Sorry, Yet Another COVID-19 Study on Masks, this one in support of...
(Reuters) - Requiring the wearing of masks to prevent the spread of the novel coronavirus in areas at the epicenter of the global pandemic may have prevented tens of thousands of infections, a new study suggests.

Mask-wearing is even more important for preventing the virus’ spread and the sometimes deadly COVID-19 illness it causes than social distancing and stay-at-home orders, researchers said, in the study published in PNAS: The Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the USA.

Infection trends shifted dramatically when mask-wearing rules were implemented on April 6 in northern Italy and April 17 in New York City - at the time among the hardest hit areas of the world by the health crisis - the study found.

"This protective measure alone significantly reduced the number of infections, that is, by over 78,000 in Italy from April 6 to May 9 and over 66,000 in New York City from April 17 to May 9," researchers calculated.

When mask-wearing went into effect in New York, the daily new infection rate fell by about 3% per day, researchers said. In the rest of the country, daily new infections continued to increase.

Direct contact precautions - social distancing, quarantine and isolation, and hand sanitizing - were all in place before mask-wearing rules went into effect in Italy and New York City. But they only help minimize virus transmission by direct contact, while face covering helps prevent airborne transmission, the researchers say.

Discourse Needs Different Perspectives
Alyssa Johnson's photo
[VictoryGirlsBlog] Just logging on to your Facebook page or walking into your workplace can pose to provide a hotbed into a debate. As the discourse moves from discussing the kids and the weather, it all can quickly careen in to a political minefield.

In fact, some individuals are quick to label a debate in civil discourse as "hate speech". You don’t believe all of the tenets of the Black Lives Matter movement? Hate speech. You support law enforcement? Hate speech. You don’t believe you’re privileged? Hate speech. See what I am getting at here?

The "discourse police" who feel you are engaging of said "hate speech" will stop at nothing to ruin your very existence on this earth. Take LSU professor, Alyssa Johnson.

Fifth Column
Trump and Barr Fooled Them All
[EpochTimes] President Donald Trump
...The man who was so stupid he beat fourteen professional politicians, a former tech CEO, and a brain surgeon for the Republican nomination in 2016, then beat The Smartest Woman in the World in the general election...
faced a seemingly insurmountable problem. Again.

After having gone through a fake impeachment, the CCP Virus pandemic—which was coupled with a never-before-attempted economic shutdown—the Trump administration was suddenly faced with an escalating series of simultaneous riots in cities across the nation.

Peaceful protests across the country about the death of a black man named George Floyd in police custody in Minneapolis quickly turned into a series of violent nationwide riots.

It turned out much of this rioting seen across America was orchestrated by anarchist groups loosely referred to by the name "Antifa
...the armed wing of the Democratic Party...
President Trump and Attorney General William Barr on May 31 announced that Antifa had been designated as a terror group and that all federal law enforcement agencies were now coordinating their efforts through the 56 FBI Joint Terrorism Task Forces to "identify criminal organizers and instigators."

While the Democrats and the media anticipated getting the optics they so desperately craved of Trump sending in soldiers with bayonets fixed charging at the "peaceful protesters," what they got instead was the sudden appearance of a bunch of federal tactical units from the FBI, the Secret Service, the DEA, ATF, the U.S. Marshals Service, the Bureau of Prisons, and other agencies, in full gear, many with no rifles, and certainly no bayonets.

As the entire nation is about to belatedly discover, federal agents do not need the permission of governors or mayors before they can enter a state or a city to enforce federal laws and arrest those who are breaking them.
In a variety of quiet corners gleeful chortling is being heard as rough men and women do the things they do so well to miscreants who thoroughly deserve what’s coming to them.
And it happens to be a federal crime to conduct terror attacks against American communities.

It seems the play among some Democrat governors and mayors was to refuse to call in the National Guard while also making their police departments stand down and give the rioters "space to destroy," which would cause the situation to become so bad that Trump would be forced to act.

