[CNN] A 3,400-year-old palace has emerged from a reservoir in the Kurdistan region of Iraq after water levels dropped due to drought.
The discovery of the ruins in the Mosul Dam reservoir on the banks of the Tigris river inspired a spontaneous archeological dig that will improve understanding of the Mittani Empire, one of the least-researched empires of the Ancient Near East, the Kurdish-German team of researchers said in a press release.
"The find is one of the most important archaeological discoveries in the region in recent decades," said Kurdish archeologist Hasan Ahmed Qasim.

Construction was complete in 1984 and in the spring of 1985, the Mosul Dam began to inundate the Tigris River, filling the reservoir which submerged many archaeological sites in the region. Wikipedia

[Hot Air] There seems to be some confusion over Volodymyr Zhukovskyy’s status in some of the articles I’ve read. Technically, he’s in the country legally and allowed to work here. But as Howie Carr recently noted in the Boston Herald, this condition is the result of a series of mistakes on our part. When an immigrant is in the United States on a work visa, tourist visa, student visa or what have you, they are expected to be on their best behavior if they would like to stay. When they begin breaking the law, it’s time for their legal resident status to be canceled and for them to go home.
Zhukovskyy had already broken the law multiple times, and we’re not just talking about failures to register his vehicle or get the proper license. He was in trouble for larceny, cocaine, heroin and driving while intoxicated. He’d already received far more passes than he could reasonably expect. And this, as Carr notes, is a case of, "defining deviancy down, this policy of looking the other way when it comes to bad behavior until what used to be unacceptable is normalized."
As I noted at the top, if someone had suspended Zhukovskyy’s license or investigated the trucking company he worked for, that may or may not have prevented the tragedy we witnessed. But do you know what definitely would have ensured he didn’t plow into all those bikers? Sending him back to his home country before he had the chance to do it.

[American Thinker] The genesis of the Democratic Party’s current infatuation with the idea of reparations for slavery and Jim Crow can largely be traced to an article in the Atlantic from 2014 by Ta’Nehisi Coates’ "The Case for Reparations." Make no mistake, the "Case for Reparations" is not about money, it is about "moral reckoning" and remaking the United States.
Like most things Coates writes, few people who cite his work appear to have actually read it. In 2014 Coates was the enfant terrible of the left, now replaced by another even less impressive pseudo-intellection who goes by the moniker "AOC."
But for a certain and relatively large subset of liberals (and particularly white liberals) Coates is the touchstone to most things black. That is, if Coates if for it they are, and more so, if Coates wrote it, or said it, it must be morally justified. It pretty much goes without saying that within this liberal subset are pretty all the Democratic presidential candidates.
Reparations are not about money. They are about a day of judgment for the United States that will restore justice to African-Americans by eradicating "white supremacy."
The immediate means would be through H.R. 40 a House bill that’s been pending for decades. On June 19th the House Judiciary Subcommittee on the Constitution, Civil Rights and Civil Liberties held a hearing on H.R. 40 -- star witness Ta’Nehisi Coates, along with actor Danny Glover and other worthies. The stated purpose of H.R. 40 is to establish a Commission to Study and Develop Reparation Proposals for African-Americans Act. As the hearing continued into this week, President Trump weighed in on Tuesday saying "I don’t see it happening." Of course, that’s likely only to encourage the movement.

There is no civil way to defend yourself from this. The Jim Crowe laws were based on the premise that the same access to employment, education and franchise as applicable to Americans, must not be shared by expatriated African slaves and their offspring. It has not evolved to understand and value the centuries of civilization that have gone by under the administration and efforts of the original civilizing class. It is very simple really. Survival. If the whites are to survive, they've got to start playing dirty. It doesn't matter who enslaved whom, or what was done to their forefathers. All that matters is, your children are being obliged to lay their heads down at guillotines for it.
If Americans truly value their future, they will fight for it. With things like a white antifa(do call it something else), million-strong protests, educating the fringe white communities so they don't end up embarrassments always, coordinating a nationwide campaign against black power, guerilla activities against gangs and enforcers, - sacrifices are inescapable, but once it is in motion, caucasian peoples the world over would join it. That is the general history, yes. But as a Jew I come from a class oppressed in both Christendom and the Ummah, yet we are not known for displacing/slaughtering/enslaving our former oppressors after being granted full citizenship. Likewise, no rumour of such behaviour has reached the ken of man regarding those who separated from the African-American community over the past half dozen or so generations to pass as white.
In fact, the examples of both revolutionary France and — shortly thereafter —Haiti show that the behaviour is not racial but cultural. That the white underclass of Britain, whose degradation has been so thoroughly documented by Theodore Dalrymple, has not equally brutally overthrown its masters is another nail in the coffin of the inevitability of this particular teaching of History.
This demand for reparations is the product of a small group within the Democratic party, and is in fact nothing more than perennial political grandstanding. Even if a bill on the subject were to pass in the House, where it has been pending for decades under presidents Democratic as well as Republican, it would not pass in the Republican Senate, and hasn’t a hope in hell of being signed by President Trump.
In other words, the defence against this kabuki will be entirely civil.

