-Lurid Crime Tales-
Okla. labor commissioner stabbed to death at ice cream shop
An apparent domestic situation.
OKLAHOMA CITY - A state politician was stabbed to death Sunday evening at a northwest Oklahoma City fast food restaurant, sources tell News 9.

Oklahoma Commissioner of Labor Mark Costello died Sunday evening after being stabbed at Braum's, 11224 N May Ave., according to sources.

Shortly after 6:30 p.m. Sunday, police were called to the Braum's in reference to a man stabbing another man inside and outside the restaurant.

Earlier in the day, two family members had a fight with one another and agreed to meet at Braum's. When the two arrived, one stabbed the other at least four times with a steak knife, police said.

The stabbing started inside the restaurant and continued into the parking lot, where other customers tried to stop the assault, police said.

The victim was taken to OU Medical Center, where he died. Police arrested the man accused in the stabbing.

Police have not disclosed the relationship between the two men, but witnesses told News 9 the men are believed to be father and son.

-Short Attention Span Theater-
California Outsources Wind Power to Mexico
.
Officials today inaugurated the first U.S.-Mexico cross-border wind farm. The $300 million wind farm, located in Tecate, Baja California, will supply energy to San Diego County, California.

The Project has an installed generation capacity of 155.1 MW and began commercial operations in June. The electricity generated by the wind farm is being purchased by SDG&E that provides service to more than 2.25 million customers in San Diego and Orange counties.

Constructed on some 13,100 acres of leased land near the city of Tecate, the project consisted of 47 wind turbines, each with a capacity of 3.3 MW, as well as the construction of a 4.8-mile transboundary, transmission line.
You knew this was coming. All the dead birds will be in Mexico. And the jobs, too

Free Climbing claims 2 lives in Teton National Park
[Daily Mail] Two women have died after falling 200ft while attempting a daring climb on a mountain in the Grand Teton National Park.

Tyler Strandberg, 27, and Catherine Nix, 28, who were both living in Jackson, Wyoming, were scaling a rocky ledge 11,500ft up when they plunged to their death.

Their friend Rebecca Anderson, 26, landed on another ledge after the fall and was rescued by park rangers after using her cell phone to call for help.

The National Park Service says the accident occurred around 11 am Saturday on the 12,300-foot Teewinot Mountain, the sixth-tallest peak in the Teton Range.

The three women were attempting to ascend the East Face of the mountain and were well off the preferred route when the two fell.
Here, use my cellie cam for the GWR shot.
The Park Service says they weren't using ropes at the time.
Humping all that extra gear is for sissies.
Anderson used her cell phone to reach the Teton Interagency Dispatch Center about 11:15 am on Saturday to report the accident.
If you're going to be stupid, you've simply got to be tough.

#6  I credit a lot of who I am today, physically and mentally, to the rock climbing I did as a youth. Its no joke, even with the safety equipment.

Hard to tell if they were stupid (getting way outside their skill set), unlucky (weather shift/wind gust), or unfortunate (risks of the activity).

I will say this - if you are 10' off the ground and are there to not die, get off the rock. You must be there to live.

It is amazing there is a survivor, and that her phone worked.

#9  swksvolFF---I am of the same opinion as of you. I did rock climbing and mountaineering since I was 7 years old. My late father got into it and he gave back in instruction to new climbers coming into the sport. We did Yosemite, the Tetons, the Cascades, the Sierra, all over. One thing that I REALLY learned was managing risk, and developing good judgment. Those skills have served me all my life.

There was a very talented Austrian climber named Hermann Buhl. He did some serious high altitude technical climbs solo. When he got to some hairy pitches, he just hung a rope on him for confidence.

Well Hermann finally fell off a solo climb and died. We kids made a song about him to the tune of the Coaster's hit, "Charley Brown"

Hermann Buhl, he's a fool
That Hermann Buhl, he's a fool
He's gonna get creamed
Just you wait and see

#10  I hit a peak at 5.6 or 5.7 depending on the grader (The Pear, Lumpy Ridge, Co). Was nice and limber then got stocky. Not bad for a flatlander.

Anyways.

Did some looking, their approach was 3 to 4 (not some path), grade G (don't have to have protection, always recommended, always have a fn' helmet) seems the biggest problem there is snow pack (bad juju) and falling rock (really bad juju, especially in popular climbs), then got off trail (something bad happens, delays response, perhaps by hours).

