Salvini: ‘We Need to Help Italians Have More Children, Not Bring in modern-day Slaves from Africa
[Breitbartt] Italy’s Matteo Salvini infuriated the EU’s most senior foreign minister by declaring that Italy needs more children, not more Africans "to replace the children we’re not having".

Speaking at a conference on the European migrant crisis in Vienna, the dynamic League (Lega) leader, who became Italy’s deputy prime minister and minister of the interior after anti-establishment populists triumphed at the polls in the recent elections, said he disagreed with EU politicians "[who] say that we need immigration because the population of Europe is getting older".

"I have a completely different viewpoint," he said. "I believe that I’m in government in order to see that our young people have the number of children that they used to a few years ago, and not to transplant the best of Africa’s youth to Europe."

Salvini’s remarks flustered nearby Jean Asselborn, who muttered "blah, blah, blah" while the Italian was speaking.

The 69-year-old Luxembourger, who is the EU’s longest-serving foreign minister ‐ having been in post since 2004 ‐ has previously complained that anti-mass migration parties which want to "protect Christianity" and refuse to "open the door" to Arabic-speaking Muslim migrants will "destroy Europe" with their strong border policies.

Salvini merely used the opportunity to goad the EU loyalist, however, adding: "Maybe in Luxembourg they need to do this, but in Italy we need to help people have more children, rather than bring in modern-day slaves [from Africa] to replace the children we’re not having."

WSJ Editorial Board: The #MeToo Kavanaugh Ambush
[WSJ] The woman accusing Brett Kavanaugh of a drunken assault when both were teenagers has now come forward publicly, but that should not deter Republicans from proceeding with their current confirmation-vote schedule. There is no way to confirm her story after 35 years, and to let it stop Mr. Kavanaugh’s confirmation would ratify what has all the earmarks of a calculated political ambush.

This is not to say Christine Blasey Ford isn’t sincere in what she remembers. In an interview published in the Washington Post on Sunday, Ms. Ford offered a few more details of the story she told anonymously starting in July. She says she was 15 when Mr. Kavanaugh, who would have been 17, and a male friend pushed her into a bedroom at a drinking party, held her down, and pawed her until the male friend jumped on them both and she escaped to a bathroom until the two boys left the room.

Mr. Kavanaugh denies all this "categorically and unequivocally," and there is simply no way to prove it. The only witness to the event is Mr. Kavanaugh’s high school male friend, Mark Judge, who also says he recalls no such event. Ms. Ford concedes she told no one about it‐not even a high school girl friend or family member‐until 2012 when she told the story as part of couples therapy with her husband.

Judge Kavanaugh's Mother, a Judge, Presided Over a Foreclose Case Involving Christine Blasey Ford's Parents
[IOTW] This is the work of Extortion17 and Larry Beech‏ with the hat tip going to Hot Salsa.

This is an interesting tidbit. It could mean absolutely nothing, and certainly isn’t proof of reprisal, but I don’t think it should be dismissed out-of-hand. Is it simply a coincidence?

This Ford lady is most likely a hard lefty. She most likely abhors Kavanaugh’s politics. Maybe it didn’t take much to get her to participate in a smear campaign.

Update at 1:40 p.m. EDT: Courtesy of Vast Right Wing Conspiracy, Powerline’s commentary on the situation can be read here.

#1  Reader's comments somewhere on the internets:

"Martha G. Kavanaugh, the mother of Brett Kavanaugh was a Maryland district judge in 1996. In an amazing coincidence, Martha Kavanaugh was the judge in a foreclosure case in which Christine Blasey-Ford’s parents were the defendants. Now it all becomes clear. Blasey-Ford is going after Brett Kavanaugh, not because of what he did in high school. Instead, Christine Blasey-Ford is going after Brett Kavanaugh out of spite and revenge for a case ruled on by Brett Kavanaugh mother. Martha Kavanaugh, Brett’s mother was Montgomery County Circuit Court judge from 1993 until she retired in 2001. During a 1996 foreclosure case, Martha Kavanaugh ruled against the parents of Christine Blasey-Ford in a foreclosure case. The foreclosure case against Paula K. Blasey and Ralph G. Blasey was opened on August 8, 1996. The case number is 156006V."

#1  Also: Judge Brett Kavanaugh is the son of a judge. His mother is former Maryland District Judge Martha Kavanaugh. Turns out that Judge Kavanaugh, (the senior), was the presiding judge in a home foreclosure case in which she ruled against Christine Blasey-Ford's parents!

What an incredible coincidence.

Cartel Hitmen Dressed as Mariachis Shoot Bystanders in Mexico City Tourist Plaza
[Breitbart TX] Three cartel hitmen dressed as mariachis sprayed gunfire in one of Mexico City’s most popular plazas. Casualty reports range from three to five victims killed ‐ as many as seven others were injured.

The attack took place in Mexico City’s Plaza Garibaldi, an area visited primarily by tourists looking for mariachi performers. According to preliminary information released by Mexican authorities, three gunmen dressed as mariachis arrived at the Plaza riding on motorcycles. They began firing directly into the crowd.

Soon after the attack, law enforcement investigators collected approximately 50 shell casings ejected from the weapons the gunmen used while firing into the crowd. Authorities have not revealed how many of the shooting victims were innocent bystanders and how many were intended targets.

Law enforcement sources in Mexico City have revealed to Breitbart Texas that the attack is tied to a turf war between the dominant cartel called "La Union de Tepito" currently led by David "El Pistache" Garcia Ramirez and a splinter of the cartel led by Sergio "El Tortas" Flores Concha who labeled themselves as the "Anti-Union".

Sen. Flake Steps Into McCain's Shoes As Republican Saboteur, Forever Looking Out For … Democrats
[Mercer] Sen. Jeff Flake of Arizona has stepped into the role of John McCain as Republican scold and saboteur, forever looking out for the interests of ... the Democrats, not to mention his own legacy as swamp creature.

And now, the flake from Arizona is helping to sabotage the nomination to the Supreme Court of Brett Kavanaugh. After all, when it comes to white males, there is no statute of limitation on their crimes and evil. They must be stopped. No evidence needed. Due process be damned.

MORE at Mediate.

AND, if you miss John McCain, fear not. Sens. Susan Collins (R-Maine) & Lisa Murkowski (R-Alaska) will pick up the slack. Flake, aforementioned, too. Recall how they & the late Johnny defeated legislation to scrap the Affordable Care Act?

At least 23 dead in weekend of ethnic violence in Ethiopia
[News24] Ethnic violence in Ethiopia left 23 people dead at the weekend, state media reported on Monday, as protests against the killings gripped the capital Addis Ababa where an angry crowd gathered in the city centre.

The state-owned Ethiopia News Agency (ENA) said an organised mob carried out a spree of murder and looting in and around Burayu town, leaving 23 people dead and 886 displaced, citing Oromia regional police commissioner Alemayehu Ejigu.

ENA reported that over 70 people had been arrested.

On Twitter, Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed's chief of staff, Fitsum Arega, said the leader "strongly condemns the killings and acts of violence against innocent citizens."