And the act they anticipated the President to take was to seize control from the governors and send in the active-duty military to restore order. This would have then allowed them to play their "Trump the Dictator" narrative all the way to the election."

But Trump didn’t do what they expected.

If I could clearly see what the progressive Left was attempting to bait Trump into doing from down here in South Texas, then of course the president could see this for himself.

So Trump didn’t send the active-duty military in and the Left isn’t going to get their desired optics of regular military units chasing down rioters in the streets.

Just as he did with his CCP virus response, Trump avoided the trap set for him while cutting the Gordian Knot he was being presented with.

Recall Democrats and the media spent months trying to browbeat this chief executive into seizing control from the Democratic governors and handling the virus response on a federal level. When they weren’t trying to bait him into doing that, they were trying to bait him into nationalizing various key industries. And Trump refused to do that either.

Instead of doing what they eagerly hoped he would do, Trump’s enemies complained impotently as he forged an unprecedented alliance between federal agencies and private industry, the likes of which had not been seen since World War II.

While "experts" stroked their chins for TV cameras and opined it would take months, if not years, to solve the four biggest needs—ventilators, virus testing, production of personal protective equipment, and a vaccine—Trump and his handpicked team tackled these problems with innovative creativity. They cut massive amounts of red tape and got results in a matter of days and weeks—not the predicted months and years.

Because Trump had successfully navigated the huge black swan event of a CCP virus pandemic, and as the new jobs report for May demonstrated, he’s also successfully navigated the economic shutdown, Democrats immediately moved to trying to turn nationwide rioting to their own political advantage.

But Trump is simply too smart for these people. He sent in the feds, who spent the past week quietly taking down Antifa behind the scenes. And now it’s mostly over.

Once again, they lose, he wins.

Devolution to Revolution: An Already Demoralized U.S. is Now Being Destabilized
[American Thinker] The two destabilizing events recently occurring back-to-back, the response to the Wuhan coronavirus pandemic, and the George Floyd rioting, illustrate well how America is now institutionally incapable of making decisions in her own best interests. That is, the overreaction to the disease and under-reaction to the rioting reflect a country long demoralized.

Moreover, if that’s not troubling enough, know that this is a state of being that usually leads to tyranny.

We’d had pandemics before — ones causing more death, especially when adjusted for population — but we’d never before embraced lockdowns, a cure worse than the disease.

But at least the disease was a relative unknown; riots are not. People the world over know how to deal with riots, and this isn’t by letting them metastasize so thugs can run wild, hurt the innocent and destroy the nation. Yet our "leaders" fiddled while the country burned, motivated by moral confusion and weakness, and some, most certainly, by ulterior motives.

You may recognize "demoralization" and "destabilization" as the first two steps in the process of communist subversion, explained well by late Soviet defector Yuri Bezmenov, a KGB agent who fled to Canada in 1970. Bezmenov stated in the mid-1980s already that the process of demoralization — an undermining of a target nation’s morals that makes it ripe for revolutionary takeover — was "basically completed already" in the United States. But a money line is what he said about demoralized people:

"[D]espite...the abundance of information, no one is able to come to sensible conclusions in the interests of defending themselves, their families, their community and their country. It’s a great brainwashing process...."

Sound familiar, maybe a bit like people who can’t figure out how to handle rioters and why it’s necessary? How about people who think eliminating ICE, borders and the police are positive measures (I refer to the actually sincere individuals)?

Bezmenov also said that demoralized people "are programmed to think and react to certain stimuli in a certain pattern; you cannot change their mind." Sound familiar, perhaps like people who react to truthful statements by reflexively shouting "racist!" or "white supremacy!"?

One more familiar sentiment: Bezmenov also stated, "A person who is demoralized is unable to assess true information — the facts tell nothing to him." Just think here about how many today will react to air-tight, fact-based, logical arguments, not with assent or even open-minded pondering, but with angry rejection.

