A surprise was in store for a teenaged mugger who tried to steal a carton of cigarettes from a blind man in a German railway station: the victim was the former world champion in blind judo.
Police said Monday the youth, 17, vainly demanded the pack, then punched the ex-champion in the face.
The judoka threw the youth on the ground and pinned him down till police, called by a passer-by, reached Marburg Station.

ENCINO, Calif. -- A second woman is complaining after an airline took issue with her sexy attire. Setara Qassim said she was flying home to Burbank, Calif., from Las Vegas in June when a Southwest Airlines flight attendant gave her a blanket and told her to cover up.
"The flight attendant came up to me and asked me if I had a sweater, and I said, 'No, because why would I pack a sweater in the heat?'" Qassim said. "So I asked her why, and she said I needed to cover up."
Just last Friday, a woman from San Diego told a similar story to the "Today" show. She said a Southwest Airlines flight attendant had also taken issue with the propriety of her attire. Kyla Ebbert, 23, wore the exact same outfit on "Today" Friday morning. Ebbert said she was allowed to stay on the flight after she agreed to pull up her tank top and pull down her skirt.
NBC News was not able to reach Southwest Airlines in connection with Qassim's claims, but the airline did release a statement last week in response to the incident involving Ebbert.
"Southwest Airlines was responding to a concern about Ms. Ebbert's revealing attire on the flight that day," the statement said. "As a compromise, we asked her to adjust her clothing to be less revealing. She complied and she traveled as scheduled. When a concern is brought to our employees' attention, we address that situation directly with the customer(s) involved in a discreet and professional matter. Fortunately, as an airline that carries approximately 96 million customers a year, those situations are extremely rare."

I've seen young women board with no underwear - upper or lower. At some point freedom of expression needs to compromise with the basic self-control decencies that allow a society to function.

Most people sit facing forwards and wouldn't be able to view her outfit once she sat down so I'm not sure what the big deal is. Perhaps the flight attendants are getting turned on and not doing their jobs or something.

Flight attendants in the 60s wore skirts about the same length. I wouldn't be surprised to find out someone or some group is specifically reporting the outfits and trying to enforce their own agenda.

Agreed, we have fine establishments for this and Southwest air is not one of them. Bet they let her on at Hooter air. I fly 3 or more times a month and my levels of disgust are constantly being raised. drunks, people who never bathe, or some jerk who thinks his seat is an office.
BTW LOTP I have not hit the tip in a while, can you see the catholic guilt? I will make it all better, thanks for the remind, even though its not what you meant.

You realize that if a male 20 year old, as opposed to a female 20 year old, were to be flashing his sexual organs to a planeload of strangers he'd probably wind up on some sort of national offender's database.
A CHINESE man due to be deported to face serious criminal charges at home is in a Sydney hospital after swallowing razor blades.
The man, known as Mr Qi, has been held in detention since his visa was revoked in February 2004, when Chinese authorities issued a warrant for his arrest. He had been due to be deported to China today to face charges of kidnap and murder, after the Federal Government was given an undertaking from Beijing that he would not face the death penalty if convicted.
So he decided to off himself?
Refugee Action Coalition spokesman Ian Rintoul said today that Mr Qi was in Bankstown Hospital in Sydney after attempting self-harm.
Mr Qi had swallowed razor blades last night inside Villawood detention centre, he said. "He would rather die here than go back," Mr Rintoul said. "The deportation's off today but how much longer it's off I don't know. It might stall things for a little while."
Mr Qi had previously been on suicide watch at Villawood, Mr Rintoul said.
In parliament, Human Services Minister Chris Ellison at first declined to answer directly when asked by Australian Democrats senator Andrew Bartlett if Mr Qi had been taken to hospital after attempting self-harm.
But a spokeswoman for Immigration Minister Kevin Andrews later confirmed the episode. "(The razor blades) have been successfully removed at the hospital today," she said. "The Australian Government intends to have him removed from Australia as soon as he is assessed as fit to fly."
Refugee advocates are considering taking out an injunction to block Mr Qi from being sent back to China, where they fear he could be executed. Asylum Seeker Resource Centre co-ordinator Pamela Curr said yesterday she was concerned that Mr Qi was being sent home on the basis of dubious documentation. She feared the man named on the unsigned and undated Chinese arrest warrant was not actually Mr Qi, citing insufficient identity checking.
The United Nations has asked the Government to postpone the deportation pending further investigations.

