Britain
UK reviewing 122 cases of missing/murdered 'Asian' women
Honour crimes in London are on the increase, with police recording four a week since last summer. They believe an honour killing is being committed every two months in the capital, a CPS London conference heard. Across the country police are reviewing the disappearances and deaths of 122 young Asian women - 81 from London - over the past 10 years to establish whether they were killed for bringing shame on their families.

The CPS and police will also ask coroners throughout the country for details of cases where they suspect that Asian women committed suicide following intimidation or harassment. Metropolitan Police Commander Andy Baker, Head of Homicide Investigation, told the Honour Crimes Conference that the suicide rate among Asian women aged between 15 and 25 was three times the national average. For the 25 to 35 age group it was twice the average.

Delegates heard that most honour crimes in the UK involve South Asian families but cases have also featured Middle Eastern, West African, Turkish, Bosnian, Kosovan and Roma families.
In a keynote address, CPS London's Chief Crown Prosecutor Dru Sharpling said honour crimes were "disgraceful" and went beyond an issue of culture. She told the conference held in London in December: "If it is nothing but culture it gives the crime a legitimacy that it does not deserve or merit. "This is primarily a crime against women. Honour crimes are crimes of violence which contain wholesale human rights abuses." The criminal justice system counted as nothing unless it protected the people it served, she stressed. "Honour crimes are corrosive and the victim deserves protection, and the criminal law must be designed to do just that. "And if they are not protected; if they are kept away from the agencies that can help; if the issue is submerged in our society, then that seems to me to give a green light to the perpetrators." In a democratic society the existence of any group of individuals whom the law could not apparently touch was unacceptable, she added.
Delegates learned that each year, a specialist unit at the Foreign Office handles around 250 cases of British women forced into marriage, rescuing between 60 and 70.
Speakers at the conference included a woman who as a teenage schoolgirl ran away from home to escape an arranged marriage. Jasvinder Sanghera was 14 when her family showed her a photograph of a Sikh man they said she would marry. Abused emotionally and physically, she fled to Newcastle two weeks before the wedding. As a result her parents refused to speak to her, saying she was dead in their eyes. Seven years later her elder sister Robina committed suicide by setting herself alight after being trapped in an arranged marriage. Jasvinder, who said she still receives threats from relatives for bringing shame on them, now runs a refuge for Asian women in Derby, handling 40 calls a week.

Delegates learned that each year, a specialist unit at the Foreign Office handles around 250 cases of British women forced into marriage, rescuing between 60 and 70.

#1  Asian women ? You mean Filipinos ? Japanese ? Vietnamese ? Chinese ?

You mean the Pak animals ? What a hellish mess you have there with these idiots operating their own "justice" operations inside your country completely separate from the established legal system of Britain. You should be quite proud. Not !

#3  In spite of Islam's vicious misogyny, veiled cult hags are some of the most vocal supporters of their own oppression. I have even heard genitally mutilated hags, defend the practice.

Or more likely, once Shari'a law becomes a reality in the U.K., shoot the Christian.

#5  The CPS and police will also ask coroners throughout the country for details of cases where they suspect that Asian women committed suicide following intimidation or harassment.

Why is the story being muddled with issues of suicide? An honor killing is not a suicide.

You can't have a quasi-legal system within an established legal system. Make Sharia law illegal in Britain.

#6  Criminey - two comments.

First - it's simply debasing the language to have "honour" and "killing" appear in the same sentence. Orwell wrote essays on such tactics, and this is another surviving example screaming for editing - let's start with, oh, how about "murder" as a useful term.

Second - while we should consider Orwell, let's remember that omission is often as important as commission when it comes to abusing the language. R'burgers are long familiar with spotting the missing word in this article (and worse yet, it's not an article, it's a press release from the prosecutor's office - not even doublespeak twistedited by the usually malignant press). Hint - the missing word is not "Sikh", which is found toward the end as sort of a deceptive lure off to the side of the main bait.

#7  The suicides are being investigated because the young women are killing themselves before (or just after) they are forced to marry their first cousins from The Olde Countrie. Pakistani tribal lands are being established in Leeds and Dewsbury.

Caribbean-Latin America
Now from China: Poisoned Toothpaste
Posted by: Grunter || 05/19/2007 12:20 || Comments || Link || [5 views] Top|| File under:

#1  At least your corpse with have a minty fresh breath!

Diethylene glycol, a poisonous ingredient in some antifreeze, has been found in 6,000 tubes of toothpaste in Panama, and customs officials there said yesterday that the product appeared to have originated in China.

Color me surprised! Who'd a thunk it?!?

“Our preliminary information is that it came from China, but we don’t know that with certainty yet,” said Daniel Delgado Diamante, Panama’s director of customs. “We are still checking all the possible imports to see if there could be other shipments.”

Let's check the roster of other countries with a solid track record of routinely exporting poisoned goods. Well whaddaya know, there's only one country on the list!

Diethylene glycol is the same poison that the Panamanian government inadvertently mixed into cold medicine last year, killing at least 100 people.

Those are people, not pets, mind you.

Records show that in that episode the poison, falsely labeled as glycerin, a harmless syrup, also originated in China.

You say gluten, I say glycerine, let's call the whole thing off!

Mr. Martínez said at a recent news conference that the toothpaste lacked the required health certificates and had entered the market mixed in with products intended for animal consumption.

Anyone sensing a pattern here?

Two weeks ago, The New York Times reported that a Chinese factory not certified to make pharmaceutical ingredients had sold 46 barrels of syrup containing diethylene glycol that had been falsely labeled as 99.5 percent pure glycerin.

