Update on Sgt McNulty's case against Jay R Grodner
Update 12-31-07 2000 CST: A Blackfive reader sends this update about the hearing today...

Attn: Black Five

I am writing to produce an update of the results of Sgt McNulty's case against Jay R Grodner. I was present in support of Mike and thought you may be interested in an update for this story.

Sgt McNulty was called forward by the State's Attorney in order to discuss the case. I am not sure what transpired behind the closed doors, however, I overheard the State's Attorney expressing her intent to prosecute this guy to the fullest extent. It seems as if BlackFive is the sole catalyst to this story getting out and I am sure Sgt McNulty has probably heard the effect of yours and other blogs from the results of today's proceedings to include several Marines and civilians who showed up in his support.

Jay R Grodner was called before court and in his absence, the Judge issued a warrant for his arrest effective immediately. Sgt McNulty was departing the court when Grodner rolled in to the courtroom more pathetic than anyone I had ever seen. The Judge had questioned him on his tardiness and he explained that traffic had been busy and he 'made a wrong turn'. The Judge chastised him for his tardiness, pathetic excuses, and that he was lucky the warrant had not been executed prior to his arrival.

It seems the blogosphere has put the ball in Sgt McNulty's court. Furthermore, it is also apparent that the State's Attorney's Office has decided to take this matter on a much more serious level. A new and very aggressive State's Attorney seems to have a genuine interest in pursuing this case to the extent that it warrants.

A lot of good people deserve our thanks today. Thousands responded with emails and phone calls and some even went to support Mike at the hearing. Thank you. I've said it before and I'll say it again - Blackfive and military blogs have the best readers on the planet - we really are a true community.

Crime and Punishment, California Style
VICTORVILLE - A man who escaped prison time for having sex with the corpse of a 4-year-old girl is behind bars after pleading no contest to animal cruelty, a violation of his probation.

Donald Luis Cooper, who worked in 2003 for a firm transporting bodies from Victor Valley Community Hospital to the San Bernardino County coroner's office, was arrested after a morgue security camera recorded the sex assault. The Adelanto preschooler had died of the flu.

Cooper wasn't charged with necrophilia because it wasn't illegal in California at the time. He pleaded guilty to mutilating grave remains and received a suspended two-year prison sentence and was placed on five years' probation.

Earlier this month, sheriff's deputies were called to a feces-stained, urine-soaked Hesperia home where Cooper, 32, lived with three other adults, seven children and 31 animals. "There were animal feces and urine on the floor, in the children's room, the living room. There were feces on the wall," Code Enforcement supervisor Tony Genovesi said.

Cooper was arrested and charged with seven counts of willful cruelty to a child with the possibility of injury or death. He pleaded no contest to a single count of animal cruelty and the other charges were dismissed. But the no contest plea violated his probation and the two-year prison sentence was reinstated, Supervising Deputy District Attorney Gary Roth said. Cooper is serving his sentence at the California Institution for Men in Chino.

"The guy shouldn't be around children," said Assemblywoman Sharon Runner, who sponsored the legislation in 2004 making necrophilia a felony.

Off topic, anyone savvy on what really happened with that oil spill in San Fran bay? Local friend says that they were *literally* asleep at the helm which I seriously doubt. I'm no ocean captain but I would imagine there would be some bells and whistles much like an air liner.

#5  swksvolFF: typically a (local) harbor pilot is required to be at the helm during operations in ports like San Diego, San Francisco, etc. It wouldn't have been the Koreans, IIUC

#6  Good point Frank G. It even makes less sense now. Maybe weather conditions, I don't know - just what my friend said didn't jive and the story disappeared from mainstream real quick like.

#7  They blamed it on the Coast Gaurd for seeing the ship leave the channel but not notifying it of the danger. The daily conditions almost always involve fog. They were definitely traveling too fast for the prevailing conditions ... if they had anyone topside keeping a visual watch. If they were steering by radar only, the pilons would have been obscured by the bridge. I don't think that pilots are required through that area. Probably just to come pierside. I imagine that the traffic is so heavy that it would not be feasible to require a pilot for all bridge transits, unless the plan was to Shanghai all the homeless in Golden Gate Park and provide them with nautical training. Very few of them would be fluent in Cantonese anyway.

I have some experience on large ships but not of that size. I now live in the SF area, but I also have never sailed in the harbor. I would imagine that there are unhelpful currents based on the TV I have watched concerning Alcatraz escape attempts.

