Taliban bans use of foreign currency amid economic woes in Afghanistan
[PUBLISH.TWITTER]

The use of foreign currencies in Afghanistan will be banned as a response to the country's current economic troubles, a Taliban
...Arabic for students...
* front man has announced.

"The economic situation and national interests in the country require that all Afghans use Afghan currency in their every trade", the Taliban announced.

As the country faces economic crisis and the Taliban-controlled central bank struggles to change the situation, the population has widely resorted to the use of US dollars as a means of trade and payment, as well as the currencies of neighbouring countries, such as the Pak rupee.

Economic woes struck the country soon after the Taliban seized the capital and the rest of the nation in the middle of August 2021. People had trouble getting their hands on cash or withdrawing it from bank accounts as the central bank had imposed restrictions, while companies often could not receive wires from abroad and fulfil their international obligations.

Africa Horn
Top US military commander concludes trip to East Africa
[Garowe] The US Africa Command boss General Stephen Townsend has concluded his trip to East Africa, Horn of Africa, and the Western side of the continent, in which the fight against al-Shabaab
...... the Islamic version of the old Somali warlord...
prominently featured.

In his company, Townsend was accompanied by Assistant to the President for Homeland Security Dr. Liz Sherwood-Randall, and Assistant Secretary of Defense for Special Operations and Low-Intensity Conflict Chris Maier visited U.S. personnel and operational facilities in Djibouti, Somalia, Kenya, and Niger, Oct. 25-29.

During their trip, the top security officers from the US discussed matters of counterterrorism, with the role of Washington also being evaluated. The US has been a major security partner of the continent and has close to 7000 soldiers across Africa.

The delegation recognized service members at Camp Lemonnier, Djibouti; Mogadishu, Somalia; and Manda Bay, Kenya, who are responsible for supporting local and regional partners executing the counterterrorism campaign against al-Shabaab.

Al-Shabaab gunnies control large swathes of rural central and southern Somalia and have even sprung outside the Horn of Africa nation. Particularly, Somalia has struggled to contain the murderous Moslems, who are keen to topple the fragile UN-backed Somalia administration.

The trip comes at the time the US is evaluating whether to dispatch soldiers to Somalia, just months after unprecedented withdrawal. Initially, there were close to 700 US troops in the country, even as the US continues to support Danab Special Forces.

In Niger, Townsend led the delegation to air bases in Agadez and Niamey to meet with American forces who work with Nigerien partners to monitor and disrupt security threats, support hostage recovery efforts, and project power in West Africa, the US Africa Command noted.

While in Niamey, the delegation met with Nigerien President Mohammed Bazoum and discussed ways to further counter terrorist groups in the Sahel. The party also met with U.S. Embassy officials and with French Ambassador to Niger Alexandre Garcia and Barkhane Force Commander Maj. Gen. Laurent Michon to improve U.S.-French counterterrorism cooperation in the region.

"This trip was a great opportunity to show how our troops across the continent protect the homeland and support our partners to strengthen stability in Africa," said Townsend. "Dr. Sherwood-Randall and I also had a productive meeting with Nigerien President Bazoum, where we discussed our shared efforts to increase security in the Sahel."

Gunfire Wounds 10 Egyptian Peacekeepers in C. Africa

Ten Egyptian peacekeepers from the United Nations
...a formerly good idea gone bad...
Mission in the Central African Republic (MINUSCA) were maimed by shots fired by the presidential guard in Bangui, the U.N. said Tuesday.

The U.N. called the incident, which took place on Monday, "a deliberate and unspeakable attack" on an Egyptian police contingent that was unarmed at the time and travelling in a bus marked U.N.

Members of the Egyptian Constituent Police Unit "came under heavy fire from the presidential guard without prior warning or any response, while they were unarmed," the U.N. said.

The incident happened around 120 meters (yards) from the presidential residence, the U.N. added. In its attempt to leave the area, the bus "hit a woman who lost her life," said MINUSCA, adding that it had "offered its condolences to the victim's family" visited later in the day.

