Social Security forgives debt of daughters whose 'dead' father turned up alive 47 years later
[Wash Times] Two sisters faced with repaying the federal government $100,000 after their "dead" father turned up alive ‐ 47 years later ‐ received some welcome news in the waning hours of 2018.

Lynne Grensted Thurston, 61, said a Social Security Administration agent notified her Monday that her share of the bill and the share owed by her sister, 63-year-old Beth Grensted, had been forgiven.

"We were already sitting down to dinner, and she [the agent] called to say she was leaving the office, but, ’I wanted to let you know that the decision has been made,’" Mrs. Thurston told The Washington Times. "’It’s completely erased for you and your sister.’"

Mrs. Thurston, a gardener who lives in McMinnville, Oregon, could hardly believe it.

"I was just so overwhelmed. It was hard to even process," she said. "I called my sister and said, ’I need you to sit down,’ and she was just blown away. It’s been such a long process. So many people have been praying."

In June 2016, the sisters were hit with a bombshell: Their father, Douglas Grensted, who had been declared legally dead after disappearing on a hunting trip in 1968, actually had faked his death to run off with his mistress to Arizona. He died there in December 2015.
He stopped dropping by to pick up his American Rifleman magazine in 2015. That really was our first clue.
Not only that, but the SSA ordered the sisters and their mother to repay about $100,000 in survivors’ benefits. Mrs. Thurston, who was 11 when her father vanished, was billed about $12,000; her sister Beth, who was 13, owed $10,000, and their mother, Barbara Grensted, received a bill for $87,000.

Nothing to be seen here, move along please.

Kidnapped American teen found alive months after parents' murder
[PULSE.NG] A 21-year-old man has been charged with murdering the parents of a US teen as part of a chilling plot to kidnap her, police said Friday, after 13-year-old Jayme Closs was found alive following three months in captivity.

Jake Thomas Patterson, 21, has been charged with murdering the parents of Wisconsin teen Jayme Closs in order to kidnap the 13-year-old

The subject of a nationwide search since her parents were found murdered in their home in rural Wisconsin in October, Closs made a seemingly miraculous escape Thursday afternoon, seeking help from a neighbor who alerted authorities.

Minutes later police locked away
Into the paddy wagon wit' yez!
the man she identified as her captor, Jake Thomas Patterson, and have charged him with abducting Closs and fatally shooting her parents.

"Jayme was taken against her will and beat feet from the residence in which she was being held and found help," Fitzgerald said.

"At this moment, Jayme is in the comforting embrace of law enforcement," Barron County Sheriff Chris Fitzgerald told news hounds, adding that the teen had been medically cleared from the hospital and was talking to Sherlocks.

Authorities said Patterson had carefully planned his attack -- specifically targeting the young teen for reasons that remained unclear.

The sheriff said the suspect had no prior contact with the Closs family, and that the teen "was the only target."

"I can tell you that the subject planned his actions and took many proactive steps to hide his identity from law enforcement and the general public," Fitzgerald said.

Closs was being held in a rural home approximately 75 miles (120 kilometers) north of her home in Barron, Wisconsin.

Witnesses told US media that the maiden of tender years -- her hair matted and wearing oversized shoes -- approached a neighbor who was walking her dog, asking for help. Together they headed to a nearby home.

"She knocked on our door," Kristin Kasinskas told CNN, "and helped Jayme into the room, and said, 'This is Jayme Closs, call 911 right now.'"

"She said to us: 'This person killed my parents and took me,'" Kasinskas added.

TRAIL HAD GONE COLD
The Minneapolis Star Tribune newspaper, citing witnesses, described Closs's appearance as gaunt, with matted hair and shoes too big for her feet.

Closs had been missing since October 15, when authorities received a 911 call from a cellphone inside her home.

Police found her parents James Closs, 56, and Denise Closs, 46, rubbed out, and undertook a nationwide search for Jayme, describing her as "endangered," but the trail had gone cold until Thursday.

In the wooded area, which has few year-round residents, police had reportedly blocked access to a cabin believed to be that of the suspect.

