#5 ...The question has been asked - why would the Russians wreck something that gave them leverage?

Friends at another site may have the answer. The damage is close to a point where several pipelines cross or come very close to one another.

What if they hit the wrong pipelines?

#7 Obviously the US did this. Without the pipeline, Russia just lost a lot of leverage.

This was an attack on Germany, not Russia. Germany might have had a moment of weakness and asked for the gas to be turned back on. The US doesn't want that.

I suppose it's a total coincidence that the US was testing underwater drones in the area a few days ago.

#13 The clowns are posting more ridiculous bullshit again.

This was so obviously the work of the US - consider:

1. NATO dominates the Baltic Sea

2. The US has recently been testing its capabilities to detect and destroy underwater mines and materiel in precisely the area where the explosions occurred

3. The amphibious assault ship USS Kearsarge was in the immediate vicinity of Bornholm, Denmark, just this week. The USS Kearsarge led other US Navy ships in the Baltic Sea we’re on a mission only 30 km from the site of the alleged sabotage on the Nord Stream-1 gas pipeline and 50 km from the threads of Nord Stream-2 gas pipeline.

4. In June and July of this year NATO held its BALTOPS exercises near that exact location. The Baltops 22 maneuver took place in June and July of this year, and the U.S. Sixth Fleet left the Baltic Sea only a few days ago. See this translation from a recent article published by the German local news outlet, Fehmarn24):

“Big Fleet Group From U.S. Navy Passes [German island passage] Fehmanbelt

On Wednesday morning the amphibious assault ship USS Kearsarge, escorted by the Landing Ships USS Arlington and USS Gunston Hall, was en route towards west. Previously, the ships were part of US units that took part in NATO maneuvers and called at numerous ports in Germany, Scandinavia and the Baltic States.

The "USS Kearsarge", flagship of the association and largest warship of the US Navy, which was in action in the Baltic Sea in the last 30 years, has 40 helicopters and fighter planes as well as more than 2000 soldiers on board, the escort ships about 1000. For the around 4,000 soldiers are heading back home on the east coast of the US after their six-month deployment.

Parts of the Kearsange operations in the Baltic Sea were dedicated to test special sub sea mine destruction technologies:

A significant focus of BALTOPS every year is the demonstration of NATO mine hunting capabilities, and this year the U.S. Navy continues to use the exercise as an opportunity to test emerging technology, U.S. Naval Forces Europe-Africa Public Affairs said June 14.

In support of BALTOPS, U.S. Navy 6th Fleet partnered with U.S. Navy research and warfare centers to bring the latest advancements in unmanned underwater vehicle mine hunting technology to the Baltic Sea to demonstrate the vehicle’s effectiveness in operational scenarios.

Experimentation was conducted off the coast of Bornholm, Denmark, with participants from Naval Information Warfare Center Pacific, Naval Undersea Warfare Center Newport, and Mine Warfare Readiness and Effectiveness Measuring all under the direction of U.S. 6th Fleet Task Force 68.”

#24 The Russians destroyed the pipeline in order to jack up the fear and the world price of gas. The pipelines is a written off asset (a sunk cost) and the Germans will never be dependent on it again. It also sends the message that the Russians can attack other pipelines or undersea cables (data as well as power cables).

The Russians hope to cause unrest and peel off the weaker countries like Germany or Hungary. That's why they are also stopping gas transit through Ukraine. That supply of gas also goes to eastern EU members.

Angunter3816, you are Russian. If you can't get what you want, then nobody can have it is so common. For the west, the pipelines are a dead asset. Best to lie there and serve as a monument to the folly of German hopes and Gazprom money.

#26 That gas gets flared off. They don't have the pipelines to move it but a little bit of it to the east. The Turks will buy as much as they can. The Iranians are gas exporters and I doubt the RU->IR pipelines exist. If the Russians get really desperate, they will cap the wells. Getting them back online again is a whole new set of problems.

https://gcaptain.com/russias-nord-stream-2-pipeline-leaks-gas-in-baltic-sea/
Pipelines that are not in use generally have minor amounts of product pumped thru them, back and forth, to maintain the integrity of the line. They're designed to be kept under pressure, and need to be kept under pressure. Operators also use the time to run maintenance "pigs" through the system (They clean out trash accumulation and can be used to look for problems).

Not saying I believe this, but as credible as any other speculation in this thread. This one should be easy to (dis)prove when they divers or ROVs down there, since it would burst the pipe from inside rather than crush it from outside.

