Rantburg is back, bay-bee!
The horrific interregnum is over!

According to Gloria, Fred Pruitt is officially recovered from Covid-19, and so was released from the hospital to a rehab center. He is still very weak after nearly a month in the ICU that started shortly after Christmas. Current projections are that he will be in rehab for another 7-10 days, but he has his tablet, and was able to talk Gloria and her loyal assistant through restarting the server that went down just before we published the first set of articles nineteen days ago. Thank goodness he finished and debugged the changeover before all that happened!

So all the articles here are the news from January 3rd that were never seen by any except the moderators, just to give us something to take the edge off before properly sinking our teeth into it for tomorrow. Lots has happened, mostly in the U.S., but around the world the ripples from the Trump years continue to spread, thank goodness.
Whoop Whoop!
Welcome back!

...... al-Qaeda's tentacle in East Africa...
murderous Moslems as U.S. troops continue to pull out of the country, officials with U.S. Africom Command said.

The two New Year's Day airstrikes hit al-Shabaab compounds, destroying two according to the initial assessment. No non-combatants were killed or injured, officials said.

The U.S. conducted at least 51 airstrikes in Somalia last year, compared to 63 in 2019 and 47 in 2018, according to AFRICOM.

The New Year's Day strikes were the third since the Defense Department announced Dec. 4 that most of the 700-800 U.S. troops in the country were pulling out. President Donald Trump
...Oh, noze! Not him!...
ordered the withdrawal, which is being conducted under the name Operation Octave Quartz.

Army Gen. Stephen Townsend, the AFRICOM commander, described the operation as a "directed repositioning" of troops to countries neighboring Somalia.

"To be clear, the U.S. is not withdrawing or disengaging from East Africa," Townsend said in a Dec. 19 statement. "We remain committed to helping our African partners build a more secure future."

As has been AFRICOM's practice, the type of aircraft used in the New Year's Day strikes were not specified.

, included two women and 17 minors and were suffering from hypothermia.

A Spanish-flagged humanitarian ship on Sunday was seeking a port of safety for 265 migrants colonists its crew rescued from the Mediterranean Sea in the last few days.

The Open Arms charity tweeted that its vessel on Saturday had safely brought aboard 96 migrants colonists who had been adrift in a wooden boat with without life vests in international waters.

It said the passengers, most of them from Eritrea, included two women and 17 minors and were suffering from hypothermia.

In a separate operation two days before that rescue, Open Arms took aboard 169 migrants colonists, who had departed Libyan shores, where many human traffickers are based.

The traffickers launch vessels, many of them flimsy rubber dinghies or rickety fishing boats, crowded with migrants colonists who hope to reach European shores to seek asylum.

Some are fleeing conflict or persecution, but many of the hundreds of thousands of migrants colonists who have been rescued at sea in recent years are fleeing poverty and thus are denied asylum by European Union

countries.

Italia and fellow EU nation Malta have often refused docking permission to the humanitarian rescue boats, contending that most migrants colonists want to reach jobs or relatives in northern Europe.

Italian and Maltese government authorities have insisted other European nations do their share.

Airstrike kills two ISIS militants in Kirkuk province: Iraqi military
[Rudaw] Two Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that they were al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're really very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear western pols talk they're not really Moslems....
(ISIS) snuffies have been killed in an Arclight airstrike
...KABOOM!...
on Kirkuk province, the Iraqi military’s official media source said on Sunday.

The airstrike were conducted by F-16 planes on Wadi al-Kour in the province's Daquq district, according to a statement from Iraqi Security Media Cell published by Iraqi state media.

Though ISIS was declared militarily defeated in Iraq in December 2017, remnants of the terrorist group have been able to continue conducting attacks in territory disputed between the central government in Baghdad and the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG), where security is patchy. Kirkuk was under Kurdish control until October 2017, when Iraqi forces retook the disputed territories following the KRG’s failed independence referendum.

Attacks by ISIS have included ambushes on security forces, the kidnap and execution of suspected informants, and extortion from vulnerable rural populations.

Two Kirkuk residents were kidnapped by ISIS and released for $40,000 in November after being held in captivity for six months.

Two wells were bombed at Kirkuk’s Khabbaz oilfield on December 9, an attack ISIS later grabbed credit for.

ISIS also grabbed credit for an IED explosion in the village of Palkana in November, which killed two Iraqi security force members.