Closs was believed to have witnessed the murders of her parents but was not considered a suspect based on evidence recovered at the scene, police said at the time.

The Star Tribune said Closs's aunt Sue Allard sobbed upon hearing news that the teen had been found.

"Praise the Lord," she said. "It's the news we've been waiting on for three months. I can't wait to get my arms around her."

Megyn Kelly, formerly of NBC, to be paid in full
[NYT] After a drawn-out negotiation period, NBC and Megyn Kelly have formally agreed to part ways.

The network and the onetime cable news star reached a final agreement on Friday, nearly three months after she wondered aloud on-air why it was inappropriate for white people to dress up in blackface for Halloween.

NBC and a representative for Ms. Kelly declined to reveal the details of the exit package. But according to two people familiar with the negotiations, Ms. Kelly was paid the outstanding balance on her contract, a figure that amounts to roughly $30 million. At the time of the separation, Ms. Kelly was in the middle of a three-year, $69 million contract with the network.

#5  It is unlikely that her lawyers got paid a percentage. She is a poor plebe suing a big company as a part of a class action lawsuit or what have you. She could afford to actually pay their exorbitant fees upfront and on time, rather than promise them money when she won the case. Her agent, on the other hand, almost certainly did get a percentage, which he undoubtedly earned by negotiating such an ironclad contract.

Winter storms sweep across southern Germany and Austria
Congratulations, dudes — it’s winter!
[DW] Meters more snow are forecast to fall on southern Germany and Austria over the next week. A snow plow driver died in Germany when his vehicle fell into an icy river.

The heaviest snowfalls in 20 years have covered southern Germany and Austria and parts of Czechia over the last week. Transport on road and rail has been affected, mainly by snow-laden trees.

Davis police detail torrent of bullets that kills ‘rising star' Officer Natalie Corona during routine call
[Sacramento Bee] DAVIS - Davis police officer Natalie Corona died as the result of a chilling, resolute ambush by a city resident on a bicycle who rode up to an accident scene she was investigating Thursday night, then opened fire with a hail of bullets from a semiautomatic handgun, police said.

Chief Darren Pytel described an inexplicable attack that began just before 7 p.m. near 5th and D streets as Corona responded to a minor three-car collision.

As she stood talking to one of the motorists, the gunman glided up on a bicycle, stopping in the shadows on a sidewalk, then walked toward the 22-year-old rookie police officer and began firing.

"The suspect basically just opened up firing, shot her once and she went down to the ground, and he ended up shooting her multiple times," Pytel said at a news conference Friday night at police headquarters. "At that point, he unloaded a magazine, reloaded and started shooting in another direction."

The shooting 24 hours before was indiscriminate, Pytel said: Corona, who was wearing a protective vest, was shot in the neck and went down, then shot numerous more times.

“This clearly, to us, looks like an ambush,” the chief said, adding, “At this point, we’re speculating that she never saw him.”

After shooting Corona, the gunman opened up on the surrounding scene, striking a nearby fire engine, a house, a passing bus, shooting through a backpack worn by a young woman who was saved when the round lodged in a textbook, and firing at a firefighter running away who was struck in his boot but uninjured.

Somehow, Corona was the only casualty of the shooting spree, which ended when the gunman ran toward a rental home he shared with a roommate at 501 E St., Pytel said.

“It appeared that he basically circled the block,” Pytel said, leaving behind a backpack and going inside his home. Once there, Pytel said, the gunman met up with his roommate but gave no hint of the rampage he had just conducted outside.

Police from throughout the region rushed to the normally quiet college town, eventually surrounding the home.

But even that show of force seemed to have little impact as the gunman emerged from the house.

“At one point he did come out,” Pytel said. “It appeared to officers that he was wearing a ballistic vest, a bulletproof vest. He shouted some stuff, went back in and came back out with a firearm, then went back inside, pushed a couch in front of the door and officers heard a gunshot.”

The gunman had shot himself in the head inside the home, Pytel said, leaving a complete mystery for now about what might have set him off.

