I knocked together Page Two this morning. Presently it looks like the WoT Index page, only with the inverse set of articles. After I've made it look a lot more like the front page, I'm going to move non-WoT items there, rather than having them display up front. Then I'll have to teach the headlines to look for the appropriate page...
There were lots of good ideas in last night's discussion. If you have more suggestions, post them here. I'm still digesting them, so be patient. One idea was to have only one "Africa" category, but I think we need an Africa: North and an Africa: Subsaharan category, and maybe an Africa: Horn. I'd like to have Home Front: Politix, Home Front: Culture Wars, and Home Front: WoT categories, too, but at the same time I don't want to end up with 150 separate categories. Too hard to keep track of. So keep thinking...

I'm liking the new-and-improved Rantburg a lot.
Some things, though:
It's running wide on my screen. I have to scroll right to see everything over there. Is it just me/my monitor that's the problem?
Loading awfully slow today. Just because of the under-the-hood tinkering?
Instead of the Page Two link being in that little yellow box I never look at, why not make a prominent link at the top of Page One, under the Rantburg logo?
Change "Post a news link" to "Post a news link on Page Two." Makes it clearer to newbies and stupid people.
I liked the category listings separating all the headlines at the top of Page One. Anyone else miss them?
And I completely agree with whomever it was who proposed displaying the last three or so comments on the main screen, to make it easier for those who visit more than once a day to see if the discussion had continued along interesting lines.
All that said, I love Rantburg. I read LGF every day, but the comments section has grown overwhelming. Here, for now at least, it's not. And what commentary there is, it's smart and funny. And I can't think of another site that regularly brings me so much info about the world at large. So, thanks, Fred.

To extend my comment you could delete the popup article link from the index entirely and have that link from the comments listing instead (putting in "---" for comment-free articles maybe)... Saving a bit of horizontal space.
I also like growler's Page 2 suggestions. (Is Rantburg turning into espn.com?)

I like having the comment count (or ---) be the quick link - it makes the lines more 'compact'.
Any chance of being able to sort by ascending last-comment-time by clicking on the 'Cmnts (Latest)' heading? Just a thought. Could change back by clicking on the Headline colum heading....
How do you post something directly to page 2? (perhaps that isn't done yet).

I've been screwing with a sort routine for awhile. It works on another site I maintain (for work), but refuses to do anything but expend CPU cycles on Rantburg. I'll eventually discover what's hose and get it working...
At the moment, I make the page 1/page 2 assignments myself. Naked headlines default to page 2, articles default to page 1. I'm planning on putting the choice on the guest poster page.

I just realized something problematic with the Africa categories. News about the Sudan could conceivably fit into all three categories, depending on who they're invading (or sending the LRA against, which may be roughly the same thing) that particular week.

I submit (heh) that Front Page / Back Page are better names. And I'm sure there are others which might be better or different categorical breakdowns (e.g. Breaking News / Analysis (Deep Thoughts!) / SAST actually works best for me)

Yeah, but what about when we go to three pages, or four? I'm thinking about putting only the most recent posts on the main page, say, the latest dozen or so, with the full display on page 1 and page 2. That'd reduce page load times nicely, and having the split between WoT/non-WoT would keep the other pages loading (relatively) fast. Today we've got 42 WoT articles, out of a total of 72. The page will load a lot faster with 42 than it will having to pull all 72, plus five hundred and some comments.
BTW, I've changed the posting categories, trying to be logical. Hope they're not too confusing until we get used to them...
I dunno about "contests." I never signed up for coffee cups and tee-shirts and that sort of stuff, so I don't have anything to hand out.

A minor tidbit. I notice someone new posted an article by posting it as a news article (which only shows the link and headline) and then attaching the meat of the article as a 'comment'. Might want to have some verbage on the posting pages describing when to use which. Or perhaps a 'how to post articles' page :-) to help newbies....

