A Jamaatul Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB) operative in handcuffs exploded an improvised grenade at the police superintendent's office in Gazipur yesterday, injuring at least a dozen people, mostly policemen and journalists.
The blast took place at around 4:30pm as four cadres of the banned Islamist outfit, three of them women, were being paraded before the media. Superintendent of Police in Gazipur Abdul Baten said Mamun alias Zahid, the male arrestee, flung himself on the seized grenades on display and managed to pull the pin out of one. And in a split second, he hurled the grenade at the police and journalists there.
Around six hours back, police captured the four and recovered five grenades and a cache of bomb-making materials at a village in Tongi.
Besides the militant, nine policemen and three journalists were injured in the explosion that had the hallmarks of a suicide attempt.
The wounded cops include Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Joydevpur Police Station Abdur Rashid, OC Abdul Hanif of Detective Branch in Gazipur, sub-inspectors (SI) Omar Faruq and Alam Chand of Tongi Police Station, Special Branch SI Mamun, SI Delwar Hossain, constables Sajib, Neyamat and Latif and the newsmen are Nasir Uddin of ntv, Fazlul Huq Morol of channel i and local journalist Dablu Rahman. They were first rushed to Gazipur Sadar Hospital. But as their condition worsened, six of them were taken to the Combined Military Hospital (CMH) and two to Pongu (orthopaedics) Hospital in the capital.
The Gazipur SP said they believe the JMB cadres were preparing to attack programmes of International Mother Language Day in the capital today.
Meanwhile, a Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) team arrested three more members of the militant group in raids at Konabari and Uttarkhan of Tongi in the afternoon. They also seized two grenades and CDs and books on jihad.
Police sources said with help from locals, Tongi police caught JMB ehsar (full-time member) Mamunur Rashid alias Zahid, 40, at Ghartoil village at around 10:30am. Minutes later, they raided a rented house and arrested the female members--Mina, 45, Marzia, 25, and Noor Jahan, 32. They also recovered explosive substances and books on jihad.
Police took the arrestees and seized materials to the SP office for the press briefing at around 4:00pm. They said at least 500 bombs could be made of what has been recovered.
Eyewitnesses said the grenade exploded with a huge bang, and those present at the scene were pitched onto the floor on impact.
Sources said the Rab personnel had been trying to nab the JMB men for the last 15 days. On December 18, they conducted a swoop at Ghartoil. They gave their phone numbers to the villagers and requested them to inform them the moment they see Mamun around. Then, early morning yesterday, a local spotted Mamun, and called the Rab numbers. But as the elite crime busters did not respond, he contacted the Tongi police.
Soon, a team led by SI Sirajul Islam went to the village. As Mamun saw them coming, he tried to run off but in vain. Later, police surrounded the house that he and six others rented on February 1 from Yusuf Ali, a Bangladesh expatriate in Saudi Arabia.
Sources said Mamun hails from Raikona village of Gaibandha district. He stands accused in at least five cases filed in the district for involvement in militancy.
During primary interrogation, Marzia said her husband Al-Amin, Noor Jahan's husband Asif Suman and her parents had also been living with them. But they fled, sensing police presence. Earlier, they lived in another house in the same village.
Additional Inspector of Police (admin) NBK Tripura told The Daily Star last night, "The arrests and recovery prove that the militants are still alive and kicking." He however said police is sincere in fight against militancy.
Queried how someone in handcuffs managed to detonate the grenade and throw it at others, he said, "The law enforcers must be more cautious in handling militants."
RAB DRIVE
A team from Rab headquarters arrested JMB's chief coordinator Motasim alias Basir alias Nasir at Konabari of Tongi and ehsar Moyej and associate coordinator Mizan at Uttarkhan at around 4:45pm
Lt Col Majid, director of Rab intelligence wing, told The Daily Star, "Motasim's father Zillur is now in jail. He too was arrested for JMB connection."
Sources said Motasim, who is also commander of JMB Dhaka zone, hails from Mollarhat of Bagerhat, Moyej from Bhola and Mizan from Noakhali. Also a Majlish-e-Sura member of the militant group, he has been in charge of the outfit's finances. Besides, he has been leading the legal efforts to free JMB men behind bars.
Meanwhile, the Rab and police have beefed up security in and around the venues of Amar Ekushey (February 21) programmes.
On August 17, 2005, Jamaatul Mujahideen staged near simultaneous blasts in 63 out of 64 districts, and left the nation rattled. They struck again on November 14 the same year killing two senior assistant judges and wounding three people in a suicide bomb attack in Jhalakathi.
Besides, the outlawed outfit killed nine more people including two lawyers and a police constable and injured 78 others in two suicide blasts in Chittagong and Gazipur on November 29.