Note here that numbness to Truth is nothing new. British satirist Jonathan Swift observed hundreds of years ago already (I’m paraphrasing) that you "cannot reason a man out of a position he has not reasoned himself into." The difference is that the process of demoralization in question yields large numbers of people egregiously detached from reality in a way that serves a specific agenda, and who are virtually impossible to change.

Our thoroughly demoralized state can best be understood by grasping how our society actually demonizes the elements of morality — virtues — while elevating vices. Chastity is called prudishness while sexual depravity is normalized and lust is branded "lifestyle choices." Emphasizing diligence and its fruits (e.g., punctuality, hard work) is called "white supremacy" while sloth is rewarded with handouts. Prudence (wisdom) is branded bigotry while foolishness is called "wokeness." Faith is deemed fantasy while secular cynicism is thought sophistication. Actions reflecting courage are called cruelty and cowardice is called compassion. Humility is considered weakness while pride is labeled "high self-esteem." Patience is devalued while acting on wrath is called activism. Kindness is lacking while envy is euphemized as a desire for "social justice" and "equality." This is a time of moral inversion.

#3  Bezmenov said all this in 1984 but a few years later it was the Soviet Union that collapsed. I take some comfort for that and thank God for Ronald Reagan. But communism is still alive and well and now we have China vs Donald Trump. The mainstream media and academia are every bit as shrill and loony now as they were then if not more so. The threat is real.

Protesters Pull Down Joe Biden After Mistaking Him For Old Racist Statue
[Babylon Bee] Enraged protesters were marching through D.C. toppling racist statues when they came upon one standing on a street corner. The archaic, racist statue looked very, very old. It even had some kind of obsolete soundbite-playing device in it, probably an early phonograph from how old the statue looked. It kept saying things about black people being clean and articulate and how poor kids are just as bright as white kids.

The rioters threw a lasso around the top of the statue after googling "How to tie a lasso" and arguing for a while about how lassos are racist. They then brought it tumbling down after graffitiing all over it.

Unfortunately, the old, racist statue turned out to be former vice president and current presidential candidate Joe Biden.

"Classic pranksters," Biden said, chuckling, as he dusted himself off. "You know, this happens from time to time. Back in my day, we were out at the community pool, hanging out and throwing rocks at each other, as was the fashion at the time. CornPop and I were dishing it out and running our fingers through our leg hairs when..." As he continued to drone on, though, another racist group came up and toppled him the other way.

Eventually the rioters had had their fun and moved on, knocking over Nancy Pelosi and Ruth Bader Ginsburg, mistaking both of them for ancient statues.

A Brief History of Antifa
[Gatestone Institute] U.S. Attorney General William Barr has blamed Antifa — a militant "anti-fascist" movement — for the violence that has erupted at George Floyd protests across the United States. "The violence instigated and carried out by Antifa and other similar groups in connection with the rioting is domestic terrorism and will be treated accordingly," he said.

Barr also said that the federal government has evidence that Antifa "hijacked" legitimate protests around the country to "engage in lawlessness, violent rioting, arson, looting of businesses, and public property assaults on law enforcement officers and innocent people, and even the murder of a federal agent." Earlier, U.S. President Donald J. Trump had instructed the U.S. Justice Department to designate Antifa as a terrorist organization.

Academics and media outlets sympathetic to Antifa have argued that the group cannot be classified as a terrorist organization because, they claim, it is a vaguely-defined protest movement that lacks a centralized structure. Mark Bray, a vocal apologist for Antifa in America and author of the book "Antifa: The Anti-Fascist Handbook," asserts that Antifa "is not an overarching organization with a chain of command."

Empirical and anecdotal evidence shows that Antifa is, in fact, highly networked, well-funded and has a global presence. It has a flat organizational structure with dozens and possibly hundreds of local groups. Not surprisingly, the U.S. Department of Justice is currently investigating individuals linked to Antifa as a step to unmasking the broader organization.

In the United States, Antifa's ideology, tactics and goals, far from being novel, are borrowed almost entirely from Antifa groups in Europe, where so-called anti-fascist groups, in one form or another, have been active, almost without interruption, for a century.