Officials at the Alameda County Coronerâs office are having a difficult time moving the body of a 700-pound Oakland man, who died of natural causes Tuesday night, according to coronerâs spokesman Dan Apperson. Apperson said officials had to use a crane to remove the manâs body from his home at 18th and West streets. His body remains inside the coronerâs van because they cannot get the large corpse out, Apperson said. Officials are trying to make arrangements to transport the man, whose identity has not yet been released, directly to a mortuary, Apperson said. As an EMT, this is a terrible issue. Weâre buying new stair chairs in order to be able to attempt to carry our 300 lb. patients. These chairs have a set of tracks that rest on the stairs, helping to absorb some of the weight load. Rural Metro locally has a "Fatmobile" which is designed to transport the big ones. It has a ramp into the back, an appliance dolly and no gurney. In Seattle, I believe, their "Fatmobile" actually has a winch in the back to crank the patient up the ramp. Iâve used as many as six people to lift a patient into my ambulance on our gurney. And he got stuck between the side rails of the gurney because so much of him oozed over the edge. Getting him off the gurney at the emergency department was tough.

I'm with ya', Chuck. We've had to call the fire department (2 engines or a ladder truck, in some cases) more than once both to get them out of the house and to unload at the hospital. And God help us if they're on the second floor.
The stretchers won't hold more than 500 pounds, and shouldn't hold that much. It's a real problem, and grossly obese people are more likely to have major medical problems, so are more likely to call us than to go to the hospital by private vehicle.
I'm overweight myself, but that's just ridiculous.

The government of President Hugo Chavez said Wednesday it will file a complaint with the Organization of American States, accusing the United States of meddling in Venezuela's domestic affairs. Venezuela's ambassador to the OAS, Jorge Valero, said he plans to present proof that Washington has given financial and logistical support to opposition groups pushing for Chavez's ouster. Dutch Politicians Want Bestiality Banned
Two Dutch political parties called Wednesday for laws prohibiting sex with animals after a man suspected of having sex with a pony was set free. Letâs see, how did that Brandmeier song go?? Wearing nothing but a T-shirt, the man was arrested by police in Utrecht Monday after the ponyâs owner caught him by surprise in his stable. "He was caught in the stable, busy with the pony, and was arrested for animal mistreatment," Mary Hallebeek, a prosecution spokeswoman said. The prosecutor set him free because there was no evidence of a crime. Dutch law does not prohibit bestiality.

"There were no wounds or traces of violence. The man may have had sex with the animal, but there is no article in law which says this is liable to punishment," Hallebeek said. German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder's decision not to talk to the country's top-selling daily newspaper has fueled a press revolt, a major reversal for a leader who reportedly once said that the newspaper and television were just about all he needed to govern. Schroeder's retribution for the Bild newspaper's allegedly unfair reporting has united influential media against him with demands he treat the paper fairly. On Wednesday, a group representing the national press corps in the capital protested.
Gerhard's on a roll in not doing anything right.
Schroeder spokesman Bela Anda, himself a former Bild reporter and author of a sympathetic Schroeder biography, said last week that the chancellor would no longer talk to the paper because of its "mixture of malice, rabble-rousing, disdain for its subjects, and half-truths." That contrasts with Schroeder's early days, when his stylish, media-savvy presence provided a counterpoint to 16 years of the staid and steady Helmut Kohl.
Perhaps there's something to be said for "staid and steady"?
When he came into office in 1998, Schroeder actively courted certain journalists and was reported as saying he wanted to govern through television as well as Bild - known for its bright colors, screaming headlines and influence among Germany's blue-collar voters - and the paper's Bild am Sonntag Sunday edition. Schroeder has been less critical of the more feature-heavy Sunday edition. Schroeder has a record of suing newspapers for coverage he deemed unfair - once for reporting rumors of marital troubles, and once in a successful attempt to quash suggestions that he dyes his hair, a contention that gave fodder to political foes eager to portray Schroeder as more style than substance. "He's fighting the system that made him great," the Sueddeutsche Zeitung newspaper commented this week.

Schroeder's move prompted a letter from editors of several major newspapers last week accusing the government of "putting the freedom of the press in question." "We'd never had that before in Germany," Wolfgang Stock, the head of the German media think tank Media Tenor told the Associated Press. Representatives of the national press corps in Berlin said it also raised allegations that Schroeder's press office explicitly barred Bild reporters from his international trips. We'll pre-challenge if necessary." Just to be on the safe side, Sen. Kerry might want to get his "pre-concession" speech ready as well.