"These cowardly attacks represent a grave concern to the unity and solidarity of our people and will be met with an appropriate response," he said, without providing a toll.

Zero hour approaches northern Latakia as Syrian Army prepares to kickoff long-awaited offensive
[AlMasdar] (7:30 P.M.) ‐ The Syrian Arab Army (SAA) is set to launch their long-awaited offensive in northern Latakia in the next few days, a military source told al-Masdar News this evening.

According to the military source, the Syrian Arab Army’s 4th Division and Elite Republican Guard have been given the green light to begin this offensive in Latakia’s Jabal al-Akrad and Jabal Turkmen regions.

The source said the offensive will be launched from at least three axes, with the primary focus being the key town of Kabbani, which overlooks the northern part of the al-Ghaab Plain.

Also participating in this upcoming offensive will be the National Defense Forces (NDF), the Syrian Social Nationalist Party (SSNP), and the Local Defense Forces (LDF).

The Syrian Army and their allies will be facing off against a large number of jihadist rebels from groups like Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham
and the Turkestan Islamic Party (TIP).

In addition to these groups, the Syrian Army may come across the Ottoman Turkish military, as they currently have a non-agreed upon observation post along the northern slope of Jabal al-Akrad.

Austria: 6 deportees set fire to cell, leave farewell note
[ABC] Austrian police say six men have been hospitalized with serious injuries after setting alight the mattresses and bedding of the deportation cell in which they were being held.

Vienna police said Saturday that five Afghans and an Iranian man tried to block the cell door with a locker and left a joint farewell note expressing anguish about their imminent deportations.

Officers were able to force open the cell and some 70 firefighters tackled the blaze late Friday.

Police say the men, ranging in age from 18 to 31, are in intensive care. Fourteen other people, including at least three police officers, were treated at the scene for smoke inhalation.

Austria's government, which includes the far-right Freedom Party, has pledged to step up immigration deportations since coming to power last year.

Deir Ezzor: US and French SF photographed, ISIS claims foiled SDF offensive, Syrian army and ISIs fight in the east
US, French special forces take part in SDF’s east Deir Ezzor offensive (photos)

[AlMasdar] (12:00 P.M.) – The U.S. and French special forces were recently photographed taking part in the Syrian Democratic Forces’ ongoing offensive in east Deir Ezzor.

The Coalition forces are reportedly providing the SDF with logistical and artillery support, as the latter attempts to capture the last areas occupied by the Islamic State (ISIS) in the Euphrates River Valley.

ISIS says they foiled new SDF offensive in southeast Deir Ezzor

[AlMasdar] (3:15 P.M.) – The Islamic State (ISIS) said on Saturday that their terrorist combatants foiled another offensive that was launched by the US-backed Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) in the southeastern countryside of Deir Ezzor.

The Islamic State managed to foil the offensive after the Syrian Democratic Forces reportedly advanced into the key town of Baghouz Fouqani near the Iraqi border.

The terrorist group released photos of their fighters foiling the assault, along with images of several SDF personnel killed around Baghouz Fouqani.

ISIS has now repelled two big attacks by the Syrian Democratic Forces inside the Euphrates River Valley in the past ten days.

Syrian Army’s strikes kill dozens of ISIS militants in eastern Syria

[AlMasdar] (3:30 P.M.) – The Syrian forces continue military operations against the Islamic State east of Deir Ezzor province, killing scores of militants and destroying their vehicles.

Army units used heavy missile and artillery shelling against the terror group’s jihadists stationed in the desert west of al-Mayadeen city.

The strikes destroyed and damaged several technical vehicles used by the ultraconservative group, and killed scores of militants.

ISIS launches massive counter-offensive against Syrian Army in west Deir Ezzor

[AlMasdar] (7:20 P.M.) – The Islamic State (ISIS) has launched a massive counter-offensive in western Deir Ezzor, today, after spending the last few days on the defensive.

ISIS began their assault by storming all of the areas the Syrian Arab Army recently captured during their large-scale offensive early in the week.

According to a military source in Damascus, the Syrian Arab Army was forced to withdraw from several of the recently liberated areas in western Deir Ezzor after the Islamic State broke through their lines this afternoon.

The source said that more than 10 Syrian Army soldiers were killed during the Islamic State’s wide-scale assault, including one officer.

The Islamic State is now working to advance their positions in the Badiya Al-Sham region in a bid to reach the western outskirts of Al-Mayadeen.

ISIS kills several Syrian Army soldiers as they rapidly advance in west Deir Ezzor

[AlMasdar] (10:40 P.M.) – The Islamic State (ISIS) launched a large-scale counter-offensive in the western countryside of Deir Ezzor, today, targeting the areas that were recently liberated by the Syrian Arab Army (SAA).

ISIS was able to overpower the Syrian Arab Army troops at the northeastern and southeastern axes of their Badiya Al-Sham pocket, forcing the latter to fall back towards the key city of Al-Mayadeen.

According to a military source in Damascus, the Syrian Arab Army suffered heavy casualties during the attack, while also losing most of the areas they recently liberated from the Islamic State terrorists.

The source said the original death toll was believed to be between 10-15; however, the death toll has since increased to over 25.

In response to this Islamic State offensive, the Russian and Syrian air forces have begun heavily bombarding the terrorist group’s positions around the Badiya Al-Sham region.

Meanwhile, the Syrian Army is attempting to regroup in order to stop the Islamic State from securing the areas they recaptured on Sunday.

Last Tuesday, the Syrian Arab Army launched a wide-scale operation to clear the Islamic State’s pocket along the east Homs axis.

Prior to the Islamic State’s counter-offensive, the Syrian Arab Army had managed to liberate a large chunk of territory that was occupied by the Islamic State near the T-2 Pumping Station.

Kerry On Trump: 'He Has The Maturity Of An Eight-Year-Old Boy'
[Hot Air] A few new books are coming out as Fall releases and I fully expect headlines like the one above to be frequent as the authors head out on book tours. Case in point: former Secretary of State John Kerry. Both President Trump and Secretary of State Mike Pompeo responded to Kerry’s admission of meeting with leaders of other countries and advising them to wait out Trump’s time in office. Needless to say, they rightfully called out Kerry for unprecedented behavior. So, Kerry has begun to personally attack President Trump in a schoolyard bully type of way.

Idlib-Hama offensive: YPG uninvolved, Syrian army intensifies attack, killing scores of rebels
Kurdish fighters not participating in Idlib offensive: YPG official

[AlMasdar] (2:50 P.M.) – A senior Kurdish official stated that YPG forces will not take part in the prospected offensive on Idlib province expected to launched soon.

“While the probability of a military campaign in the city of Idlib and its surroundings increases, some media outlets has been speaking about participation of our forces in this operation. This kind of allegation is mere speculation and is far from the truth”, the statement released by YPG press office read.

The statement confirmed that Kurdish forces’ main battle is to eradicate the Islamic State from eastern Syria.

“As the People’s Defense Units (YPG) and Women’s Defense Units (YPJ), we assure the public that our forces are continuing their hard struggle against the ISIS terrorist organization and are determined to root it out from northeastern Syria”, it added.

