[NYP] He’s an MS-13 gangster and illegal immigrant accused of murdering a rival on a subway platform ‐ but you wouldn’t even recognize him on the street if the NYPD had its way.
Cops bent over backward Tuesday to shield alleged killer Ramiro Gutierrez from public scrutiny after his arrest for Sunday’s broad-daylight slaying in Queens ‐ going so far as to feed reporters bogus information about his whereabouts and claim ignorance on his illegal status hours before President Trump’s State of the Union Address renewing his request for a border wall.
Gutierrez, 26, has been in custody since Monday for the execution-style killing of Abel Mosso, 20, in front of horrified straphangers.
But cops waited until 4 a.m. Tuesday to announce that he had been formally charged.
Then they called reporters Tuesday afternoon to say that he would be walked out of the 115th Precinct station house at 4 p.m. ‐ only to sneak him out a back door by 2 p.m. en route to a courthouse in Queens.
It would have been the public’s first chance to get a good look at the accused killer ‐ had The Post not already put him on the front page Tuesday thanks to law enforcement sources.
Gutierrez shot Mosso "multiple times in the face" following a scuffle over a gun that spilled from a No. 7 train onto the 90th Street station platform in a "gang-related" incident, according to NYPD Chief of Detectives Dermot Shea.

It is very likely the police were under strict orders. Perhaps one or two will come forward and provide further details of those orders.
[Bloomberg] It's telling that Maduro did not give the order this past weekend to disperse crowds of protesters with violence. It suggests that he knows that most of his army would not follow it. Eli Lake is an ACTUAL Journalist.

Sounds like a lot of neocon warmongering to me. Why do we get to decide what happens in Venezuela? What business is it of ours? I'm no fan of socialism, but Jesus. This is just more "regime change" from the same geniuses that brought us the Iraq war.

Herb i suppose regime change in V might prevent more attempts to invade the US by illegal migrants

BP - that would be strategic thinking, which is less valuable than (im)moral preening

How would you like to be one of the 400 Guys Putin just sent as a varangian guard for Maduro? And what about the thousands of Cuban intel and security’ advisers. Hard to see this end bloodlessly.

I wouldn't normally be in favor of US intervention but if Maduro is being propped up by Russians and Cubans...if it gets to the point where Russians and Cubans are shooting Venezuelans...that would be all the justification Trump would need. Somehow I think it would all be over in 24 hours.

The Russians and Cubans would deserve everything they got from that kind of a deal.

[Aljazeera] Good news on the economic front is always welcome. For US President Donald Trump, it arrived just in the nick of time.
A week ago and a half ago, some hardline conservatives were lambasting the president for agreeing to reopen the government without winning a single concession from congressional Democrats on funding for a border wall and border security.
One conservative pundit even called Trump a "wimp".
Adding injury to the insult, the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office reported at the start of last week that the partial government shutdown - the longest in US history - took a $11bn bite out of the economy, $3bn of which is unlikely to be recovered.
But before the week was out, the fallout over the shutdown had been eclipsed by economic headlines that played in Trump's favour.
On Wednesday, Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell signalled that the US central bank might hold interest rates steady for some time - a reversal from the Fed's position in December and something Trump has long agitated for.
On Thursday, the Dow Jones Industrial Average and the S&P 500 closed out the month with their strongest January gains in 30 years, a sharp turnaround from the end of 2018 when markets were roiled by concerns over rising interest rates, US-China trade tensions and slowing global growth.
[Express] The survey of 1,000 voters in each country, found that 46 percent of French and 47 percent of Germans believe their country’s values conflict with Islam. While, almost one in two people in France and Germany said they would "mind a lot" or "mind a little" if one of their close relatives were to marry a Muslim.
But a small number of people in either Germany (seven percent) or France (five percent) said they were "very familiar" with the teachings of the second-largest religion in the world, Islam, according to the poll on attitudes towards religion, carried out by YouGov.
And just 10 percent of French people and just eight percent of Germans, lower than the 13 percent of Britons, said they viewed the religion favourably.
This was in comparison to the 53 per cent of people in Germany who had an unfavourable opinion, and the 49 per cent of people in neighbouring France.
While only 20 percent of Germans and 22 percent of French people questioned said Islam was "generally compatible".
The rest have learned the value of discretion - if Muslims won't butcher you in the middle of a street for "offending Islam", a local magistrate will put you in jail for "hate speech"?
Satire of course.
[Babylon Bee] WASHINGTON, D.C.‐Notorious serial killer and champion of women's rights Kermit Gosnell is set to attend Trump's State of the Union address this evening as Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi's special guest, sources confirmed Tuesday.
Gosnell is serving life in prison but was let out at Pelosi's request to attend the event. The House Speaker stated she wanted a guest who could stand for reproductive healthcare and women's rights during Trump's speech. She called the move a "powerful statement" against those who would infringe on a woman's right to choose.
"Bringing this brave man along to the State of the Union sends a powerful message to the anti-choice bigots," Pelosi said in a press conference. "When state law forbade him from aborting late-term infants, he did so anyway. He is a strong, brave freedom fighter who was simply ahead of his time."
"We Democrats are just now catching up to him when it comes to late-term and post-birth abortion policies," she added.
Gosnell is to be seated next to Planned Parenthood's president, Leana Wen.
[American Thinker] Last month, House speaker Nancy Pelosi told reporters that President Trump had to re-open the government before Democrats would engage in any negotiations over border security. Subsequently, President Trump announced a three-week temporary end to the partial government shutdown that did not include funding for a border wall. In doing so, he put country over politics and put the onus on the Democrats to negotiate in good faith. Despite the president's good-faith effort to reach across the political aisle, congressional Democrats failed miserably, acted in bad faith, and seriously undermined their credibility.
When President Trump re-opened the government, Democrats had the opportunity to work in a bi-partisan manner so as to adequately fund (or at least negotiate) the president's border wall and border security. Rather than doing so, "Senate Democrats introduced legislation on Monday to prevent President Trump from using military and disaster relief funds to construct the U.S.-Mexico border wall should he declare a national emergency," according to The Hill.
In other words, not only did congressional Democrats fail to negotiate funding for the border (and border security), as Pelosi indicated, but they also blatantly (albeit poorly) attempted to circumvent the president's power under the National Emergency Act. For example, Section 2808 "permits the Secretary of Defense to undertake military construction projects, and to authorize the Secretaries of the military departments to undertake military construction projects[.] ... [S]uch projects may be taken only within the total amount of funds that have been appropriated for military construction." Moreover, in an L.A. Times article, Elizabeth Goitein, a scholar at the Brennan Center at NYU, stated:

