Paging Miss Marple
Mesa police are investigating an incident Thursday that have left a husband and wife each injured with gunshot wounds, but their statements to police are conflicting as to who was trying to commit suicide, according to authorities.

Police responded to the shooting inside a residence and discovered a woman with a gunshot wound to the stomach and a man with a gunshot wound to the chest, according to Sgt. Edward Wessing, spokesman for Mesa police.

The man told police that his wife was threatening to commit suicide, and the gun went off as he tried to wrestle it away from her, but the woman told police that her husband was trying to commit suicide and the gun went off when she tried to get the gun away from him, Wessing said.

Sweden: Police in moonshine raid on Uppsala farm
Police raided a farm in Uppland in central Sweden on Wednesday and seized a large quantity of illegal moonshine. The farm, located outside of Östervåla north of Uppsala, was vacated when the police arrived to find over 100 litres of moonshine in various plastic containers. Police also seized equipment that was in service making another batch.

The raid was the result of a dedicated operation by a new group formed by local police forces in Uppland to tackle the spread of narcotics in the area. "The group works against current problems with a goal-focused approach based on intelligence. This enables us to focus on an investigation without being called off for traffic duty or the like," Bertil Carlsson at Tierp police told The Local. "The group was set up to mostly target narcotics but we deemed this case relevant."

Carlsson told The Local that although once a common problem in most areas of central and northern Sweden, moonshine production is on its way out. "Smuggled spirits have largely taken over. They just drive a big van down to Germany or over to Finland instead. Illegal liquor remains a big problem," Carlsson said.

The man in question has not yet been arrested but has been called in for questioning, Carlsson confirmed. Home distilling is a crime that can carry a penalty of up to two years imprisonment. Those found guilty can also become liable for income tax.

#5  Used to do business with Norway. Was told a tale that was probably aprocryphal, but at the time, the state liquor store sold alcohol and flavorings. You wanted a bottle of scotch, you bought a bottle of alcohol and the appropriate flavorings, mix, and enjoy. This came to an end when they realized that they were selling significantly more flavoring as alcohol. Supposedly 100K stills in the city limits of Oslo.

Torture Tape Implicates UAE Royal Sheikh
Video at link
A video tape smuggled out of the United Arab Emirates shows a member of the country's royal family mercilessly torturing a man with whips, electric cattle prods and wooden planks with protruding nails.

A man in a UAE police uniform is seen on the tape tying the victim's arms and legs, and later holding him down as the Sheikh pours salt on the man's wounds and then drives over him with his Mercedes SUV.

In a statement to ABC News, the UAE Ministry of the Interior said it had reviewed the tape and acknowledged the involvement of Sheikh Issa bin Zayed al Nahyan, brother of the country's crown prince, Sheikh Mohammed. "The incidents depicted in the video tapes were not part of a pattern of behavior," the Interior Ministry's statement declared.

The Minister of the Interior is also one of Sheikh Issa's brother.

The government statement said its review found "all rules, policies and procedures were followed correctly by the Police Department."

-Short Attention Span Theater-
'Perfect Storm' captain honored
Faced with unfavorable options and forced to make a decision that could cost human lives, Capt. Larry Brudnicki commanded the crew of his U.S. Coast Guard ship through two successful rescue missions during the famed "Perfect Storm" of Halloween 1991.

"I knew if I didn't do anything, the Air National Guard crew would be dead when the sun came up in the morning," said Brudnicki, 59, who retired from the Coast Guard in 2002 and moved to Sunapee with his wife, Carol. "But if I put rescue swimmers in the water, and then I couldn't get them out, my men could die, too."

Brudnicki, who is being inducted into the U.S. Coast Guard Hall of Heroes during a ceremony today, was the commanding officer aboard the U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Tamaroa during a rare confluence of storms that conquered a commercial fishing crew and has since captured imaginations as the subject of a book and a Hollywood film.

Brudnicki and his crew rescued three people who were clinging to a sinking sailboat off the coast of Nantucket and then went on to save an Air National Guard helicopter rescue crew that ran out of fuel while attempting a mission and crash-landed into the ocean.