The statement also vowed to carry on the fight against the Turkish military and its proxies currently occupying Afrin region.

“We continue our legitimate and rightful struggle against the Turkish invasion army that declares its presence in Afrin as lawful and against the ISIS terrorist organization, supported by the invader Turkish state. Likewise, we confirm that there is no presence of our forces in Idlib”.

Syrian Army intensifies attack in Hama and Idlib as Turkish troops amass in northwest Syria

[AlMasdar] (3:30 P.M.) – The Syrian Arab Army (SAA) has intensified their assault in the Idlib and Hama governorates, today, in response to the large buildup of Turkish troops in northwest Syria.

According to a military source in the government stronghold of Mhardeh, the Syrian Arab Army and their allies from the National Defense Forces (NDF) struck jihadist defenses in the northern Hama towns of Al-Lataminah, Zakat, and Kafr Zita.

The Syrian Army then expanded their assault to the Idlib Governorate, where they would heavily target the towns around the jihadist stronghold of Khan Sheikhoun.

Following this assault, the Syrian Army fired several missiles towards the jihadist trenches that were dug around the towns of Taman’ah and Sukeek.

The Syrian Army is now heavily shelling Taman’ah and Sukeek in a bid to fracture the jihadist defenses in the area.

Syrian Army kills several jihadist rebels in southwest Idlib

[AlMasdar] (4:40 P.M.) – Units of Syrian Arab Army killed scores of jihadist rebels in the Idlib and Hama governorates this weekend, the Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA) reported on Sunday.

Citing a field reporter, SANA said that the Syrian Army scored several direct hits on the jihadist positions in the southwestern woodlands of the Jisr Al-Shughour District.

Furthermore, the SANA report claimed that the Syrian Army strikes managed to kill several jihadists, while also destroying their arms.

Among the jihadist rebels killed was a Hay’at Tahrir Al-Sham sniper that was identified as Iyad Kasar Ramoud.

The Syrian Arab Army has recently intensified their strikes on the Jisr Al-Shughour countryside, as they prepare to kickoff their long-awaited offensive.

Syrians cast vote in first local elections since 2011, except US-backed Kurds
[AlMasdar] Syrian citizens voted in the country’s first local elections in seven years on Sunday, when polling stations opened for the election of the Local Administration Councils.

Footage from Damascus shows citizens casting their vote in the country’s first local elections since 2011. Polling stations opened at 07:00 local time (04:00 GMT) on Sunday and will close at 19:00 local time (16:00 GMT).

More than 40,000 candidates are competing for 18,478 seats across all of the country’s provinces, Syria’s official SANA news agency reported.

US-backed Kurdish political party refuses to participate in Syrian elections

[AlMasdar] The US-backed Syrian Democratic Council has refused to participate in the municipal elections taking place across Syria.

The Syrian Democratic Council said it would not participate in an election under the rule of the Arab nationalist Ba’ath Party.

“The regime wants us to remain under its rule and under the rule of the Baath,” the spokesperson for the Syrian Democratic Council, Ibrahim Ibrahim, said on Sunday.

Prior to election day, several Syrian candidates in the northwestern province of Al-Hasakah were detained by the Kurdish-led Asayish forces, causing outrage among many locals.

While Damascus and the SDC are currently engaged in peace talks, both sides have yet to reach any agreement on the fate of the areas controlled by the latter.

Obama repeatedly stutters, talks about himself 79 times while campaigning for candidates
[American Mirror] There were times during a Thursday rally Barack Obama couldn’t help but talk about himself, even though he was supposed to be talking about other people.

There were other times he could barely talk at all.

During the Cleveland rally for Rich Cordray and Betty Sutton, Obama repeatedly talked about himself, despite the candidates sitting behind him.

Several times, he stuttered as he attempted to attack President Trump and the success of recent Republican initiatives.

"I see you," Obama started, pointing into the audience.

"Let, let, let, let, let me just say these, these are friends of mine," Obama said, stumbling over his words, "I admit I am biased."

Several times, Obama called Cordray and Sutton a "friend of mine."

"I have worked with them," he said, keeping the focus on himself.

Several times, Obama attempted to regale the audience with stories about when he was important and the President.

U.S. Doctors Are Performing Double Mastectomies On Healthy 13-Year-Old Girls
[The Federalist] Some physicians in the United States are performing double mastectomies on healthy 13-year-old girls. The justification is gender dysphoria ("transgenderism")‐the girls now identify as boys and therefore want to look like boys.

Sometimes this dysphoria doesn’t appear until adolescence, and often little or no psychological evaluation is done to determine the underlying cause of the teenager’s desire to mutilate her body. But these doctors are willing to give her what she thinks she wants. And your federal tax money is paying for research to validate this gruesome treatment (see here and here).

Reasonable people would be mystified, if not repelled, by the statements and actions of a leading researcher into transgender treatment. In a study funded by a $5.7 million grant from the National Institutes of Health (NIH), researchers including Dr. Johanna Olson of Children’s Hospital Los Angeles are supposedly evaluating use of puberty blockers and cross-sex hormones on dysphoric children.

Swiss prosecutors open rape case against Tariq Ramadan
[ENGLISH.ALARABIYA.NET] Prosecutors in Geneva have opened a rape and sexual misconduct investigation against Islamic scholar Tariq Ramadan, who has been detained in France since February on separate rape charges, Swiss media reported Sunday.

The Tribune de Geneve newspaper quoted justice ministry spokesman Henri Della Casa as saying that authorities had decided to open a formal criminal inquiry into allegations that Ramadan raped a woman in a Geneva hotel in 2008.

“I confirm the opening of an inquiry,” the paper quoted Della Casa as saying, a key step that indicated the authorities believed the allegations merit further investigation.

The accuser lodged her complaint in April.

“The prosecutors and Geneva police have worked quickly and worked well,” Romain Jordan, the lawyer representing Ramadan’s Swiss accuser, told AFP in an email.

He described the decision to open a criminal inquiry as “a major advance” that “demonstrates the seriousness of the allegations made by our client.”

Ramadan, a Swiss citizen and Oxford University professor whose grandfather founded Egypt’s Muslim Brotherhood movement, has not yet been interviewed by Swiss prosecutors.

Jordan said that following the opening of a criminal case, Swiss investigators will now have to travel to France to hear Ramadan’s side of the alleged rape.

The Syrian Army spy’s video was released by the official media wing of the Tiger Forces this week; it shows the operative traveling through the western countryside of Aleppo.

The Syrian Arab Army is planning to launch a large-scale operation in the western countryside of Aleppo soon.

According to a military source in Damascus, the Syrian Army has been building up their forces in west Aleppo for an offensive to capture the ’Anadan Plain and last jihadist-held areas near the quiet provincial capital.

Boko Haram gang members sentenced to ten years for murder -- community outraged
[LETABAHERALD.CO.ZA] Thirteen members of the notorious Boko Haram
... not to be confused with Procol Harum, Harum Scarum, possibly to be confused with Helter Skelter. The Nigerian version of al-Qaeda and the Taliban rolled together and flavored with a smigeon of distinctly Subsaharan ignorance and brutality...
gang which terrorised residents in Ritavi for about three years were sentenced to six and ten years imprisonment respectively for violent crimes by the Polokwane High Court on Monday September 10.