Home Front: Culture Wars
Spengler: The Economics of Civil Unrest
The George Floyd riots — or rather, the anarchist riots that took Floyd’s death as a pretext — give Americans two good reasons to re-elect Donald Trump in November.

The first is that the Democratic Party has surrendered to the politics of resentment so abjectly that its governers and mayors are incapable of protecting life and property. President Trump is magnificently right to invoke the 1807 Insurrection Act and keep the military in readiness to restore order where state and local government have abandoned their responsibilities.

...The second is that President Trump understands that the social fabric of the nation depends on rebuilding American manufacturing. We’ve drifted into a services-and-consumption economy rather than an investment-driven, productive economy over the past thirty years, thanks to both the Establishment Republicans and the Democrats. ... Trump is the only politician of national standing who knows that there is a problem in the first place.

...Economics doesn’t explain everything. Heartbreakingly high rates of incarceration, illegitimacy, disease and poverty among black Americans are tinder waiting for a spark like the death of Minneapolis resident George Floyd in police custody. "What the great French sociologist Emil Durkheim called "anomic suicide" is the Great Plague of our times. Self-destructive behavior in the form of opioid addiction, alcoholism, and violent behavior is destroying the lives of large parts of the US population," I wrote in this space March 30.

Nonetheless, economics does tell us something, and the chart below gives context to the riots which have wracked American cities during the past several days.
""

...Minority workers in the United States benefited from an employment boom during the Trump Administration, and the black unemployment fell to just 5.8%, the lowest level in American history, thanks in large measure to the availability of low-skilled service industry jobs. These jobs disappeared the fastest and are least likely to come back in the foreseeable future, as Americans save more of their income and avoid crowded public places like restaurants.

Black Americans suffered disproportionately in the epidemic, with death rates much higher than whites, Asians or Hispanics. That may be due to the prevalence of co-morbid medical conditions among blacks, for example, hypertension. Forty percent of adult blacks suffer from high blood pressure, vs. 28% of whites and non-black Hispanics and 25% of Asians. According to one study, American blacks died from COVID-19 at triple the rate of other races. Whether this is due to poor diet, inadequate preventive care or other factors is outside my area of competence. But it is clear that blacks suffered more.

With the COVID-19 epidemic, the economic prospects of black Americans suddenly turned bleak. As the American economy shifted out of industry and into services, personal consumption took up a larger share of Gross Domestic Product. 70% of US GDP goes to personal consumption vs. an industrial-nation average of 60%.

...Dependence on personal consumption and low levels of savings and investment hollowed out the American economy and made it more vulnerable to shocks like the COVID-19 epidemic. And minority workers, the last hired in the 2009-2019 recovery, were the first fired, and the least likely to be rehired.

Add to this the predicament of a generation of students who paid an average of $35,000 a year for tuition at private colleges (or $26,000 at state colleges for non-residents). They borrowed an aggregate $1.6 trillion to pay for tuition. Many of them graduated unprepared for remunerative work, and subsist on marginal employment, which disappeared during the epidemic.

This is no excuse for violent behavior, to be sure; it is one thing to air grievances in peaceful assembly and quite another to burn police cars, businesses, and even churches, as rioters did in Washington, D.C. and Louisville, KY. But the fragility of a hollowed-out US economy addicted to high consumption and low savings helps explain the violent coda to the COVID-19 epidemic.

Hiya, guys. So... a terrible time, this George Floyd thing. I am with the cops. Good... bad... I am with the cops.
I never quite understood why Americans expect communities that add their chosen tribal identities before the 'American', to be ever loyal to the American nation. Maybe Americans have stopped seeing it as a nation altogether, the borders so porous and the polity so divided on the subject. Maybe it's really like the liberals say, 'an amalgam of diverse settler societies, still developing.'

Obviously, the hereditary agenda of Africanized Americans has always remained to fashion whatever States they can get their hands on, into utopias they can relate to - the stuff of Mugabes and Idi Amins.

