French Strip for Art (eye warning)
Careful clicking the link, you might need a brillo pad for your eyeballs.
Almost 1,500 men and women stripped naked in the name of art in the French city of Lyon. They gathered before dawn to join the latest nude photo shoot by New York artist Spencer Tunick. Directed by the artist from a crane, they posed with arms and legs in the air between shipping containers in Lyon's port, reports the BBC.

Previous shoots have been held in New York, Belgium, Barcelona and Brazil, as well as London and Tyneside in the UK.

Men and women of all ages, most of them from the Lyon area but some from further afield, arrived in the city at 4.30am to receive their instructions. As dawn broke, the volunteers stripped naked and scurried into place, ready to move into formation with arms and legs held high.

Questioned after the shoot, the models said they had signed up because they're daffy "for the experience" or they're unemployed anyways so what else is there to do "for art's sake".

The photographs will go on display in Lyon in November, as part of the city's biennial modern art festival. Tunick, 38, carried out the world's largest nude photo shoot in Barcelona in June 2003, when 7,000 volunteers stripped for the camera.

#1  Sometimes, I think art lovers are just gullible. Some "artist" has gotta be laughin' his a(*&^#$ off right about now.

And, is it some unwritten law that the uglier the person the more they wanna be nudists??

#2  I'm sorry, that's not art... not even comedy. That picture, my friends, is farce. And no doubt the parents and the children of the participants will quickly realize it. And the poor darlings will spend the rest of their pneumonia-shortened lives either lying or boasting about their participation, to the disinterest of every audience they bore.

Dog shoots man
From correspondents in Sofia
A TUSSLE over prey between a Bulgarian hunter and his hound ended when the dog shot the man. The man lost his temper and began beating his Deutsch-Drahthaar hunting dog with a rifle when the animal refused to release a killed bird it had brought back. But the dog's paw caught the trigger and the hunter was blasted with buckshot. The extent of his injuries was not reported - but local media said the dog injured a paw.

Fat elephants put on the treadmill
From correspondents in Anchorage

THE Alaska Zoo in Anchorage is home to what is believed to be the world's first elephant treadmill.

The zoo took the unusual step of installing the 6m by 2 1/2m treadmill to help Maggie the elephant fight the battle of the bulge.
At last weigh-in in August 2004, Maggie tipped the scales at 4132kg - about 450kg overweight. Good news: that really puts my 20kg (44lbs) of lard in perspective. Bad News: with a 11-12% overweight, Maggie's actually slimmer than me... damn!

Zoo director Tex Edwards said the elephant could learn to use the treadmill to lose weight.

"Every time we've undertaken to teach Maggie something new she has always learned it faster than we anticipated," Mr Edwards said.

Zoo officials said one challenge facing captive elephants was making sure they exercised.

In the wild, African elephants spend their time foraging for food. To simulate that experience, Maggie now has to reach for her food.

#1  The Anchorage zoo is best known for, of all things, a polar bear. Twice now, drunks have snuck into the polar bear's compound to fight the bear. The first one bopped the bear on the nose with his fist, so the bear whapped him with a paw, sending him flying backwards 25 feet into a wall. He sobered up quick.

The second drunk realized his mistake early, and in trying to get back out, lost a tennis shoe. A photograph of the bear gnawing on a Nike soon graced t-shirts all over town, captioned "bear: 2, drunks: 0"

I visited early in the morning, about 10:30am, and heard a beautiful wolf pack group howl. I just had to see the wolves, so I walked to where I heard the pack, only to find a single wolf, who was recuperating from some leg injury.

"Where are the wolves?", I asked a zoo employee, who replied, "Oh, those aren't *our* wolves. They just hang out outside the fence over there."

I recommend visiting Anchorage the first week in July. It is a paradise, with weather in the 70's, about 20 hours of sunlight a day (what a trip!), greenery, animals and brilliantly-colored flowers everywhere. There is a direct flight from Phoenix, of all places. Prices are ordinary, except there are few gas stations, convenience stores, or even grocery stores.