Group involved in Mukachevo shootout remains holed up

Rantburg.com

The leader of the Right Sector group which allegedly took part in the shootout that left four dead and 14 wounded in July 11th, said in a Ukrainian television interview that his group went to Mukachevo with the intention of negotiating with a rival group in Mukachevo, and were ambushed.

According to data supplied by korrespondent.net news website, the leader, Roman Stoika and his deputy Artur Karimov arrived at the Antares Bar and Spa on July 11th where the owner, Mikail Lano had amassed a group of about 100 armed individuals dressed in track suits and standing outside. He and Karimovwere shown inside the club for about four minutes while they were searched and offered coffee before shooting started outside.

Once outside, Stoika said he saw an unidentified man lying dead in the street, shot through the head, and that he himself was fired on or shot by a sniper. Presumably at that point he and Karimov got into their vehicles and fled the area only to run into a police checkpoint. According to Stoika, about 100 shooters were all firing.

Sometime before reaching a second police checkpoint his group escaped the shooting, and his group was again stopped by a police agent identified as S. Sharanich ordered them to surrender or be killed. As the group was being led away from the second checkpoint, firing again took place, apparently distracting S. Sharanich sufficiently the group was allowed to escape. All this time, Stoika claimed, his men were told to hold their fire.

According to an unsigned letter said to have been sent to the Ukrainian national prosecutor by Rada Verkhovna member Viktor Baloga, S. Sharanich was one of two top local police commanders who were warned about the coming shootout, along with another police official identified as CF Shymonyaka. The implication in the letter was that CF Shymonyaka and S. Sharanich actively planned the shootout including the arming of some of Lano's, men.

CF Shymonyaka, along with a local member of the Rada Verkhovna, V. Patskana, reportedly have ties to a local organized crime boss in the Transcarpathia region, identified as Shimoni. Shimoni is said to control smuggling routes for excise goods between other eastern European countries and rebel held areas of Donetsk and Lugansk.

Some Right Sector groups in eastern Ukraine have some ties to organized crime in moving excise goods into rebel held areas of southeastern Ukraine, this respite a months long war between them and Russian backed rebel forces, so intense, some Russian guerrilla groups will go out of their way to fire their weapons on Right Sector groups.

Both Roman Stoika and his deputy Artur Karimov remain holed up in western Transcarpathia along with at four other members of their group. Stoika has a warrant for his arrest for the charges of forming a terrorist group. Stoika has demanded as a condition for his surrender, the arrest of Lano and Sharanich.

According to a separate korrespondent.net report, Rada Verkhovna member Valery Patskan said that a report authored by the Poroshenko Bloc on the incident will be issued next month, but the report didn't specify the date. According to Baloga, Patskan also has reported ties to CF Shymonyaka and to Shimoni.

Ukrainians detain two artillery spotters near Mariupol

Rantburg.com

Two unidentified individuals were detained Saturday and Sunday for their alleged roles in the August 16th artillery strike on the Mariupol suburb of Sartana, according to Russian language news reports.

A news account which appeared in 06290.ua.com said that a man who was working as a lifeguard and a woman were detained in separate arrests as suspected artillery spotters for the rebels. The August 16th artillery attack killed a total of four people. On Saturday a fourth unidentified victim died of injuries she sustained in the artillery attack.

Since last week reports of artillery attacks have declined dramatically between the Ukrainian Army and their Russian backed opponents, enough so that in some cities, repairs were begun of those areas hit by artillery attacks.

Monday is Ukrainian Independence Day, and both sides have been exchanging charges that the other are planning an attack. Two days ago, the Donetsk ministry of defense disclosed documents in their possession they say gave a broad outline for a massive ground offensive. The Ukrainians have countered with charges of their own saying the rebels are planning a terrorist attack on Monday.

The Ukrainian ministry of defense said on Sunday that rebel forces fired on Ukrainian forces a total of 78 times, using artillery as well as direct fire weapons.

120mm mortars fire was reported by the Ukrainians at Avdievka and at Krasnogorovka in the Donetsk city area. In the Mariupol area, rebel forces are said to have fired on Ukrainian positions at Granitnoye.

