#8 In Germany, at Christmas 1981, a tenant deliberately sprayed Surströmming broth in the stairwell. Her lease was terminated without notice. The Regional Court of Cologne confirmed the termination after a can of Surströmming had been opened during the oral hearing.

The transport of the Surströmming cans is expressly prohibited on flights of British Airways and Air France due to concerns about the risk of explosion.