There is a reason the South consistently lagged behind the North in economic development. The South was the last region in the US to eliminate diseases like anthrax. It was the last region to have rural electricity and indoor plumbing.
LBJ worked long and hard to dismantle Jim Crow - not because it hurt Blacks but because it hurt Southern Whites worse.

[The Federalist] Legislators in California have discovered yet another way to make it clear that mainstream religions holding to the sexual teachings of their sacred texts have no business doing so in the Golden State. Why? Because these faiths, which billions of good people worldwide happily hold, do not embrace homosexuality. This includes the three largest: Christianity, Islam, and Judaism.
In a resolution that recently passed the state assembly, "the Legislature calls upon all Californians to embrace the individual and social benefits of family and community acceptance" of LGBT people. It singles out especially faith-motivated individuals and organizations.
These legislators make a very ugly accusation against such people. California lawmakers are planning to spread the idea, with the power and moral authority of the state, that such religious beliefs actually kill people, including children. The text of this bill boldly states:
WHEREAS, The stigma associated with being LGBT often created by groups in society, including therapists and religious groups, has caused disproportionately high rates of suicide, attempted suicide, depression, rejection, and isolation amongst LGBT and questioning individuals...
Note the absoluteness of their conclusions, particularly two words: create and cause. Stigma, created by religious groups, causes high rates of suicide.

[USA Today] The volcano sat dormant for almost a century. Then at 4 a.m. last Saturday, it awoke.
In striking photos captured by satellites and astronauts on the International Space Station, smoke billows from the volcano on Raikoke, northeast of Japan. The uninhabited island saw its first volcanic eruption since 1924.
The photos released this week by NASA show volcanic plumes that rarely rise from the stratovolcano, which is almost a half-mile wide and 650 feet deep.
Raikoke is a tiny island of not even 2 square miles in the Sea of Okhotsk and has been under Russia's control since World War II.
The eruption consisted of at least nine explosions and lasted into the evening, according to the Smithsonian Institution's Global Volcanism Program.

"This is the problem that we run into all the time," Annette Taddeo, a Colombian-American state senator who spoke at the rally before de Blasio, said of the nuances of campaigning in South Florida. "The left has [some] people that are just clueless as hell."
De Blasio, who was in Miami this week to participate in the presidential debates, got into trouble Thursday when he appeared at the airport for a rally for ramp and cargo workers. With a crowd of around 100 chanted behind him, de Blasio urged them to unionize. "The eyes of the world are on this airport, the eyes of the world are on Miami-Dade."

[Jpost] Riots have broken out in the east Jerusalem neighborhood of Issawiya on Thursday night, after a Paleostinian man was earlier killed by Israeli Border Police.
A police spokesperson said there are large numbers of units in the area, as police and soldiers have encountered rioters throwing stones and fireworks, and police units have gathered in other neighborhoods around the city in case of further incidents throughout the night.
Earlier on Thursday evening a masked man approached coppers from a side-street in Issawiya and fired fireworks directly towards them, and was shot in response. Moral: Don't bring fireworks to a gunfight The dear departed was 20-year-old resident of Issawiya who had previously served time in prison for intending to carry out a terror attack against Israelis and had recently been released.
He was taken to hospital at death's door and later died of his wounds.
The Ir Amim rights group identified the dead man as Mohammad Samir Obeid.
Following the shooting, protests between East Jerusalem residents and Israeli security personnel resulted in at least 20 injuries to the demonstrators.

"There were some Congolese people caught crossing the border, it was suspected they had Ebola. In one facility there are three patients being held because they don’t know what they have. The Syrian Army reportedly spotted the jihadist rebels before they could attack their positions, resulting in the death of a number of HTS krazed killers.
Following their losses, the Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham jihadists withdrew from the outskirts of Qasabiyah to friendly lines in the Zawiya Mountains.
A source from the Syrian military said the attack was not an offensive by the jihadists, but rather, an attempt to inflict heavy damage to their defenses at Qasabiyah.

It will facilitate some $50 billion in socioeconomic development, with over $27 billion going to Gaza and the West Bank. The balance will go to Egypt, Jordan and Lebanon.
The plan is nation-building on steroids. It would fund everything from roads, power, water, ICT and border infrastructure, to governance, to health and education, to regional economic integration. It's big, it's bold and it's comprehensive. There's just one problem. As we've learned repeatedly since World War II, development doesn't buy peace in ethnic and religious wars.
Hateful tribal cultures don't act in their best interests. Smite them until they disintegrate or learn
They were given the opportunity with a big bribe. If they choose to spit on it, then President Trump needn't try ever again.