Brudnicki retold the harrowing tale of the worst weather in a century during an interview yesterday at his home near Sunapee Harbor. "We were like a 1,600-ton cork," Brudnicki said. "We're 40 feet above the water and we're looking up at the tops of the waves."

The sheer power of the ocean continuously rolled the ship from side to side, at angles of 45 to 55 degrees. "Once you get past 45 degrees, it's easier to walk on the wall than it is to walk on the floor," Brudnicki said.

Built in 1943, the Tamaroa was longer and sat deeper in the water than newer Coast Guard ships, giving it more stability. "It was very lucky for them that our ship was the one on patrol," Brudnicki said of the helicopter crew. "If one of our newer ships had tried to do what we did, they would have rolled over."

When the Tamaroa reached the helicopter crew, it was about 2 a.m. Brudnicki had to make a decision: send swimmers in after the four men, two of whom were injured, or find another way to get them out of the water. "I didn't know if I would be able to get anyone out of the water because the weather was so bad," he said, so he decided to use the ship's cargo net.

"Instead of fishing for fish, we were fishing for men," he said. "We'd never done that before and haven't done that since. I'm not sure it was the prettiest rescue, but it worked."

The four men were pulled safely on board. The Tamaroa spent the next three days searching for a fifth man -- the first para-rescuer who had jumped out of the helicopter -- but after an eight-day search, it was determined that he most likely died from the impact with the water.

There was never a rescue mission involving the Andrea Gail, the commercial fishing boat that was the focus of the 2000 movie with George Clooney. Searchers found only one remnant of that ship -- an emergency beacon that washed ashore in the "off" position.

Since his 2002 retirement from the Coast Guard in California, which was attended by all four of the men he rescued from the ocean that night, Brudnicki has worked as a professional speaker, telling the "Perfect Storm" story to corporations all over the world.

"The messages inside the story are about leadership, teamwork, decision-making and risk management," he said, "and those are principles that apply to every corporation."

Today, Brudnicki will be inducted into the U.S. Coast Guard Hall of Heroes during a ceremony at the U.S. Coast Guard Academy in New London, Conn., where Brudnicki graduated in 1972. A plaque commemorating his heroism will be hung on the Wall of Gallantry at the academy. The Brudnickis' three children, Jenny, Karyn and Keith, will join them at today's induction ceremony.

Video of Demjanjuk: walks without assistance
Videos of John Demjanjuk walking briskly indicate he is healthier than he has claimed and is fit to be deported to Germany for helping the Nazis kill Jews, federal prosecutors said late Thursday.

Prosecutors released tapes that show the 89-year-old Demjanjuk getting in and out of a car without help April 6 -- a contrast, authorities say, to the man who groaned in apparent pain as agents carried him from his home April 14 in a wheelchair. The agents were prepared to place him on a plane to Munich that night, but the 6th Circuit U.S. Court of Appeals in Cincinnati granted a last-minute reprieve after agents had taken him from his home. The case is pending on whether Demjanjuk should remain with his family because of health problems.

The videos add to the white-hot debate over whether Demjanjuk, who suffers chronic kidney disease and anemia, should be deported for his wartime past or stay with his family in Seven Hills.

What did it say?
Via Boston Maggie.
Iranian president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad calls Rush Limbaugh and tells him, "Rush, I had a wonderful dream last night. I could see America, the whole country, and on each house I saw a banner."

"What did it say on the banners?" Rush asks.

Mahmoud replies, "UNITED STATES OF IRAN."

Rush says, "You know, Mahmoud, I am really happy you called, because believe it or not, last night I had a similar dream. I could see all of Tehran, and it was more beautiful than ever, and on each house flew an enormous banner."

"What did it say on the banners?" Mahmoud asks.

Rush replies, "I don't know. I can't read Hebrew."

Mike, I can certainly agree with you about ribs visible in the back. I got my growth spurt late going from 5'3" as a HS sophmore to 6'3" when I was 21. Sixty Swine Flu Fatalities In Mexico Confirm Pandemic Start
A rare outbreak of human swine flu has killed at least 60 people in Mexico and spread to the United States where authorities are on alert, the World Health Organisation said on Friday.

