Welcome to Hawspipe...
A lefty blogger wrote that he's "a humorless, kooky, uneducated, insular-minded, politically-confused, warmongering Martian buffoon incapable of dealing with subtle and complex arguments." With a resume like that, he can't be all bad. Link's on the left. Enjoy.

I've been a Republican too long...
  • Mark has an entry that talks about "Two good essays on 'Warblogging' by Susanna Cornett and Rich Hailey. Susanna just added a paragraph on Colin Powell and how his blackness isn't (nor should it be) an issue."
It brought me up short. Honest to God, I had forgotten. I actually stopped and thought, "He is?" I just don't notice, because so much more about him is so much more important...

    Den Beste on The McKinney
  • Steven den Beste has a short discussion and dismissal of the pathetic Congresswoman and now conspiracy theorist Cynthia McKinney.
McKinney's primary contribution to national affairs in the past eight months or so has been to make the rest of us wonder where they get the voters making up her safe district.
Black politicians -- at least those who claim apostolic succession from Dr. King -- have essentially replaced the Irish in American politics. The "civil rights establishment" in big cities is really just the latest version of the old Demo political machine. The only difference is that crusading journalists were able to help clean up Irish machines, but because of the supposed "moral authority" of the King priesthood, the media cannot criticize Black machines.

And idiots like Cynthia McKinney, Maxine Waters, and Major Owens are plug-in replacements for Joe McCarthy and Father Coughlin.

Jonah Goldberg's horsewhip is at the cleaners so instead he wrote this about the creature.

    Addendum: Bill Quick reveals that
McKinney has been accepting contributions from the likes of Archer Daniels Midland, Lockheed Martin, and the Machinist and Aerospace Workers, all of whom are likely to benefit financially from increased government defense spending in the wake of 9/11.
Saaayyyy! Maybe she was the criminal mastermind and we owe Binny and Prince Abdullah and Mullah Omar an apology. Now mind you, there's no evidence to support that but... (Dare I say it? Oh, why not?)... "a complete investigation might reveal that to be the case."

    Afghanistan
    Sweep Nets Bad Guys, Weapons
  • International peacekeepers and Afghan forces have swooped on Taliban-al Qaeda hideouts in Kabul, arresting rebels suspected of firing rockets on the capital and seizing 151 Chinese-made rockets, officials said on Thursday. Rocket-propelled grenades, mines and rifles were also seized on Wednesday in what was believed to be the biggest discovery of rebel weapons since peacekeepers arrived in December. General Deen Mohammad Joorat, the Interior Ministry security chief, said there were more arrests of suspects in a plot to kill interim leader Hamid Karzai and ex-King Zahir Shah. "We have also arrested a number of people in Kabul for firing rockets on installations of the ISAF," Joorat told Reuters. "These people seem to have links with the Taliban and al Qaeda."

Joorat said the weapons haul foiled plans for more rocket attacks on the 18-nation International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) in Kabul after two of the 107 mm rockets landed near one of its main installations earlier in the week. Later, four more rockets set to be fired by timers were found aimed at ISAF bases. The raids were part of efforts to stamp out a surge of violence in the past week that has included an assassination attempt on Defense Minister Mohammad Fahim, a rocket attack on peacekeepers and attacks on aid workers.
Either the government's getting more confident, or that bomb scared Fahim into whuppin' some butt. Or both.

North Korea sez time's not right for talks
  • North Korea is prepared to resume discussions with the United States but the conditions for talks are not yet in place, the North's official news agency reported. The report comes as the U.S. special envoy on Korean affairs, Jack Pritchard, wraps up a trip to South Korea on Friday that was seen as a preparatory step toward talks with the North.
"Try us again next Thursday... No, not then. We're doing our hair. Saturday! Saturday's usually good."

    Jewish man attacked in Sacramento
  • A Jewish man walking in a Sacramento County park was attacked with a stun gun by a man who said he supported Palestine, county sheriff's officials said Thursday. The attack is being investigated as a hate crime, said sheriff's spokesman Sgt. James Lewis. Erech Olsen, 23, was out walking his dog at about 7:30 p.m. Tuesday on Northrop Avenue, north of Swanston Park, when he noticed he was being followed by a man wearing a headdress, Lewis said.

Olsen, who was wearing a yarmulke, or skullcap, worn by Jewish men, said he stopped walking and asked the man what he wanted. "Do you support Israel?" Olsen quoted the man as asking. Olsen said he did. The man replied that he supported Palestine and pulled out an electric stun gun, Olsen said. The two men struggled over the weapon, which Olsen said he threw to the ground and broke with his foot. A second man joined the first in beating Olsen, yelling statements about innocent Palestinian children being killed. The confrontation was broken up by a resident. Olsen suffered bruises and a sprained elbow in the attack.