[ENGLISH.ALARABIYA.NET] A Spanish woman hired her son-in-law to kill her partner and then went to the police to file a complaint of fraud when he failed to follow through with the murder, police said on Thursday.
The bizarre case ended with the authorities arresting both the would-be hitman, as well as the woman and her daughter, police said in a statement.
The woman and her daughter went to a cop shoppe in central Madrid in mid-June to file two separate complaints, the statement said.
The first complaint was against the woman’s romantic partner ‐ who she claimed had tricked her out of more than 60,000 euros ($68,000) over the years. The second was against her son-in-law who had agreed to kill him, police said.
Her son-in-law offered to kill the woman’s romantic partner after being told by her daughter about the alleged scam.
He claimed to be head of Spain’s secret services and asked for an advance of 7,000 euros to carry out the killing, promising then to sell the man’s organs and recover the 60,000 euros that the woman had been swindled of.
"The murder never happened and the women felt tricked," the police said. The man and the two women are accused of incitement to commit murder.
Police said the would-be victim was found in perfect health.

[BREITBART] Following an announcement by a group to hold a second "burkini" protest at a pool in the French city of Grenoble, counter-protesters have called on locals to swim in the pool wearing nothing at all.
Last Sunday, a group of around a dozen women belonging to the Alliance Citoyenne (Citizens’ Alliance) protested at a pool that had banned the wearing of the Islamic sharia-compliant swimwear, with police being called soon after the group were told the burkini was against the rules of the pool.
According to a report from La Belle France Bleu, the group has announced another protest to take place on Sunday, but this time others on social media have suggested bathers take off all of their clothes and bathe naked in counter-protest.
"Next Sunday, we invite all the citizens attached to the values of the Republic to get naked in front of the commandos in burkinis! They want to extinguish the enlightenment: together, let’s drop the bathrobes! Long live secularism uninhibited!" the counter-protesters wrote.
Grenoble’s local government official for sport Sadok Bouzaïene said he did not want to contribute to the "buzz" surrounding the issue saying that the women "have broken the swimming pool rules that exist for reasons of hygiene and safety. We do not exclude anyone but there are rules."
Hygiene has also been used as a reason to ban the burkini in other swimming pools in Germany and Austria, although a recent case in the German federal state of Rhineland-Palatinate overturned a ban after a judge deemed it in violation of the constitution.
La Belle France has been wrestling with the topic of the sharia swimwear since 2016 when it was banned on public beaches along the French Riviera. That ban was later overturned by the French supreme court later that same year.

[DW] A police study has revealed that more than half of the country's radicalized students complete their education in general schools. Experts say the government needs to shift focus while targeting potential Death Eaters.
The Anti-terrorism Unit of Bangladesh's police published the report, called Preventing Terrorism and Extremism through Community Engagement, last week. The study used data collected from 3,000 suspects who were arrested between 2015 and 2017.
"The common idea is that only Madrassas produce Death Eaters, which is absolutely wrong. It is evident that only the Madrassa or Islamic education system cannot be blamed for militancy," Additional Deputy Inspector General (Intelligence) Mohammed Moniruzzaman told DW.
EDUCATION TO BLAME?
Schooling in Bangladesh is divided into three chief systems. The general, or mainstream education system treats all religions equally and the curriculum is controlled by the government. Madrassas focus on Islamic education for their students and English-medium schools offer all subjects in the English language. There are around 100,000 primary schools in Bangladesh that follow the general system.
Data from the police study revealed that 56% of Islamic gunnies had been educated in the general system, while 22% each came from English-medium and Madrassa schools, although the English system has only 200 schools compared to 20,000 madrassas.
Speaking to DW, Shantanu Majumder, professor at the University of Dhaka said that the education system alone was not to blame for the influencing students negatively.
"One can be exposed to such [radical] ideas sitting in any type of school, whereas I still believe that the government should not take its hands off of monitoring the books or syllabus that are studied in some religion-based schools," he told DW.
MORE INTERNET, MORE RADICALS?
The survey also revealed that 80% of those arrested were radicalized through the Internet while 20% were swayed by their peers. Police officer Moniruzzaman said that students of Bengali and English-medium schools used the internet more often compared to Madrassa students.
He said it was possible that frequent access resulted in more radicalization, but other surveys have proved the contrary. For example, a survey by Move Foundation, a nonprofit organization based in Bangladesh, revealed that 75% of Madrassa students had access to the internet through their mobile phones and tablets. Their survey included 36 Madrassas across 12 districts of Bangladesh.
"On an average, students of Madrassas spend one and half hours on the internet every day," Saiful Haq, the head of the NGO told DW, adding, "Girls spend more time than the boys." However, we can't all be heroes. Somebody has to sit on the curb and applaud when they go by... school administrators could not prevent students from using the internet when they were at home.
"Many of them use mobile phones and computers at home. They can use the internet there," Mawlana Mahfuzul Haq, principal of the Jamia Rahmania Arabia Madrassa in the capital of Dhaka told DW. He also said that his institution regularly held teachings to dissuade students from joining radical groups. "With references from the holy Koran and Hadith we tell them that there is no relation between religion and terrorism," he said.
SHIFT IN FOCUS
In the last few years, several terror attacks in Bangladesh, including at the Holey artisan bakery in Dhaka, the murders of bloggers and liberal thinkers have led the government of Bangladesh to adopt a "zero-tolerance approach" towards Islamic radicalization. Among other initiatives to prevent the youth from joining Death Eaters, the police are increasingly monitoring educational institutions other than Madrassas.
"Especially after the Holey Artisan attack where students from private universities were involved, the common attitude of blaming Madrassas for spreading radicalization has changed drastically among people," the University of Dhaka's Shantanu Majumder told DW.
He thinks that government agencies have successfully countered terror acts, but there is a complex process through which radicalization occurs, and this has increased. On the other hand, cultural activities like theater, which create open attitudes and promote free thinking, have reduced.
Majumder feels that focusing on cultural movements could fight radicalization. "For that, we need to promote more cultural activities in schools, hostels and other places."

