One might think of traditional media bureaus as white and male, but in fact foreign news bureaus in China are staffed with many young & extremely talented Chinese nationals, mostly women. Beijing's Ministry of Foreign Affairs forbids them from becoming fully-fledged journalists. https://t.co/FCFJ3Edifz

B, thanks for posting. This is pure sentimentality on my part, but I find it somehow reassuring that the young lady standing on the balcony of Buckingham Palace with her parents is still the Queen. Her barmy family aside, she's one of our last visible human links to that great victory. Photos here, including Brits waving American flags.

Seconded. Blimey's lucky she's still Queen.
Notice how a couple weeks ago, in her message to the realm re COVID, the Queen made an unmistakeable reference to wartime memories of Vera Lynn songs with her closing comment, "We will meet again."

Churchill announces the end of the war in Europe. In 1940 some members of the British aristocracy called him a "half-breed" because his mother was Amercian.

/\ Many of his views were ahead of their time, namely his personal assessments of Islam. He had honed at least some of his opinions on horseback, far from the shores of Albion.

We'll meet again,
Don't know where, don't know when,
But I know we'll meet again
Some sunny day.
Keep smiling through,
Just like you always do,
'Till the blue skies drive the dark clouds far away
[Babylon Bee] WASHINGTON, D.C.—President Trump today announced that "out of an abundance of caution" all reporters present at White House press briefings must wear MAGA masks. All who entered the briefing area were asked to remove any personal masks and to instead don one of the new red masks with "Make America Great Again" embroidered into the fabric.
"These are the best masks, everyone agrees. Really spectacular. They have sunlight, UV rays, disinfectant. Good stuff. They smell great too. Really, really good stuff. The best," Trump explained.
Many reporters complained that the masks were "too insulated" and "made it impossible to comment or ask questions." President Trump said this issue did not concern him at this time. Heh heh

An easy one to start off the week. (wait, what day is it again?)
You know, Trump could merely suggest this in a tweet, "Maybe I should make the press wear MAGA masks...", and everyone would go nuts, exactly as if he had ordered it.
[Telegraph] Johan Giesecke, who helped shape Sweden's approach to coronavirus, says lockdown does not protect vulnerable in care homes.
The architect of Sweden's coronavirus strategy has claimed the UK's lockdown has been largely "futile" in containing the virus.
Johan Giesecke, a state epidemiologist who advises the World Health Organisation, said the UK's death toll suggested instating harsh social restrictions was not the best method of tackling the pandemic.
Sweden has so far refused to impose the type of lockdown seen in other European countries, keeping many schools, restaurants and businesses open.
The UK’s death toll is more than 10 times that of that in Sweden, where fewer than 3,000 people have been killed by Covid-19 to date.
Referring to the high coronavirus death toll across UK care homes, Prof Giesecke said: "A hard lockdown does not protect old and frail people living in care homes – a population the lockdown was designed to protect....

Everyone is the expert. I can readily see how the Nazi overcame the German population. I see everyday among the public the willingness to attack anyone they perceive not to be compliant. Johan Giesecke has been proven correct. Confinement as in a Cruse ship or Nursing home is to invite death. Finally just in the last few days Nursing Home staff are wearing goggles. This was required when Aids came upon us. I remember that day well. Medical staff in my area wore protection. Even had a suit with air conditioning. Didn't catch on because of cost. Surgical gloves of metal for non piercing needles protection. On and on but always cost.
