Heh! Does this idiot really behave what he is saying? Who does he think drove the Taliban out of Kabul in 2001? The Talibs are hated by at least 80% of Afghanis and would be finished if their ranks weren't being swelled by those Pashtoon donkeys in Pakistan. Incidentally, if the US ever gets hit by a WMD attack, it should be made clear that the automonous tribal regions of Pakistan will be among the first regions to be wiped from the map.

#6 If the Afghans are truly leading this it will be interesting to see whether it ends with a defeat or a deal. Given the target rich environment and the absence of enemy dead reports, which the Afghans and Brits have not been bashful about in the past, I am no an optimist on this.

#7 It will take a little time for the Afghan army to develop seasoned NCOs and officers, and for a clear national (vs. tribal) affiliation to take hold.

They are making progress, from what I'm hearing. But it will take time.

We achieved our goals in Afghanistan. That country no longer can be used as a base to attack America.

We're just about done with Iraq. By 2009 we'll be in training/oversight mode there.

Which means our troops need something to do. I can think of an oil-rich Arab nation that is filled with looney Islamofascists who need to be taught a lesson. Kinda close to where you are.

Real close, in fact.

There have been 6000+ people killed in Afghanistan in the last year or so - 4500 of those were Taliban. The majority of the rest were "civilians" killed by the taliban, or caught in the middle between the ISAF and the taliban. The ISAF and Afghanistan have lost fewer than 250 troops during the same time. Yeah, the taliban are winning, all right - winning the race to the grave.