[Rudaw] One woman was killed and 17 other passengers injured when twin blasts struck two public buses in downtown Kirkuk on Thursday, just a month after a string of explosions rocked the disputed city.
The first improvised bomb (IED) detonated on board a bus in Companies’ Street, killing one woman and injuring four other passengers.
The second IED blast struck another bus near the city center, injuring twelve.
Both Toyota Coaster buses were struck by IEDs, security officials confirmed in a Facebook statement ‐ the first in the Rasa Jisir area and the second closer to Celebration Square.
Dr. Karim Wali, director of Kirkuk’s Health Department, confirmed to Rudaw that 18 people had been caught in the blasts, but did not confirm the fatality. Those injured had mostly suffered burns, he said. One person is in a critical condition.
Nobody has claimed responsibly for the attack.
Thursday’s blasts follow a string of deadly explosions in Kirkuk less than a month ago, in which three people died and at least 16 were maimed.
Kirkuk’s security is managed by Iraqi federal forces, which took control of the city from the Peshmerga in a military offensive on October 16, 2017.
The security situation in the city and wider province has been gradually deteriorating since.
Kirkuk is a disputed territory between the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) and the Government of Iraq. The dispute was supposed to be resolved through Article 140 of the Iraqi constitution, but its status has still not been settled.
One person was killed and at least 24 maimed when bombs hit two crowded passenger buses in Iraq's oil-rich city of Kirkuk on Thursday, officials said. The two devices went kaboom! as the buses drove through the city centre around 7 p.m. (1600 GMT), police sources told Rooters.

A spokesperson said Wednesday that Bank of America has discussed the issue with its clients that provide those services. While the bank appreciates "steps they have taken to properly execute their contractual and humanitarian responsibilities," it ultimately decided to "exit the relationships."

The Miami Herald previously reported that Bank of America was a financier of Caliburn ‐ which the newspaper said runs a facility called Homestead under a US government contract. [Libya Observer] Four Libyan families residing in the United States have filed a lawsuit against Khalifa Haftar ...Self-proclaimed Field Marshal, served in the Libyan army under Muammar Qadaffy, and took part in the coup that brought Qadaffy to power in 1969. He became a prisoner of war in Chad in 1987. While held prisoner, he and his fellow officers formed a group hoping to overthrow Qadaffy, so it's kind of hard to describe him as a Qadaffy holdover. He was released around 1990 in a deal with the United States government and spent nearly two decades in the United States, gaining US citizenship. In 1993, while living in the United States, he was convicted in absentia of crimes against the Jamahiriya and sentenced to death. Haftar held a senior position in the anti-Qadaffy forces in the 2011 Libyan Civil War. In 2014 he was commander of the Libyan Army when the General National Congress (GNC) refused to give up power in accordance with its term of office. Haftar launched a campaign against the GNC and its Islamic fundamentalist allies. His campaign allowed elections to take place to replace the GNC, but then developed into a civil war. Guess you can't win them all... , as he is an American citizen, for war crimes, crimes against humanity and violations of human rights ...which are usually entirely different from personal liberty... in Libya.
The families lodged the lawsuit in the county court of the State of Virginia, calling for investigations into Haftar's crimes and urging for holding him accountable for them as per the US laws, since he is a US citizen.
The lawsuits calls for financial compensations of about 100 million dollars as a punishment and 25 million dollars for the suffering and traumas caused by Haftar's forces attacks on their relatives, killing and injuring many of them in artillery shelling and Arclight airstrike ...KABOOM!... s on the outskirts on Tripoli ...a confusing city, one end of which is located in Lebanon and the other end of which is the capital of Libya. Its chief distinction is being mentioned in the Marine Hymn... The lawsuit explains that Haftar's terrorist acts are violations of international laws and, hence, the US laws and he must be tried at a US court as he is an American citizen.
This lawsuit comes after a similar one has been formerly lodged in a Gay Paree court, accusing Haftar of killing family members in Ganfouda - Benghazi in 2014 - of a Libyan man who lives abroad.
The case was made by French lawyers who called on the government to probe Haftar at a time he was on French soil, but nothing happened.