"Oops, my marking pen accidentally slipped and somehow managed to write '99.5% pure', instead of POISON!. I can't explain how that happened."

That syrup passed through several trading companies before ending up in Panama, where it was mixed into 260,000 bottles of cold medicine.
At least 100 people died as a direct result, according to Dimas Guevara, a Panamanian prosecutor who is leading the investigation into the deaths.

I wonder if this will affect negotiations for communist China to take over management of the canal? Naaaaah, we're talking Latin America. What's a hundred peasants here or there?

Get ready for the corker!

Over the years, counterfeiters have found it financially advantageous to substitute diethylene glycol, a sweet-tasting syrup, for its chemical cousin glycerin, which is usually much more expensive.

Financially "advantageous", like they're merely cooking the books instead of knowingly POISONING PEOPLE. What is this horseshit? This is a hyper-corrupt government-insdustrial combine that routinely adulterates all sorts of food products with whatever garners them another percentage point in profit no matter how many people die.

When is the global community going to take China to task for its complicity in this ongoing serial murder outside its borders? Major boycotts and crippling inspection requirements need to be instituted in order to halt this fatal greed.

In light of yesterday's revelation that Bush's two top China policy advisors have huge conflicts of interest regarding profit-taking in connection with China, anyone want to bet on how severely our administration is going to react to yet another lethal round of Chinese exports? From the linked article:
The Bush administration’s pro-China policies are the result of the growing power of two key players: Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson and White House Chief of Staff Josh Bolton. Both are staunchly pro-Beijing and have sought to prevent China’s repressive human rights practices and unfair trade policies from influencing U.S. policy, said administration officials opposed to their pro-China policies. They also have sought to make sure that U.S. national security officials are not permitted to influence China policy with growing concerns about China’s military buildup and intelligence activities.

Both Paulson and Bolton are former Goldman Sachs executives. The financial company, which has made hundreds of millions of dollars in business in China, is believed to be involved in a national conflict of interest in that it is headquartered in the United States.
[emphasis added]
In light of the new immigration bill, I'd venture that it's not just the democrats that are selling us out to our enemies. This is an epidemic of elitism and contempt for the electorate not seen in many decades. Both sides of the aisle are selling us straight down the river.

#2  Zen - excellent point - until they can assure the produts from China are safe - we should boycott. I, for one, have boycotted Chinese trucks for the last 5 years

#3  Thank you, Frank. If China's privatization process had not been a fire-sale to PLA cronies of what few lucrative corporate assets there were, then I might view this as more of a law and code enfocement issue. Instead, the politburo merely handed the reins over to its pet oligarchs in exchange for little or no interruption of the traditional graft, bribery and extortion associated with doing business in communist China.

Despite any lip service paid by the Mandarins for entry into the WTO, this still renders China directly responsible for the ongoing mayhem and murder that result from their poorly regulated industries. Life may be cheap in China, and you can be sure it is, but that is absolutely no reason for us to permit exportation of such a benighted view to our own more civilized societies.

In many ways this mirrors the current immigration debacle. Our own government finds it easier to do business with newly arrived participants from far more corrupt cultures than honestly answering up to the demands of its proper and far more deserving electorate. Such insulting preferential treatment for non-citizens is simply outrageous and nulls the moral authority of all who participate in this abortion of elected representation. Be it China or Mexico, both are regimes that continue to export their worst elements, be they tainted goods or criminals, in order that we must deal with them at our loss and their profit. ENOUGH ALREADY!

Fifth Column
Another Fake Vietnam Vet Busted
The dedication of Oxford County's new Vietnam Veterans Memorial has been postponed because of an apparent lie. A big ceremony planned for Saturday was nixed after word got out that man behind the memorial lied about serving in Vietnam.

Earl "Scott" May represented himself to civic groups and others as a Vietnam vet who'd fought in the bloody battle of Hamburger Hill. But it turns out he was only eight years old at the time.

Organizers decided to postpone Saturday's event after the news got out. The memorial now sits covered by a tarp in downtown Rumford. "I think it was a good idea to postpone it. Looking at the law enforcement side of it, I think it was, because when you're dealing with such masses of people, a large group of people would have been here and we're not sure how people would react in situations like that," said Oxford County Sheriff Wayne Gallant.

People in Rumford have mixed feelings about the controversy. "I seen the man around collecting money for it, and I've gotta give him credit for that, whatever else he's done... that's between him and the Vietnam vets," said Korean War Veteran Mike Harris.

May says he did serve in the 101st Airborne Division, which saw action at Hamburger Hill. But he now says he served from 1979 to 1986.

The dedication ceremony is now scheduled to take place on Memorial Day.

Great White North
1 dead in Canadian Snowbird jet crash
GREAT FALLS, Mont. (AP) - A Canadian Forces Snowbird jet crashed Friday afternoon during rehearsal for weekend performances at Malmstrom Air Force Base, killing one person on board, the Federal Aviation Administration said. During the maneuvers above the base, one plane broke from the formation and crashed, FAA spokesman Allen Kenitzer said. No one ejected from the single-engine jet, he said.

The Snowbirds perform high-speed, low-altitude maneuvers in nine Canadair CT-114 Tutors and are part of the Canadian Air Force. The team was to perform Saturday and Sunday at Malmstrom's open house and sport autorama. An event organizer said Malmstrom's open house would continue, but was uncertain if the Snowbirds would perform.
Condolences to the family and to the team.

Science & Technology
Now bacteria can store information
Japanese researchers have discovered how to store information in bacteria. Scientists at Keio University successfully inserted Albert Einstein's famous "E > MC²" equation into the genetic code of a bacterium. They said the work could potentially allow information to be stored for "hundreds of millions of years".
