#4 Remember a lot of good military proficient generals 'went south' in 1861. Their loyalty was to their tribes.

#5 /\ Yes, loyalty to community and family. Many must have surely realized what a lost cause it was, but chose to fight for an eventual political compromise. An arrangement that was never to be.