Authorities still have not released the gunman’s name, saying they may not do so before next week, but Pytel said he had no known history of violence or threats. His only prior contact with Davis police came last year when he reported being a victim of a crime, “nothing that was extraordinary at all,” the chief said.

Despite the rampage, police responding to the scene never fired a single shot, Pytel said, and much of the initial shooting apparently was captured by the in-car camera in Corona’s SUV.

“It sounds like sounds like the video kept running, and it hadn’t even downloaded into the system because the video was so long from the in-car camera,” he said.

Corona also was wearing a body camera, but Pytel said he was not certain whether that had been activated; given that she was investigating a minor traffic mishap, she may not have turned it on, he said.

Corona, who graduated from the Sacramento Police Department’s training academy in July and completed her field training just before Christmas, responded to the accident scene alone.

Dozens of fuel thieves incinerated in Nigerian tanker explosion
LAGOS, Nigeria (AP) ‐ An overturned oil tanker exploded in Nigeria while dozens of people were scooping up the leaking fuel and many were killed, police and witnesses said Saturday.

Hundreds of people have died in similar accidents in recent years in Nigeria, Africa’s largest oil producer, as impoverished people risk their lives to collect fuel leaking from pipelines or trucks.

"We have recovered 12 corpses and taken 22 persons with serious burns to hospital," police spokeswoman Irene Ugbo told The Associated Press. She said the blast occurred Friday evening in Odukpani in Cross River state in the southeast.

But some residents put the death toll closer to 60.

"The police only recovered a few corpses, many of the other dead were burnt to ashes," witness Richard Johnson told the AP.

He said about 60 people were inside a pit scooping fuel when the explosion occurred. "It is not likely that anyone inside the pit survived as there was a lot of fuel in the pit," Johnson said.

He suggested the blast was caused by an electrical generator that had been brought to the scene to help pump out the fuel for people’s containers.

Zimbabwe plans new currency as dollar shortage bites: Finance Minister
HARARE (Reuters) - Zimbabwe will introduce a new currency in the next 12 months, the country’s Finance Minister said, as a shortage of U.S. dollars plunges the financial system into disarray, forcing businesses to close and threatening unrest.

The southern African nation abandoned its own hyperinflation-wrecked currency in 2009 at the height of an economic recession, adopting the greenback and other currencies including sterling and the South African rand.

But without enough hard currency to back up the $10 billion of electronic funds trapped in local bank accounts, businesses and civil servants are demanding payment in cash which can be deposited and used to make payments both inside and outside the country.
Unlike the Rand and the USD, Cowry shells will always be worth something.

Officials advertise for 100 new doctors - but white people are told not to apply
[Mail] A race row has broken out in South Africa after health officials advertised for 100 new doctors, but did not allow white medics to apply for specialist roles.
News you probably won't hear about in most western networks.
The health department in the KwaZulu-Natal province expanded its registrar programme for 2019 from 314 to 414, but aimed to fill the new posts with only black candidates.

Health bosses said the move was implemented to redress the country's historical racial imbalance of Apartheid that saw most high-ranking positions filed by white doctors.

Campaigners and human rights activists have branded the recruitment policy 'discriminatory, unconstitutional and racist'.
But at least white medics no longer have to waste their time submitting applications. Those medics are badly needed back on the crime-ridden streets.
Leaked documents show the department wanted to train a total of 366 black doctors and had already recruited 32 Indian, 12 white and four mixed race registrars, but need a further 100 black medics to meet employment equity targets.
Tracking applicants by race are they? How very apartheid progressiewe (progressive).

South Africa: Pitch Black Afro Charged With Premeditated Murder, Case Postponed
[All Africa] Local rapper Pitch Black Afro has been charged with premeditated murder and defeating the ends of justice after his wife, Catherine Modusane, died in a Johannesburg bed and breakfast on December 31.

He appeared briefly in the Johannesburg Magistrate's Court on Thursday afternoon. The case was postponed to January 15.

The artist, whose real name is Thulani Ngcobo, told the court he could not afford to pay for a lawyer and he would apply for legal aid.