The members of the police unit had arrived earlier on Monday at Bangui airport as part of a periodic rotation and troop deployment in CAR. They were heading towards their base in a bus clearly marked "with U.N. initials," said Vladimir Monteiro, MINUSCA front man.

Bangladesh
In Bangladesh, Artists, Intellectuals Defend Musicians Accused of Insulting Islam
[BenarNews] A well-known secular activist on Tuesday called on the Bangladesh Bar Council to pull the membership of a lawyer who has been filing police complaints against musicians alleging that their performances insult Islam.

The latest case filed by lawyer Imrul Hasan is against members of the rock band Meghdol, claiming that a song they performed at a recent concert distorted a Moslem prayer.

Robin Ahsan, an activist and book publisher, said Imrul was inciting religious conflict.

"Cancellation of the enrollment of lawyer Imrul Hasan is a must to save our country’s songs, Baul songs and our culture," he wrote in a Facebook post.

"The manner [in which] he is filing cases one after the other is not a healthy practice at all. Through such activities, the lawyer is inciting religious intolerance," he said.

An organizer of a progressive citizens’ group, "Shahbagh against Oppression," Robin said he and others would take to the streets if their demand was not met.

"If any member of Meghdol becomes the subject of harassment, we will hold demonstrations demanding the arrest of the lawyer," he said.

Imrul’s earlier police reports against Rita Dewan — a performer of traditional Bengali folk songs — led her to go into hiding after receiving death threats.

"As a lawyer, he [Imrul] has the right to sue on any issue, but such cases violate the spirit of Bangladesh's constitution, as every artist has the freedom to have his or her views," Golam Quddus, the head of an umbrella group of cultural organizations, told BenarNews.

Other cultural activists supported the band members by creating a hashtag, #standwithmeghdol, for social media platforms.

But Imrul said he stood by his case against Meghdol.

"I feel no pressure from such a protest or social media campaign," he told BenarNews.

"Why would I feel pressure when I filed cases to do with defamation of Islam in a Moslem-majority country?"

In his police complaint, Imrul said his "religious sentiment" was hurt after listening to a Meghdol song, and that he had tried but failed to communicate his concern to the band. "Om," the song he referred to, mixes a Hindu hymn with a Moslem one.

In response to the complaint, a Dhaka Metropolitan magistrate instructed the Police Bureau of Investigation to investigate and submit a report by Dec. 1.

Based on Imrul’s earlier police report, a Dhaka tribunal filed charges against Baul singer Dewan and two others on Oct. 25 for allegedly making "derogatory comments" about religion.

In January, Dewan told BenarNews she had been forced into hiding for more than a year after religious zealots threatened to kill her.

"I am in trouble and facing death threats," she told BenarNews at the time.

"But I will continue to sing because this is not only the source of my income, but also a part of my prayers. I feel the blessings and touch of Allah through my songs, which also teach me to hate no one."

Imrul said back then that he planned to continue his legal barrage.

"The Bauls make audacious remarks about Allah," he said.

"Such practices need to be stopped once and for all. I will file more cases to stop this."

German woman charged with membership in foreign terror groups
[IsraelTimes] Federal prosecutors charge a German woman with membership in two foreign terrorist groups, violating weapons law and committing her son as a fighter to a foreign terrorist group.

German federal prosecutors say that Stefanie A., whose last name is withheld in line with privacy rules, left Germany in 2016 with her son, who was 13 at the time, in order to live with her husband in Syrian territory that was then under the control of the Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that they were al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear western pols talk they're not really Moslems....
group.

She first joined the terrorist organization Jund al-Aqsa and later Islamic State, or IS. She is accused of willingly making her son available to the Jund al-Aqsa and to the IS as a fighter.

Shortly after her arrival in Raqqa in Syria in 2017, the defendant joined the IS, initially living with her husband in Raqqa and managing his household. The couple, who were financially provided for by the IS, made their son available to the group. He completed military training and was called up for combat operations. At 15, he was killed in a kaboom in March 2018, the prosecutor’s statement said.