#32 Getting back to "who would do such a thing", we can start with a cui bono list:
U.S. : Gonna start here because it's so freakin obvious. I can't see Joey being capable of decisive ation.
Russia : Doesn't make any sense, but not much about this whole shooting match makes much sense.
France: Well, Germany's economy just got kneecapped. In EU politics, France's stock just went up.
Irans and/or China: Due to the pipeline shutdowns, both of these made very favorable deals to buy gas. Maybe they want to make sure the deals stay good. As it happens, both have had naval assets in the Baltic recently.
Ukraine: The obvious beneficiary. I don't see them having the capability.
Greta Thunberg: because why not.

#33 As it happens NS2 was reported leaking before it blew up:

Not sure about that. The articles says that the leak occurred on the 26th. The next day, the two NS1 pipelines were discovered to be spewing gas. At that time, nobody at that checked the seismographs to look for an explosion. The second NS2 pipe leak was detected some time after the other three.

#34 Add Poland, Finland, and the Baltics. Motive: Anti-Russian frontline states.

Add Sweden and Norway. Motive: Eliminate competition.

Capability: I have no idea, but this didn't need to be a big high tech operation with a visible logistical tail. Big underwater drones dumped off the back of fishing trawlers would do it. Watching fleet movements is not very helpful, IMO.

#36 After what we learned in the Afghan area of operations, I would look beyond nation-states as the potential actor is this pipeline drama. Certain individuals have the means and capability to direct ops such as this.

Remember, an individual directing a terrorist org destroyed the twin towers and damaged the Pentagon using our own means against us. OBL pales in comparison to some of the actors that exist in the EU AO...

#37 SS, just stop. Quit being a douche.

Re. cui bono, obviously the Poles are the biggest beneficiaries.

The pipeline from Norway to continental Europe just so coincidentally (Gomer Pyle: “Surprise, surprise, surprise!”) began flowing gas to Poland on literally the same day that NordStream was sabotaged.

The pipeline was opened yesterday, the very same day the Nord Stream system was sabotaged.

The Polish government isn’t even being coy about this — they’re crowing from the treetops. The former Polish Foreign Minister even came out and said, “Thank you, America!”

#38 More on Poland:

100 kilometer south is the Polish naval base Kolobrzeg (the former German Kolberg) which harbors mine laying ships and the 8th Kołobrzeg Naval Combat Engineer Battalion. Naval combat engineers are experts in blowing up anything that is under water, be it mines or pipelines.

In 2021, while Nord Stream 2 was still being build, the Polish navy had interfered and endangered the pipe laying vessels in the very same place.

Then that would be very stupid timing. Pipelines don't just begin pumping full capacity. There is testing and low volume flow, increasing to full capacity.

#41 Globalist, Bullingdon Club member, AEI fellow, former Minister of Defense of Poland, and Blob spouse Radek Sikorski confirmed the USA was behind this act of international terrorism by posting a photo of the awful gas pollution happening in the ocean and saying, "Thank you, USA."

He's deleted it, but only because he said the quiet part out loud. He didn't get the memo that this was a false flag that was going to be blamed on Russia. In fact, everyone seemed surprised. Usually when they have a false flag planned everyone is on the same page and they start bleating in unison. Remember the fake gas attack in Syria, just when Trump had ordered the troops out?

#42 Thanks, Besoeker, for posting that link to Tucker Carlson's segment on this incident. In it, both Biden and Nuland are shown threatening to "end" the pipeline if Russia were to invade Ukraine. Those statements might not be smoking guns but they are pretty convincing evidence.

The presence of US Naval assets in the area of the explosions is more evidence that it was Biden's doing.

The idea that Putin would destroy his own cash cows is absurd.

Convincing evidence also exists that Biden and Nuland were at least complicit in the Maidan coup. This evidence points to Nuland as being the chief engineer of the coup. This evidence is strong enough to render any claims they make about fighting for democracy laughable.

These individuals are dangerous war mongers who could end up getting us all killed with their false claims of fighting for democracy in a far away country where America has no historic, economic or strategic interest.

I call on every member of Congress to stop funding Biden's proxy war against Russia and demand an end to this madness.

#44 FFS - The Baltic is a NATO Sea. To think NATO is so grossly incompetent to allow Eurasia, I mean the Soviets, I mean the Russians - so incompetent to a allow the Russia freedom of movement in NATO's backyard - if that is the case, NATO should be dismantled on that failure alone. To think NATO doesn't have radar and sonar and birds in space monitoring that front/sea just seems ludacris to me. NATO cant see their backyard, please...