Dlamini said Modusane was found in a room at a bed and breakfast in Bellevue, Johannesburg, with injuries to her upper body.

Earlier on Wednesday, Daily Sun reported that sources close to the couple said they had been fighting the night before Modusane was found dead in her room.

Britain
Briton jailed for large-scale Liberian cyber attack
[PULSE.NG] A British man was sentenced to 32 months in prison after pleading guilty to computer misuse and criminal property possession from late 2016 to early 2017.

Daniel Kaye, 30, was sentenced to 32 months in prison after pleading guilty to computer misuse and criminal property possession from late 2016 to early 2017.

The court heard the self-taught hacker was paid around $30,000 (26,000 euros) by a rival to disrupt the systems of mobile phone company Lonestar MTN, Liberia's biggest internet provider.

The so-called distributed denial of service (DDoS) attacks overwhelmed its networks and meant its servers couldn't operate properly, prosecutor Robin Sellers told the court.

The firm spent $600,000 (523,000 euros) fixing the problem, losing tens of millions of dollars in revenue, he said.

Kaye's lawyer, Jonathan Green, had argued Lonestar's estimates of its losses were "unsupported by any evidence".

"Nobody died, nobody's life was imperilled, at worst Lonestar customers suffered slow internet speeds," he argued.

Sentencing Kaye, Judge Alexander Hugh Milne called his actions a "cynical and financially driven attack upon a legitimate business enterprise".

Kaye, a dual British and Israeli national, was extradited from Germany in August, 2017, under a European Arrest Warrant. That followed a joint investigation by Britannia's National Crime Agency (NCA) and Germany's federal crime bureau BKA.

The probe initially focussed on interference with the systems of Deutsche Telekom before Sherlocks expanded it when they realised it was part of the Liberian attack.

Kaye was convicted in Germany in July 2017 of attempted computer sabotage and given a 20-month sentence, suspended for three years.

Mexican authorities will meet with Central American officials to prepare for the arrival of a planned new caravan of migrants headed to the United States next week.

The head of Mexico’s immigration office, Tonatiuh Guillen, left on Wednesday on a trip to El Salvador and Honduras to meet with his counterparts and other authorities, said Interior Ministry spokesman Hector Gandini.

Mexico hopes to discourage a mass exodus from El Salvador, Guatemala and Honduras, and wants Central Americans who decide to migrate north to do so in an orderly way and through legal ports of entry.
This is shaping up to be the first serious test of AMLO’s new government and their resolve to put an end to mass illegal immigration. Just this week, Mexican officials announced that they were deploying large numbers of federal troops to nearly 300 common border crossing points in an effort to stem the tide. But if this new caravan is anywhere near the size of the last one they could easily overwhelm the border security forces.

The part I don't get is that, as we learned in college, America is the most awfulest, evilest country in the history of the world. So why are these noble brown-skinned people trying to get in? They can't all have read "The Camp of Saints".

#6  It isn't 2.0. This bullshit started with Baraq. Remember the Children's Caravan? Baraq encouraged it and then he let all those people into the country, even the MS-13 guys who claimed to be children. Separated those kiddies from their families, he did. This is Caravan 3.0 at least.

Cut off all foreign aid to all of the countries involved. Bring our ambassadors to those countries home and expel their ambassadors to our country. Hell, declare war on them. That's what they're doing to us.

This is why I was so pissed off when Nancy Pelosi claimed the other night in her rebuttal to Trump's speech that "We all recognize the need for border security." She lied bigger than shit. If that was true, there would be no caravans. If Democrats didn't encourage these caravans, they wouldn't happen. Nancy wants open borders so all of those people can walk right into this country, no questions asked.

UNHCR: More than 5,000 people leave Venezuela daily
[ELUNIVERSAL] Approximately 5,000 and 5,500 people leave Venezuela daily, bound for Colombia and other countries in the region, said the United Nations
...an organization originally established to war on dictatorships which was promptly infiltrated by dictatorships and is now held in thrall to dictatorships...
High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), which highlighted an increase in the figures in important border ports such as the Colombian of Cúcuta.