This wasnât a headline in any big media story so donât expect the link to work.
Dennis (the angry dwarf) Kucinichâs campaign took a beating earlier this week. In all four 3/9 primary States, he was beaten not only by Kerry but by Edwards and Dean (whose campaigns have been suspended). He was also beaten by Al Sharpton in Florida, Mississippi and Lousiana
(I would have said decisively beaten because the ratio of Sharpton to Kucinich votes was about 2 to 1 but Sharpton didnât exceed 5% so âdecisivelyâ seems the wrong word).
Things had been going well for Kucinich when a recount of the Hawaii caucus actually gave him 40% of the votes. For those of you who are really curious, Kucinichâs web site is: http://www.kucinich.us/

WASHINGTON -- Republicans demanded an apology from Democratic presidential candidate John Kerry for comments they criticized as "unbecoming of a candidate for the presidency."
Kerry created a stir Wednesday in Chicago after he spoke via satellite to labor leaders meeting in Florida. When a supporter urged him to take on Bush, Kerry said, into a still-open microphone: "Let me tell you, weâve just begun to fight. Weâre going to keep pounding. These guys are the most crooked, you know, lying group Iâve ever seen. Itâs scary."
President Bushâs re-election campaign demanded an apology for "this negative attack."
"Senator Kerryâs statement today in Illinois was unbecoming of a candidate for the presidency of the United States of America, and tonight we call on Senator Kerry to apologize to the American people for this negative attack," campaign chairman Marc Racicot said in a statement. "On the day that Senator Kerry emerged as his partyâs presumptive nominee, the president called to congratulate him. That goodwill gesture has been met by attacks and false statements."
The Kerry camp tried to explain the remark by suggesting it was not, precisely, about Bush himself, but rather about GOP critics of the senator in general.
??This is language you don?t ordinarily use in public,?? said Kathleen Hall Jamieson, an authority on campaign rhetoric with the Annenberg Public Policy Center.
Kerry spokeswoman Stephanie Cutter said Republicans have a record of smearing their opponents and that Kerry intended the comment to show that he will fight back.
"Four years ago, John Kerry saw what the Republican attack machine did to John McCain. Two years ago, he saw what it did to Max Cleland," Cutter said, recalling the Arizona senator who challenged Bush for the GOP presidential nomination in 2000 and the Georgia Democratic senator turned out of office in 2002. "What he was saying is heâs not going to take it." The Jackass Party Candidate has obviously adopted Dubyaâs pre-emptive attack policy - heâs just confused as to who is the real enemy. To quote Stephen den Beste: "I want to know what he really stands for. (And it better not be E Pluribus, UN.) ... I donât know what Kerry stands for, and Iâm not sure thereâs any way for me to learn what it is, or to believe that Iâve discovered it. Iâm not completely convinced Kerry stands for anything, except that heâs standing for election."

I want to bitch slap the next person that whines about the attack ads on Cleland and McCain. They were not attack ads they just presented their records in the Senate. McCain really should evaluate which side he is on and quit with on again/off again love affair with the Dems. And Cleland is starting believe that he is something he is not (a great legislator). He also comes off as a full fleged nutball! I guess that makes him a mainstream Democrat.

Nothing says you have to like Kerry but he simply stated a truth about the party that made attack politics a fine art, and that is all the administration has going for it this year.
Why should you administration supporters be so worried anyway? If it turns out that Kerry is going over the line he'll be punished come November when it really matters.

That is pretty lame stuff, y'know. No one is clean and mud-free, agreed. But in this election season the Dems have been the attackers - for months. It's hysterically funny to hear them screech about Bush, since he's been taking it on the chin all this time - without responding in kind by any stretch of the imagination.
I assume you are not in the US. I don't know if you're American. If you are, I hope you get yourself an absentee ballot and participate. One thing seems clear, however - you are not seeing the campaign coverage I'm seeing, or you're being a disingenuous ass baiting people for a fight. Thank you so very very very much for your input.

I don't think demanding an apology would be an effective technique.
Too many individuals/groups are quick to demand apologies when they feel the least bit slighted. I'd have simply stated that Kerry's comments have been noted and filed away for future reference, and said nothing more. If Kerry wants to issue an apology on his own, fine. If not, then he has no complaint when the counterpunch comes.