"To date there have been some 800 suspected cases with flu-like illness, with 57 deaths in the Mexico City area," Chaib added.

Twenty four suspected cases and three deaths were also recorded in San Luis Potosi in central Mexico.

The above comment confirm that the swine H1N1 in southwestern United States (see updated map) is the leading edge of a H1N1 pandemic that appears to be centered in Mexico.

These deaths should increase the pandemic phase to 6.

#2  "Pandemic," like many other epidemiologic terms, is a term that can only be applied after the fact. Is this the start of a pandemic? Per the CDC, not at this time. There is no way to tell. Those interested in this should go directly to the CDC site mentioned.

#4  There appears to be a lot of misconceptions on this topic on the Net.

There is an outbreak of ILI, influenza like illnesses, in Mexico, primarily in Mexico City. Lots of viruses cause an ILI. Few cases of ILI are influenza.

As far as I can determine, less than 20 samples from Mexico have been tested as pos. for swine flu. That means some have tested negative.

Mexico City has just about the worst air pollution in the world. Its residents start any respiratory illness with damaged lungs. Add to that less than optimal medical care, second or thrid world levels, and it is not surprising that people die at a high rate from ILI.

Take statements by Mexican officials with a grain of salt. It is in their interest to create a panic and obtain lots of US aid dollars. Dollars that will disappear into their bank accounts.

This is the media's plague du jour, since bird flu seems to not have heeded their request to spread.
Posted by: Chuck Simmins || 04/24/2009 19:50 Comments || Top||

#5  THE World Health Organisation has confirmed 18 people have died in Mexico from swine flu and that the outbreak is of "high concern''.
The UN health agency said samples from 12 of the dead are "genetically identical'' to cases detected in the US state of California.

The WHO said earlier there were 60 suspected deaths from swine flu in Mexico where hundreds of cases have been reported.

Forty-five of the fatal cases are being checked in laboratories.

"Of the Mexican cases, 18 have been laboratory confirmed in Canada as Swine Influenza A/H1N1, while 12 of those are genetically identical to the Swine Influenza A/H1N1 viruses from California,'' the WHO said in a statement.

H1N1 caused the 1918 pandemic. Although, low pathogenic H1N1 strains exist in the wild today, causing roughly half of all flu infections in 2006.

So this appears to be a high pathogenic variant of a common flu virus HN strain.

No mention of Hemmoraghic symptoms, but a lethal variant of a common HN strain (rather than a new HN strain) is what people should be afraid of.

Latest 70's Flashback: Swine Flu Reported in TX & CA
Seven people have been diagnosed with a strange and unusual new kind of swine flu in California and Texas, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported on Thursday.

"We believe at this point that human-to-human spread is occurring," Schuchat said. "That's unusual. We don't know yet how widely it is spreading ... We are also working with international partners to understand what is occurring in other parts of the world."

Two of the new cases were among 16-year-olds at the same school in San Antonio "and there's a father-daughter pair in California," Schuchat said. One of the boys whose cases was reported on Tuesday had flown to Dallas but the CDC has found no links to the other Texas cases.

Unusually, said the CDC's Nancy Cox, the viruses all appear to carry genes from swine flu, avian flu and human flu viruses from North America, Europe and Asia.
I guess this is multiculturalism, bacteria-style?
"We haven't seen this strain before, but we hadn't been looking as intensively as we have," Schuchat said. "It's very possible that this is something new that hasn't been happening before."
Or one that somebody whipped up in a lab
The influenza strain is an H1N1, the same family as one of the seasonal flu viruses now circulating. Now that the normal influenza season is waning, it may be easier to spot cases of the new swine flu, Schuchat said.

Only one of the seven cases was sick enough to be hospitalized and all have recovered, Schuchat said. The new cases appear to have somewhat more vomiting and diarrhea than is usually seen in flu, which mostly causes coughing, fever, sore throat and muscle aches.