On Thursday, ISIS claimed in its weekly propaganda newspaper al-Naba that it had killed and injured at least seven people in Iraq in the previous week.

Two ISIS snuffies were killed in a federal police operation in al-Rashad district, southwest Kirkuk province on December 26, and the Iraqi Counter-Terrorism Service (ICTS) arrested two ISIS snuffies in an operation in Kirkuk on December 29.

Israeli forces allegedly close off Lebanese border settlement over security concerns
[AlMasdar] On Sunday, the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) declared the settlement of Metula on the border with Leb

a "closed military zone."

The Hebrew-language Channel 20 news reported on Sunday that the IDF announced the continuing closure of Metula adjacent to the Lebanese border, a "closed military zone", in conjunction with the commemoration of the first anniversary of the liquidation of the commander of the Quds Force, General Qassem Soleimani

Channel 20 reported that Iranian threats to retaliate for the liquidation of the nuclear scientist, Mohsen Fakhrizadeh, increased the tension in the region. Therefore, the Israeli Northern Command took a decision to close the settlement.

Syria-Lebanon-Iran
Large Turkish army column of reinforcements heads to northwestern Syria
[AlMasdar] The Ottoman Turkish military sent a new column of reinforcements to the northwestern region of Syria this week, following some attacks on their forces in the Aleppo Governorate.

According to a report on Saturday, the Ottoman Turkish Armed Forces came under attack by sniper fire near the key city of al-Bab in northeastern Aleppo; this prompted the latter to respond with heavy artillery on the positions of the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) and People’s Protection Units (YPG).

The Ottoman Turkish military has since sent reinforcements through the Kafr Lousen crossing that links the Hatay Province and the Idlib Governorate.

Several reports on Sunday said that dozens of soldiers were transported to northwestern Syria, as they were escorted by heavily armed vehicles that will likely be used on their military patrols with their Russian counterparts in northwestern Syria.

The Sick Man of Europe Turkey
...the occupiers of Greek Asia Minor...
has been deploying a large number of troops to northwestern Syria since 2018, when they first established observation posts in the Aleppo, Latakia, Hama and Idlib governorates.

Most recently, the Ottoman Turkish military has withdrawn from several observation posts after they were besieged by the Syrian Arab Army (SAA) in early 2020.

The Syrian Arab Army is now in full control of these observation posts that previously belonged to the Ottoman Turkish Armed Forces.

Suspected ISIS fighters ambush passenger bus in eastern Hama: 6 killed
[AlMasdar] A passenger bus was targeting while it was traveling through the eastern countryside of the Hama Governorate, a government report said this evening.

According to the report, a group of gunnies targeted the passenger bus as it was traveling along the Salamiyah-Ithriya Road, resulting in a number of casualties, including six deaths.

The report said the casualties were all civilians, adding that the maimed were transferred to a local hospital in the al-Salamiyah District of eastern Hama.

No group has grabbed credit for this attack; however, a source in the Hama Governorate said that festivities broke out shortly after the attack on the bus.

The source said the Syrian Arab Army (SAA) and local National Defense Forces (NDF) believe the attack was carried out by a group of Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that they were al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. (ISIS/ISIS/IS/ISIS) fighters that are active in the eastern region of Hama.

It is noteworthy to mention that last week, the Islamic State carried out a similar attack using a roadside kaboom along the Palmyra-Deir Ezzor Highway in eastern Homs.

The Islamic State attack on the passenger bus in eastern Homs resulted in 20 soldiers and 8 civilians killed, along with several more maimed.

Three Executed in Iran for 'Terrorist' Acts and Murder
[AnNahar] Iran's judiciary hanged two men on Sunday for "terrorist acts" and another for murder and armed robbery, the body's official Mizan Online news agency said.

The three were executed early Sunday morning in the southeastern Sistan-Balochistan
...the Pak province bordering Kandahar and Uruzgun provinces in Afghanistan and Sistan Baluchistan in Iran. Its native Baloch propulation is being displaced by Pashtuns and Punjabis and they aren't happy about it...
province.

Two were named as Hassan Dehvari and Elias Qalandarzehi, arrested in April 2014 after being found with "a large amount of explosives" and weapons.

The pair were convicted of the abduction, bombing, murder of security forces and civilians, and of working with the jihadist Jaish al-Adl ("Army of Justice") group, Mizan said.

