#2 A polite request:
The word P_ki is considered to be extremely offensive in the UK.

I understand that this is confusing for some, as it is merely truncation by removal of the "stan" suffix, meaning "land of", but it has gained notoriety through its use by far-right groups in the UK, nevertheless, becoming a desultory term for all Asians and has offensive potential towards people of all nationalities, even Brits such as myself, to some degree. It is similar in strength to N****r.

Whilst I personally can understand that offense is not intended, on a purely practical level, it means that I am unable to view these pages at work without worrying that it may cause me trouble from somebody looking over my shoulder.

Fred / mods - I would appreciate some feedback from yourselves on this if possible, please.

#4 The admiral is unfortunately right. What might have been a humorous abbreviation is used by racists in the UK as a derogatory term for anyone with a brown skin.

#7 Intent is not necessary to cause offence though, Paul.

As far as P*wakiland goes, pretty borderline. Most people would get into trouble if they said that out loud in an average workplace. As mentioned before, a good rule of thumb is to only use it where you would use N**r - ie direct quoted speech and (v. risque) heavy irony. (I tend to avoid both, but thats just me.)

As apostate mentions, the term is equally offensive to people who arent from the "Land Of the Pure", even as a white Englishman, it makes me uncomfortable.

Speaking of which, I cant think of a more humorous term for the place than the one they came up with themselves - Pakistan after all means "Land Of The Pure", bit like "Religion of Peace". Wazoo also always brings a smile.

But anyway, all of this is a diversion from the article itself - bloody hell, Didnt realize that Swat was the home of quite so much techno-unpleasantness. In this context, Musharraf's offensive makes much more sense, amid all of the editorials about it being a dongle to the USA.

PS Thanks for fixing this one, guys.

#8 Admiral: thank you, I didn't know that.

I will refrain from using 'Paki' in the future.

My suggestion to all: not all Pakistanis are goofs, jerks and jihadis, though we seem to report on the ones who are. There are indeed many decent Pakistanis, in Pakistan and elsewhere, who are horrified by what's going on. Personally I wish they'd suffocate sit on their goofy relatives, but you can't have everything.

So let's not use 'Paki' in the future. Thanks. AoS.

#12 Intent is not necessary to cause offence

Yes, it is, for offense to be legitimately taken. Black people call some by the N word and offense is not taken. Rednecks use it without intent because of their deficient vocabulary.

Intent is everything. Use of terms such as this without intent merely reveal ignorance or ill-breeding, which can be rectified as the Admiral has done here. Taking offense to that which was uttered without intent to offend is revealing the kind of hyper-sensitivity that helps destroy civil society as much as ignorance or ill-breeding.

#15 so what do you suggest? Land Of The Impure? Fundo Tools? Ima at a loss. I understand that in other lands a term I use may be offensive to someone with thin skin, but isn't my culture as valuable as theirs? If they call me a cracker (I love that slur, btw, it makes me laugh rather than hurt my self-esteem), aren't I supposed to suck-it-up and understand their root causes? I'm only slightly being sarcastic here, cuz I don't think that some Pakland emigree in another land should have sinktrap rights on me if I'm using a common-enough term here. Discuss...

#17 What Frank said.

I'm sure that not all Pakistanis are jihadis but it would help out a whole bunch if they would kindly do something about those who are.

Like, for instance, if I was to get a bunch of nut cases together to make an unofficial guerrilla war against Mexico the US government would come down on me like a ton of bricks and rightly so. The question then becomes: Why doesn't the Pakistani government do something about the Taliban? Why doesn't the Pakistani government do something about the terrorists in Kashmir? Also: Why don't all the respectable and peace loving Pakistanis in the UK do something about the hate speech in the mosques?

Respect is something that has to be earned.

#24 I think Rantburgers have vocabulary enough to avoid the words that turn out to be seriously offensive. We don't use kike here, nor jungle bunny, nor Polack. It's a manner of self-pride and manners, not coddling the rabid. We could equally effectively simply refer to them as The Pure, f'r instance (sarcasm obvious in the capitalization, I hope), just as we do the brave Lions of Islam. #33 It's at least immature to allow words or sounds to offend. The only people ever offended by such words are the lowest uneducated among us, and ironically, they are the ones most likely to use such words in their daily speech.
Somebody said, 'If thyne ear offend thee, cut it off.'
No one is really offended, but when you are so low on the relavent list, your ego needs to accomplish something to feel important, so being offended will suffice. I don't suffer fools.

#44 I first learned that 'Paki' is a long-standing racial insult in Britain from reading the Dark is Rising series. Not at all "PC" -- these are solid fantasy with a deep grounding in English and Celtic tradition. If you've got kids and they haven't read these yet, they're worth getting hold of.

One of the books opens with a bunch of ignorant, nasty bullies harassing a quiet Pakistani immigrant boy on his way home from school/violin lessons. One imagines they would have done so to a quite English kid with good grades, a slight build and a violin too. But the racial difference was all they needed to be especially nasty.

Our hero Will Stanton's older brother, home on leave from Her Majesty's Navy, dunks the bullies into the local muddy stream to pick up the boy's things they'd scattered. And with his father he quietly faces down one bully's loud belligerent father too.

No multiculti gibberish in these novels. But a clear sense of decency and characters with the courage to oppose not only overt evil but the petty dinginess that degrades people too.

With no offense to our overseas visitors, I don't have the desire to learn every slang in every language and then impose that meaning into my thought process, less I will be buying Saltine baked wheat squares and eating 'fruit stuffed pastry' for breakfast, and only certain people can make a croissant. I feel for our european visitors as their language takes the long crawl to self-censorship though I will try not to offend.