Sister married to al-Haq? In the computer business in Orange County? In about 2003, computers were seized from an Iowa home, causing a stir because they were related to a terrorist investigation being conducted in Orange county, CA but no more was ever said about it. Apparently no one was living in the house north of Des Moines at the time, so it seemed like an odd connection, but Iowa, like many Midwest states, also absorbed quite a few refugees.

NATO supplies to Afghanistan were temporarily suspended as militants blew up a bridge in the Khyber Agency in northwest Pakistan.
It's almost as if someone has a strategy ...
Local officials told our Press TV correspondent on Friday that unknown militants planted three bombs under the Zen Tara Bridge in the Wali Khel area of Khyber Agency. The first bomb detonated destroying the bridge and cutting off all NATO supplies.
After the blast, security forces cordoned off the area and the Frontier Corps (FC) personnel were called to defuse the two other bombs. An FC personnel was injured while he was trying to defuse it. The destruction of the bridge temporarily suspended traffic including NATO supply vehicles. However, after three hours, the security forces made other arrangements and traffic was restored via another route.

Let's trade Afghanistan to Cuba for a dozen good cigars. It's better than putting up with the Pashtun backstabbing for the next 50 years. Either that, or carve out a "Pashtunistan" from the Pashtun-occupied portions of Afghanistan and Pakistan, and let them kill each other.

A-stan is a waste of blood and treasure. It will never be anything but a shithole. Make some show of "peace", get out, but let them know in very clear terms that if anything happens that can be tied to that area (as if that is going to be difficult) then we will come in and flatten the place (from the air...maybe from space).

(AKI) - A bomb blast at a funeral procession in Pakistan's troubled North West Frontier Province on Friday killed at least 25 people and injured 60 others. Ah, Pakistain! Where there's a holy man on every street corner and nothing's sacred.
The attack took place in the city of Dera Ismail Khan, located 270 kilometres southwest of of the capital Islamabad, during a funeral procession of Shar Zaman, a Shia Muslim leader who was assassinated by unknown gunmen on Thursday.
It was not clear whether the attack - aimed at a crowd of 1,000 people - was carried out by a suicide bomber. No militant group has claimed responsibility for the attack. However, there have been persistent clashes in recent years between the Sunni majority and the Shia minority.
Following the attack, angry mobs began rioting, shops were ransacked and buses were set on fire.
The Pakistani military then imposed a two to three day curfew and security forces have orders to shoot at sight, said Pakistan's Geo News.
Pakistani president Asif Ali Zardari and prime minister Yousaf Raza Gillani strongly condemned the attack and said jointly that the government would not give into extremists, militants or terrorists and would take all necessary measures to establish law and order.

"Sean had obviously done something extraordinarily important," Petraeus said later. "What you had there was the first really significant example of the concept of reconcilables and irreconcilables."
Petraeus already knew that he wanted his troops to go out and protect the population. In Ramadi, he learned that "a key way of implementing that is not just living with them, it is also ... literally separating them, protecting the population from the irreconcilables. "That means you have to know who the reconcilables are and who the bad guys are, and then of course try to achieve some separation and protect the one from the other."
Chiarelli, the number two US commander in Iraq in 2006, said that MacFarland's operation marked the first time in the Iraq war that a counterinsurgency campaign had been conducted and then had been sustained by the succeeding unit. "Sean was the first guy who did it and it stuck for the guy who followed," he said.
Upon arriving in Iraq, Odierno would seek to build on what MacFarland had started. "He's the guy who put this together" that is, how to operate differently and more effectively in Iraq, Odierno said later. "Once they cleared Ramadi, and they stayed in Ramadi with a significant amount of force, that was the tipping point.

