[DAWN] The United Nations ...an idea whose time has gone... is set to end travel ban exemptions for 13 Taliban ...Arabic for students... officials, pending any deal by Security Council members on a possible extension, diplomats told AFP.
Under a 2011 UN Security Council resolution, 135 Taliban officials are subject to sanctions that include asset freezes and travel bans.
But 13 of them were granted exemptions from the travel ban to allow them to meet officials from other countries abroad.
In June, the 15-member UN Security Council’s Afghanistan Sanctions Committee removed two Taliban education ministers from the exemption list over the regime’s curtailment of women’s rights.
At the same time, they renewed the exemption for the others until August 19, plus a further month if no member objected.
Ireland objected this week, according to diplomatic sources.
China and Russia have called for an extension, while the United States has sought a reduced list of the officials allowed to travel and the destinations they can travel to.
The latest proposal on the table would allow just six officials to travel for diplomatic reasons, diplomatic sources told AFP.
If no member of the Council objects by Monday afternoon, it will come into force for three months.

[LIBYAREVIEW] The Libyan police arrested the Chairman of Automobile and Touring Club of Libya (ATCL) and the Executive Director of the Civil Society Commission on charges of alleged corruption.
The Internal Security Agency (ISA) said in a statement that, the ATCL Chairman abused his authority, by illegally imposing taxes on cars that cross the Libyan ports. The ISA also accused him of embezzling the tax money.
Moreover, the ISA added that the Executive Director of the Civil Society Commission helped the ATCL Chairman by issuing decisions and laws related to the inventory of the properties of the Club, however it was frozen. The police also accused him of abusing his power.
The two defendants were referred to the Public Prosecution office to complete the legal procedures against them. The prosecution will either decide to release the accused or to bring them before a court.
Libyan Attorney General, al-Siddiq al-Sour, ordered the detention of five hospital directors, seven officials of the Ministry of Health in the outgoing Government of National Unity (GNU), and directors of two companies. The arrest was ordered on the basis of corruption and embezzlement charges, which the Public Prosecution office conducted investigations months ago into its circumstances.
According to a statement by the Attorney General’s Office on Facebook, the Attorney General conducted investigations against a number of directors of medical institutions, and those in charge of some departments concerned with providing medical services. They were authorised to manage the implementation tools contracted to supply some medical equipment and supplies, for the benefit of the administration.

An ex-attorney general of Mexico has been arrested by prosecutors in connection with the 2014 disappearance of 43 students in the Mexican state of Guerrero, who are believed to have been murdered by the cartel.
A further 83 arrest warrants - for 33 local police officers, 11 state police, 20 army soldier officers and 14 gang members - have also been issued.
The mass kidnapping happened on September 26 2014, when 43 male teaching students from the rural village of Ayotzinapa were detained by corrupt police, from Iguala, on their way to a protest before being handed over to the Guerreros United Cartel.

Jesus Murillo Karam served as the attorney general from 2012 to 2015 under former President Enrique Pena Nieto.
It is the first time in recent history that a former attorney general has been arrested and marks one of the biggest mass arrests by civilian prosecutors of Mexican army soldiers.
The office of the current attorney general, Alejandro Gertz Manero, said Murillo Karam was charged with torture, official misconduct and forced disappearance.
In 2020, Gertz Manero said Murillo Karam had been involved in the crime by 'orchestrating a massive media trick' and leading a 'generalized cover-up' of the case.
His arrest comes a day after a commission set up to determine what had happened said the army were at least partially responsible in the case.

Tobias Andersson, who serves as a member of the Swedish parliament and as legal policy spokesman for the Sweden Democrats, commented on a picture of a Stockholm subway train decorated with the blue flowers of his party on Tuesday.
“Welcome to the repatriation train. You hold a one-way ticket. Next stop, Kabul!” Andersson wrote.
The tweet was criticised by a number of prominent figures in Sweden, including Centre Party leader Annie Lööf, who wrote: “This is so undignified and racist. I find it so hard to understand how decent bourgeois liberal colleagues want to go to the polls with this party and give them influence.”
Climate Minister Annika Strandhäll, a member of the ruling Social Democrats, also commented on the tweet, saying: “This is SD’s justice policy spokesperson. He can become Minister of Justice if Ulf and Jimmie win the election,” referring to centre-right Moderate Party leader Ulf Kristersson and SD leader Jimmie Åkesson.
According to a report from broadcaster SVT, however, the attention given to the tweet helped it to go viral on Swedish social media, particularly on Twitter where the term “Kabul” was trending earlier this week, while Tobias Andersson trended on Google.
The message from Andersson comes after party leader Åkesson and migration policy spokesman Ludvig Aspling penned an opinion article for the newspaper Aftonbladet earlier in the year that called or the government to start repatriating migrants who failed to integrate into Swedish society or were long-term unemployed.
“Remigration is not a miracle solution, but the failures of recent decades show that it must be an option – a solution for all those who live in long-term exclusion,” the pair said. “Incentive structures and the welfare system must be reformed, so that people in exclusion cannot get caught up in welfare dependency, but are either forced into society or encouraged to remigrate.”
Swedish voters are set to go to the ballot box on the 11th of September and recent polling shows that a possible centre-right coalition involving the Moderates, the Sweden Democrats, the Christian Democrats, and the Liberals could reach nearly 50 per cent of the vote, while the ruling Social Democrats remain in the low thirites.

[NPASYRIA] Management of northeast Syria camps said on Saturday that Roj and Hawl camps housing ISIS families pose threats to Syria and the world.
In a statement, the management of Roj camp noted to the recent Ottoman Turkish escalation that could lead to further breaks from the two camps.
The statement indicated that as Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) are preoccupied with the Ottoman Turkish escalation; ISIS may exploit the current situation to reorganize itself again.