[MOBILE.ALMASDARNEWS] Ottoman Turkish military choppers were spotted over northern Syria this evening, a source in the Hama Governorate told al-Masdar News.
According to the source, the Ottoman Turkish military choppers were making their way to their observation post near the Hama Governorate town of Sheir Magher.
The source added that they were likely transporting the three Ottoman Turkish soldiers that were maimed during Thursday’s attack by the Syrian Arab Army (SAA).
The Ottoman Turkish military has yet to respond to the Syrian Army’s attack on their observation post in northwestern Hama.
[ALMASDARNEWS] The Syrian Arab Army (SAA) launched a new attack in the northwestern countryside of the Hama Governorate this morning that targeted the whereabouts of Jaish al-Izza and Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham, formerly al-Nusra, before that it was called something else ...al-Qaeda's Syrian affiliate, from which sprang the Islamic State... According to a report from the Hama Governorate, the Syrian Arab Army heavily shelled the Ottoman Turkish observation post are near the small town of Sheir Magher.
The Syrian Army did not hit the actual Ottoman Turkish military; however, in the short video released by the murderous Moslem groups below, the shells can be seen landing close to this observation post.

The media group released a picture showing smoke in front of a Ottoman Turkish military vehicle near their observation post in the town of Sheir Magher.
Previously, it was reported that the Syrian Arab Army had shelled the Ottoman Turkish observation post area, but no was harmed.
Two weeks ago, the Syrian Army hit a Ottoman Turkish observation post near the town of Morek; this resulted in the hospitalization of three Ottoman Turkish Army soldiers.

[NYPOST] A pair of jacket wallahs blew themselves up in the capital of Tunisia on Thursday, leaving one police officer dead and at least nine others injured.
One attacker targeted police on Charles de Gaulle Street, a busy commercial strip, in central Tunis shortly before 11 a.m., while another attack took place simultaneously near a cop shoppe in the al-Gorjani district, in the outskirts of the city.
Five coppers were among those injured.
The attacks sent people fleeing in terror, witnesses told Rooters.
"I was shopping with my daughter and we heard a big explosion. We saw the body of the terrorist lying on the ground near a police vehicle after he went kaboom!," said a man who gave his name only as Mohammed.
The suicide kabooms come months before an election and at the peak of tourist season.

The moment came when the 10 participants were asked, by a show of hands, who would dispense entirely with private health insurance. Only New York Mayor Bill de Blasio and Warren signaled "yes." That's when former Rep. John Delaney, one of the least visible of the 24 announced candidates, weighed in.
After pushing back on the idea of taking something away from Americans that most are reasonably happy with, we already been down that road Delaney said this:
"Also it’s bad policy. If you go to every hospital in this country and you ask them one question, which is how would it have been for you last year if every one of your bills were paid at the Medicare rate? Every single hospital administrator said they would close. And the Medicare for All bill requires payments to stay at current Medicare rates. So to some extent we’re basically supporting a bill that will have every hospital closed." Unless, or course, you're gonna nationalize the hospitals.
And then he finished with a stinger about his electrician father on union health insurance: "He’d look at me, and he’d say ’Good job, John, for getting health care for every American, but why are you taking my health care away?’"
Delaney might have been talking to the very, very, very long-shot mayor of New York. But the other person who raised her hand to essentially scrap private insurance was the much more plausible Senator Warren. And a Democratic former congressman‐not some right-wing think tank or Freedom Caucus Republican‐was saying, on TV, that her policy would threaten the survival of just about every hospital in the country, and yank good insurance from working people.
And a year from now‐an eternity in campaign time, but not too long to keep the issue warm in a big oppo file‐it wouldn't be hard at all for Donald Trump, on Twitter and in ads and on a debate stage, to point out that a member of Warren's own party, sharing the same stage, implied that her health care ideas would be dangerous for America. (The same applies in spades for self-identified socialist Sanders.)

Wildlife experts say about 40 calves may have been stolen from their herds during a 10-year period and sold for around $125,000 each.
The deputy director of the wildlife conservation department, Upali Pathmasiri, and seven others were charged with 33 counts of capturing and possessing baby elephants in 2014-15, state attorney Nishara Jayaratne said.
It is the "first ever elephant trafficking case in our legal history", Jayaratne told AFP. If convicted they face up to 20 years in jail.
The practice stopped when the current government came to power in January 2015 and launched a crackdown. Recovered animals were moved to a state sanctuary for elephant orphans.
The super-rich consider having a baby elephant at home as the ultimate status symbol. It was also a tradition by aristocrats to keep the animals, which are paraded at Buddhist temple festivals.
The illegal trade has been blamed for the drop in the elephant population, with conservationists saying mother elephants were often killed so the calf could be taken.

The convicts are mosque imam Salim Hossain, from Basna village, and his associate Jamal, from Digol village of Dhamrai.
Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate Abu Forkan Md Maruf Chowdhury on Thursday handed down the verdict in presence of accused Jamal, while the mosque imam is absconding.
The court also fined the two convicts Tk5,000 each.
A total of 6 witnesses out of 12 testified before the court since the recording depositions of witnesses in the case.
According to the case, Imam Salim raped the class five schoolgirl in his room when she went to the Moktob, and his associate Jamal recorded the rape on video with his mobile phone.
Victim’s father filed a case in Dhamrai cop shoppe when the accused spread the rape video in the area.
After concluding probe, Dhamrai cop shoppe Sub-Inspector (SI) Md Masudur Rahman submitted a charge sheet against the two accused in the Dhaka chief judicial magistrate court on September 09, 2014.