Arabia
Saudi Arabia: Illegal Alcohol Production on the Rise
Recent reports in the local media giving details of raids on illegal wine factories across the kingdom have caused controversy and shocked conservative Saudi society were alcohol is banned. A number of government departments took part in the crackdown, including the Commission for the Promotion of Virtue and Prevention of Vice, with others providing general assistance. On Tuesday, a residential home in the al Rabwa neighborhood, east of the capital, was broken-into and a complete alcohol-producing factory was uncovered along with 15 thousand Saudi riyals (4000 USD) worth of goods ready to be distributed across the Kingdom. The house had been rented by a Saudi national in charge of the marketing side with a number of workers, originally from Africa, overseeing the production. Further searches of the property provided details of how large quantities of wine were being produced, using heavy machinery to process the grapes, rat carcasses to accelerate the fermentation process, as well as sewage water and a several banned chemicals.

Similar equipment was discovered at raided properties elsewhere in Saudi Arabia, none of which followed basic rules of hygiene as they sought to maximize profits with no regards to health and safety. A two-liter bottle of beer can cost as much as 250 Saudi riyals (67 USD) with some producers offering discounts for large orders. On average, the number of barrels used to ferment grapes in each of the twenty illegal factories discovered by the police was 50, holding 500 liters, the price of which was 3.75 million Saudi riyals (999,893 USD),usually sold within a two months period. A single factory could therefore generate 22.5 million riyals every year. Wine bottles, smuggled into the Kingdom and sold on the black market, cost 700 Saudi riyals (187 USD) and are sometimes laden with chemicals to increase alcohol content and volume. Distribution occurs mainly on Wednesdays and Thursdays, when agents deliver their shipments to consumers, in areas designed to evade supervision, usually through trusted intermediaries. Wine merchants conduct their affairs with extreme caution fearing a trap by the moral police.
Does my heart good to know that prohibition isn't working perfectly in Satan's Kingdom. As Franklin is reputed to have once observed, "Beer is living proof that God loves us and wants us to be happy." I think it's that happiness part that makes the Virtuous™ everywhere hate a bit of innocent imbibing.

Chavez Has An Idea: Move The UN To Jerusalem
Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez denounced the U.S.-led war in Iraq on Thursday and told world leaders they should consider moving the U.N. headquarters out of the United States because of it.

The leftist leader said the fact that the war was fought without U.N. authorization showed that Washington has no respect for the world body..."That's why we propose to this assembly that the United Nations leave this country, which is not respectful of the very resolutions of this assembly," he said.

At the end, Chavez's remarks got what observers said was the loudest applause of the summit...

Chavez said U.N. headquarters should be moved from New York to international city "outside the sovereignty of any state," and noted that some have suggested Jerusalem...
Actually, I think having the UN in Jerusalem is a splendid idea, but not for the same reasons. My second choice would be Mogadishu.

Chavez: U.S. Plans to Invade Venezuela
WASHINGTON (AP) - Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez said Friday he has documentary evidence that the United States plans to invade his country. Chavez, interviewed on ABC's "Nightline," said the plan is called "Balboa" and involves aircraft carriers and planes. A transcript of the interview was made available by "Nightline."
Carriers and planes? Boy, ya can't put anything past Hugo.
He said U.S. soldiers recently went to Curacao, an island off Venezuela's northwest coast. He described as a "lie" the official U.S. explanation that they visited Curacao for rest and recreation. "They were doing movements. They were doing maneuvers," Chavez said, speaking through a translator.
"Say Tyrone, check out the blonde at 4 o'clock."
"Wowzers. Gonna try a manuever?"
"Yep, see if we git a little movement."
He added: "We are coming up with the counter-Balboa plan. That is to say if the government of the United States attempts to commit the foolhardy enterprise of attacking us, it would be embarked on a 100-year war. We are prepared." To prove U.S. intentions to invade Venezuela, Chavez offered to send "Nightline" host Ted Koppel maps and other documentation. "What I can't tell you is how we got it, to protect the sources, how we got it through military intelligence," he said. In the event of a U.S. invasion, Chavez said the United States can "just forget" about receiving any more oil from his country.

Europe
Lithuania investigating Russian fighter crash
VILNIUS, Lithuania (AP) - Lithuania on Friday refused Moscow's requests to hand over a Russian pilot whose fighter jet crashed in the NATO member's territory after violating its airspace, saying it must first complete an investigation.