The two men were described by Olsen and the intervening resident as being African American. Olsen said the man who first confronted him was wearing a red-checkered headdress similar to those worn by Palestinians. The resident said the headdress was more like a bandanna.
We'll see if this spreads in the next few days. This time it was a glorified mugging...
My guess -- and it's just a guess -- is that it won't. By and large, the unavoidable "muslim rage" seems fairly easy for the outraged to control when the local governments aren't implicitly or explicitly supportive of it.
Posted by Joel Rosenberg 4/12/2002 2:33:23 PM
And my guess is that you're right. There are probably lots of mullahs in this country who'd like to get a little something going, but they know they don't have the power, and if they act prematurely they'll never get it.

    India-Pakistan
    PPP to boycott referendum
  • Senior Vice Chairman of Pakistan People's Party, Makhdoom Amin Faheem has said that the PPP will boycott the presidential referendum in line with the decision taken by the Alliance for the Restoration of Democracy (ARD). In an interview with PPI here on Thursday, the PPP leader said there was no constitutional, legal or moral justification for referendum. He said the PPP would actively take part in anti-referendum rallies to be staged by the ARD.

Millat Party is on board for Perv
  • The Millat Party on Thursday supported the government's decision to exclude those elements from politics who had looted the country and deceived masses. The party secretary-general, Mohammad Ali Durrani, speaking at a media conference, said all religious and patriotic parties should join hands to make presidential referendum a success. When asked whether the use of state machinery for the referendum campaign was constitutional and democratic, he said he was not aware that the government machinery had been mobilized for the purpose. In response to a question, he said the referendum was necessary to ensure President Gen Pervez Musharraf's stay in office to continue reforms he had brought about in various sectors. It will also pave the way for restoration of democracy and help end the politics of loot and plunder.

    International
    Chavez out in Venezuela
  • A Venezuelan general said on Thursday that President Hugo Chavez's government had "abandoned its functions" and the country was under the control of the armed forces. National Guard Gen. Alberto Camacho Kairuz made the announcement on local television after senior military officers blamed the president for violence during a huge anti-Chavez protest march in which at least 10 people were killed. "All of the country is under the control of the national armed forces," Camacho said. Camacho, accompanied by other officers, said he did not know exactly where Chavez was, but he made a public call for a group of armored cars around the Miraflores presidential palace to withdraw.
G'bye, Hugo. Give our regards to Fidel, if you make it out alive. At least this'll have a good effect on oil prices, even if not on Hugo's resume.

  • U.S. oil prices fell heavily for the second straight day on Friday as Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez' resignation eased disruptions at the key U.S. supplier and brightened drivers' hopes for cheaper gasoline at the pump this summer. May crude on the New York Mercantile Exchange plunged $1.52 to $23.47 a barrel, the lowest price in five weeks and 18 percent down from recent six-month highs struck as concern mounted over oil supply in both Latin America and the Middle East.
Guess what's gonna happen when they start hanging the princes?

  • Mr Chavez, who resigned after a three-day general strike in protest against his policies ended in violence, has issued a plea to be allowed to go into exile in Cuba. But the army has rejected this, saying the ex-president must be brought to account for the deaths of at least 13 people during protests on Thursday night.
Where else would he go? He tried hard to bring Cuba to Venezuela...

    Middle East
    Islamic Jihad thug in custody
  • Tabaat Ozmi Suleiman Mardawi is a senior operative in the Islamic Jihad. He was imprisoned by Israel between 1994-8, where he joined the Islamic Jihad. After his release, he rose to the leadership of Islamic Jihad. In November 1998, he was detained by the Palestinian Preventative Security Services and "held" until his release in May 2000. With the outbreak of the current round of Palestinian violence in October 2000, Mardawi renewed his ties with Islamic Jihad operatives, working with senior Islamic Jihad operative Iyad Hardan, developing ties with weaponry dealers.
Good boy to have off the streets.

PA copper's house chock full of weaponry
  • In an IDF raid on a house in Mission neighborhood of Ramallah, a loaded Galil assault rifle and pistol were discovered, as well as ammunition, night vision equipment and other weaponry. In a later investigation, it was found that the house belonged to Razi Jabali, a commander in the Palestinian police force in Judea and Samaria. Two armed Palestinians found in the vicinity of the house were arrested. The weaponry was confiscated by IDF soldiers.
Well, obviously the rocket launcher and the howitzer were for use in the course of his police duties...