[DAWN] Thirty-seven people were killed in an attack on Sunday in Æthiopia’s Benishangul-Gumuz region, the governor said on Wednesday.
Benishangul-Gumuz borders the Amhara region, where authorities foiled a deadly attempt to oust the regional government on Saturday.
Three officials, including the region’s president, were killed in that attack.
Ashadli Hassen, governor of Benishangul-Gumuz, said that the attack on villages in Metakal zone was carried out by gunnies believed to be followers of the army general who attempted a coup in Amhara, Ashadli Hassen, governor of Benishangul-Gumuz, said.
The attackers returned to Amhara after the assault in which 18 others were maimed, he said.An internet shutdown remains in force following Saturday’s violence, which included the liquidation of the national army chief by his bodyguard in the capital, Addis Ababa.
The militia attacked the police headquarters, ruling party headquarters and president’s office ‐ where they executed three brass hats ‐ in Amhara’s regional capital of Bahir Dar on Saturday, Asemahagh Aseres said on the sidelines of a state burial for the officials who were killed.
The militia was a recently formed unit of the region’s security services. It had appealed for others to join its take-over were rebuffed, Asemahagh said.
Another report said that men in camouflage uniforms killed more than 50 people and injured 23 others in the Metakal zone of the Benishangul-Gumuz region early on Monday, the region’s peace and security bureau head Abera Bayeta said.
"They are part of our police. They are not independent," he said. "(But) most of the forces were not with them. They defended (us) very well." The fact that the militia were state forces rather than independent raises the stakes for the government of Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, who has rolled out a package of economic and political reforms since taking office in April last year.

Louisa Vesterager Jespersen, 24, from Denmark, and Maren Ueland, 28, from Norway, were found dead on Dec. 17 near the Moroccan village of Imlil, a popular hiking and trekking destination.
The three men had pledged allegiance to the ISIS in a video made three days before the murder. Authorities described them after their arrest as "lone wolves" who had not coordinated the killings with ISIS.
Last month in a court hearing in Sale near Rabat, two of the suspects, Abdessamad Ejjoud and Youness Ouziyad, admitted to attacking and decapitating the two women, who were staying overnight in a tent in the mountains.
A third suspect, Rachid Afatti, said he filmed the killing. Ejjoud said the video of the murder was shared with other ISIS sympathizers.
The prosecutor called for life in prison for a fourth suspect who left the group on the day the murder took place.
The prosecutor also demanded prison sentences ranging from 10 to 30 years for 20 other people, who were arrested for links to the main suspects. The 20 face charges including forming a criminal gang to commit terrorist acts, encouraging terrorism, and undermining public order.

[Dhaka Tribune] Ayesha Akhter Minni, the wife of Rifat Sharif who was killed in a broad daylight attack recently, has said that the prime suspect, Nayan Bond, used to harass her before marriage. He forced her to talk to him over the phone and threatened to kill anyone who came between them.
"When I informed my family about Rifat, with whom I had a romantic relationship, they arranged our marriage," she said, adding, "I had also informed the matter to my husband."
Recounting the fatal attack on her husband by a group of men armed with sharp weapons, Minni said: "When Nayan, with others, attacked Rifat in front of Barguna Government College, I tried to save him, but bystanders did not come forward seeing the sharp weapons."

Rifat’s father has lodged a case accusing 12 people, and police have already arrested a man identified as Chandan.

[ENGLISH.ALARABIYA.NET] Tunisia’s 92-year-old president, Beji Caid Essebsi, a major player in the country’s transition to democracy since 2011, was taken to a military hospital on Thursday after suffering a "severe health crisis," the presidency said.
One of Essebsi’s advisers told Rooters during the day that he was in a "very critical" condition. On Thursday evening, the adviser said the president’s condition was beginning to improve, without elaborating.
Prime Minister Youssef Chahed said on Facebook that Essebsi was receiving the attention he needed and that people should stop spreading fake news about his condition, after some reports said the president had died.
The presidency said in a new statement that "his condition now is stable and he is under the necessary checks."
The elderly head of state was hospitalized last week as well, for what the presidency described as non-serious treatment.
Essebsi has been a prominent figure in Tunisia since the overthrow of autocrat Zine El-Abidine Ben Ali in 2011 which set the North African country on a path to democracy, avoiding the more violent upheavals seen in the rest of the region.
He led the immediate transition as prime minister in 2011 and was elected president three years later. Essebsi was a senior figure before 2011, having served as foreign minister under state founder Habib Bourguiba and parliamentary speaker under Ben Ali.
He said in June he would not run for a second term in presidential elections this year, despite his party’s calls for him to stand. The party has not identified another candidate yet.