The business about lying is one thing. Misrepresentations occur all the time. However, the 'crooked' allegation is something else. The Bush administration has been essentially completely clean of financial misconduct. I would think a few liberals ought to realize this and point it out to Mr. Kerry.

If I was on Bush's team, I would have simply dug out Kerry's statement from last week where Kerry made an offer of no negative campaigning and, by making that 'liars' charge, Kerry has simply flip-flopped one more time.

This is a reasonable response from the Bush team. Kerry too oten is getting a free pass from the mainstream press. By raising the issue, they have forced the press to actually repeat what Kerry said to generate the complaint, which is all the highlight they need.

From where I sit, Kerry is getting a daily free pass by saying something outlandish, then getting free media to report it, which keeps him in the papers and not diminishing his smallish warchest.
If the President gets up and takes a dump today, Kerry will come out and labast him for spending too much time in the bathroom, "while union toilet paper jobs get outsourced to Canadians".
He will run out of potshots about mid-May, I suspect and will have to start recyling them.
His handlers must stay up late working on tomorrows meme.

American troops serving in designated combat zones in support of the war against terrorism continue to get a tax break from Uncle Sam. Depending upon rank, eligible service members can exclude from federal income tax either all or some of their active duty pay â and certain other pays â earned in any month during service in a designated combat zone. The Internal Revenue Serviceâs Armed Forcesâ Tax Guide for 2003 says "a combat zone is any area the president of the United States designates by executive order as an area in which the U.S. armed forces are engaging or have engaged in combat." Service members who serve one or more days in a designated combat zone are entitled to federal tax exclusion benefits for that entire month, according to the IRS. Current designated combat zones include, Afghanistan, Iraq and other specified parts of the Persian Gulf region -- to include Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Oman, Bahrain, Qatar and the United Arab Emirates â and parts of the Kosovo area.

Fortunately, Saddam appears to have been a stickler for record-keeping.
A letter has come to The Wall Street Journal supporting allegations that among those favored by Saddam with gifts of oil was Benon Sevan, director of the U.N.âs Oil-for-Food Program. As detailed on this page on Feb. 9, Mr. Sevanâs name appears on a list of individuals, companies and organizations that allegedly received oil allocations or vouchers from Saddam that could then be sold via middlemen for a significant markup. The list, compiled in Arabic from documents uncovered in Iraqâs oil ministry, included many of Saddamâs nearest and dearest from some 50 countries, including the PLO, pro-Saddam British MP George Galloway, and French politician Charles Pasqua. (Messrs. Galloway and Pasqua have denied receiving anything from Saddam.) According to the list, first published by the Iraqi daily Al Mada in January, Mr. Sevan was another beneficiary, via a company in Panama known as Africa Middle East Petroleum, Co. Ltd. (AMEP), about which we have learned quite a bit.
Mr. Sevan, through a U.N. spokesperson, has also denied the allegation. But the letter, which two separate sources familiar with its origins say was recovered from Iraqi Oil Ministry files, raises new questions about Mr. Sevanâs relationship with Iraqi authorities.
Thereâs a lot of detail in the article--detail at the mine-eyes-are-glazing-over level--about Panamanian shell companies and interlocking directorates and cozy relationships between Mr. Sevan and various shady characters. It sure looks like a lot of people at least associated with the UN were on Saddamâs payroll--which more than explains the reluctance of that body to sign on to regime change.