The spokesmen of the organism of the UN indicated that the average of Venezuelan migrants colonists and refugees to other countries was reduced in December with respect to previous months but it has returned to rebound.

The High Commissioner points out that the number of registered migrants colonists may not reflect the real total, since many Venezuelans cross borders irregularly and there are no official figures for departures by Venezuela, Efe reported.

The UNHCR and the International Organization for Migration (IOM) reported in 2018 that the countries of Latin America and the Caribbean host 2.4 million Venezuelan refugees and migrants colonists, while another 600,000 are distributed in other regions.

The international organizations project that in 2019 another two million Venezuelans could leave the country due to the economic and political crisis.

Leader of Venezuela opposition-run congress says prepared to assume presidency
[PRESSTV] The leader of Venezuela’s opposition-led National Assembly says he is prepared to take on the South American country’s presidency on an interim basis and call elections, only a day after socialist President Nicolas Maduro was sworn in for a disputed second mandate.

Juan Guaido, 35, a politician from the hard-line Popular Will opposition party and an arch foe of Maduro, made the remarks at an anti-government rally in front of the headquarters of the United Nations
...boodling on the grand scale...
Development Program (UNDP) in the capital Caracas on Friday.

The rally was a rare and potentially destabilizing challenge to some 20 years of Bolivarian rule, as hundreds of his energized supporters were chanting "Guaido for president!" and "Out with Maduro!"

"I assume the duty imposed by the Constitution and Article 333, which obliges all Venezuelans, vested with authority or not, to fight for the restitution of constitutional order," Guaido said, calling his strongly-worded speech as his "declaration to the Venezuelan people."

Cyber
Man gets 10 years for cyberattack on Boston Children's Hospital
[Boston.com] A man who attacked the computer network of a renowned hospital in Boston to protest the care of a teenager at the center of a high-profile custody battle was sentenced Thursday to more than 10 years in prison.

Martin Gottesfeld said he has no regrets for the cyberattacks he orchestrated on Boston Children’s Hospital and a treatment home in 2014, which cost the facilities tens of thousands of dollars and disrupted operations for days.

Gottesfeld, a self-proclaimed member of the international hacking group Anonymous who calls himself an “Obama-era political prisoner,” insists his actions weren’t criminal because he says was trying to save the life of Justina Pelletier.

The Connecticut teenager was placed in state custody in Massachusetts after her parents disputed Boston Children’s Hospital doctors’ diagnosis of their daughter.

Pelletier had previously been diagnosed with mitochondrial disease,
...by specialists at Tufts Medical Center, which is not in the habit of providing misdiagnoses...
a disorder that affects cellular energy production, but Boston Children’s Hospital diagnosed her problems as psychiatric.

The case drew national media attention and ignited a debate over parental rights. Pelletier was later returned to her parents on a judge’s order.
...over a year later, after the doctors at Boston Children’s nearly killed her by acting on their misdiagnosis. She still has not completely recovered.

The Daily Wire has the background on the Pelletier story as of last November here, and more on Mr. Gottesfeld’s story here.

#1  I found the Daily Wire's story on the Pelletier controversy very misleading. The custody battle was between Justina's parents and the Massachusetts Department of Children and Families. The power of the state was clearly misused here, and is the "elephant in the room" that was basically ignored in the article. The state of Massachusetts and its DCF was obviously the source of any violation of civil rights here.

In this video, we give you the exclusive footage just a moment after chaos erupted on the streets of Paris

Several people injured in huge gas explosion in Paris: Police

[AlAhram] Several people were maimed in a huge kaboom probably caused by a gas leak in central Gay Paree, a police source said.

The massive blast rocked buildings hundreds of metres away and blew out the entire ground floor of a building at rue Trevise, in the Grands Boulevards central Gay Paree shopping district.

Police said nine people were seriously injured.

#1  Page 3: Non-War on Terror was definitely the right call, dear Woodrow. Here’s the latest from The Times of Israel:

2 firefighters killed, dozens injured in Paris bakery explosion

Blast appears to have been caused by gas leak; authorities say 10 are in critical condition and 37 others less seriously injured?