NATO investigators also would study the Su-27 fighter-bomber's flight recorder, or "black box," to determine what caused the crash, Defense Minister Gediminas Kirkilas. "We will not hand the pilot and the black box of the crashed plane over to Moscow until the investigation is completed," Kirkilas said.

The plane, en route from St. Petersburg to the Russian enclave of Kaliningrad, crashed Thursday near the village of Ploksciai, 120 miles northwest of Vilnius. The pilot, Maj. Valery Troyanov, ejected without injury, officials said.

After questioning Troyanov for six hours, Prosecutor Mindaugas Duda said the pilot no longer was a witness but a suspect, and Lithuania had opened a case against him on suspicion of "violating international flight regulations." He did not say why Tryanov's status had been changed.

Troyanov's jet flew in a convoy with other Russian aircraft given permission to fly through an agreed "corridor" over Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania, Lithuanian officials said. The other aircraft reached Kaliningrad safely.

Maj. Gen. Valdas Tutkus, commander of the Lithuania's armed forces, said he believed the pilot did not intentionally violate Lithuanian airspace and that the crash was likely caused by a technical problem. "We knew its precise route and did not feel it posed any threat," Tutkus told the Baltic News Agency, BNS. He said Troyanov sent an SOS signal before crashing that was picked up by air force traffic controllers in neighboring Belarus, who contacted Lithuanian officials on a special hot line.

Kirkilas said Lithuania lacked experts who could examine the black box and would turn to its NATO allies for help. The alliance, which has four F-4 fighters stationed at an air base in Lithuania, scrambled two of its fighters to intercept the Russian plane.

Maj. Karl Heinz Smuda, a spokesman for the German NATO contingent currently policing Baltic skies, praised the response time. "According to regulations, we have 15 minutes to fly to the conflict zone," Smuda said. "Our pilots did it in eight minutes, and we are proud of it. When they arrived, the Russian pilot had already ejected and the fighter was nose-diving to the ground."

The Russian Defense Ministry apologized for the crash and promised to pay for any damage it caused.

The incident was the latest in a series of recent airspace violations by Russian planes in the region. In May, Finland complained that Russian military aircraft had repeatedly violated its airspace over a period of several months. The violations took place over the Gulf of Finland in the Baltic Sea as the jets flew to and from Kaliningrad. Similar alleged violations have been reported in Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania. In November, Estonia filed a complaint with Moscow but said none was serious enough to merit intervention by the four NATO fighters that patrol the airspace.

Turkey seizes over 60,000 KGs of heroin
Turkish authorities seized Friday some 65,488 kilograms of pure heroin in three trucks near the Iranian borders, according to Anadolu news agency. It quoted security sources as saying the police forces stopped three trucks at a border crossing and seized the narcotics, with a value estimated at some USD 800 million. They added that the heroin was destined to be sold in Europe. Drivers of the trucks were arrested and questioned, said the sources. Turkey is a passageway for drug smuggling from Iran and Afghanistan to Europe.

Former SS Member Campaigns in Dresden
The neo-Nazi NPD party has named a former member of the Waffen SS as their candidate in Dresden to stand in general elections Sunday. Franz Schönhuber, 82, was nominated after NPD candidate Kerstin Lorenz died of a stroke earlier this month.

Because of her death, the district will not vote Sunday but on Oct. 2 and the results could decide the election if the race is very close. Schönhuber, a journalist and author, fought in World War II in France and on the eastern front. After the war, he was able to use documents questioning his qualifications for promotion to show that he opposed the Nazis, according to the Süddeutsche Zeitung daily.

He later published a controversial book in defense of the Waffen SS. For years, Schönhuber headed another extreme right-wing party, the Republikaner, which won seats in West Berlin's parliament in 1989. After serving as a member of the European Parliament from 1989 to 1994, he was ousted as party leader and began to publicly back the NPD, though he was not a member. The NPD won 9.2 percent of the state elections in Saxony last year and has 12 members in the state parliament.
It's a small world. I knew a former Waffen SS paratrooper, who had taught political science at a major US university, became a city councilman in a neighboring city, and ended up a powerful State legislator. His son became a US Airborne Infantry officer. Maybe it's in the blood.

Mayer Nagin Says Return: Admiral In charge says Not Yet - Way To Dangerous
"There are health issues that people should be aware of, and the absence of drinkable tap water will contribute to unsanitary conditions," he wrote (Admiral Allen).