Al-Qaeda in Mesopotamia - which had major support in Sunni, Iraq - lost most when their presence became a liability as Shiites began winning battles with them. The fact that many were foreigners, didn't help either. It was the Sunni need to halt further erosion of their power that led them to accept the occupiers as power brokers. Sunnis had boycotted the first elections. Sunnis and Shiites have been fighting since 636 AD, and any peace arrangement has to be seen as transitory. MacFarland is a great tactition, but strategic aspects of post-2006 events, were out of his scope.
Aswat al-Iraq: Policemen in Basra arrested 38 wanted persons for suspected involvement in "terrorist and criminal" charges while 35 unlicensed vehicles were seized in search raids in different areas of the province on Friday, police said. "Three were arrested on terrorist charges and 35 others on criminal charges," the province's police department's information office told Aswat al-Iraq news agency.

A Katyusha rocket fired from Lebanon struck northern Israel on Saturday, lightly wounding two people, the Israel Defense Forces said. Another three people were treated for shock, and a house was damaged.
In Beirut, a Lebanese security source said Israel had responded by firing at least six artillery shells into southern Lebanon. The IDF Spokesperson Office said Israel held the Lebanese government and the Lebanese army accountable.
The rocket exploded a few meters from a house, where a 20-year-old was lightly injured in her sleep. "Shattered glass was scattered all over the house," her father said. "Not a single window pane remained intact."
The leader of the local council said that the incident came "out of the blue." Because of the stormy weather, he said, some people thought that the explosion was a thunder.
The Lebanese source, asking not to be identified, said: "Two rockets were fired from the area of Mansouri, south of Tyre, towards the direction of Israel." "One of these rockets landed (within Lebanese territory). The other rocket's location has not been determined," said the source.
A statement from Lebanese Prime Minister Fouad Siniora's office said Lebanon was committed to implementing UN Security Council resolution 1701 which ended a month-long war between Israel and Hezbollah guerrillas in 2006. He said the attack threatened the area's stability and condemned Israel's artillery fire.
"Prime Minister Siniora (said) the rockets launched from the south threaten security and stability in this region and are a violation of resolution 1701, and these issues are rejected, condemned and denounced... Israeli artillery (fire is an) inexcusable violation of Lebanese sovereignty," the statement said.

My guess is Hezbollah is betting that Ogabe will prevent Israel from retaliating with an invasion. Of course, if Ogabe does this, he will lose the Jewish vote - and more importantly, Jewish campaign contributions. Hezbollah is making a very risky bet here.

The official says police saw flames and smoke coming from what later turned out to be a tunnel entrance. They pulled two men from the tunnel.
A medical representative in North Sinai, Imad Kharboush, said one man died from his injuries. He said the other man, who was badly burned, escaped from the hospital.
The tunnels are used to smuggle food, supplies and weapons into the blockaded strip. But especially weapons ...

Palestinian militants in the Gaza Strip on Friday fired 10 mortar shells and a Qassam rocket at the western Negev, causing no casualties. Israel Defense Forces troops operating in the Kissufim area identified the explosions and opened fire in the direction of the launchers across the border.
The strikes came amid an apparent stalemate in Gaza Strip truce negotiations, following Israel's demand that a cease-fire be linked to the release of abducted Israeli soldier Gilad Shalit. Defense official Amos Gilad, who has been negotiating with Egyptian mediators over the truce, reportedly canceled his trip to Egypt on Friday, according to the Arabic daily Al-Hayat.
Five Qassams exploded in open areas of the western Negev on Thursday, three in the evening and two in the morning. In response to the morning attack, Israel Air Force warplanes bombed six smuggling tunnels along the Gaza-Egypt border, the army said.
There were no reports of casualties, but the attack did cause secondary blasts, according to the Israel Defense Forces, which indicated that explosives were hit in the air strike.
The strikes took place about 30 kilometers from where a group of U.S. lawmakers was visiting.
Earlier Thursday, the IDF hit a Palestinian militant attempting to plant a bomb on the Israel-Gaza border, lightly wounding him.