A peaceful student sit-in protesting the emigration of young Lebanese because of political corruption turned violent on Wednesday when a mass of security forces descended upon the demonstrators at the Saint Joseph University (USJ) in Achrafieh. The students were beaten with rifle butts, three were arrested, and several injured, including Sami Gemayel, former President Amin Gemayelâs son. Organized by USJ students, including the Phalange Party-opposition wing, the Lebanese Forces and the National Liberal Party, the midday protest attracted about 100 students and at least double that number of security forces.
Hadi and Shadi Abdel-Nour and Joe Saber, all three supporters of the Free Patriotic Movement (FPM), were arrested and then released. Although the FPM was not one of the organizers of the protest, they joined in when they saw their peers suppressed. âWe were not part of the protest,â said George Sarrouh, an FPM student representative. âBut when the problems started, we could not sit on the sidelines and watch our fellow students being beaten up for nothing.â
âThe repression of our most basic freedom, the freedom to demonstrate, which is guaranteed by our Lebanese Constitution and all the international conventions, is becoming a common practice by the regimeâ, said Roland Khoury, the FPMâs student coordinator. Hayyan Bourji, a second-year business management student, said Gemayel was beaten up by Internal Security Forces as were most of the demonstrating students. Bourji said students were planning to head to the Museum area and the Cabinet headquarters, but security forces surrounded the campus and blocked off all exits. âThey feared that this peaceful manifestation of ours might turn into a protest against the Syrian presence in Lebanon and Syria itself,â he added.
Bourji said banners denounced government policies that drive young people to emigrate. âMany students were hurt and some were injured,â said Bourji. When the violence set in the students broke up, and some tried to go home. The army intelligence with the help of ISF personnel caught them and gave them another round of severe beatings said Bourji. âThey said they had photos of all of the protesters, which is all a lie. Many innocent bystanders were dragged to the other parking lot and hit under that argument. I was beaten up twice and the last to be hit too.â
The ISF issued a statement, accusing demonstrators of provoking them and throwing stones, sticks and empty bottles, leaving three officers and five soldiers injured. The statement also accused students of promoting anti-Syrian and anti-government slogans. Members of the Qornet Shehwan Gathering and the Democratic Forum strongly condemned the oppression.

The woman charged with working for the Iraqi spy agency is a distant cousin of President Bushâs chief of staff, Andrew Card, and has held a variety of jobs in journalism and on Capitol Hill. Susan Lindauer, 41, worked in the press offices of four Democratic members of Congress. She also worked for Fortune magazine, U.S. News & World Report, the Seattle Post-Intelligencer and Fox News. Her father, John Lindauer, was the Republican nominee for governor in Alaska in 1998. His campaign unraveled because of charges of campaign finance violations to which he pleaded no contest.
Susan Lindauer is a 1985 Smith College graduate who describes herself as an anti-war activist. Gary Gambill, editor of the Middle East Intelligence Bulletin, an online publication dealing with Arab politics, said Lindauer sent him a copy of her 1998 deposition in litigation related to the December 1988 bombing of Pan Am Flight 103 over Lockerbie, Scotland. In the deposition, she said Libyan officials had been wrongly accused of orchestrating the bombing and that Libya was entitled to "financial compensation for the economic harassment her people have endured because of these blatantly false accusations." He said her arrest "raises questions about the validity of her deposition and its apparent attempt to exonerate Libya." (snip)

A lift fitting must be attached to a missile before it?s hoisted up and out of the submarine silo. The tube hatch is opened, an access ladder affixed inside the silo above the nosecone. A sailor climbs down the ladder, attaches the lift fitting to the ICBM, then after connecting the hoist to the lift fitting, climbs back up on deck. The access ladder must be removed from above the nosecone before the missile is lifted skyward. On Nov. 7 2003, it wasn?t. Which means Seaman Dumbjohn was NOT following technical data.
The handling crew took a break after making the bird in tube #16 ready for lift, leaving the access ladder in place. The sailors returned and began the hoist. The missile was lifted into the ladder slicing a large hole in the nosecone. The lift was stopped a instant before warhead impact.
SWFPAC failed a weeklong nuclear weapons acceptance inspection (NWAI), ending Dec. 16, 2003, attempting new certification after corrective measures were implemented. Capt. Lehman led the 40-man inspection team. Now this does bother me a bit, because it indicates that there was a certain lack of focus at Bangor.SWFPAC passed its second NWAI on Jan. 9, 2004 ending a 9-week shut down of the nuclear weapons handling facility. Seen that happen too - in Strategic Air command, no less.
Navy seniors have issued a gag order to all military and civilian personnel familiar with the accident that threatens court-martial or other federal punitive action if violated. This guy seems to enjoy making news out of the obvious. Remember - we neither confirm nor deny the presence...
Prevailing winds that day blew at 5 to 10 mph over courthouses in Kitsap, Mason, and Thurston counties, and over the state house and government campus in Olympia. Also downwind the Belfair, WA. home of Congressman Norm Dicks. And if the weapon had been punctured - unlikely becxause of the design and strength of the reentry vehicle - a fire was NOT a sure thing, and for that matter neither wasan spillage of the weapon material. And if both of those had occurred, all they would have had to do was close the hatch. Of course, that woulldn?t have made for such a spooky story...
Okay - I get the impression that there definitely was some kind of screwup at Bangor last November. Because of the time lag between the accident and the relief of the leadership there, I think that the USN didn?t initally believe the problem was any more than an isolated accident. However, after they dropped the base recert, that tells me they had a senior leadership that wasn?t paying attention to the details. This was not, however, some indication that our weapons are being batted aroudn like softballs.
It also needs to be noted that the gentleman who runs jaghunters has some personal beefs with the USN - the P-I article goes into more detail on that.