A. herself was equipped with an boom belt and carried a rifle during her membership in IS. She and her husband remained loyal to the Islamic State until the end of the group’s reign, and surrendered to Kurdish troops in February 2019. She was arrested upon her arrival in Germany in March.

Jury is shown moment Kyle Rittenhouse shoots dead BLM protestor and AR-15 he used: Claims he killed two in self-defense because one threatened to kill him and one tried to 'decapitate' him with skateboard, on first day of murder trial
  • [Daily Mail, Where America Gets Its News] The double murder trial for Kenosha shooter Kyle Rittenhouse, 18, kicked off today

  • Rittenhouse is accused of gunning down three people with a military-style semi-automatic rifle last year, killing two and injuring one

  • Prosecutors said Rittenhouse was the only person who shot and killed people despite hundreds of others who were armed amid the chaos

  • The defense claims the first victim threatened to kill Rittenhouse and a friend, and the second tried to 'decapitate' him with his skateboard after a crowd attacked Rittenhouse

  • Defense attorney Mark Richards also said the N-word twice as he echoed the words spoken by one of the victims who was filmed taunting Rittenhouse, who is white, with the slur

  • Rittenhouse was charged with two counts of murder, one of attempted homicide, and two of recklessly endangering safety for firing his weapon near others

  • Dominick Black, who was dating Rittenhouse's sister and referred to him as a brother, said they were defending a local business from rioters and that he got a call from the teen who yelled, 'I shot somebody!'

  • A 20-person jury was selected in one day for the homicide trial, which is expected to last two weeks

#4  There will undoubtedly be some jurors who believe the kid had no business being there with a gun in the first place and has to be guilty of something, so they will vote to convict on something. And likely more who will vote to convict to avoid more riots, anticipating an appeal will fix it for them. Whether those groups add up to a conviction will remain to be seen.

#5  Glenmore, I doubt the jury has the cognitive ability to think that far ahead to the appeals process. In fact they select juries based on their lack of critical thinking

#6  Buggsy, I was on a jury where something like the first scenario came into play. The defendant had clearly committed a crime but we were not able to figure out from the 'reading' of the legal statutes of the charges which (if either) of the charges applied, and of course could get no legal guidance from the judge (just another reading of gobbledy-gook) so we convicted of the lesser charge.
Posted by: Glenmore || 11/03/2021 15:54 Comments || Top||

#7  ^ No doubt the charging process as it's done now is a weakness of our jury system. For one thing, it's like watching a game and then being told what the rules are.

#8  Matt, I was and remain convinced we did the right thing. I was on another jury later and again we 'fought' the legal system to achieve what we believed to be justice. I am amazed at the wisdom of our jury system, and can only encourage all of us to submit to the inconvenience and BS and do their duty.
Posted by: Glenmore || 11/03/2021 16:23 Comments || Top||

#9  ^ Glenmore, a very large majority of judges and lawyers (at least the ones who have seen the inside of a courtroom) would agree with you that juries usually (1) work their tails off to get it right and (2) usually do get it right, as I'm sure your juries did. But the legal system should not require jurors to unmake legal sausage to do their jobs.

It is truly impressive to me to see how seriously jurors take their duties. That's the soul of the Republic in action.
Posted by: Matt || 11/03/2021 16:38 Comments || Top||

#10  It's not uncommon (but hardly a carved in stone rule) that a defense lawyer will tell a likely guilty client to take chances with a jury if they can't get a plea. The same attorney will often tell a likely innocent client to take their chances with a judge alone.

Iraq
Al-Kadhimi: we will pursue the killers
[SHAFAQ] The Iraqi caretaker Prime Minister, Mustafa al-Kadhimi, commended the stance of the Supreme Judicial Council on the case of the manslaughter of Journalist Ahmed Abdul-Samad and the photographer Safaa Ghali.