The infamous gang members, all from Dan village, who terrorised the residents of Lusaka Village and the surrounding areas were convicted and sentenced for contravening the Rioters Assemblies Act and murder.

Sipho Shabangu (32) was sentenced to an effective 10 years imprisonment for killing Joel Nkgapele (27), who was commonly known as ’Sakhile’ by hacking him to death with an axe next to the local tavern on February 12 last year.

Shabanu’s accomplices, Joseph Regani (22), Thembinkosi Rikhotso (20), Ralph Mushwana (24), Amukelani Ngomane (19), George Nkuna (33), Shaddy Baloyi (26), Nhlamulo Nyathi (19), Ben Malesa (27), Joseph Nukeri (22), Olly Shikati (26), Tiyana Xivutiso (19) and Dennis Baloyi (21) were each sentenced to six years imprisonment.

Provincial Police Commissioner, Lieutenant General Nneke Ledwaba welcomed the jail terms imposed on members of the ill famed group which will possibly bring a relief to all the affected communities in the area.

Ledwaba hailed the excellent performance by the provincial detectives and the crime intelligence.

"We hope that these jail terms will serve as a deterrent to those who are still perpetrating these type of heinous acts," concluded General Ledwaba.

Syria-Lebanon-Iran
Walter Mitty at the Negotiating Table
[AMGREATNESS] Former Secretary of State John Kerry has been conducting unauthorized shuttle diplomacy, trying to salvage what remains of the fraudulent Iran deal. According to reports, he has been pressuring Iran on the fringes of its Middle East empire, about Yemen and Syria, and hoping to include the active Iranian missile program in a new deal.

At the same time, one presumes that he has been working with the Europeans to find ways around the new sanctions, ways to read international agreements (no matter how strained the interpretation) to allow European and the Chinese governments to protect their companies from U.S. sanctions.

In short, as the Iranian people’s disgust with and rebellion against the regime gains steam, Kerry seeks to give it a new lease on life, in direct opposition to current administration policy. Kerry himself admitted as much, attacking the administration in his talks with Iranian Foreign Minister Javad Zarif, and attacking it publicly for what he believes is its policy of regime change rather than engagement on his pet issues.

Fortunately, the people of the region seem to be as opposed to the mullahs as Kerry assumes the administration is. Regime change seems to be the policy of an increasing number of Iranians, who are striking and taking to the streets on a daily basis. And closer to home than either Syria or Yemen, people in the majority-Shia city of Basra, Iraqis recently torched the Iranian consulate there, as well as the headquarters of Iran-friendly militias.

Kerry’s own personal foreign policy reflects neither that of the duly elected U.S. government which he once served, nor the people of Iran and its would-be satrapies. It’s merely another manifestation of a party and a political class that refuses to admit it lost the last election, and with it, the right to steer the ship of state onto the rocks.

India-Pakistan
Papers indicate Afghan issue not sole cause of US-Pakistan discord
[Dawn] Two recent US documents ‐ the 2019 budget proposals and the Pentagon’s 2018 report to Congress on China ‐ indicate that differences between the United States and Pakistain go beyond Afghanistan as Washington feels Islamabad is gradually slipping out of its orbit.

The budget proposals underline China and Russia as "the central threat to America’s prosperity and security" and highlight the strategy to meet this challenge.

The Defence Department’s report warns Congress that "China will seek to establish additional military bases in countries with which it has a long-standing friendly relationship and similar strategic interests, such as Pakistain, and in which there is a precedent for hosting foreign militaries".

The US media also noticed Washington’s growing concern as Wall Street Journal reported this week that "in Pakistain, China and the US are clashing over China’s One Belt, One Road initiative".

While Washington is concerned that China is trying to gain global influence through "debt trap diplomacy" by lending countries money for projects they can’t afford, "Beijing calls this Western propaganda," the report added.

The budget proposals, released in Washington last week, stressed that "the central challenge to US prosperity and security is the re-emergence of long-term, strategic competition (with) ... revisionist powers" China and Russia.

A quote from the US National Security Strategy warns that "China and Russia want to shape a world consistent with their authoritarian model ‐ gaining veto authority over other nations’ economic, diplomatic, and security decisions".

The budget proposals then describe how the Trump administration plans to deal with the threat by building "a more lethal, resilient, and rapidly innovating joint force, combined with a robust constellation of allies and partners".

This alliance and the new force "will sustain American influence and ensure favourable balances of power that safeguard the free and open international order", the document adds.

It points out that in alignment with the National Defence Strategy, the air force’s budget for 2019 prioritises long-term competition with China and Russia by "investing in key capabilities to increase the lethality of the force through cost-effective modernisation.

The strategy prioritises major power competition and vows to "reverse the erosion of US military advantage in relation to China and Russia".

The document informs Congress that the defence budget request fulfills the Pentagon’s objectives by increasing "lethality; resilience (and) agility" of the defence forces. The objective behind this approach is to "build a flexible and dynamic force; and work by, with, and through allies and partners".

The document also informs Congress that the Pentagon has taken specific decisions about the budget that support "a more capable, ready, and efficient force that can project power globally for full-spectrum operations against a range of threats".

The document explains the US decision to partner with India to reverse China’s growing influence in the Indo-Pacific region.

The Pentagon’s report to Congress on China argues that Beijing’s growing arms exports are geared to promote China’s "broader foreign policy goals", which is particularly evident in its "arms sales to Pakistain and demand for Chinese armed UAVs".

From 2012 through 2016, China was the fifth largest arms supplier in the world, completing more than $20 billion in sales. Of these sales, military equipment worth $8 billion went to Indo-Pacific countries, primarily Pakistain.

The Pentagon report claims that China’s ability to remain among the world’s top five global arms suppliers largely hinges on continued strong sales to Pakistain and demand for its armed UAVs.

In 2015, China signed an agreement with Pakistain for the sale of eight YUAN-class submarines; the first four submarines will be built in China and the remaining four in Pakistain, the report added.

Afghanistan
Taliban likely to demand release of Anas Haqqani for the revival of peace talks
[KhaamaPress] The Taliban
...the Pashtun equivalent of men...
group will likely demand the release of a senior Haqqani network leader, Anas Haqqani, and scores of other Taliban inmates for the revival of peace talks, it has been reported.

Sources within the Taliban ranks have told NBC News that the youngest son of the feared Haqqani terror network’s founder is among hundreds of prisoners whom the Taliban is demanding be released as part of an upcoming round of talks with the United States.

"This meeting with the U.S. authorities would either help pave the way for more meaningful talks or stop them forever," a Taliban Überstürmbannführer in Afghanistan’s Helmand
...an Afghan province populated mostly by Pashtuns, adjacent to Injun country in Pak Balochistan...
Province said on the condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak to the news media. "If they are sincere in talks in the future, they would accept our proposal for a prisoners’ exchange."