On Saturday the Donetsk ministry of defense said that Ukrainian artillery hit rebel positions at the Donetsk airport, near Avdievka and at Spartak. Further south near Telmanovo, Ukrainian artillery hit rebel positions at Belokamenka and Starilaspa.

On Sunday Ukrainian artillery and direct fire weapons hit rebel positions at the Donetsk airport and the Donetsk city suburbs of Spartak, Opytnoye, Peski and Avidevka.

Russian military journalist, Boris Rozhin said that rebel forces have taken a key height in northwestern Lugansk, near the town of Zolotnoye near a village called Marevka. An unidentified Cossack commander said his forces advanced into the village as Ukrainian forces holding the area fled. The Ukrainians made one single attempt to counterattack, and once met with rebel counterfire in the form of BMP-2 infantry fighting vehicles, the Ukrainians withdrew.

According to Rozhin, in a separate post on Russian reserve FSB Colonel Igor Girkin's VKontakte page, Donetsk president Aleksandr Zakharcheko has left the area for Russia, the rumors for whichwere that Zakharchenko was sick.

In Russian lore, in this year old civil war, when a leader gets sent to Russia, it is similar to a "sit down" in organized crime parlance.

It is well known that the rebel leadership in Donetsk has been on the outs with their Russian benefactors since last spring.

Explosions At U.S. Military Base In Kanagawa, Japan
DEVELOPING: An explosion has been reported at the U.S. military facility in Sagamihara, Japan, the Atlanta Journal Constitution reports, citing the Japanese Broadcasting Corporation. Sagamihara is a city in the Japanese prefecture of Kanagawa, which borders Tokyo.

"Fire from the American military base has occurred," the Sagamihara Fire Department said, according to JBC.

The Sagami General Depot houses storage for petroleum products and ammunition.

Video and photos began streaming in from social media shortly after noon (EST), showing a large explosion, several loud booms, sustained flames and billowing smoke rising from a structure. No injuries have been reported.

A bare warehouse is currently burning on the site, The Daily Mirror reported, citing Japanese broadcasters. Helicopters have been spotted in the area and emergency vehicles are en route to the scene.

Three explosions linked to a left-wing extremist group were reported in the vicinity of the base in April, according to the Wall Street Journal.
Once is happenstance, twice is coincidence, thrice is enemy action? Maybe nothing, but there suddenly seems to be a lot of "eyecatchiness" going on around Asia of late.

Home Front: Culture Wars
Planned Parenthood uses ultrasonic weapons (USW) to blast protestors
[PJ Media] I went to the Planned Parenthood protest in Aurora, IL, on August 22, 2015, and while the huge crowd was heartening, something happened that I still can't believe. Recently I wrote about the lame "Funny or Die" video that made fun of our outrage over Planned Parenthood tearing babies limb from limb and selling the parts to the highest bidder. But those are comedians, so we expect them to be crass and outrageous. What we don't expect is for Planned Parenthood, whose representatives have been caught gorging themselves on salad and wine while they talk about crushing the bodies of the unborn for profit, to join in on the merrymaking. One would think they would be sobered by the scandal. One would think they would be careful not to seem callous or ghoulish in the face of accusations of crimes against humanity that have been likened to slavery, cannibalism, and the Holocaust.

One would be wrong.

While standing within the sound of priests and monks praying the rosary in calming rhythm, another sound came out of the abortion mill in front of us, this one hellish. Planned Parenthood piped discordant, eerie horror music out of speakers hidden somewhere on the building (leading me to surmise they had them installed when the place was built for just an occasion like this!).

This is their idea of a sick joke.

We know they are delivering live, whole babies (who are kicking!) and cutting their faces off to extract brains -- and they know WE know it. So what do they do? They broadcast their depravity in surround sound. Horror-movie madness is what this is. When will thinking people stand up and see the horror show Planned Parenthood really is? They know they're killing babies. You know they're killing babies. The difference is they think it's funny.

#1  really and truly, the videos put out about the alleged crimes of PP were exaggerated and misleading. so is this. they are not delivering live whole babies and cutting their faces off.

that is just not true. a fetus less than three months old is just that - a fetus. its not a baby or a human being. if you want to be extreme about it, every sperm is a human being in waiting, and every day thousands of sperm die.

and stem cell research is totally acceptable. Christopher Reeves was a big campaigner for it.

so if they are blasting irrational protesters with loud sounds, good. carry on, i say.