Even if the warhead was impacted, nothing would have happened. Its not like theres a chunk of glowing plutonium duct-taped to the top. Its encased. At worst there would have been a localized spill in the tube - so they'd cap off the tube and then clean it up.

I am not a nuclear weapons expert! Having said that I have heard that in order for one of these babies to BOOM the thing has to be armed. A rupture of the missile might cause an explosion but probably would make the warhead reach critical mass. You have to remember that these are designed to re-enter the earths atmosphere.

It took seven moving companies the better part of a month to handle all the "personnel changes" that took place. John D. Jr. was a popular young officer. His brother, Mike, was my Flight Commander at the Academy in 1964. Both nice guys!
Accidents happen. I've spent several long nights looking for crash sites. When it's truly an accident, the military works like hell to make sure it never happens again, if that's possible. When it's an accident due to human carelessness (i.e., this case), the careless humans are removed. Sounds like that system is still in place, and still working.

Where was the Weapons Officer (typically a 2nd tour O-3 or O-4 department head), the Assistant Weapons Officer (a first tour 0-2 or 0-3) and the Missile Division Chief Petty Officer (typically a 10 or more patrol enlisted veteran)? Those 3 guys are in charge of the safe execution of the evolution. They don't do the work, they exist to stare at what is happening and intervene. Never mind the Weapons Facility weenies, ship's force is in charge of the evolution while the weapon is on board, the above 3 should get relieved as well as the ship's commanding officer, executive officer and the ship's duty officer. I made 5 SSBN patrols. I was never a weaponeer, but as Ship's Duty Officer, I looked for the 3 top weaponeer's to be in Hard Hats glued to the evolution. This is not an airplane taking off and crashing. It is a controlled evolution in port. There is no justification for the error. Also, boomers are kept in port for failing inspections, be they nuclear weapons inspections or Operational Reactor Safeguards Evaluations, both of which are VERY easy to fail. A boat or two can be expected to fail an ORSE every year. A mistake on certain supporting paperwork, let alone operational performance, rates a failing grade. The boats already at sea or ready for sea pick up the slack. A Weapons Handling Facilty is another matter, I don't know how they would go about picking up the slack if they "lose their keys".

The Georgia seems to be a bit of a Bug Boat. She is famous in the submarine force for sinking a tug boat during a personnel transfer in calm open ocean off Midway. The whole thing was captured on tape and is shown to aspiring ship drivers as a cautionary tale. During the evolution the ship maintains course and speed while the tug nudges against the boat amidships. The tug maintains contact while the people jump across. The tug in this case lost power and started sliding aft along the hull. The Officer of the Deck did not notice or was indecisive. He did not order any action. Ohio class boomers have vertical stabilizers on the end of the stern planes. The stabilizer penetrated the tug engine space and the two boats became one as the tug flooded. Everyone might have survivied except the OOD lost his mind at this point and ordered a backing bell. When the Georgia began backing, the drag of the tug slipped the tug off the stabilizer and she proceeded to sink...fast. 3 men died. The last words recorded by someone on the Georgia'a bridge were, "Crap, there goes the mail." S*** happens. Live and learn.

