Joey Bishop dead at 89
The Rat Pack is gone...
LOS ANGELES - Joey Bishop, the stone-faced comedian who found success in nightclubs, television and movies but became most famous as a member of Frank Sinatra's Rat Pack, has died at 89.

He was the group's last surviving member. Peter Lawford died in 1984, Sammy Davis Jr. in 1990, Dean Martin in 1995, and Sinatra in 1998.

Bishop died Wednesday night of multiple causes at his home in Newport Beach, publicist and longtime friend Warren Cowen said.

French President Sarkozy, Wife Separate
PARIS (AP) - French President Nicolas Sarkozy and his wife, Cecilia, are separating by mutual consent after nearly 11 years of marriage, his office said Thursday.

The announcement ended weeks of speculation about troubles in their marriage and came as Sarkozy is facing the first major challenge of his five-month presidency: crippling nationwide transportation strikes. The three-line, 15-word statement did not mention the word divorce, and said the two would not comment on the separation. Sarkozy was in Portugal for a European Union summit.

The Sarkozys separated for several months in 2005, getting back together as the presidential campaign moved into high gear. However, Cecilia Sarkozy has rarely appeared with her husband in public since.

On Wednesday, the respected newsweekly The National Enquirer Le Nouvel Observateur reported on its Web site that Sarkozy, 52, and his 49-year-old wife appeared before a judge on Monday, and told him that they are seeking a legal separation. The report did not cite any sources.

News channel LCI gave a different version, saying Cecilia Sarkozy saw a judge alone Monday and the judge later visited the presidential Elysee Palace to give Sarkozy a document to countersign.

Rumors of the split has sparked debate among experts over whether the constitution even allows them to divorce.
IIUC, thanks to the gerry-rigging made by shirak to give himself Presidential Immunity™.
Two experts argued in a full-page commentary Wednesday in daily Liberation that Article 67 of the constitution, added to bolster presidential protection, prevents anyone, including a spouse, from bringing a legal action against the president. Even divorce by mutual consent could be complicated because of the strong legal protections designed to keep sitting presidents out of court.
So here's an opportunity for Nick to show that he's not above the law.
Both Sarkozys have been married before. They have two children each from their previous marriages, as well as their own son, Louis.

As far as I know, the penal immunity of the president was first tinkered by a commission in 2002, when France had to adapt its laws to the international court through the conseil constitutionnel, and then in 2007, right before shirak left office (art 67 of the constitution). Before shirak, the question wasn't even asked, and the responses that were made were IMHO made on the express purpose he could escape any kind of trouble with the law. But, again, I'm no constitutionalist, and I spent my aborted years in law school stoned and drunken, so...

Indian villagers find ancient treasure
Villagers in northern India have found a treasure trove of copper items including a figurine, coins, a harpoon and rings that could be 4,000 years old, an archaeological official said Wednesday. “It was an accidental find by the villagers,” said Rakesh Tewari, Uttar Pradesh state’s archaeology chief. Police seized the pieces, which were acquired by the state archaeology department in August, Tewari said.

Tewari estimated the articles could date as far back as 2000 to 1200 BC, saying they appeared similar to or older than objects associated with the late Harappan culture that existed in the Indus valley more than 3,000 years ago. Researchers hope to excavate the site where the objects were found, Tewari said.

-Signs, Portents, and the Weather-
DELAWARE: Aviation officials puzzled about so-called UFO that slammed vehicle
It didn’t come from an airplane.

The mystery about the origin of a 16-inch, unidentified falling object that fell from the sky Monday and sliced “like butter” through the hood of a parked vehicle deepened Tuesday, after an official with the Federal Aviation Administration announced that whatever it is, it’s not a piece of aircraft.

At about 4 p.m. Monday, the brownish, hook-shaped piece of metal crashed through the roof of an unoccupied 2007 Mitsubishi Outlander parked at the Happy Harry’s drugstore at 536 Main St. in Stanton. Its arrival came with a boom that one witness told Mill Creek Fire Company Chief James Howell sounded like an explosion.

The SUV’s owner, Susan Wilson, said she was inside the drugstore at the time. When she returned to her car, she found ash and debris on the driver’s seat and gaping hole in the vehicle’s roof. Nestled on the rear passenger side floor she found the hot object still smoldering from its descent.

“The metal was still too hot to handle,” Delaware State Police spokesman Cpl. Jeff Whitmarsh said.

Once the mysterious object had cooled down, it was turned over to the FAA personnel from the Philadelphia office. The federal agency was doing some last procedural work on the object Tuesday, but FAA spokesman Jim Peters said he’s confident it didn’t come from any plane.

Wilson, of Wilmington and her fiance Michael Roberto have struggled with how to deal with the aftermath of the object falling from the sky. Their SUV has been towed to a repair shop and the couple is waiting on the bill. Lacking answers to what launched the hunk of metal, Wilson’s insurance has asked her to pay the deductible for the damage.