As flood water is pumped out and more areas are exposed, "toxins and other environmental hazards may pose additional health risks."

Allen's statement strikes a starkly different tone from the optimistic announcement Thursday by New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin. At a news conference, Nagin announced that residents would be allowed to re-enter -- and "repopulate" -- the city in stages. He called it "a good day in New Orleans."

A federal official involved in behind-the-scenes discussions on recovery efforts told CNN that federal and some state officials were "caught a bit off guard by how forward leaning" Nagin was.

Cheney to Have (Minor) Surgery Next Weekend
Vice President Dick Cheney will undergo an elective surgery next weekend to treat an aneurism in an artery behind his right knee. The condition, discovered earlier this year during a routine checkup, needs to be treated "as to not become a problem over time," Steve Schmidt, counselor to the vice president, said Friday.

"The procedure will be performed under local anesthetic," Schmidt said. "It will take place next weekend. It will involve a short hospital stay. The vice president will return to work shortly thereafter." Schmidt said more details will be announced next week.

Latest Blood-Curdling Threat from Chavez!
The President of Venezuela, Hugo Chavez, said that the world body should move out of New York over the war in Iraq
Bye now. Don't let the screen-door hit you in the ass on the way out.
Venezuela's President Hugo Chavez said on Thursday that the United Nations should have moved out of New York after the United States launched the ungrounded attack on Iraq. In a speech to the U.N. world summit, he also said the United States had failed its own people in its response to Hurricane Katrina, accused Washington of fuelling terrorism and faulted it for its doctrine of pre-emptive military strikes. "Today we know there were never weapons of mass destruction in Iraq but despite that, and going over the head of the United Nations, Iraq was bombed and occupied.
Conflating the Hussein regime with Iraq in general. This is straight from the playbook of Hugo's mentors, the American pop-left and Fidel Castro.
So the United Nations must be pulled out of the United States," Chavez said. The Venezuelan leader also accused the Bush's administration of being incapable of aiding the victims of hurricane Katrina. "There is no government in this country", he said.
Not compared to the kind of totalitarian dictatorship Hugo admires so much
Chavez also slashed a US-backed plan for multilateral action in the new century on terrorism, human rights, development, peacebuilding and UN management reform. Chavez branded the plan "illegal" for failing to respect anti-poverty goals set by a U.N. summit in 2000 and said the United Nations instead needed drastic overhaul.
Goals set by the U.N. have the weight of law? An interesting peek into the Internationalist mindset.
"The United Nations has outlived its model. It's not just a question of bringing about reform. The 21st century requires profound changes," he said.
A broken clock....
After rejecting written notices alerting that his time had expired, Chavez went ahead with his anti-Bush speech and remarked US double standards in its foreign policy.
Ignores a U.N. dictate and accuses us of a double standard? Perhaps time allotment standards are not "goals" and are therefore not legally binding.
The Venezuelan leader noted bitterly that U.S. television evangelist Pat Robertson, a strong supporter of President George W. Bush who called for Washington to assassinate him, remained a free man.
Well, yes, free speech is like that.
"This is an international crime, terrorism," Chavez said, as noticed that Robertson is a frequent visitor in the White House. President Bush did not attend to Chavez speech.
Hugo is certainly easily frightened.... We should organize a campaign to recruit volunteer SUV and pickup owners, freight operators, cargo airlines and anyone else with spare capacity, to help them move.
FEMA's on the way, AC...they'll be here Real Soon Now.

Indonesia sez UNSC should be more Asian
A day after Crown Prince Sultan called for putting restrictions on the use of veto power by the permanent members of the UN Security Council, Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono called for a Security Council that reflects the realities of a changing world, with more Asian seats. He also demanded an end to the veto power of the big five. Yudhoyono’s comments added to demands by developing countries for a bigger voice in the world body, now dominated by the United States and its fellow permanent Security Council members — Russia, China, Britain and France.

Saying that he spoke for 4.5 billion people in Asia and Africa, the Indonesian leader said UN reforms under consideration should make the world body more democratic. “We need a reformed Security Council with a membership that is reflective of global realities. The Asia-Pacific region, home to more than half the human race and cradle of ancient civilizations and religions, should have more seats on the council,” Yudhoyono said. In addition, he said, “We must do away with the right of veto, which often paralyzes the Council.”