Jerusalem boomer kills six, fifty wounded
  • A woman suicide bomber blew herself up near Jerusalem's Mahane Yehuda open-air market. There are at least six dead, and over 50 wounded, eight critically and 11 seriously, in the wake of the blast, according to Magen David Adom officials. The terrorist apparently tried to get on a bus in the vicinity of the market area, which was packed with pre-Sabbath shoppers. She stood close to a parking lot and then detonated the charge she was wearing outside of the vehicle, according to Jerusalem police chief Mickey Levy. There are a number of bodies strewn in the street and dozens of the wounded have been transferred to local hospitals. Police have closed off the area as sappers check for other terrorists or explosives.
FoxNews General Geraldo Rivera The Palestinianist was on the terriblevision this morning discussing how this is a police problem instead of a military problem. He pointed out, as I have lots of times, that for every suicide bomber, for every other crazed killer, there's a support network. The Israelis should be whacking very hard at the network behind the killers; every time one explodes a half dozen to a dozen runners, controllers, co-members of the cell, and the clerics and/or political operatives associated should all either be rounded up and jugged for, oh, six or seven thousand years, or have "tragic accidents." Where His Excellency the General and I disagree is the utility of the military. Since the Palestinocops were, shall we say, useless, due to their off-duty habits of dispatching the boomers, bombers and crazed killers, that leaves the IDF to aid in getting to the infrastructure. Sad that they have to drive tanks through walls to get to the Bad Guys, but the premise is rightly that it's not worth expending the Good Guys to get to the thugs. There are only so many Good Guys in the world, but the supply of exploding fanatics appears to be unlimited.

    Attempted boomer nabbed
  • Army forces captured a suicide bomber in the northern West Bank overnight. The Palestinian, from the village of Labed, north of Tulkarm, was planning to carry out an attack within Israel, Palestinian sources said. The army did not comment, although Israeli sources confirmed the report. This is the second attempted attack from the area in the last 24-hours, since the army withdrew from the area several days ago.

Gunny kills border cop in shootout
  • A Palestinian gunman killed an Israeli and a Palestinian, and wounded four other Israelis and three Palestinians in a shooting spree at the Erez crossing point at the northern end of the Gaza Strip. St.-Sgt. David Smirnoff, 22, of Ashdod, a Border Police officer at the terminal, was critically wounded in the shooting. He was evacuated by helicopter to Beersheva's Soroka Hospital, where he died a short time later of his wounds. The wounded Israelis, two of them reportedly also border policemen, and Palestinians sustained moderate to light wounds, according to MDA sources.

The Palestinian, apparently posing as a worker at the terminal, opened fire from a Kalishnikov assault rifle he hid under his coat, and hurled at least one fragmentation grenade at Israelis and Palestinians in the vicinity. A Border Police duty-officer in charge shot and killed the assailant. He sustained minor wounds in the exchange of gunfire. Islamic Jihad took responsibility for the attack, Palestinian sources in Gaza told Israel Radio.

    PA intelligence chief implicated
  • Information gleaned from terrorists who were arrested and documents confiscated by the IDF during Operation Defensive Shield indicate that Palestinian Authority West Bank General Intelligence chief Tawfik Tirawi assisted in recruiting, arming, and dispatching terrorists to perpetrate attacks in Israel. Lists of names of potential suicide bombers that Israel handed over to Tirawi, demanding they be arrested by the PA, were instead used by Tirawi to warn the terrorists to evade arrest. A senior Fatah operative captured by soldiers in the Jenin refugee camp, Abed al-Karim Awiss, admitted during questioning that Tirawi recently gave him the names of 10 potential suicide bombers Israel had asked him to arrest.
Now, doesn't that come as a surprise?... Oh. It doesn't.

PA Biggy was Islamic Jihad stooge
  • Jamal Sawitat, the deputy head of the PA's Preventive Security Service in Jenin, constantly updated the head of Islamic Jihad in the area regarding names supplied by Israel of wanted terrorists in order to warn them of pending arrest. Seized documents reveal that Islamic Jihad funded Fatah operations and terrorist activities, and that all the terrorist organizations worked hand in hand to perpetrate attacks against Israelis. Islamic Jihad Secretary Dr. Ramadan Shallah, who resides in Damascus, planned terrorist activities by cell members in the territories, and sent large amounts of money to fund the operations.

    Hamas controller rounded up
  • IDF yesterday revealed that during a raid on West Bank Preventive Security Service chief Jibril Rajoub's headquarters in Beitunya, soldiers arrested Salim Mahmoud Salim Hajah, a senior Hamas operative responsible for numerous shooting attacks in which scores of Israelis were killed. According to the army, Hajah coordinated activities between Hamas cells in the Ramallah area and Samaria, and was in charge of a bomb factory in Nablus. He was responsible for many suicide attacks in Israel, including the Sbarro pizzeria suicide bombing in Jerusalem, and was involved in the bombing at the Dolphinarium in Tel Aviv.

Another boomer belt in an ambo
  • The Israeli police said today that they had found a belt with explosives in a Palestinian ambulance during a check at a roadblock inside the West Bank. The ambulance was headed toward Israel with the body of a Palestinian man, the police said, and they found the device alongside him. It was the second time in two weeks that Israel has reported finding explosives in an ambulance.
Starting to get tiresome, isn't it?