[DAWN] A gunman opened fire outside a mosque in northwestern La Belle France on Thursday, wounding the local imam and another person, before fleeing the scene and later being found dead, officials said.
It was not immediately clear what motivated the incident in the port city of Brest in Brittany, but Interior Minister Christophe Castaner said he had issued orders to increase security measures around places of worship across La Belle France.
Imam Rachid El Jay was hit by four bullets while a worshipper who was with him sustained injuries from two bullets, but neither was thought to have life-threatening wounds, the French Council of the Moslem Faith (CFCM) and judicial sources said.
"(El Jay) sustained two bullet wounds to the abdomen and two to the legs.
The worshipper was hit in the legs by two bullets," the CFCM said.
The incident occurred around 4:00 pm (1400 GMT), when several shots rang out in front of the mosque, it said.
A police source said the suspected shooter was found dead in an area near the airport, some 10 kilometres (six miles) from the mosque, with a fatal gunshot wound to the head after an apparent suicide.
According to the local newspaper Le Telegramme, the suspect grabbed credit for the attack on Facebook. The targeted imam has a large following on the site.
AN IMAM'S CHANGE OF NAME
Eljay was previously known under the name of Rachid Abou Houdeyfa and made a series of controversial statements and online videos.
He first came to prominence in 2015 while La Belle France was confronting a series of terror attacks. The imam's strong, Salafist-inspired statements dated to 2012 and in one video he was seen telling children who liked listening to music that "Allah would change them into pigs or monkeys." His YouTube channel at the time had 68,000 followers.
In April 2016, then-President Francois Hollande ...the Socialist president of La Belle France, an economic bad joke for la Belle France but seemingly a foreign policy realist... said on television that the Brest mosque had been closed and Imam Rachid Abu Houdeyfa was being prosecuted. However, some men learn by reading. A few learn by observation. The rest have to pee on the electric fence for themselves... this was later found to be inaccurate. On Facebook, the imam responded to Hollande's accusations saying: "The imam of Brest has never committed any criminal offense, he has never broken any law, or been indicted because of his speeches ‐ unlike many other people." He has reportedly received death threats from the "Islamic State ...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that they were al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're really very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. While the mosque and the imam's home had been raided, no legal proceedings ensued and the imam has continued his activities and as of Thursday had over a million likes on his Facebook page.

Protesters stormed the Bahraini embassy compound in Baghdad Thursday night, removing the flag from above the building and replacing it with a Paleostinian banner in protest against a US-led economic conference held in the Gulf nation to push Washington’s Israeli-Paleostinian peace plan.
Bahrain’s Foreign Ministry condemned the attack and said the kingdom was recalling its ambassador, Salah Ali al-Maliki. It added that Iraqi authorities have a responsibility to protect the embassy in Baghdad.
The attack on the embassy could affect relations between Iraq and nearby gulf nations at a time when they have been improving in recent months since Iraqi Prime Minister Adel Abdul-Mahdi took office. The assault was believed to have been carried out by supporters of Iran-backed Iraqi militias.
Iraq’s Foreign Ministry front man Ahmad al-Sahhaf told The News Agency that Dare Not be Named that Baghdad condemns the attack on the embassy adding that "Iraqi authorities will go after those who took part of the attack as well as the instigators."
No one was hurt in the standoff that lasted more than an hour and later in the night Iraqi security forces were in control of the area.
An Iraqi security official said the protesters forced their way in by breaking through the main gate but stayed in the garden without storming the offices inside the compound. The official, who spoke on condition of anonymity in line with regulations, said security forces opened fire in the air to disperse the protesters and reinforcements were sent to Baghdad’s western neighborhood of Mansour, where the embassy is located.
More than an hour later, the nearly 200 protesters, waving Iraqi and Paleostinian flags, dispersed. The official said 25 of the protesters were detained by Iraqi security forces later in the evening.
The Bahraini diplomats were evacuated earlier from the compound into the heavily fortified Green Zone that is home to the Iraqi government headquarters, after the mission received threats, the official said.
The two-day workshop in Bahrain that ended Wednesday was to promote the Trump administration’s $50 billion economic support plan for the Paleostinians ahead of a Mideast peace plan to be announced later. Several Arab countries boycotted the Bahrain conference including Leb and Iraq as well as the Paleostinian Authority.

[Rudaw] Four non-combatants were killed in Ottoman TurkishArclight airstrike ...KABOOM!... s on Thursday at the foot of the Qandil Mountains just a day after Ottoman Turkish raids killed a civilian in Bradost, 70 km northeast of Erbil, locals and officials have confirmed.
A local of Sangasar district told Rudaw at least three members of the same family were killed in an airstrike near the village of Kurtak at the foot of the Qandil Mountains.
The bodies have been moved to a local hospital, the local said.
Multiple social media users in the area have named three of the victims as Abdullah Aly Mina and his two children Kurdistan Abdullah Aly Mina and Haryad Abdullah Aly Mina. A fourth victim has been named as Aly Mina.
Another local in Sangasar claimed four civilians died and five more have been injured in Ottoman Turkish strikes.
Hiwa Qarani, head of Raparin Administration that includes Ranya, told Rudaw four individuals were killed and five injured. The four were burnt alive in their car, he added.
Barzani Ibrahem Ahmed, a local, posted a photograph appearing to show the destroyed vehicle.
"This evening Ottoman Turkish jets struck just ten meters from us, but the missile hit the car in front of me. Some [flying] parts of the car hit my car, but me, my son, and two of my friends got out safely thanks to God," Ahmed said in a Facebook post.
Responding to comments, he confirmed four people were killed.
In a separate incident, a local of Sangasar told Rudaw a Ottoman Turkish F-16 and a drone bombed the Sidakan area in Bradost shortly after 4pm local time.
He provided Rudaw English with a photograph which appears to show four columns of smoke, indicating there had been four airstrikes in the area.
The Sick Man of Europe Turkey ...the only place on the face of the earth that misses the Ottoman Empire... 's defense ministry is yet to comment on the attacks.