This comes as sources privy of the development within the Taliban ranks had earlier told Rooters that the leaders of the group were meeting to discuss the makeup of the three- or four-person delegation and the subjects to be discussed.

The sources had said the Taliban would like to discuss an exchange of prisoners and could hold another meeting soon if the United States showed seriousness in talks by releasing prisoners.

"This meeting will determine the future talks and we would see if the U.S. is serious and sincere in negotiation," one of the officials involved had said.

"We would hand over a list of prisoners languishing in jails across Afghanistan. If they set free our prisoners then we would meet again for another great cause," the sources added.
ToloNews adds:
The four Taliban officials, speaking from Afghanistan, United Arab Emirates and Qatar
...an emirate on the east coast of the Arabian Peninsula. It sits on some really productive gas and oil deposits, which produces the highest per capita income in the world. They piss it all away on religion, financing the Moslem Brotherhood and several al-Qaeda affiliates. Home of nutbag holy manYusuf al-Qaradawi...
, said that the next round of discussions will be held very soon and deal with a possible prisoner exchange, NBC said.

But despite the Taliban’s tough talk, it is unlikely the US-backed Afghan government will agree to releasing such a senior figure in the insurgency without major concessions from the other side, experts said.

In Washington, the State Department said no talks were scheduled and declined to comment on whether a potential prisoner swap was on the table, NBC reported. On Tuesday, State Department spokeswoman Heather Nauert told news hounds, "We’re ready to work with the people of Afghanistan, the government of Afghanistan, and to talk to the Taliban all together to bring an end to the conflict."

In recent months, the US has stepped up attempts to broker peace talks between the Afghan government and the Afghan Taliban, the Death Eater group ousted after sheltering the late Osama bin Laden
... who doesn't live anywhere anymore...
as he plotted the 9/11 attacks. Since the 2001 US-led invasion, more than 2,400 American personnel and tens of thousands of Afghans have died.

President Donald Trump
...New York real estate developer, described by Dems as illiterate, racist, misogynistic, and what ever other unpleasant descriptions they can think of, elected by the rest of us as 45th President of the United States...
’s impatience with the 17-year-old war has prompted US diplomats and commanders to gamble on a bid to kick-start peace negotiations, including holding direct talks with the Taliban, current and former US officials have told NBC News.

A former US official with extensive experience in Afghanistan said that the administration sees a potential window of opportunity to advance peace talks, but the effort was still at an early stage.

"There are serious indications that there are internal discussions inside the Taliban," he said of their response to the offer for reconciliation, despite the group’s position that the Afghan government is illegitimate. The former official spoke on the condition of anonymity due to the sensitivity of the discussions.

NBC reported Anas Haqqani, son of Jalaluddin Haqqani
...founder and still titular head of the Haqqani Network. Jalaluddin is old and tough and very crafty, one of the few Pashtun warlords who was worth spit...
who founded the Death Eater group under his name in the 1970s, tops the list of those the Taliban is saying must be released, according to the Taliban officials.

Anas Haqqani has been in Afghan custody since October 2014 when US security forces nabbed him while en route to Qatar from Bahrain.
And from Dawn:
Taliban leaders are demanding closure of US bases in Afghanistan and release of hundreds of their prisoners for continuing peace talks with the United States, the US media reported on Saturday.

Zalmay Khalilzad, a former US ambassador recently named as a special adviser for Afghanistan peace talks, arrived in the United Arab Emirates this week for the next round of US-Taliban talks, NBC News reported.

“This meeting with the US authorities would either help pave the way for more meaningful talks or stop them forever,” said one of the four senior Taliban officials who spoke to NBC News.

Other US media outlets, however, reported that the Afghan government was unlikely to concede to the request without a commensurate concession from the Taliban.

“The number of US bases maintained…is also a point of contention; the US wants two, but the Taliban want zero. The Taliban’s main `reason for war, their casus belli, if you will, is the occupation,” retired Col Christopher Kolenda, a former Pentagon adviser who has negotiated with the Taliban, explained in an interview with VOA.

India-Pakistan
Pakistan willing to open Afghan land route for India: US envoy
[Dawn] Pakistain approached Afghanistan earlier this year, indicating its willingness to discuss the resumption of trade between Afghanistan and India through the Pak land route, says a senior US diplomat.

In an interview to India’s Economic Times newspaper, Ambassador John Bass said that reopening land routes between South and Central Asia will benefit all countries in the region.

Pakistain does not allow India to use the land route for trading with Afghanistan, arguing that technical and strategic issues connected to transit trade should be resolved first.

"A couple of months ago, for the first time the Pak government expressed a willingness to start talks with its Afghan counterparts for parameters to enabling trade between India and Afghanistan through Pakistain," Mr Bass said.

The US ambassador to Afghanistan also said that Indian firms were gradually increasing their investments in Afghanistan. Last year’s trade show in Delhi led to $27 million of investments at the event itself, and another $200 million of "prospective" investments from Indian companies, much of which had materialised, he added.

Ambassador Bass told the Indian newspaper that a political settlement in Afghanistan was in Pakistain’s long-term interest. "Increased trade in both directions, increased connectivity through central and south Asia through Afghanistan ‐ those are all missed opportunities if Pakistain has its sole focus on perpetuating the status quo," he said.

The US envoy said that India raised the issue of US sanctions on Iran when US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and Defence Secretary Jim Mattis visited New Delhi earlier this month for Two-plus-Two talks.

The Indians were particularly interested in knowing how the sanctions would impact Chabahar port, which was built in Iran with Indian assistance for connecting India with Central Asia through Afghanistan.

The Indian government conveyed its perspectives "on the importance of Chabahar as a means to expand bilateral trade and help improve Afghanistan’s connectivity with South Asia," he said.

"We are processing and evaluating how best to reimpose sanctions on Iran, with the Iranian regime’s malevolent behaviour and its activities in destabilising its neighbours," Ambassador Bass said.

"My government is still thinking through how Chabahar factors in the reimposition of the toughest sanctions that we believe need to be put in place to hold the Iranian government accountable for its action."

He said the US administration was reviewing the sanctions to see how to deal with such issues, without hurting the US objective of persuading Iran to change its policies.

Ambassador Bass said the US realised that the conflict in Afghanistan could not be resolved through military means alone. "No one in the US government is saying at this point that we expect this conflict to end with a military victory. We believe that this conflict will end with a political settlement," he said.

Kavanaugh Accuser Comes Forward: ‘I Thought He Might Inadvertently Kill Me'
[DailyBeast] "It’s disturbing that these uncorroborated allegations from more than 35 years ago, during high school, would surface on the eve of a committee vote after Democrats sat on them since July," spokesman Taylor Foy said in a statement. "If Ranking Member Feinstein and other Committee Democrats took this claim seriously, they should have brought it to the full Committee’s attention much earlier."

Democrats, though, want Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-IA), the chairman of the committee, to postpone the vote until Ford’s allegations are investigated.

"To railroad a vote now would be an insult to the women of America and the integrity of the Supreme Court," Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) said in a statement.

At least one Republican indicated a willingness to hear more from Ford before the judiciary committee votes on Thursday.

