at a football match in northern Iraq, which was unprotected by security forces, has killed 25 people in the second incident this week to cause mass casualties.
The explosion, which also left dozens wounded, occurred in Tal Afar, 380km north of Baghdad.
Eyewitnesses said around 250 people were watching the game when the attackers struck and that no police or soldiers were on duty.
"We heard a loud explosion and the people behind me shielded me from the shrapnel," said spectator Hussein Nashad, 29. "I ran away, but then I heard someone shout 'Allahu akbar' (God is greatest), and then there was another explosion."
A local police officer said the double blasts were caused by a car bomb followed by a suicide attack. An interior ministry official said 25 people were killed and 100 wounded.
The incident came four days after a devastating series of attacks in five cities blamed on al-Qaeda killed 110 people in the bloodiest violence this year.
RAMALLAH - Israeli settlers shot dead a 14-year-old Palestinian youth in the West Bank overnight Thursday after their car was stoned, Palestinian security sources said.
Ayssar Yasser, from the village of Mizra el Sharquieh, near Ramallah, in the north of the West Bank, was shot and killed after the settlers opened fire when their car was stoned, said a source, citing witnesses.
An Israeli army source confirmed that shots had been fired in that neighbourhood after stones were thrown at the cars of Israeli civilians, but was not able to say if there had been victims.

[Straits Times] POLICE yesterday announced that they had foiled a mass terror plot meant to be carried out on Aug 17, and uncovered a stash of weapons and cash meant for the operation.
A map of Singapore's MRT network was among the stash, but police did not elaborate on its significance.
National Police Chief Bambang Hendarso Danuri said that the attackers had intended to assassinate President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono and government officials on Aug 17 as they attended Indonesia's Independence Day celebration in Jakarta.
The men also planned to target US President Barack Obama, who is scheduled to visit the country later this year, officials said. Finally, the plot included a siege on upmarket hotels - similar to the terror attacks on Mumbai hotels in November 2008 - to kill foreigners, especially Americans.
By killing key Cabinet members and causing mass chaos, the militants thought they could take over the government and turn Indonesia 'from a democratic nation to a nation under syariah (Islamic) law', said General Danuri.
The plot's details were revealed in recent police interrogations of suspected militants, he said in a televised press conference.

At least ten people have been killed in Bangkok as security forces clash with anti-government protesters in a renewed push to reclaim the city center.
On Friday, Thai troops scuffled with the red-shirted protesters in an area of luxury hotels and department stores in central Bangkok.
At least 125 people have been injured in the ongoing clashes, AFP reported. A foreign TV journalist is reportedly among the wounded.
Opposition demonstrators earlier set a bus on fire to prevent Thai troops from moving into their heavily defended camp. The army, meanwhile, used tear gas and water cannons to scatter the protesters.
The authorities have reportedly cut off water and electricity to the camp. Defense Minister Prawit Wongsuwon says the military wants to clear the area to force the opposition into negotiations.
The violence came after bloody overnight clashes between soldiers and the red-shirts.
Tensions intensified after the government canceled an election offer put forward by Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva to end the dispute.
A Thai general, who had been organizing the red-shirts' security, was shot in the head on Thursday as the army mounted a massive crackdown to end the protests.
General,Khattiya Sawasdipol, known as Seh Daeng (Commander Red), is in a Bangkok intensive care unit with a low chance of survival, according to AFP. The army had earlier warned that it would not hesitate to use force against the protesters.
At least 40 people have died since April, while more than 1,400 others are reported to have been injured.
The red-shirts are mainly the supporters of former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra, who was ousted in a military coup in 2006. He has now called on the government to pull back its troops and re-start negotiations with the opposition.