I have been reading the Iraqi Constitution which was signed on Monday. It is not perfect by any means; there are aspects of it would could conceivably lead to trouble later. But taken as a whole I think it is an astounding piece of work, subtle and powerful and extremely well crafted.
There are always challenges facing any group engaged in writing a constitution. In the case of the US framers working in Philadelphia in 1787, one of the most important was big-state/small-state. How would seats in the legislature be allocated? If they were proportional to population, small states feared becoming vassals of the large states, unable to influence the government. But if seats were allocated equally per state, citizens in big states would quite naturally feel resentment at having their votes diluted.
This is an example of two natural risks facing any democratic system, which are known as the tyranny of the majority and the tyranny of the minority. If the system goes all the way and gives full power to majority rule, then the majority may use the system to seriously infringe the rights of dissenting minorities, whether they be ethnic, religious, political or life-style. On the other hand, if the system goes too far in the direction of giving such minorities the ability to block governmental action, they can gain the power to extort concessions from the majority by paralyzing the system if they donât get what they want. Finding a balance between these two has always been difficult, and there is no ideal solution. . . .

For people curious to know, the Sun has the largest readership of any UK newspaper, and by some considerable margin. It's a right-of centre tabloid. The Mail has the largest circulation for a mid-market rag, and its reportage, too, is considered right-of centre. The Telegraph (to some, 'Torygaph') likewise has a convincing lead over its competing broadsheets, and is only challenged at all (in sales terms) by the generally reliable Times. The Guardian and, even more wacko Independent, trail distantly.
Worth bearing in mind every now and then when you get enraged by the liberal media - those Brits who want to know what's going on generally choose to read accurate (aka "right wing") reporting, whilst those who don't usually live in fantasy worlds, and go on ignorance marches every now and then. Unfortunately, there's a lot of the latter group. Sad, but true.

The backers of Air America announced their programming lineup on Wednesday and said they planned to launch the network on March 31 in New York, Los Angeles, Chicago and San Francisco. Bostonâs not on there? Thank you, God!
Franken will be joined by fellow TV comedian Janeane Garofalo, both of whom will have co-hosts for their live three-hour shows. Great. Janeane can give away straight razors so you can slit your wrists while you listen to her. Sounds like her unemployment has just about run out...
And they claim the economy isn't improving ...
Other shows will be hosted by Randi Rhodes, a radio personality from southern Florida, and Lizz Winstead, a co-creater of "The Daily Show" on Comedy Central. They just keep rolling out the firepower. Speaking of which, whatever happened to the Ed Schultz Phenomenon?
Franken, in a swipe at Fox News host Bill OâReilly, plans to call his midday show "The OâFranken Factor." Hereâs a suggestion: "Shithead Speaks".
"Bill, I want you to sue us," Franken said on a conference call with reporters, referring to a case last year in which a judge threw out OâReillyâs request to ban Franken from using the slogan "Fair and Balanced" on the cover of his book. The ruling turned into a bonanza of publicity for Franken. However, it seems unlikely another lawsuit is in the offing. Asked to respond to Frankenâs remarks, Robert Zimmerman, a spokesman for Fox News said: "All forms of free speech are welcomed in this country. We wish them well." He then he pulled his jacket over his head as he convulsed in laughter.
Franken, who has signed a one-year contract with the network, made it clear that he intends to use his pulpit to pillory President Bush in the run-up to the election. Well,...no shit???

Mark Walsh, the CEO of Progress Media Inc., the company backing the network, said they have yet to sign any firm deals with advertisers but that several subsidiaries of the Tides Foundation nonprofit organizations and progressive groups have promised to advertise. Yeah, go where the money is. Them nonprofits really toss around the bucks. Will that Soros idiot even give them any money?
He said the company hoped to raise "upward of $30 million" by the time the network goes live, which would allow them to operate for about 2 years before turning a profit. He declined to say how much they had raised so far, but he said "we are well on our way" to reaching the goal. Care to show us some numbers? Of course you donât...