"If Ms. Ford wishes to provide information to the committee, I would gladly listen to what she has to say and compare that against all other information we have received about Judge Kavanaugh," Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC)
Surprise!
said in a statement. "If the committee is to hear from Ms. Ford it should be done immediately so the process can continue as scheduled."
I seen 'dis movie before:

No surprise here. A registered Democrat, College Professor in Palo Alto, Ca. Even her allegations don't even jive with her marriage Counselor 's notes of 2012 that stated she was allegedly sexually assaulted by four teenagers, not two as stated by the accuser in her letter . The FBI responded that the don't investigate sexual assaults and furthermore went on to state that a 37 year old allegation is way past the statute of Limitations for a Maryland DA to investigate and or prosecute. An obvious hitjob by Feinstein and the accuser.

I propose Republican Party discipline. I was referred to a video some months ago (hat tip to Rantburg) about British parliamentary politics. There were a couple of party operatives, can't remember if they were Labor or Tory, talking about making sure that all members of the party vote the party line. Iraq
German defense minister weighs keeping forces in Middle East post-ISIS
Oh?
[Rudaw] As the fight against ISIS on the Syria-Iraq border by the US-led coalition wraps up, Germany is considering a continued military presence in the Middle East.

"First we must bring this deployment to a successful end. I don’t want to rule the idea out, let me put it this way," Rooters quoted Germany Defense Minister Ursula von der Leyen as telling news hounds on Saturday in Jordan.

Leyen was inspecting forces at Azraq air base that has around 300 German troops. Germany pulled its forces from Incirlik in The Sick Man of Europe Turkey
...the only place on the face of the earth that misses the Ottoman Empire....
in 2017 after a diplomatic fallout and German MPs complaining they were unable to inspect forces there.
Ah.

, called last week for efforts to be undertaken to prevent a chemical weapons' attack from being carried out in Syria's Idlib ahead of an expected regime assault on the governorate.

The issue of German military support in the Middle East is highly politicized with many leftists being pacifists or non-interventionists, and Social Democrats not supporting military action without a direct mandate from the United Nations
...a formerly good idea gone bad...
Go on...
Germany has been a strong supporter of the Kurdistan Region's Peshmerga, providing arms, training, and advising since the Kurdish forces first fought back against the Lion of Islam group in 2014.
Well done, Germany.
Pockets of ISIS remnants remain in Iraq, despite incumbent Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi's declaration of victory over the Lion of Islam group in December 2017.

Maxine Waters: Trump ‘Has Displayed the Most Despicable Behavior That Any Human Being Could Do'
Sunday on MSNBC’s "Am Joy," Rep. Maxine Waters (D-CA) accused President Donald Trump of displaying "the most despicable behavior that any human being could do."

Waters said, "Let me predict that there are many Republicans that will not continue to stand with him. This president has displayed the most despicable behavior that any human being could do. And certainly, as a president of the United States, he has disappointed millions of people. And so he’s not a role model for our children. He is a liar. He’s a con man. He’s deceitful. He makes up stories day in and day out. Despite the fact that the 1% who will gain mightily from the tax cuts may continue to support him because of the profits that they will make, I think the average human being, the average American, even many of those who are Republicans, cannot stand to have this president represent us in this world any longer."

She continued, "So when it will be, I don’t know. But it is, you know, possible. And He’s trying to frighten them by saying this black woman who has no reason to talk about impeachment keeps talking about impeachment. Well, he’s not only trying to frighten them, but he’s trying to bring out that constituency of his who do not like black people anyway. So I’m not worried about that. Let him continue to say whatever he would like to say. I think the dots are getting closer to being connected. I think that Manafort is going to play a big role in this. I think our special counsel is doing a good job. And in the final analysis, I think we will understand how he and his allies and all of those who have been, you know, wanting Trump to lift the sanctions so that they can all benefit from drilling for oil in the Arctic are going to be discovered. They’re going to be indicted in my own estimation."

-Short Attention Span Theater-
New Mexico observatory closed for 'security issue' to reopen
[FOX] ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. ‐ An observatory in the mountains of southern New Mexico that had been closed since early September because of an undisclosed security concern is now scheduled to reopen on Monday, officials managing the facility said.

The Sunspot Solar Observatory no longer faces a security threat to staff, the Association of Universities for Research in Astronomy said in a statement Sunday. The facility closed on Sept. 6.

The association has hired a temporary security team to patrol the observatory when it reopens. "Given the significant amount of publicity the temporary closure has generated, and the consequent expectation of an unusual number of visitors to the site, we are temporarily engaging a security service while the facility returns to a normal working environment," the association said.

Authorities have not revealed the nature of the security threat the observatory faced. The FBI has referred all questions to the association.

"We recognize that the lack of communications while the facility was vacated was concerning and frustrating for some. However, our desire to provide additional information had to be balanced against the risk that, if spread at the time, the news would alert the suspect and impede the law enforcement investigation. That was a risk we could not take," the association said.

Located atop Sacramento Peak, the observatory was established in 1947.
It overlooks the Tularosa Basin -- an expanse of desert that includes the city of Alamogordo, Holloman Air Force Base, White Sands Missile Range, White Sands National Monument and the site of the world's first atomic bomb test.

The telescope at Sunspot was originally built by the U.S. Air Force. After several years of operation, it was transferred to the National Solar Observatory, which is part of the National Science Foundation.

New Mexico State University in 2016 launched an initiative funded by the foundation to upgrade and update the facility through the newly formed Sunspot Solar Observatory Consortium.

Officials said Sunspot's one-of-a-kind telescope produces some of the sharpest images of the sun available in the world. Data from observations done at Sunspot is sent to New Mexico State University servers and can be used by researchers around the world.

Iran: French police were ‘slow to respond’ when Kurds attacked Paris embassy Friday
[Rudaw] Iran on Saturday accused French police of being too slow to respond to an assault on its embassy in Gay Paree on Friday by Kurdish activists outraged by Tehran’s missile attack on Koya last week.

According to Fars News Agency, a group of around 15 Kurds affiliated with Komala, a Kurdish opposition party, arrived at the Iranian Embassy
...You will never find a more wretched hive of scum and villainy!...
in Gay Paree on Friday and proceeded to and smash its windows with stones, fire extinguishers, and computer parts and burn the Iranian flag. The activists did not breech the building itself.

"The French government should take all necessary measures to protect Iranian diplomatic missions in that country," Iranian foreign ministry front man Bahram Qasemi was quoted as saying by the state news agency IRNA on Saturday.

"Unfortunately, the French police did not arrive as expected on the scene on time, although the assailants were members of a terrorist organization," he added.

Qasemi claimed a number of the protesters were jugged

and called for them to face trial and punishment.

French police were not immediately available for comment, according to Rooters.

The Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corp (IRGC) fired seven surface-to-surface missiles on September 8 striking the Kurdistan Region refugee camps and headquarters of two Iranian-Kurdish parties, the PDKI and the KDP-I, while they were holding leadership meetings.

Seventeen people were killed, including several party leaders, and 46 were maimed in the attack.

Iran’s missile attack on Kurdish parties in Koya was a message to its enemies, the commander of the IRGC said Friday.