Home Front Economy
Taxachusetts Turns Mean
Penalties for Massachusetts residents who can afford health insurance but do not purchase it in 2008 could quadruple compared with the maximum penalty in 2007, according to draft regulations released by the Department of Revenue yesterday.

The maximum penalty for those who flout the law and do not buy health insurance would be $912 a year, compared to $219 in 2007.

The higher penalty is intended to get those who are on the fence to buy health insurance. For those wavering, it could make more sense to pay for insurance than to pay the penalty.

#2  uh huh...gonna apply to illegals? Didn't think so
Posted by: Frank G || 01/01/2008 11:14 Comments || Top||

#3  You are right, Frank. But if we could get the illegal situation under control, I think that this could be a good idea if administered farily and correctly. We have to do something to get health insurance under control and looking to auto insurance might be a good way of approaching it.

We pay for the illegals in decreased cost of goods. Of course low cost housing cost housing, health insurance, law inforcement, bad schools and other related expenses cost us, the taxpayers, way more than a few cents per head of lettuce. Not to mention the moral issues of keeping an entire percentage of our population in a sub-citizen status. But if we COULD get the illegal situation to end {big could) then I think something like this could actual help prevent the rise of state controlled health care.

'MS-13' vandals deface Vietnam memorial
Vandals claiming a relationship to the violent Hispanic street gang MS-13 defaced a Vietnam War memorial in Connecticut with graffiti, angering local veterans. "Kill whites MS 13" were among the threatening words spray-painted on the Vietnam War Memorial at Long Wharf, Conn., reported WTNH-TV in New Haven.

"This irks me. This hurts me deep to my heart," Vietnam Army veteran Emery Linton Sr. told the station.

Linton, who served in Vietnam from 1969 to 1972, noted he lost friends there and called the mess on the memorial a slap in the face to veterans who made the ultimate sacrifice for their country. "People here respect these names. They gave their lives for everything, for the freedoms they have," Linton said.

Police are investigating whether the vandalism is the work of the violent MS-13 gang.
I'm suspicious. MS-13 has a stylized 'logo' that they use on their graffiti. This is 'plain text'.

#6  Have to agree with Anonymoose - not MS-13 style. Also, P2K is right.

A chickenshit act made more chickenshit by blaming it on someone else, someone else who may have an interest in finding out who dunnit as well; especially so if those offenders are not certified MS-13.

#7  VN vets seem like an odd group to antagonize. While they are thoroughly and justifiably revered by the right, many of them are pillars of the left.

Sgt. Mom Gets Instalanched (sort of)
Great news, one and all - this afternoon Glenn Reynolds linked to an entry on the Classical Values blog which praises To Truckee's Trail to high heaven (as is its due, of course).

Hope you've got those books stocked up, Mom!

And Happy New Year, one and all. :-D

#2  I dunno. From the review it sounded totally unsuited to our post-modern world. Who wants to read about families facing hardship, showing personal courage and struggling to make a new life?

Don't you have something with dead white guys brutally oppressing the innocent pastoral Commanches or beating their innocent pastoral mules or something? And by dead white guys, I mean dead white persons since the West was settled by our pioneer forefathers *and* foremothers.

Ok, I'm stopping now. It sounds like a great book. Congrats, Sgt. Mom!

#4  I am now reading "The Rise of Theodore Roosevelt" by Edmond Morris which is also about hardship and indomitable spirit albeit by a blue blood who was tough(er) than nails. And thinking about all Teddy accomplished before he was 28 years old makes you wonder about all these 40 to 60 somethings running for President with the qualifications of couch potato. Hell, Teddy wrote 3 books, all diverse (Naval War Strategy, Natural History and Biography) by his 27th birthday. He had set up his ranches in Dakota Territory, hunted and led the western life - even captured a dangerous band of bandits who had stolen his river boat. Why can't we get people like this to lead the country? Because we have become soft as Charmin, that's why. When you read Celia's book and Teddy's biography, you sit back and say that no way is my son or daughter going to end up in front of the TV playing inane games. Outside and don't come back until something is broken!

#7  Outside and don't come back until something is broken!

As a child, I adored the Just William books by Richmal Crompton. Enid Blyton's books I refused to read because I was completely unable to relate to the characters.

William was a child with a child's view of the world and adventures that invariably got him into trouble with adults. He would end up breaking something. Enid Blyton's characters were essentially little adults whose views and actions meshed with the adult world.

45 years later the Just William books are impossible to find, while Enid Blyton's books are widely available.

I find this a depressing comment on the modern world's inability to let children just be children.

BTW, congrats SgtMom. I hope your book is a big success.