Cox said the CDC is already preparing a vaccine against the new strain, just in case. "This is standard operating procedure," Cox said.

#1  Just about every corner of the world has medical authorities jumping about because of some new and menacing variety of influenza.

This one came out of the blue with no warning, in an H2H form.

Mexico City is being hit by *something* that has already knocked down at least 500 medical personnel in several different hospitals. Tests are showing two different strains of flu, maybe, in some people. It has killed at least 20 people, and critically, people commonly need ventilation. Ventilators are in short supply.

Egypt just had its 25th Avian flu death, and a strain there is less lethal, but is being spread human to human, mostly among small children, which is extreme danger for a lethal strain to develop H2H transmission.

The Chinese, Vietnamese, Bangladeshi, and Indonesian Avian flu are also carrying out special tasks almost like separate units during D-Day.

#1  I heard Iran had tried to stage their own naval parade.

It ended in tragedy when the marchers drowned.

French minister vows to close Calais migrant camps
CALAIS, France -- France's immigration minister vowed Thursday to tear down tent camps housing hundreds of illegal migrants outside Calais to prevent them from trying to cross the English Channel to Britain.
The next step would be to send them back to their countries of origin, but this is La Belle France we're talking about.
Eric Besson's pledge comes amid concern on both sides of the channel about swelling numbers in the tent camps, a magnet for migrants pinning hopes on Britain for a chance at a better life. The migrants - many from Afghanistan, Iran and Iraq - try to cross the channel on trucks that cross by ferry or undersea train. The issue has been a thorn in cross-channel relations. Besson urged Britain to play "a greater role in the control of its borders," without elaborating.

Besson pledged to clear the tent camps in the woods north of Calais by the end of the year and to dismantle migrant smuggling networks. Besson said "local mafias" run the camps _ including an area dubbed "the jungle" in a field in an industrial zone _ and pledged to "reconquer these lawless zones."

He said the number of migrants has doubled over the past year to about 800, the biggest such figure since the 2002 closure of a Red Cross-run refuge at the request of British authorities.

Besson insisted that France would not open a new center to house the migrants. Instead, he said the government would open information centers and provide health care for migrants _ but at sites at least six miles (10 kilometers) away from Calais.

Aid groups welcome efforts to punish smugglers but argue that Besson's measures will make the humanitarian situation worse.
Always. Nothing we do ever makes things better.
Monique Delannoy, president of Calais migrants' aid group La Belle Etoile, added: "In the coming months, there is a risk of a rise in violence not only against the police but above all among migrants, who will fight each other for a place to stay."

Besson promised to present a plan in June to tighten surveillance of the entrance to the tunnel under the English Channel, near Calais.

Thai state of emergency to end
[Straits Times] THAI Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva announced that he would lift a state of emergency in Bangkok on Friday, saying that his government wanted reconciliation after violent street protests. Mr Abhisit imposed emergency rule in the capital and five surrounding provinces on April 12 after rallies against his government disrupted a major summit of Asian leaders in the coastal city of Pattaya and then spread to Bangkok.

Good Economic News: Ted Rall Laid Off
ht to Patterico who notes:
I don't normally gloat when someone loses their job, but for this tool, I'm willing to make an exception. Especially given that his "job" consists of comparing U.S. soldiers to suicide bombers; mocking widows of terror victims; profiting from Pat Tillman's death; assuming the voice of Iraqi soldiers talking about killing American soldiers; making leftist political hay out of the Nick Berg beheading; lying about lefty blogger vitriol; and suing a guy for making him appear to be a "rude, petty, self-absorbed writer/cartoonist" (which is what he is).

F*ck Ted Rall. I'm glad he got laid off.

and I agree wholeheartedly

#3  Now, now, ladies and gentlemen. In these troubled times we must do what we can to help victims of this terrible economy. It is unseemly to mock him during his time of worry and stress.

I trust that his former employer will expeditiously forward my "care package" designed to help him get new employment ASAP.

Have fun filling out apps for Taco Bell and Walmart, Mr Rall! Best of luck to you in your new career!
