#1 Mariupol is the first key road nexus and city between Rostove (major Russian military HQ) and an overland supply route to Russian occupied/controlled Crimea.

Geographically it's of value to any advance in SE Ukraine.

#2 There was a lot of fighting there in WWII. I wonder if any old bunkers and trenches have been dusted off for re-use.