And thank goodness it was not, after all, a bomb — whether from the yellow vests or from either native-born or recently imported jihadis.

#2  Ah, Paree! In the Rue de Trevise,
Every breeze seems to whisper, "Louise!"
But it may just be gas,
So please flee from the blast
If the breeze sez, "Jeez, who cut the cheese?"

No disrespect intended toward the casualties. Never really thought about it, but I can't recall a single person in uniform, years ago when I freewheeled around France looking not entirely unlike a bum, being anything but correct, even friendly.

Atheism grows in Turkey as Recep Tayyip Erdogan urges Islam
Iran is experiencing similar problems.
[DW] More and more Turks are turning to atheism. That could very well have to do with President Sultan Recep Tayyip Erdogan the First

According to a recent survey by the pollster Konda, a growing number of Turks identify as atheists. Konda reports that the number of nonbelievers tripled in the past 10 years. It also found that the share of Turks who say they adhere to Islam dropped from 55 percent to 51 percent.

India plans manned space mission by December 2021
[DAWN] India will send its first manned mission into space by December 2021, the head of the country's space agency said on Friday.

The three-person mission would make the Asian giant the fourth country after Russia, the United States and China to put people in space.

"We are planning to have the first unmanned mission by December 2020, the second by July 2021, and the manned mission by December 2021," Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) chairman Kailasavadivoo Sivan said in Bangalore.

Plans for a manned mission were first announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi last year, and his government has since approved around $1.4 billion to provide technology and infrastructure.

The sum would make it one of the cheapest manned space programmes in the world.

Modi, up for re-election this year, has hailed the national space programme as a prestige project and said that both men and women could be selected for the mission.

Chinatown mussel shells take revenge on Toronto sculptor
[Mail] A Toronto artist who has been sculpting with natural materials since 1991 was shocked when she learned that mussel shells she had worked with for 15 years caused her to suffer heavy-metal poisoning.

Gillian Genser, a 59-year-old sculptor based in Toronto, began using blue mussel shells in 2000 while working on the sculpture of Adam, the first man. She had made a statue of Lilith, just before, but using eggshells.

'The shells came from Atlantic Canada, and I’d buy them in bulk in Chinatown, so that I could sort through the bins and choose shells in the shapes I wanted,' she wrote in a personal essay for Toronto Life.

Saudi teen Rahaf Qunun to depart Thailand for Canada asylum: Thai immigration chief
And she lived happily ever after. The End.
[AlAhram] A Saudi woman who fled to Thailand saying she feared her family would kill her has been granted asylum in Canada and is traveling there on Friday, the Thai immigration chief told Rooters.
Rahaf Mohammed al-Qunun, 18, will board a Korean Air flight from Bangkok to Seoul on Friday night, immigration chief Surachate Hakpark said, before boarding a connecting flight to Canada.

"Canada has granted her asylum," Surachate told Rooters. "She’ll leave tonight at 11.15 p.m."

Canadian authorities said they could not confirm that Qunun had been granted asylum in Canada.

"We have nothing new to add on this right now," a front man for Canadian Foreign Minister Chrystia Freeland said.

Qunun arrived in Bangkok on Saturday and was initially denied entry but after a tense 48-hour stand-off at Bangkok airport, some of it barricaded in a transit lounge hotel room, she was allowed to enter the country and has been processed as a refugee by the United Nations
...where theory meets practice and practice loses...
Refugee Agency (UNHCR).

Qunun has accused her family of abuse, and has refused to meet her father and brother who arrived in Bangkok to try to take her back to Soddy Arabia
...a kingdom taking up the bulk of the Arabian peninsula. Its primary economic activity involves exporting oil and soaking Islamic rubes on the annual hajj pilgrimage. The country supports a large number of princes in whatcha might call princely splendor. When the oil runs out the rest of the world is going to kick sand in the Soddy national face...
Australia had said on Wednesday that it was considering taking in Qunun.