In a speech he delivered during the cabinet meeting earlier today, Tuesday, "since the establishment of our government, we were frank to our people; the killers of the activists, media professionals, and innocent people will not escape punishment and the fist of law."

Al-Kadhimi said that his government has fulfilled the promises it made to the people, "particularly the election, Justice, and economic reforms."

"We pursued the groups that were involved in the Murders. We successfully apprehended the killers of Hisham al-Hashemi and Ahmed Abdul-Samad, and we will continue to pursue whoever is involved in the Iraqi bloodshed."

"We endorse the Judiciary's independence. We do not seek vengeance, we only want justice," he concluded.

Iraq's supreme court has sentenced a man to death by hanging for the killing of two prominent Iraqi journalists last year, known for their coverage of anti-government protests in the southern city of Basra.

Ahmed Abdul Samad, a Dijlah TV news hound, and Safaa Ghali, his cameraman, were found shot and killed in a car parked near a cop shoppe on January 10, 2020. Their deaths were part of a wave of assassinations against activists and journalists covering the protest movement that erupted in late October 2019.

For months, tens of thousands of protesters in the Iraqi capital of Baghdad and the predominantly Shiite southern provinces had taken to the streets to rally against endemic corruption and call for reforms. Over 600 people died as security forces used live ammunition and tear gas to disperse crowds.

The movement eventually petered out, in part because of the government’s heavy-handed response and the worsening coronavirus (aka COVID19 or Chinese Plague)
...the twenty first century equivalent of bubonic plague, only instead of killing off a third of the population of Europe it kills 3.4 percent of those who notice they have it. It seems to be fond of the elderly, especially Iranian politicians and holy men...
pandemic.

Protesters have largely blamed Iran-backed militia groups for carrying out killings that specifically targeted activists and journalists.

The court in Basra said the man convicted in the killing of the two journalists confessed to his crimes. It said he killed them with the aim of "destabilizing security and stability to achieve terrorist goals."

The court provided no details about the man’s identity or affiliation with any Death Eater or other groups. The case is now with a higher court, which can either confirm the death penalty
, hand down a lesser sentence or call for a retrial.

Mohammed Samad, the brother of the slain news hound, told The News Agency that Dare Not be Named over the phone that he blames four people for the killing "but only one was brought to court."

He identified the convicted killer as Hamza Kadhim al-Aidani, "a police officer who had worked at the same court that sentenced him today."

"Our happiness will be complete when their leader is brought to trial as he is currently on the run," he added.

The compromise "prepares the way for our right to the land to be taken away," the families say in a statement.

Hackers release stolen medical data of 290,000 Israeli patients
[IsraelTimes] The Iran-linked hacking group, Black Shadow, uploads what it says is the full database of personal information from Israel’s Machon Mor medical institute, with information on some 290,000 patients.

It is the second major leak today by the group. Earlier in the day, it released what it said was the full database of personal user information from the Atraf website, an LGBTQ dating service and nightlife index.

Cyber experts immediately warned against downloading the files the group releases.

The group uploaded the Atraf file to a channel on the Telegram messaging app after a ransom demand of $1 million in digital currency to prevent the leak was apparently not paid.

Black Shadow had initially hacked the CyberServe Israeli internet hosting company on Friday, taking down its servers and a number of sites, among them Atraf.

Iran FM tests positive for COVID at key moment for nuclear talks
Insh’allah. It’ll be fun to see if Allah wants to fire him from his current employment.
[IsraelTimes] Iran’s foreign minister has tested positive for COVID-19, local media reports, at a key moment in diplomatic efforts to revive a nuclear agreement with major powers.

Hossein Amir-Abdollahian "tested positive today for coronavirus (aka COVID19 or Chinese Plague)
...the twenty first century equivalent of bubonic plague, only instead of killing off a third of the population of Europe it kills 3.4 percent of those who notice they have it. It seems to be fond of the elderly, especially Iranian politicians and holy men...
," the Tasnim news agency reports.