"The IRGC’s recent Dire Revenge against holy warriors had a very meaningful message for the enemies, particularly for the superpowers who assume that they can impose their dirty objectives and bullying on us," Maj. Gen. Mohammad Ali Jafari said at a funeral in Tehran, Tasnim news reported.

He touted their stockpile of missiles with an accuracy and range that give Iran "unmatched capabilities."

The strike on the PDKI and KDP-I was a demonstration of their precision, he explained.

PDKI and KDP-I seek greater political and cultural rights for Kurds in Iran. They resumed their armed struggle against the Iranian regime a couple of years ago.

Israel-Palestine-Jordan
Israel to Build Around Gaza World’s Longest Concrete Wall
[ASHARQ] A “protective” wall that Israel has been building for months along the border with the Gaza Strip will become “the world’s longest concrete wall” and will extend over 65 kilometers to reach the Strip’s land and maritime border, the Israeli daily Yedioth Ahronoth reported.

Israel decided to build the wall after the 2014 war, but its implementation began after three years of internal debate.

The wall is the third line Israel has constructed along the border to confront the Palestinians and prevent them from carrying out attacks.

Following the Oslo Accords in the early 1990s and after the disengagement from Gaza in 2005, Israel established buffer zones around Gaza and set up barbed wire, but these measures did not stop underground attacks.

The wall aims to provide underground and off-the-ground protection from infiltration through the coastal strip. It will also include physical barriers and sophisticated technological detection systems, according to the Israeli newspaper.

To date, Israel has used two million concrete blocks in the construction of the wall through five concrete factories that have been built along the border. The region employs 1,200 workers from different countries, including Romania and Brazil.

According to the newspaper, the land wall will include an underground barrier at a depth of tens of meters, equipped with sensors that can detect any drilling of tunnels by land or any movement of divers across the sea. The maritime wall includes intelligent waves for early warning.

The cost of building the concrete wall is 3 billion shekels, ($1=3.60 shekels).

Hamas uses military tunnels for various purposes, including carrying out operations and infiltrating into Israeli settlements.

Salisbury panic as ‘Russian' and friend fall ill ‘with Novichok symptoms' at Prezzo 300m from where Skripals collapsed
[The Sun] A POISONING panic gripped Salisbury as two restaurant diners were today taken ill close to where the Skripals collapsed.

Police in bio-hazard suits shut down part of the city centre on Sunday as they dealt with a "medical incident" in a branch of Prezzo.

They evacuated nearby restaurants and pubs while they investigated why the man and woman were taken ill ‐ amid reports from Sky News that one is Russian.

PA reported that a source briefed by emergency services said the police were called as the symptoms were consistent with Novichok poisoning.

They said: "The ambulance crew at the site took the decision that the symptoms seemed consistent with Novichok poisoning which is why they called their colleagues in the police.

They added: "The symptoms of Novhichok poisoning and particular types of narcotic abuse are very similar."

Iraq: 3 Islamic State militants apprehended in Mosul

Mosul (IraqiNews.com) – Three Islamic State militants were arrested Sunday in the group’s previously proclaimed capital Mosul, a security official was quoted as saying.

“Nineveh policemen arrested three members of the terrorist Daesh (Islamic State) group in Mosul’s eastern side,” Iraqi news website Baghdad Today quoted Spokesman for the Interior Ministry Maj. Gen. Saad Maan as saying.

“One of the arrestees was serving as a companion of the so-called security director of Daesh’s Dijlah State,” he added.

#6  @#3: Per Jonathan Turley
...
Ford says that she was traumatized for years by the experience. However, there is no indication that she ever made a formal compliant to the police or previously raised the issue during Kavanaugh’s prior confirmation hearings. There remains the question of why Ford did not go public earlier when Kavanaugh was nominated for the D.C. Circuit or why she wanted Congress to know about the allegation but said that she did not want to go come forward herself. Ford is an established academic who would clearly be supported in coming forward to report an attempted rape.

Now that the identity of the accuser is known, it will be possible to look at supporting or conflicting accounts. Did she share the allegation of an attempted rape with friends at the time? Is there any record of seeking medical assistance or injuries? She says that she called a government official about reporting the incident at the time but there does not appear to be a record. She also said that she received medical attention, but again produced no record.

The polygraph is the most interesting dynamic element. While not admissible in court, the accuracy of polygraphs are often put between 70 and 90 percent when conducted properly. I have been counsel in polygraph cases and there can be serious problems raised in the performance of the tests.

#14  Martha G. Instead, Christine Blasey-Ford is going after Brett Kavanaugh out of spite and revenge for a case rulled on by Brett Kavanaugh mother. The case number is 156006V.

[AceOfSpades] Jimmy was having trouble in school. His teacher was always yelling at him, "You're driving me crazy, Jimmy. Can't you learn anything? One day Jimmy's mother came to school to see how he was doing. The teacher told her honestly that her son was simply a disaster, getting very low marks, and that she had never had such an unmotivated and ignorant boy in her entire teaching career. Jimmy's mom, shocked at the feedback, withdrew her son from school and moved out of Detroit, relocating to Cleveland.

25 years later, the teacher was diagnosed with irreversible cardiac disease. Her doctors all strongly advised her to have open heart surgery, which only one surgeon at the Cleveland Clinic could perform. Left with no other options, the teacher decided to have the operation, which was remarkably successful.

When she opened her eyes after the surgery she saw the handsome young doctor who headed her surgical team smiling down at her. She wanted to thank him, but could not talk. Her face started to turn blue, she raised her hand, trying to tell him something, but quickly died.

The doctor was shocked, wondering what went wrong so suddenly. When the doctor turned around to leave the room, he saw Jimmy, now a janitor at the Clinic, had unplugged the life-support equipment in order to plug in his vacuum cleaner. If you thought that Jimmy had become a heart-surgeon, there is a high likelihood that you voted for Hillary.

Netanyahu: Israel Will Never Again Fail To Preempt Attacks
When the presumed becomes the said.
[Jpost] On the eve of the 45th anniversary of the Yom Kippur War, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu told his cabinet Sunday that Israel will never repeat the mistake it made in 1973 by not preempting an enemy attack.

“Forty-five years ago, our intelligence misjudged the war intentions of Egypt and Syria,” Netanyahu said, referring to the intelligence assessments at the time that discounted an Egyptian and Syrian surprise attack.

“When these intentions became clear beyond any doubt, and when the danger was already at hand, the political echelon committed a grave error in that it did not approve a preemptive strike. We will never repeat this error,” he said.

According to minutes from the cabinet meeting six hours before war broke out on Yom Kippur in 1973, then-prime minister Golda Meir and defense minister Moshe Dayan opposed a preemptive strike, even though by that time Israel had clear intelligence information of an imminent Egyptian and Syrian attack.

According to minutes of that meeting that were released for publication eight years ago, then chief of staff Lt.-Gen. David “Dado” Elazar raised the idea of a preemptive strike and said it would give Israel a “huge advantage and save many lives.”

“We can wipe out the entire Syrian air force at noon,” he said. “We need another 30 hours to destroy the missiles. If they plan to attack at 5 p.m., the air force will operate freely against the Syrian army. This is what we are capable of.”