[DAWN] A German humanitarian group said its ship carrying 42 migrants colonists rescued off Libya two weeks ago has entered Italian waters near the southernmost island of Lampedusa at midday on Wednesday in defiance of an explicit ban by the country’s hard-line interior ministry.
Italian Interior Minister Matteo Salvini responded, saying he wouldn’t allow any of the migrants colonists to disembark, and threatened to deploy law enforcement.
"The right to defend our borders is sacred," Salvini said. He has insisted that the boat should have continued to other ports during the two-week standoff, and not remain close to Italia.
He cited nearby Malta and Tunisia, but also northern Europe ...the land mass occupying the space between the English Channel and the Urals, also known as Moslem Lebensraum... an ports, noting that the group is German and that the boat has a Dutch flag.
Sea-Watch said that the migrants colonists had become desperate after the European Court of Human Rights on Tuesday rejected their appeal to be allowed to disembark in Italia.

Arrest the crew for assisting in people trafficking and confiscate the boat as it's used for committing crime
[WFLANEWS.IHEART] Sheriff's deputies are investigating after an alligator was discovered with its jaws on a man's body. I'm starting to think we need a "Florida Man" category.
I’m sure there are entire websites for that.
The site was near an old phosphate mine off Peeples Road. The Polk Sheriff's Office got the call from a supervisor at phosphate mining company Mosaic around 7:45 Thursday morning. They found the dead man in a canal after someone spotted both the body and the gator.
The sheriff's office says the creature "disengaged" when they arrived. State FWC agents shot and killed the alligator.
Deputies say they don't know what caused the man's death, and won't say until the medical examiner finishes an autopsy on his body and a necropsy on the alligator.

[Mil.com] The U.S. Coast Guard announced Tuesday it will implement a program to pay shipping costs for service members who send breast milk to their babies when they are underway or on other official travel.
The reimbursement program, funded by Coast Guard Mutual Assistance, will pay up to $750 a year per household for shipping. It will be available to all active-duty personnel, Public Health Services officers and Navy chaplains detailed to the Coast Guard, reserve members on active duty status, spouses on business travel and Coast Guard civilian employees.
The new benefit is among a host of initiatives underway in the sea service to attract and keep women. In a Coast Guard-wide message, Rear Adm. Matthew Sibley, acting assistant commandant for Human Resources, said feedback from the service’s Women's Retention Study and Holistic Analysis, contributed the new policy’s creation.
Earlier this year, Coast Guard Commandant Adm. Karl Schultz promised numerous changes in the coming year designed to keep women in the service, attract female recruits and increase diversity.

[ALMASDARNEWS] Syria’s oil pipelines off the coast of Tartous recently came under attack by an unknown entity in the eastern Mediterranean.
While no group or country has grabbed credit for the attack, Syria’s al-Watan publication, citing Russian Today and Eurasia Daily, reported that the earth-shattering kabooms at the oil pipelines were not an accident.
The report said the pictures showing the aftermath of the earth-shattering kaboom indicates that they were detonated.
"The pictures show that the pipelines were not accidentally damaged, but rather, were detonated. The importance of these lines is that they supply the Banias oil refinery with raw materials from tankers, and are now the main source of strategic energy in Syria.
They would go on to say that those responsible for the attack were either the United States ‐ who have imposed sanctions against Syria ‐ or neighboring The Sick Man of Europe Turkey ...the occupiers of Greek Asia Minor... .
According to the publication, Turkey may have retaliated against Syria for their attack on the Ottoman Turkish military’s observation post.

[ALMASDARNEWS] The Israel Airports Authority (IAA) confirmed reports that "many" pilots had been losing their Global Positioning System (GPS) signals mid-air, and that the problem has been occurring for the last three weeks. The issue affected airplanes in-flight near the airport, however, the ground systems had been totally unaffected.
An aviation source told Haaretz newspaper that the interruptions occur only during daytime, but "do not put pilots and passengers at risk."
The IAA also assured that "at no stage has there been a safety incident stemming from the GPS disruption in the context of the precision of navigation and flight corridors."
However, you can observe a lot just by watching... the reason behind the disruptions of the signal remains unclear.
The Israeli army’s front man told Haaretz that the incident had no effect on the Israel Defense Forces’ activity and that the army is assisting with "technological measures, in order to ensure freedom of action in Israel’s airspace."
The Russian embassy in Israel dismissed the allegations as "fake news" that they "couldn’t respond to seriously."
The interference with the airplanes’ GPS reception appears to stem from a form of electronic warfare known as "spoofing," which Russia has been accused of doing in the past as a defensive measure, despite the disruptions it causes to nearby aircraft and ships.