The 57-year-old career diplomat, who was named foreign minister in August by ultraconservative President Ebrahim Raisi, was a close confidant of military strategist General Qassem Soleimani
who was assassinated in a US dronezap early last year.

"His general health is satisfactory and he is continuing his daily duties from quarantine," ministry front man Saeed Khatibzadeh tells the official IRNA news agency.

Khatibzadeh had said just Monday that talks with the remaining parties to the 2015 nuclear deal would resume "in the next two or three weeks," although he added that ministers would not take part.

The talks have been on hold since before Raisi’s election in June.

Iran says its fuel system is fully operational a week after cyber attack
[IsraelTimes] Iran’s fuel distribution system resumed full operations today, a week after it was paralyzed by a cyber attack, authorities say.

"The country’s 4,300 service stations are once again connected to the central fuel distribution system," the spokesperson of the Iranian National Oil Product Distribution Company, Fatemeh Kahi, says in a statement. "From now on, all the service stations will be able to supply subsidized petrol using the digital cards," Kahi adds.

A cyber attack on October 26 brought all fuel distribution stations in the country to a halt, resulting in traffic jams and long lines at gas stations. The attack prompted sharp responses from top Iranian officials, who blamed outside actors.

On Sunday, leading Iranian general Gholamreza Jalali accused the United States and Israel of being behind the attack.

...The Leb civil war, between 1975 and 1990, lasted a little over 145 years and produced 120,000 fatalities. The average length of a ceasefire was measured in seconds. That's three statements, only the first of which is subjective....

Bitar Reportedly Vows Not to Bow to 'Pressures or Threats'
[An Nahar] Judge Tarek Bitar, the lead investigative judge probing the Beirut port blast, stressed to the families of the victims on Tuesday that "pressures or threats will not push him to back down," al-Jadeed TV reported.

"I will not back down from the Beirut port file unless I’m removed through the available legal means," al-Jadeed quoted Bitar as telling the families during a meeting on Tuesday.

"Bitar told the families of the deaders that he is continuing the investigation and all its aspects in a simultaneous manner and that the issue of selectivity is baseless, seeing as the probe is summoning anyone who received and looked into a memo related to the port file," the TV network added.

He also told the families that some of those charged have wrongfully accused him of only tackling one part of the file, emphasizing that this claim is unfounded and that "the probe cannot be revealed because it is confidential."

March 8 Forces Want 'Price' for Kordahi Resignation
[An Nahar] The Hizbullah
...Party of God, a Leb militia inspired, founded, funded and directed by Iran. Hizbullah refers to itself as The Resistance and purports to defend Leb against Israel, with whom it has started and lost one disastrous war to date, though it did claim victory...
-led March 8 forces
... the opposition to the Mar. 14th movement, consisting of Hizbullah and its allies, so-called in commemoration of their Mar. 8th, 2006 demonstration of strength in Beirut ...
have not completely closed the door in the face of the possibility of the resignation of Information Minister George Kordahi, highly informed sources said.

March 8 would accept such a move "for the sake of keeping the government, after they sensed seriousness in its premier’s intention to resign should intransigence continue," the sources added, in remarks to the Nidaa al-Watan newspaper.

"The political sides concerned with negotiating over ’Kordahi’s head’ seemed over the past hours open to the choice of his resignation, but they are still refraining from offering this card without something in return," the sources went on to say.

The sources added that the discussions are currently focused on "the price that can be obtained on the dialogue table with Saudi Arabia
...a kingdom taking up the bulk of the Arabian peninsula. Its primary economic activity involves exporting oil and soaking Islamic rubes on the annual hajj pilgrimage. The country supports a large number of princes in whatcha might call princely splendor. Fifteen of the nineteen WTC hijackers were Saudis, and most major jihadi commanders were Saudis, to include Osama bin Laden. Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman quietly folded that tent in 2016, doing terrible things to the guys running it, and has since been dragging the kingdom into the current century...
in return for moving forward with this choice."