People who cannot pick a side between future Wakanda and their own national dignity because of a little vicarious guilt will find themselves unable to survive the coming onslaught of anti-American activism. A very bad time, it forces us to side with idiots like Chauvin. But I'm still with the cops.

Maybe entire PDs should resign and people should should just arm themselves, set up community operated surveillance in neighbourhoods to capture the reality of Wakandans and Antifa, the things they hide behind their mask of victimhood. If it's anarchy they want, better a white, American anarchy than something from the minds of modern day Malcom Xs or Khalil Muhammeds.

Sorry, but when I see unemployable mobs of bastards turn a town into shit, I feel enraged for the hard working nine-to-fiver who abides by rules, keeps everyone pleased and yet suffers. Our duty is to him, not some mob of historic guilt peddling criminals.

#23  Thank you. I really missed you too. Couldn't even keep track.

So.. a pretty bad thing for our American brethren. When I saw the reports on youtube, I said, ' shit !' Felt like beating that idiot cop to death.

#25  M. Murcek -Sidney Poitier is from and grew up in the then British Colony of Bahamas. He later became American but his education and such was in the UK tradition of what it supplied to natives in colonies. Nuff Said..

#26  Dron66046: One rumor going about but quickly censored by FaceBook, Google and Twitter was that the cop who did that was hire by the scum where the victim last worked to expressly remove him from this plain... Who knows but not beyond possible?

#27  Well, he's no hit man if he took 8+ minutes of an iffy technique in broad daylight to do the job.

#28  And I stick by my analysis that Poitier made his bones in cinema as a black man having angry issues about integrating in white society. Where he went to school really has nothing to do with it.

#29  What M said. He should have stuck to policing Demtown, and activity that does not require any real finesse.

In Zimbabwe, people with albinism struggle against prejudice
HARARE, Zimbabwe (AP) — Each time Yvonne Gumbo, who has albinism, and her friends get together for a picture, she insists on being in the center.

"I tell them I make the picture beautiful because I am special," she told The Associated Press at her home in Zimbabwe’s capital, Harare, recently.

"I have two different colors while they have one. I am black. I am white," she said, smiling. "Who else can make the picture more beautiful?"

It’s the 22-year old’s way of fighting back against the deeply rooted myths and prejudices faced by people with albinism in Zimbabwe, where they are often ostracized, laughed at and pejoratively referred to as "white people" among other names.

While much of the world is engrossed in the race-related outrage over the death of George Floyd in the United States, Zimbabwe’s young people with albinism are fighting prejudices against the color of their skin.

In nearby Malawi and Tanzania, many people with albinism are killed because their body parts are thought to bring good luck. No such killings have been reported in Zimbabwe, which has about 70,000 people with albinism out of a population of about 15 million.

But prejudices remain deep-rooted.

#1  Good ole AP, refusing to discuss (or even mention) the inconvenient truth of tribal Muti and 'real' discrimination. Of course everyone knows it's white policemen who are doing all the killing of blacks:

Dated IOL Muti story and link: One in five people in South Africa's rural areas has had first-hand experience of a human body part being trafficked after a muti killing.

And, of the body parts mentioned in their accounts, male genitals, breasts, hearts, fingers and tongues are the most commonly listed, according to research undertaken by the Human Rights League in Mozambique and supported by Childline in South Africa.

The study's findings are all the more shocking after the recent discovery of 10-year-old Masego Kgomo's mutilated body in dense bush in Soshanguve, Tshwane.

One of the five men arrested for her murder is a sangoma who allegedly uses body parts for muti. A 14-year-old boy was also arrested.

But Masego's case is one of many. Of the more than 413 individuals who attended workshops for the research report, 22 percent of those who were willing to be interviewed had seen a mutilated body with parts missing or a body part separated from a body.

There were 72 accounts relating to the trafficking of body parts mentioned in the report. Of these, 27 were from South Africa.

#3  Not a great deal we can actually say in the west, without of course endangering Planned Parenthood parts and potions sales.

Yet another...inconvenient truth.