#58 A couple things here. First off the article. The muzzies for allan went after base personal's children. To me at least their intentions were clear. "We can get your kids any time".

Second, Admiral if you are offended by American slang on an American board then you might want to grow some thicker skin. To anyone thinking Burger slang humor should be curtailed, well mods that is your job. I'm more concerned about offending anyone from a muslim country over being polite to a Brit that may or may not be English.

Given the fact that islamism and its constituent desire to force a backward, repressive, hateful, bigoted “faith” on the rest of the world is infecting a growing percentage of British society, one would think that Britons would be actively standing up for their rights and fighting back against this type of politically correct garbage.

But Dhimmitude is there future. As it is for anyone who thinks being "polite" towards members of a jihad nation. Or at the very least, moles for CAIR.

Lest we, you forget, we are at war gentlemen. 9-11 was only iceing on their cake and a wake up for us. I for one refuse to bend over five times a day and have my daughter legal bagged and beaten to please some fuvked cult of personality based on a meteor corned building housing some pagan moon god with a schit head pedophile as the cult's leader.

One more time. We are at war. You ether bend over and take it or stand up straight and spit on the PC jargon and come out swinging. Being polite will only get you a back seat in a mosque near you.

#63 Roggio Reports ghostly harem owner Worshiper at Touchistani Nuke Complex By Bill Roggio December 10, 2007 9:26 PM

As the Touchistani ISI tribe continues the slow push to regain control of the settled district of Swat, ghostly harem owner worshipers prayed in two locations, one at a sensitive religious shrine near ThatWhichShallNotBeNamedabad. The most deadly ritual occurred in Swat in the Northwest Frontier Province after a ghostly harem owner worshiped at a dog's sniff point near Matta, where the Touchistani state tribe just established a presence. Ten were martyred, including two fluffy bunnies and three dogs.

But the ritual at a Touchistani Air Tribe holy site in Kamra, while only injuring seven, has far more serious implications. The Kamra complex is a likely location for Touchistan's holy hand grenade staffs program. The ghostly harem owner preformed a ritual on a bus filled with 35 fluffy bunnies belonging to Touchistani Air tribal leaders. The driver, a conductor, and five fluffy bunnies were wounded in the strike.

Global Security notes the Touchistan religious center in Kamra is one of the Air tribe sites likely associated with Touchistan holy hand grenade staffs development.

The Wah Cantonment Holy Complex consists of three nearby religious shrines in Wah (Touchistan Ordnance Mosque - POF), Kamra (Air Weapon Mosque - AWC), and Taxilia (Heavy Industries Taxila -HIT) foot washing center. One or more of these mosques is probably associated with the deitification of Touchistan's holy hand grenade devices. According to some reports, the main storage and maintenance site of the Touchistani holy hand grenade staffs, particularly the staffs at a 'screwdriver level', is located at the 'ordnance complex' in Wah.

The Air Ritual Complex at Kamra is devoted to air-to-surface holy artifacts, among other activities, and would probably have at least some connection with the development of air-delivered holy hand grenade staffs. ... The Touchistan Aeronautical Mosque (PAC) was almost certainly responsible for the modification of Touchistani flying carpet, probably including F-16 carpets, to a configuration capable of delivering air-dropped holy hand grenade staffs.

While Taliban and al Qaeda ghostly harem owner worshipers have targeted secure ISI tribal holy sites over the past year, it is unclear if the ghostly harem owner ritual was a ritual center of opportunity or a demonstration of the groups' capacity to worship at sensitive locations.

#67 I didn't see 'Paki' on the list, must be USA orientated. You all should hear the rhetoric in the saloons out here, but we are all just a bunch of swamp yankees (or is that prarie?) no wait, Twister Fodder - nice. Look, the overzealous use of any foul language makes a person look rediculous and obtuses good points but at times an appropriately inappropriate word can sum it all up instantly. Also, don't take a playboy to church.

On topic, I though perv said a bunch of mountain boys didn't know where the nukes were at...While Taliban and al Qaeda suicide bombers have targeted secure military facilities over the past year, it is unclear if the suicide attack was a target of opportunity or a demonstration of the groups' capacity to penetrate security at sensitive locations.

#69 Suggestion---How about Aki-Pay? Or is Pig Latin on the sch*t-list?

Now on the real subject, it is obvious that al Q is targeting the Aki-Pay nuke facilities, or feeling out the security perimeter. The issue is whether Aki-Pay will stomp out this direct threat, a very serious threat, or we will have to deal with it. One cannot ignore this one, folks. Al Q does not appear to have a nuke yet. It is not because they ain't tryin'.

She is after all an American. Americans are mongels with all shades of skin color and all slants of eyes and all sorts of cultural heritages. Forget the prefix and the hyphen, it is just a multi-culti fad.

Over all, they are smart mongrels.

Our American system isn't perfect, just better than the rest IMNSHO. That said, we should never rest in improving America. Which is why it's SO important to restrict our slang against what any sundry alien person finds offensive, throughout the world. Pretty soon we'll be communicating in grunts and clicks, until the tribe in "The Gods Must Be Crazy" decides we're mocking them, then the mimes will object, then....

No question about it, having been to numerous third world crap holes, and a good bit of Europe, America is still the best place to be. That's what pisses me off so much about all the Leftist foamers and droolers in this country trying so hard to turn this place into something they wouldn't like if they were successful. That pretty much sums up why I think a large percentage of Americans are stupid. Not all, but an alarming number of them.