Somehow, during the shutdown, the federal government managed to add a net 1000 employees. Evidently the people in charge of hiring were deemed 'essential'.

[NationalReview] By mid 1793‐4, the radical Jacobins had successfully completed their hijacking of the French Revolution.
They openly enacted agendas that might have seemed impossible in the heady days of 1787. Long gone were the pretenses of the original idealism when the revolution abolished feudalism, issued the Declaration of the Rights of Man, and wrestled with turning the Ancien Régime of Louis XVI into some sort of constitutional or parliamentary monarchy analogous to what had emerged in Great Britain.
Soon executing the clerisy en masse was logically followed by Jacobins guillotining thousands of surviving aristocrats and fellow revolutionaries for supposed counterrevolutionary sympathies.
Most of the leaders of the Jacobins were themselves finally guillotined, largely because their ascendant revolutionary zeal could end only in a sort of cannibalism ‐ given that no revolutionary could possibly meet their accelerating purist demands. Mao’s Cultural Revolution was similar, though he slaughtered millions, not thousands.
In less melodramatic terms, we are watching a rare revolutionary phase in American politics as leftists have devoured Democrats. Progressives ate liberals. And progressives are now being devoured by socialists, and soon no doubt socialists will be eaten by hard leftists, Communists, anarchists, and nihilists. In such revolutionary logic, perhaps only Antifa will emerge as pure.
The result is that the 2020 election will offer the starkest choices in the past 50 years, far eclipsing the radical contrasts of 1972. The current parade of would-be Democratic presidential hopefuls is already apologizing for their past sins of Democratic centrism, in fear of being politically guillotined.
[National Review] Ben Sasse’s Born-Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act is a necessary and currently nonexistent safeguard for newborns. I believe Beatrix Potter would have approved.
On Monday evening, Senator Ben Sasse (R., Neb.) called for unanimous consent to his Born-Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act, which would require that infants delivered alive during attempted abortion procedures be given appropriate medical care.
Senator Patty Murray (D., Wash.) objected to the bill on the floor on behalf of her Democratic colleagues, preventing the legislation from receiving unanimous consent. "We have laws against infanticide in this country," Murray said. "This is a gross misinterpretation of the actual language of the bill that is being asked to be considered, and therefore I object."
It is worth examining why Sasse’s legislation, which now has 42 Republican cosponsors, is neither redundant nor unnecessary. Most important, there is no existing federal law that prohibits the denial of medical care to infants born alive in the context of abortion, which is what this bill would do.
In 2002, the Born-Alive Infants Protection Act (BAIPA) passed Congress by unanimous consent and was signed into law by President George W. Bush, establishing that the terms "person," "human being," "child," and "individual" in federal law include every infant born alive, even after an abortion. But that’s all it did ‐ it instituted no penalties for physicians who neglected to care for such infants.