#2  anon1 - Love how the word "alleged" is used in spite of what the videos contained (You did watch them, right?). A sperm is 1/2 the equation, as are the eggs lost to menses. Once combined, however, life, of whatever level you wish to define it, has begun and, in most cases, without the use of scalpels, vacuums, etc. could go on to develop into someone you could look up to.

"Fetuses" are not necessary for stem-cell research. You should really check out the "libary" before spouting.

Just because your mom cracks the door to the basement you live in does not mean you are enlightened.

#10  Anon1 - basic science proves you wrong.

Do you agree that we as a society protect those who cannot give consent - for instance, if a girl is drunk enough then she loses the ability to consent? Or if someone is underage, they do not have the capacity to give consent for srugery, or for legal documents - or to have sex (statutory rape laws, laws agains paedophile acts)?

Good, glad we agree, we believe there must be laws to deter those who would take advantage of the defenseless.

What about the innocent? Do we execute someone for a crime when they were mentally incoimpetent - incapable of forming "mens rea" - that is intent to commit a criminal act? Well of cours e- we make laws for that, we allow those defenses against criminal charges, and the concept of legal innocence requires that we protect the innocent, -- and indeed we presume people to be innocent by default in our legal system.

Now in war, or police actions, or even civilian police, do we go to extra lengths to avoid hurting or killing people by accident, jsut because they are in our way - we look for alternatives even when they inconvenience us or add to risk for our soldier's and police officer's lives. Heck, even our property laws prevent us from doing things the easy way just for the convenience of someone else: look at eminent domain, and how it protects individuals against such things.

So, from all that, you can jsutly draw the conclusion that we, as a society, protect the innocent and defenseless amongst us - and we value human life and go out of our way to accommodate it or protect it, even if it puts us at greater risk or inconvenience to do so.

Here the science pat:

it the conceived "fetus" in the wou,b alive? Is it life? Yes. It meets the fundamental biological definition of life.

Is it human? Of course - Science says via biology it can be nothing other than human.

Is it innocent? Certainly, speaking legally, it is - it is too young to have mens rea. Is it defenseless? Again, its the very definition of defenseless - it cannot consent nor can it resist.

Pro Choice? What exactly are you allowing as one of the choices? Elective abortion.

So what does elective abortion do?

It is the deliberate destruction of a defenseless, innocent human life, for the convenience or profit of another.

And we as a society have every right to pass laws to outlaw it as we would any other form of deliberate destruction of innocent defenseless human life. You have no more "right" to choose to take such an abhorrent moral action than does any murderer.

And there you have it. Basic logic and fundamental biology.

Two words for you and your ilk: you lose.

#11  i have read and thought about what you have all said.

A first trimester fetus is not a human being, and should not be considered one either.

It is not a human being in the sense that an adult in a coma who cannot make decisions for themselves is a human being, or in the sense that a mentally retarded but living human being is a human being.

A first trimester fetus is a *potential* human being, not an actual human being.

Spontaneous abortions, usually called miscarriages, are common in the first trimester. This is why it is traditional for people to say nothing about being pregnant until after the first trimester - to wait and see if it is actually going to stick first.

We do not call these spontaneous miscarriages tragedies or still births. The fetus that is expelled is not considered a baby and should not be.

It is not capable of independent life. It does not have a functioning brain.

The vestigial tail does not begin regressing until 8 weeks.

At 12 weeks it is only 6cm long. It is a fetus. If you leave it in the womb and it doesnt get expelled then it will become a baby

If you expel it naturally or through taking RU486 then it wont become a baby.

The people who are attacking planned parenthood are the same people who oppose first trimester abortions.

They do so not because of science or because of ethics.

They do so because they are deeply religious and believe that their deity told them to.

i do not think that this is a good enough reason to deny women access to first trimester abortions, especially in cases of rape such as that 12 year old girl forced to have a baby. That is unethical.

We will just have to agree to disagree and we do so on religious grounds.

I prefer science and observational ethics that improve human rights instead of divinely mandated ethics that do not improve them.

People will always disagree on some issues yet agree on others, usually on faith-based areas most of all which was why Thomas Jefferson was a genius to draft the first amendment guaranteeing a wall of separation between religion and state.