Then we have the case of a NATO training exercise on September 26 (the day of the sabotage) and 27: Hungary, Germany, Czech Republic, Italy, Turkey, the United Kingdom, Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania, and Finland... The training missions will take place in the international airspace above the Baltic Sea...

So Eurasia snuck into the Baltic Sea, NATO's backyard, surrounded by NATO ports and air force bases, during a NATO Training Exercise being held over the region. And the story continues that Eurasia bombed the pipeline with a charge/explosive that registered ~3 on the Richter Scale, and was able to sneak out undetected.

U.S. news channel CNN reported Thursday, citing three unnamed sources, that European security officials observed Russian navy support ships and submarines near the area of the leaks in the Nord Stream gas pipelines.

When asked to comment on the CNN report, the Kremlin’s Peskov said there had been a much larger NATO presence in the area. NATO did not immediately respond to a request for comment from CNBC.

#61 And to be fair, I did come across a Maintenance Issue explanation; short of it is a happy machine, is a machine being used. Which this pipeline hasn't been, at least as intended, in quite a while.

I'm not sold on anything yet, but I do have Russians Attacked Pipeline over there with Dallas Wins SuperBowl.

#62 #53 "...spotted near site of the Nord Stream blasts just days ago..." most likely by our naval assets that were directly over the blast site. Just guessing.

#63 KS, how about "maintenance issue" in quotes for a real long shot?

Odd duck in Adidas and hoodie,
As nuts as a two-headed Woody:
"Your Red Army fraction
Required a distraction?"
"All lies!"
"And an oldie but goodie."

#64 Having some background education, and some experience with a burst line, won't go so far as long.

Why interior/exterior inspection schedule (and actual inspection), plus pictures of the rapture/debris field would be important.

In fact, the first things asked for here for a land pipeline incident.

#66 Biggest problem I'm running into would be motive. On the Western Alliance, whether Team DC was in charge or not is now moot, and whether they were in any way responsible, or not, Team DC has $Trillions with a T riding on war, as well as the legitimacy of the Biden Brand.

Its why Abu Uluque is right. Given a long enough time line, there will be an incident which is used by the warmongers as a reason to cross that line.

Other than, you know, nuking the global economy - twice - to bring Russia to its knees by June.

#69 fantasy that a country would blow up its own pipeline and eliminate its #1 source of leverage?

That pipeline is of no economic value for Putin. The Germans will never use it while Putin or any successor dictator is in power. In addition, the US will use its veto.

The only power the NS pipelines now have are as a negative example. My pipeline is blown up. Your pipelines in the west can also be blown up. The Crazy Ivan ploy. Don't mess with Putin, let him rape Ukraine and reassemble the old band (Soviet Union).

No, Russia will be defeated in Ukraine and completely isolated from the West. Your economy will grind to a halt and then the real fun begins in Russia. China waits in the wings.

Also chemical analysis of the pipeline jacket (concrete?). Embedded in it will be explosive residue. Russian explosive formula or western formula? Same for metallurgical analysis. More datapoints.

#72 “That pipeline is of no economic value for Putin.”

Hahaha. The clown who doesn’t understand anything about project finance or sunk costs shows his total ignorance of the natural gas market. Who cares about $100 billion in annual revenues?

We get it, you’re a manic-obsessive Russia-hater with next to no knowledge of economics or strategy or politics. But your and the Nuland-Applebaum neocons’ obsession is leading this country into the ditch. There is no reason — none at all — that we should risk a war with a nuclear-armed Russia over Ukraine.

We have no vital interest at stake in that shitty country. Enough already with this madness.

Ok, two words.

#82 Helmholtz yesterday linked to Philip Pilkington’s excellent discussion of the economic and political consequences, for Germany, Europe generally and the world, of this stupid war — basically a repeat of the 1920s world economy’s imbalances ending of course in a colossal crash.

“European manufacturing will no longer be economically viable. Energy inputs - one of the key inputs in manufacturing - will be too expensive to viably produce products. They will simply be cheaper to buy elsewhere.

3/ There is a good chance some of this manufacturing will move to America - but only in the very short-term. Why? Because investment in manufacturing creates demand for manufactured products. Manufacturing creates jobs in Europe, the workers buy the products.

4/ With no manufacturing jobs, Europeans will have far less purchasing power. If some of the manufacturing moves to America, it will be short-lived. America will realise that much of its export market has collapsed. Note that the EU makes up around 10% of US exports….

9/ The European energy war will likely go down in hitory, together with the Treaty of Versailles and the trade wars of the 1930s, as one of the biggest economic policy errors in history.