Powell to tell Yasser the jig's up
  • A senior administration official told The Associated Press that Powell intends to warn Palestinian Authority Chairman Yasser Arafat the United States is prepared to sever ties with him unless he renounces terrorism. "The message is: This is it. Last chance," said the official, who cautioned that Powell and US President George W. Bush will not finalize the message for Arafat until the meeting draws closer. Powell landed late last night, and is scheduled to meet this morning with Sharon, and then later separately with Defense Minister Binyamin Ben-Eliezer, Foreign Minister Shimon Peres, and President Moshe Katsav. A joint Powell-Sharon press conference is slated after the two men meet.
Yeah, yeah. "This is the last time I'm tellin' you... This is really it... I'm warning you, you're gonna get it..." The last "last warning" should have been the last.

  • Palestinian Information Minister Yasser Abed Rabbo said U.S. officials informed the Palestinians the meeting was being postponed, possibly to Sunday. Word of the postponement came several hours after a Palestinian woman blew herself up in a crowded outdoor market in Jerusalem, killing six shoppers and wounding dozens. A militia linked to Arafat's Fatah movement claimed responsibility.
Wonder if the meeting will actually take place? I'd expect another boomer tomorrow... Yasser doesn't want to hear the harsh words he knows are coming, and Powell probably doesn't really want to waste his time.

    Kofi wants to send troops
  • U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan on Friday called for sending an armed international force to Palestinian areas to stop the spiraling violence. Annan, who was in Geneva, told the U.N. Human Rights Commission the United Nations could not stand back from what was happening in the Middle East. "The situation is so dangerous and the humanitarian and human rights situation so appalling that I think the proposition that a force should be sent in there ... can no longer be deferred," Annan told a news conference. "It is urgent. It is imperative."

"I am talking about a force that will help create a secure environment, to allow for assistance, to allow us to be able to end the killing and give us time for negotiations and diplomacy," he said at a second news conference later in the day. Claiming it wants to root out terrorists, Israel has defied demands by the United Nations, the United States and much of the rest of the world that it withdraw its forces from the West Bank. Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon has said his forces would not pull back until Palestinian militias are crushed.
Worst idea in years, with the single exception of sending in US troops to do the same thing. They can send "peacekeepers" in one of two manners: they can be unarmed schlepps riding around in blue APCs and occasionally getting slapped around by local hard boys; or they can come in armed and dangerous, which will amount to an invasion of Israel. They can either coerce an agreement out of the Israelis, which means they've got to be honest brokers or get shot up; or they can invade, which the US would veto in the Security Council. Invade past the veto and the UN's broken up - we'll be forced to withdraw.

Kofi may actually have the honest broker thing in mind, keeping the two sides apart while Yasser tells some more lies and makes some more promises he has no intention of keeping. While they're doing that, the boomers are going to be trying to swarm Israel and it's only a matter of time before the Philistine hard boys start popping peacekeepers for fun, especially if they're infidels. And if they aren't infidels, the peacekeepers'll be standing around whistling and playing craps and ignoring the swarms, to pick up their arms when the Israelis look like they may retaliate. And that won't be honest brokerage. The alternative is a comprimise with mixed infidels and believers, which will combine all the worst elements of both approaches and could end up with the peacekeepers shooting it out with each other. Pfui.

    Terror Networks
Paks set trial for four crazed killers
  • The Sindh government has notified jail trial of four workers of the banned Sipah-i-Sahaba Pakistan and Tehrik-i-Jafferia Pakistan, allegedly involved in cases of sectarian killings in different parts of the city. One of the SSP workers, Dilawar alias Dildar, is facing trial in six murder cases, which include one pertaining to the killing of a former deputy superintendent of police and his young son. Another SSP worker, Abdur Rashid alias Andha, is co-accused with Dilawar in two murder cases.
"Dildar"? Who the hell ever heard of a crazed killer named Dildar? Sounds like a character out of the worst porno-science fiction movie ever made.

    Zubaydah still hasn't sung
  • Abu Zubaydah, a top planner and recruiter for Osama bin Laden's al-Qaida network, is a ``big fish'' in the organization, Rumsfeld said in a Fox TV interview. Zubaydah is under U.S. control at an undisclosed location, recovering from bullet wounds suffered during his capture last month in Pakistan. Rumsfeld said Zubaydah's wounds were severe and became infected, but his survival no longer seems in doubt. Zubaydah is the third- or four-ranking leader in al-Qaida and was deeply involved in planning terrorist attacks, Rumsfeld said. At one point he called Zubaydah a ``fountain of information,'' but later revised his characterization to ``fountain of knowledge'' to indicate that he knows a lot but has not revealed much.
You're not giving him the right kind of dope...