Reactions to the new network were mixed. Richard Cotter, the senior buyer of local broadcast advertising for MindShare Inc., says Air America could be a "refreshing alternative for listeners," but cautioned that "you never know until it goes on the air." Robert Unmacht of In3 Partners, a media consulting firm in Nashville, Tenn., said Air Americaâs initial array of stations was "Weak.Theyâve been far more interested in the thought of creating the network than in the actual business end of it," Unmacht said. "You need to run a complete radio station. You canât just say hey, weâre liberal, isnât that great." Hey! Isnât that the way it oughta be?
Walsh acknowledged that the starting base for the network was small, though positioned in key markets. "We donât expect to get giant numbers right away. This is one brick at a time." Hope Mr. Walsh has a nice severance package already written into his deal.
Ironically, the name the liberal radio network has chosen for itself bears a close resemblance to "Air America," a covert CIA operation in Laos during the Vietnam War. Franken joked with reporters that the radio network was also being funded by the CIA. HA-HA-HA. Alâs a friggin hoot!

If you are going to have a successful talk show, you are going to need substance, and a steady diet of "hate Bush" is going to get old pretty quick.
You will also need people who have "been and done" things in real life, who bring a range of professional experiences and wisdom to the forum. We all love comedians, but a steady diet of them will turn off the audiences.
Their effort is just another front for "Bush bashing" and the dems are willing to pay millions for it. Think of the good that people could do with that kind of a fortune. *sigh*

I see this radio network as a failing proposition. It is one thing to get money from leftist institutions and to combine it with government subsidies, (so you can be all happy talking about raising everyone's taxes, and creating good jobs for good leftists ) but they are talking about an essentially socialist inspired network.
Sure, the John P and Catherine T MacCarthur Foundation et al will throw them a few bucks for the hosts saying the right things, but the basis for talk radio, commercial/private advertising will not be there in enough totals to support socialist radio in the long run.
Some companies, such as media companies, will initally buy into some advertising but at some point the CEOs of these companies know they will have to explain to their shareholders to explain the benefits of supporting leftist radio.
Oh well. It's the lefties' money to waste I suppose.

This will endear them to the faithful 100 who will tune in each and every time they go on air. It will fall on its ass, otherwise. Hate is a powerful emotion, but it burns bright and burns out. Personally, I see this as a Deaniac phenom and will last about as long.
Personally, I think stealing the name 'Air America' demonstrates they have nothing original to offer and is, actually, rather offensive... and proves how stupid they are. Does anyone here figure it's a good idea to screw around with the people who served in the REAL Air America project? Uh, if I'm not mistaken, they were very resourceful and very unconventional. Self-starters, you might say, heh. Some night when this show is on the air don't be terribly surprised if it suddenly goes *boom* and then all you hear is empty air or static... Here in SF there are three "news" talk radio stations. Two are totally conservative. The third has two extremely liberal hosts. One is on at 10 p.m. the other is on at 1 a.m. I don't think that's an accident.
The most popular show is Rush's. And Savage isn't far behind, in fact, he was long the leader...in the Bay Area.
Another interesting thing: they want to beat Bush, but all four of these four markets (NY,LA, SF)aren't going to vote for Bush anyway.
I'd be a lot more impressed if Franken was trying this out in Bush Country.
And what's up with non-profits being major advertisers? That is really weak.

I wish them luck. Regardless of how I feel about their wild eyed rants soliloquies, having such a station around could lead to the ultimate creation: anti-FOX. If non alphabet/NYT/LAT liberal media takes off, it will force the so called "mainstream" media to alter itself in order to remain competetive in the market. This, ultimately, will be a good thing for those of us who'd like to hear a diversity of opinion from folks rather than regurgitated headalines from the NY Times.

Look for victorious Republicans to ignore it. Look for defeated Republicans to bring law suits for illegal campaign financing. Look for 501(c)(3)s to get queasy feeling. Hope they've got good lawyers. Maybe they can get a recommendation from Martha Stewart.

Liberal talk radio already exists. It's called Radio Pacifica. There's no market for this stuff.
I doubt they care. The station will survive through the election and then they will just use it to launder advertising money. It's a nice little plan really. They pretend it's pulling advertising dollars, when in fact no real companies are actually spending real money to attract real customers - it's all just a pretty little paper trail.
Companies like DU pretend to "pay" for the advertising with money that really comes from Kimmy and Mrs. Skerry, and the advertising agency "earns" the dirty money which they report as income, pay taxes on it making it clean so they can distribute it as salaries and dividends. And then they all brag about how much money they are "earning" and what a fantastic success this liberal radio has been.