How did this guy hear about Joe Pyne, the old time Radio Talk Show guy...

A detained judge who bore signs of being beaten in custody in southern China was not killed but died of "adult sudden death syndrome", according to an official probe quoted by state media Monday. Authorities conducted an investigation into the death of former judge Li Chaoyang after he was found dead in a cell in early April in the southwestern Guangxi region but found nothing suspicious in his death, Xinhua news agency said.

A judge in the Pingle county court in Guangxi, Li was detained on March 23 for alleged bribe-taking. He was found unconscious in his cell in the city of Guilin on April 2 and later died in hospital, Xinhua said. Relatives said Li's body was bruised, his face lacerated, and he had a tooth missing. They demanded a probe into his death, Xinhua said. Photos were later posted online purportedly revealing the injuries.
A joint investigation by law enforcement personnel from Guilin city and the Guangxi regional government said the injuries were sustained when Li fell during repeated escape attempts, adding he later refused medical treatment.
Li died of "adult sudden death syndrome that might have been sparked by an unstable state of mind, and abnormal sleeping and eating habits," Xinhua quoted the investigation report as saying.

They should have put the death down to "heart failure". Of course, since if your heart is beating, you are considered to be alive, then you live until your heart fails. Sometimes, people's hearts fail because of a bullet, or massive head trauma rather than natural causes, but it is still heart failure.

When presidential candidate Ron Paul appeared on The O'Reilly Factor Monday, host Bill O'Reilly repeatedly pressed Paul to agree that Iran is a dangerous enemy which will pose an imminent threat if the US leaves Iraq, meanwhile interrupting every one of Paul's attempts to explain his own views on the negative results of US policy in the Middle East.
"Do you fear Iran intruding on the whole Persian Gulf if the United States -- as you asked for in the debate last week -- left the region?" O'Reilly demanded.
"I fear that they might want to do that, but I think our policy is leading to that," Paul replied. "Our policy is doing everything conceivable to enhance Iran. Just the whole invasion of Iraq has helped Iran."
"That may or may not be true," retorted O'Reilly. "We have to assume that Iran is an aggressive nation, that it wants to injure the United States, and it's going to use surrogates to do it. ... When a country's seeking a nuclear weapon that's a danger to the USA ... and you want to withdraw from the theater, that gives them carte blanche to do what they want, does it not?"
"I think you're concerned about the wrong country right now," Paul responded, citing both the Saudi origins of al Qaeda and Pakistan's possession of nuclear weapons.

Let's put aside his denied (by himself) but undeniable (by the facts) anti-Semitism - an anti-Semitism shared by, at minimum, a plurality of hard-core libertarians (Rockwell, Sobran and Raimondo leap to mind).
Ron Paul is an ideologue dedicated to a meme set as unrealistic and utopian as that of the left, albeit in a very different direction. In a world with no external enemies and where every single human was guided by Judeo-Christian values that create strong private social norming, we could get pretty close to his hard core anarcho-capitalistic, down-the-line libertarian utopia.
Unfortunately for his theories, the world is NOT like that, and won't be for millenia, if ever.
Capital-L libertarians are right about a number of things, but they are right in the manner of the drunk at the end of the bar who says one brilliant thing followed by nine stupid, outrageous, hurtful, and dangerous things. Most of the important (read, good for preserving a free, capitalist West) parts of libertarianism have already existed in conservatism for decades.