#3  "...Lacking answers to what launched the hunk of metal..."

Sounds like her Insurance Co. is wrestling with whether to classify the incident under a comprehensive claim or an outright denial under the 'Act Of God' conditions. Ms. Wilson should have kept the projectile for inspection and or retention by her Insurance co, until final claim settlement to her satisfaction. Turning the piece over to the FAA...Why, there were no known airplane collisions overhead?! Just as well could have consigned it over to the NFL for that reason!!

Britain
NHS Dentistry: Pull Out Yer Own Bloody Teeth
Falling numbers of NHS dentists are forcing many patients to go without treatment or even try pulling out their own teeth, a study has revealed.

Almost a fifth (19%) of those questioned said they had missed out on dental work because of the cost. The research found 6% had even resorted to treating themselves because they could not find a dentist.
Too bad Bob Hope isn't still around ...
The 5,000-plus patients who were interviewed also spoke of taking out their own teeth or fixing broken crowns with glue. One person in Lancashire said he had carried out 14 separate extractions with a pair of pliers.

Roger from London told the Your Stories section of the Sky News website that he combines visits to the dentist with holidays in Egypt. "I was quoted over £2,000 for a bridge by a dentist in the UK. I had two weeks in a five-star hotel all inclusive. "Two visits to the dentist my bridge fixed in. Went diving and came home with change from £1,300."

Health Minister Ben Bradshaw told Sky News it was a myth that everyone used to be able to get free dental treatment on the NHS. "At its very highest it was 60% in this country, now it's 56%. We have always paid for dental care, even on the NHS," he said. He said people in urgent need should always be able to get NHS treatment but it would only be free for some people, like children, those on benefits and pregnant women.

Mr Bradshaw said the Labour Government had increased the number of NHS dentists and brought down the maximum cost of complex treatment. "There are now 4,000 more than there were in 1997, we are moving in the right direction, but there are still problems and I am very sorry about that."

Almost three fifths (58%) of dentists blamed new contracts brought in by the Government last year. Four out of 10 (41%) felt they had an "excessive" workload with 29% saying they had problems recruiting or retaining dentists.

More than 5,200 patients and 750 dentitsts were interviewed as part of the Dentistry Watch survey carried out by the PPI Forums.

#2  The cost of dentistry isn't that high, especially relative to other areas of health costs. I'm guessing that if most of these people gave up cigarettes and pints for a couple of months they could get at least minimal functional work done.

My sister's neighbor has rotting teeth, tells everyone he "can't afford" the dentist, but he owns three ATV's and a boat. I suspect that a huge chunk of those who claim they "can't afford" at least minimal maintenance and fillings are like him and could afford to do so if they cut back a few creature comforts.

I also suspect that there are very, very few people who are poor enough that having routine dental care will cause them to starve yet not so poor that they don't qualify for Medicaid dentistry.

It's more about priorities than truly being unaffordable. Put up the sympathy meter graphic, please.

Europe
U.S. Treasure Hunter Freed in Spain Spat
Follow-up.
MADRID, Spain - The captain of a treasure-hunting ship intercepted in a dispute over a $500 million undersea find was released Wednesday after being held overnight for questioning in a southern Spanish port city, his company said.

Sterling Vorus was detained after his ship, the Odyssey Explorer, was seized Tuesday as it sailed into Spanish waters from the British colony of Gibraltar off Spain's southern tip, police said. Spain's Civil Guard held Vorus overnight in the port city of Algeciras after Vorus refused to let officers board his ship, Odyssey Marine Exploration co-chairman Greg Stemm said in Florida. Police searched the vessel on Wednesday, he said.
I'd imagine the OME people knew this was going to happen and made sure the ship was squeeky clean.
Culture Minister Cesar Antonio Molina said the government views Odyssey as modern-day pirates. "There have always been navies, laws and the rule of law to help combat pirates," Molina told reporters.

Odyssey has insisted the shipwreck -- codenamed "Black Swan" -- was in international waters, but has not given the exact location or the ship's name. Stemm insisted that Odyssey's activities are legitimate and transparent. "This whole thing is so crazy," he said. He refused to comment on news reports saying Odyssey removed high-tech equipment from the Explorer before Spanish investigators boarded the ship.

Tribal violence kills 8 in Indonesia
Rival tribes armed with bows and arrows clashed close to a US-owned gold mine in Indonesia's Papua region, killing eight people, media reports said Thursday.

At least 19 others were injured in the fighting Wednesday, The Jakarta Post and other media reported. Authorities in the remote region in eastern Indonesia were not immediately available for comment.

The fighting broke out in villages close to a giant gold and copper mine operated by Freeport-McMoRan Copper and Gold Mine Inc. Production at the mine was not effected, the reports said. The cause of the clashes was not immediately known.