Home Front: Culture Wars
African Immigrants and new U.S. citizens question race-category label
North Canyon High School graduate Esosa Joanne Iyoha talks about African-Americans as an outside group.
When the 22-year-old Nigerian immigrant took standardized tests in school, she skipped over the line for African-Americans and marked "other."

Then, if space permitted, she penciled in "African."

"I don’t associate myself with slavery," said the registered nurse at Mayo Clinic Hospital in northeast Phoenix. "And I don’t really associate myself with being African-American."

But Iyoha is black.

And tonight she will stand before U.S. Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O’Connor — with 53 other immigrants from across the globe — and swear allegiance to the United States in a special Citizenship Day ceremony at Gilbert’s Mesquite High School.

Technically, Iyoha will become an African-American.

But the nation might have to rethink its definition of the term as thousands of African immigrants such as Iyoha flock to the United States each year. About 50,000 Africans arrived in 2004 — more than the number who came during any of the peak years of the American slave trade...

These new African-Americans lack ties to American slavery and the inner city culture frequently associated with black America. Many grew up in middle-class, two-parent families and have access to social networks that include doctors, nurses, engineers, professors and business executives.
Iyoha’s father is a microbiologist, her mother is a registered nurse, and the family lives in a two-story stucco house at the foot of a desert mountain...

The wave of African immigration started in the 1970s with refugees such as Harelimana. But thousands of African immigrants today come from stable homes unaffected by war.
"You’re getting the best and the brightest from Africa," said Osaro Ighodaro, assistant academic director at Arizona State University. "People who have the resources are deliberately making the choice to come here..."

#3  I absolutly refuse to answer that or check any box dealing with race. The few times people have tried to coerce me into filling that type of question out my next words were to the effect of"My race, religion, etc.it has absolutly no bearing on this.It shouldn't even be allowed to be asked. If you try to force me to fill it out I will sue your as tomorrow."

#4  A lot of PC organizations have a box for "Native American." Since I was born here, that's what I always check.

Unfortunately, official Federal government forms usually say "American Indian."

#6  I bet if they studied blacks that were born outside the US with those born inside they would find that the immigrants do far better than their American "Cousins." That's because they are programmed to feel like second class citizens by the "Black Leadership" in this country. EX: Colin Powell.

#7  There are a lot of African natives in the health care system. I've noticed anecdotally that there seems to be quite a bit of prejudice against them on the part of African-Americans. I've also noticed that while the first generation usually assimilates as well as any other immigrant group, their kids are under massive pressure to conform to low expectations in the school system.

I knew a very nice lady from Ghana who worked her kazou off to provide a good home for her two kids. The kids, last I saw of them, weren't worth the powder it'd take to blow them away. They were already street thugs.

#8  No bed, Cyber Sarge. The studies have already been done, and black immigrants do about as well as any other immigrants from the same area, and of course, both groups do far better than people who live in the "African-American" culture. Native blacks who reject the ghetto culture also do as well as whites.

Culture matters.

Eritreans Arrest Two U.S. Embassy Workers
Authorities have arrested two Eritrean employees of the U.S. Embassy, the information minister said Thursday. Information Minister Ali Abdou would not say what illegal activities Eritrean authorities suspected the employees were involved in or give any other details. Attempts to reach U.S. Embassy officials by phone and e-mail were not immediately successful.

In October 2001, police arrested two other Eritrean employees of the U.S. Embassy for unspecified reasons and have yet to charge or release them. Eritrea is one of only four African countries that openly supported the U.S.-led war in Iraq. But relations have shown signs of strain. In July, Eritrea asked the U.S. Agency for International Development to stop its operations in the Horn of Africa country without giving any reason. A delegation from the State Department and the aid agency went to Eritrea from Washington last month to discuss the issue. The results of those discussions have not been made public.

Governor of Nigerian State Arrested in London for Money Laundering
British police have arrested a Nigerian state governor and ethnic champion, officials said yesterday, triggering a threat by militants to attack British citizens and oil facilities in the restive Niger Delta. Gov. Diepreye Alamieyeseigha of the oil-rich southern Nigerian state of Bayelsa was arrested Thursday in London and later released on bail pending further enquiries, investigators said.