Dehvari and Qalandarzehi were also arrested in possession of documents from Jaish al-Adl on "how to make bombs" as well as "takfiri
...an adherent of takfir wal hijra, an offshoot of Salafism that regards everybody who doesn't agree with them as apostates who most be killed...
fatwas", terms used by Iran's Shiite authorities to refer to decrees issued by Sunni jihadists.

Jaish al-Adl has carried out several high-profile bombings and abductions in Iran
...a theocratic Shiite state divided among the Medes, the Persians, and the (Arab) Elamites. Formerly a fairly civilized nation ruled by a Shah, it became a victim of Islamic revolution in 1979. The nation is today noted for spontaneously taking over other countries' embassies, maintaining whorehouses run by clergymen, involvement in international drug trafficking, and financing sock puppet militias to extend the regime's influence. The word Iran is a cognate form of Aryan. The abbreviation IRGC is the same idea as Stürmabteilung (or SA). The term Supreme Guide is a the modern version form of either Duce or Führer or maybe both. in recent years.

In February 2019, 27 members of Iran's Revolutionary Guards were killed in a suicide kaboom claimed by the group.

Jaish al-Adl was formed in 2012 as a successor to Sunni hard boy group Jundallah
..."Soldiers of God," a name used by two multiple separate terror outfits, one active in Iran and the other in Pakistain. Both are Sunni organizations that target Shiites. The Pak version has close relations with al-Qaeda and the Pak Talibs and is probably a false nose and mustache for Lashkar-e-Jhangvi...
("Soldiers of God"), which waged a deadly insurgency for a decade before it was severely weakened by the capture and execution of its leader Abdolmalek Rigi in 2010.

The third man executed was named as Omid Mahmoudzehi. He was convicted of armed robbery and the murder of civilians, Mizan said.

Rudaw’s take:
Iran’s executions of religious minorities continue unabated

Iranian authorities executed at least six prisoners in recent days, including members of minority groups, part of what an activist called a wave of executions that is angering the people.

Iran has repeatedly used the death penalty to silence dissent and in the early hours of Sunday morning executed Hassan Dehvari and Elias Qlandarzehi, state-run IRNA reported.

The two Sunni prisoners, Baluchis, were put into isolation on Friday in anticipation of their execution, according to their lawyer. Mohammad Reza Faqihi said his clients were taken into solitary confinement on Friday despite appealing their death sentence and requesting a retrial. The two prisoners were detained in 2015 and sentenced to death in December 2016.

A third prisoner, Omid Mahmoud Zehi, was executed reportedly for murder on Sunday.

A few days earlier, on Thursday, authorities put to death another three Sunni prisoners in Adalatabad prison in Mashhad. The executions were carried out without informing the families.

“The sentences of Hamid Rastbala, Kabir Saadat-Jahani and Mohammadl Ali Arayesh, the Sunni prisoners, were carried out on Thursday … in Mashhad,” Human Rights Activists News Agency (HRANA) reported on Friday.

Hamid Rastbala had written a letter in the summer in which he said he was under relentless pressure to make televised confessions and described the torture the prisoners experienced. “Some of us were pepper-sprayed in our genitals and anus,” Rastbala wrote. Some of the charges “are related to 1996, while I was 12 at the time.”

The three men were part of a group of ten people who were detained in 2016 and kept in solitary confinement for 10 to 12 months. The detainees were mostly in their early teens at the time and were charged with membership in al-Furqan, a Sunni Salafi group that was active in Iran in the 1990s.

In late December, at least five Baluchi prisoners were put into solitary confinement in anticipation of their execution, their lawyer Mostafa Nili said. Two were later executed.

Baluchis are a mainly Sunni ethnic minority in Iran, mainly living in the southeastern Baluchestan region, near the border with Pakistan. Abdollah Aref, the head of Baloch Campaign that highlights human rights violations in the Sistan and Baluchestan area of Iran, said authorities have executed people because of the activities of their relatives.

"Hasan Dehvari was utterly innocent. His brother is active against the regime. He was detained because of his brother,” Aref told Rudaw English via WhatsApp.

This was not the first time a family member paid the price of a relative’s actions. "A few years ago, the authorities executed 16 Baluch citizens because their relatives were involved in anti- government activities," said Aref. Iran claims these individuals were involved in anti-establishment activities and were charged with rebellion against the state.