Meir said that she was “tempted,” but that a decision could wait for a number of hours until there is a dialogue with the Americans. Dayan was adamantly opposed to a preemptive strike, even “by five minutes.”

He also opposed, as Elazar suggested, calling up the reserves, saying that it was important that the world does not blame Israel for starting the war.

Netanyahu, in an apparent reference to reported Israeli preemptive military actions in Syria to prevent Iranian entrenchment there or weapon transfers to Hezbollah in Lebanon, said that today “Israel is constantly working to prevent our enemies from arming themselves with advanced weapons.”

The country’s red lines are clearer than ever, and its resolve to enforce them are stronger than ever, he said.

French artillery hammers Hajin as SDF advances on ISIS holdouts - monitor
More on this story from yesterday.
[Rudaw] Syrian Democratic Forces entered ISIS-held Baghuz and Hajin in eastern Deir ez-Zor province on Saturday with heavy artillery support from the US-led international coalition.

French forces, as part of the coalition, targeted the enclave with some 70 shells in one hour, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.

The SDF, an umbrella group of local forces, entered areas around Hajin with the assistance of the People's Protection Units (YPG) Asayesh (security forces), the Observatory added.

"We will take all this place from ISIS," the SDF commander "Shergo" said in a video statement.

The coalition and partnered anti-ISIS forces face tunnels, mines, and suicide counterattacks. ISIS has dug tunnels between the towns, necessitating the coaliton ground and air strikes.

The SDF and the US-led international coalition began the third phase of Operation Roundup on September 3 to clear the area east of the Euphrates of ISIS fighters.

The YPG stated their forces concentrated on the Baghuz and Sousse axes. Two machine gun positions were destroyed, and then ISIS used a vehicle-borne improvised bomb (VBIED) in a counterattack.

The SDF stated they killed 16 opposition fighters, with six of their fighters being maimed and two killed. An SDF demining team cleared 17 mines.

The Observatory reported that three busses and 10 vehicles carrying an unknown number of reinforcements arrived in the area.

Prior to the operation they dropped leaflets informing people of safe routes to flee. It is unclear how many people remain in the area.

Operation Roundup began on May 1.

India Cuts Iranian Oil Imports Ahead of November Deadline
[LI] India, the second biggest oil customer for Iran, has begun cutting Iranian crude oil imports ahead of the November deadline set by the Trump administration, Indian newspapers report. The United States is expected to impose a fresh round of crippling sanction on Tehran in early November, targeting the country’s oil industry ‐ Islamic Republic’s main source of revenue.

The news comes a week after U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo told India to bring its ’oil imports from Iran to zero,’ during a official visit to New Delhi. "We have told the Indians consistently, as we have told every nation, that on November 4th the sanctions with respect to Iranian crude oil will be enforced," he told Indian reporters earlier this month. "We will consider waivers where appropriate, but that it is our expectation that the purchases of Iranian crude oil will go to zero from every country, or sanctions will be imposed."

Despite Secretary Pompeo’s clear stance, New Delhi still hopes to get Obama-era waivers on oil imports from Iran. "India is one of the countries which is likely to get some waiver, given the strategic nature of [India]-US ties," the CNN-affiliated Indian TV network reported.

However, there are signs that New Delhi might be getting ready to halt all oil imports from Iran. India’s Petroleum Ministry has told refiners to brace themselves for a "drastic reduction or zero" Iranian imports, media reports disclosed.

The Mysterious Disappearance of the Diciotti Migrants
[gatesofVienna] There was a lot of controversy last month both inside and outside of Italy about a boatload of "rescued" refugees that was impounded in a Sicilian port. Now that they were allowed to disembark, it turns out that a large number of migrants on the Diciotti have simply vanished ‐ surprise, surprise!

Diciotti: 50 migrants entrusted to CEI [Italian Episcopal Conference] disappeared into thin air

In making it known, the undersecretaries of interior: They were so desperate, they preferred to forego guaranteed food and lodging."

1170 migrants on board the ship Diciotti, all disembarked at the port of Catania last 25 August
...
To be precise, of the forty migrants missing, six left on the first day of transfer. While two Eritreans destined for the Diocese of Florence escaped on 2 September, nineteen others (who left) were found on 3 September. Another thirteen disappeared yesterday. The forty migrants who left were limited to showing an interest in formalizing the application of political asylum. As confirmed by Viminale (Ministry of Interior) sources were identified with photos/prints and inserted into a European computer system. Also according to Viminale sources, it is made known that there are other verifications on the exact number of untraceable persons, and it is possible that the group could be more substantial.
...
The immigrants have given it up fast. And there are also those who defend them, such as Father Camillo Ripamonti president of the Astalli Center, the Jesuit structure that deals with migrants, refugees, refugees and asylum seekers: "The reception centers are not centers of detention, and therefore the people lodged there can move away from them freely: theirs is not an escape."

EU begins talks on Iran sanctions-evading payment scheme
[AsiaTimes] Germany, UK, France spearhead effort to preserve nuclear deal.
In commentary published last month, German Foreign Minister Meiko Haas made the case for greater European independence from US foreign-policy initiatives. In order to strengthen European autonomy, he said, countries will need to set up new payment channels and create an independent SWIFT system.

Despite German Chancellor Angela Merkel’s efforts to play down the comments at the time, it seems the process to realize such a vision has already begun.

German news magazine Der Spiegel reported this week that talks were under way between German Finance Minister Olaf Scholz and his British and French counterparts.

The three parties’ discussions center on establishing a financial institution by November – the deadline for compliance with some of the US administration’s sanctions on Iran. The sole purpose of the project will be to process payments for transactions with Iranian entities, in an effort to maintain incentives that motivated Tehran to sign on to the 2015 nuclear deal.

What is being considered will not be a bank, the outlet reported, but a “special purpose vehicle,” similar to a clearinghouse, that will be open to companies from all European Union members.

The three countries have already met several times, including on the sidelines of the Group of 20 finance ministers meeting in mid-July.

Caucasus/Russia/Central Asia
Some Donetsk military formations shifted to internal security

Some Donetsk military formations, formed and operated under the commander of the late Donetsk president Aleksandr Zakharchenko, will be shifted to internal security and other duties, according to data supplied the the Russian military correspondent, Aleksandr Kots.

According to an article published in Komsomol Pravda, many of the combat units were volunteer units formed back in 2014, when the civil war between Russian backed separatists and the Ukraine government became hot. Some of those units consisted of foreign nationals.

Some of the duties for the newly shifted units will include policing and patrol.

Among the units to be shifted to security work include the units Battalion "Prilepin" and Battalion "Legion." Kots added that volunteers who do not want to leave the front line will not be forced to, and can continue their duties.

Kots also said the supervisory work for the changes was being done in Moscow, or under Muskovite supervision. Much of the impetus for the change was to remove command of those units from the Donetsk president's office to ministry level supervision.

Zakharchenko was killed in a bombing attack at a cafe in Donetsk August 31st. He had served as president of Donetsk since July of 2014.
