MEMPHIS, TN (WMC-TV) - Two men have been charged with making threats against presidential candidate Barack Obama.
Daniel Cowart, 20, of Bells, Tennessee and Paul Schlesselman, 18, of West Helena were charged in a federal complaint last Friday of illegal possession of a sawed-off shotgun, conspiracy to rob a federal firearms licensee, and making threats against a major candidate for the Office of President.
According to the complaint, Cowart and Schlesselman met via the Internet through a mutual friend last month, with both men claiming to have very strong beliefs regarding "White Power" and "Skinhead" philosophies.
The complaint said the pair discussed robbing a gun shop in order to gather weapons and ammunition to use in a 'killing spree.'
On October 20, 2008, Cowart allegedly traveled from Tennessee to Arkansas to pick up Schlesselman in order to carry out their plan.
According to the complaint, the defendants further discussed their killing spree to include targeting a predominately African American school, and to continue their spree until their final act of violence, which would be to attempt to assassinate Obama.
Officials said Cowart and Schlesselman stated that they would be willing to die during their attempt.
The pair was arrested on October 22, 2008 by the Crockett County, Tennessee Sheriff's Department.
Cowart and Schlesselman appeared in court Monday, and are scheduled to appear again at a detention hearing on October 30th.
Note: This is NOT the same mess of inbreds who were arrested in Denver in August.
The right-wing bloggosphere is alive right now with rumors that this is just a repeat of the August story, recycled by the usual suspects to help Obama. This foolishness originates from Free Republic, where some fool posted pics of the August perps, with no link or explanation, and others quickly assumed they were the same as today's perps. This was helped along by the notorious inability of Freepers to post links. Again, THIS IS NOT THE SAME ALLEGED PLOT OR THE SAME PERPS.

Got locked out of Rantburg for a while today. This is incredibly frustrating.
LGF has been screwed up all day, as it is for part of EVERY day. The little spinning arrow starts up when I try to refresh or post, and when it stops nobody knows. I have to close the browser window when it does this, btw.
The site takes forever to load, vital features sometimes fail to load at all, and it has disappeared entirely for the last half-hour or so.
I love LGF but I am going to stop going there until I have some assurance the site is fixed. Enough is enough.

I agree that this is a thing that is completely off the charts re: reason and i am also glad these nutcases were caught, but where is the similiar outrage about the Palin effigy hanging out there in California; can't that also be considered a hate crime? what would the MSM be doing if it were Obama? not sitting on their hands that's for sure.

Actually, to my mind the mere fact that ATF arrested these guys says to me that the Obama factor in this is just window dressing. If it was a serious plot, the Secret Service of the FBI would be more likely to be lead agency on it.

"The halting of Gulf Bank shares spread panic in the bourse today because the government has been saying banks are safe from (global financial crisis) losses," investor Ahmed al-Fadhli said a telephone interview.
The Saudi stock exchange - the region's largest - fell by 8.7 percent Saturday and is down more than 50 percent since January. Saudi's benchmark Tadawul index closed down about 1.6 percent Sunday, while the Dubai Financial Market sank 4.7 percent, and Qatar's exchange closed down almost 9 percent. Kuwait's exchange was down 3.5 percent at closing. The losses tracked most other major world market indices, which saw declines Friday.
Neither the government nor Gulf Bank revealed the size of the losses or their timeframe. But Ibrahim Dabdoub, the chief executive of the National Bank of Kuwait, told Al Arabiya television the losses were up to $742 million. Because most of the region's banking sector is privately held, little is known about the institutions' true risk exposure.
The Gulf Bank news also appeared to have pushed the Kuwaiti government to take a step it has so far resisted - guaranteeing deposits. The country currently makes no deposit guarantees. The central bank said it would propose an urgent bill to guarantee deposits at local Kuwaiti banks in an effort to "boost confidence in our banking sector."

He said that the programme also includes speeches by Minister of Higher Education Khaled Al Anqari, KAAU President Osama Tayeb, Dean of the university's Faculty of Engineering Faisal Iskanderani, and representative of the European Union Luis Martin-Oar. Al Johani said participants would listen to the experiences of countries such as Egypt, the Czech Republic, Chile and others in the domain of nuclear technology.

MOSCOW: The breakaway region of Abkhazia accused European Union monitors of ignoring "armed provocations" by Georgia along its boundaries and said Sunday that its retaliation would be emphatic.
The accusation was made one day after a Georgian district governor and a villager were killed by what the Georgian police said were mortars fired from the Abkhaz side in the boundary zone.
On Sunday, Abkhazia accused Georgia of firing at a border checkpoint, saying one of its border guards had been wounded. The new shooting appears to have increased tension around Abkhazia's de facto border since Russian forces pulled back to within the rebel region this month, following a five-day war with Georgia in August.
"The heightened activity of Georgian subversive groups in Abkhazia, these frequent shootings and killings, are a consequence of the absence of Russian peacekeepers in the conflict zone and the inaction of EU monitors," Russia's RIA news agency quoted an unidentified senior Abkhaz security official as saying.
The Abkhaz leader, Sergei Bagapsh, held an emergency meeting of the separatist security council. "Georgia is launching a large-scale terrorist action on the territory of the Republic of Abkhazia," Bagapsh told the meeting, as televised on Russia's Vesti-24 state channel. "I repeat: Shooting at any post from Georgian territory will be punished by retaliatory fire from all weapons we have at our disposal," he said. British insurance companies will not be bailed out by the United States,The Times has learnt. It is understood that, although Henry Paulson, the US Treasury Secretary, was prepared to listen to appeals for cash from British and American insurers, he is adamant that US bailout funds will go only to federally regulated financial institutions that lend money.
This excludes insurers such as Prudential, Friends Provident, Standard Life and Aviva, which have all suffered steep falls in their share prices this month despite giving reassurances about their capital strength.
British insurers have been under scrutiny by the Financial Services Authority, which believes they are paying too little consideration to an increased risk of corporate bond defaults. Traders are fearful of insurers exposure to companies failing to meet obligations.
Although Aviva and Prudential have formally denied any need to carry out a rights issue or raise fresh capital from existing shareholders, news that British insurers have sought US federal assistance is expected to undermine confidence in the insurance sector further.
The US Treasury is understood to have told UK and American insurers that there will be no plans to expand its capital purchase programme, under which international banks can apply to sell troubled assets and an equity stake to Washington.
Although Mr Paulson nationalised AIG, the worlds biggest insurer, last month at a cost of $84 billion (£53 billion) to the US taxpayer, he is understood to be at pains to emphasise that this bailout was an exception and that it did not open the door for other insurers to beg for rescue funds.

The reason food is being exported is because Chinese farmers have had price controls slapped on them. Many are barely making money. At the same time, China won't allow foreign food to be imported without 100% tariffs. There is no food crisis - the Chinese government is only having problems enforcing its edicts.

OK, fertilizer in most of the world are nitrogen compounds directly derived from natural gas and should track the price of natural gas very closely.
The only way Chinese fertilizer is going to be cheaper than everyone else's is if the producers are paying less for natural gas than everyone else.
I've been saying for a while that part of the way China keeps its whole deal going is partly by sweetheart deals giving it cheaper access to raw materials, and partly by subsidizing the raw materials costs of its manufacturers. (These can be done by 'loans' that never get paid back, for example).
