Ezra Klein Weighs In On The Paris Attacks In The Ezra Kleiniest Way Possible

#2  I don't understand how seeing these murders can leave someone less sympathetic to refugees fleeing these murderers: Perhaps the fact that they came as economic refugees suggests they weren't fleeing... Perhaps the fact that they were all military aged men suggests they were not actually refugees. Ezra Klein is an idiot.

Europe
Paris Attacks: Will the West Continue on the Road to Suicide?
[PJ Media] If there was any doubt that the world is now in crisis, the mass casualty attack on Paris a few hours ago should lay the question to rest. In response to the assault, France closed its borders, declared a state of emergency and declared a curfew, a trifecta of measures unseen since World War 2. The wave of attacks is temporarily over. The period of damage assessment, which includes totaling up the doleful toll of casualties, and political posturing now begins.

This is the first time France has declared a state of emergency since the Algerian war, which took place between 1954 and 1962. It is also the first time a curfew has been imposed since the dark days of world war two in 1944.

It's significant that the attacks occurred during a period of heightened alert associated with big soccer matches. French president Hollande himself was watching a game when he had to be unceremoniously shuttled to the safety of a government building. That suggests that French security forces and intelligence were genuinely surprised by the attack and therefore there exist terror networks they don't know about capable of large-scale operations. Scotland Yard and MI5 must realize this and will inevitably be burning the midnight oil tonight.

Hanin Ghaddar notes that only a few days ago ISIS launched a mass casualty attack on the Hezbollah stronghold of the Dahiyeh in Beirut to prove that there are no more safe spaces. "ISIS has demonstrated to the Shiites and the rest of Lebanon that Hezbollah cannot protect them, and that its 'tight' security plan in the southern suburbs of Beirut is a fantasy." Beirut came to the 10th arrondissement today. It will come to other Western cities soon.

The scale of the Paris attacks sends the same message to the Western public that ISIS telegraphed to the Hezbollah: French police alone cannot protect them. Not that the cops aren't trying. Recently the Turks nabbed a French jihadist as he was having hair plugs implanted to disguise his appearance, the better to pass unnoticed. "Last week, police swooped on 20 IS suspects in the Mediterranean resort of Antalya, days ahead of a summit of world leaders from the Group of 20 nations, including US President Barack Obama and Russian strongman Vladimir Putin." But that's not nearly enough.

In any event, the bloodbath is likely to increase pressure on the EU to reinstate border controls. Already, Austria is erecting a fence on its frontier with Slovenia to slow down the migrant tide. Sweden has set up border checks for the first time in 20 years.

The dream of a "borderless Europe" has taken a body blow. Now all courses run ill. The momentum of the migrant tide is already too great to simultaneously pacify public opinion and avert a human tragedy. A million people are on the road, strung out all over the place. Reuters reports that migrants are now making their way through the Arctic route, coming in through Norway via Russia clad in pitifully thin coats. "Ali left Syria to avoid the army draft and paid $2,500 all-inclusive for the trip to the border, which included flying to the Russian Arctic port of Murmansk via Moscow and Beirut. Like others reaching Norway, he cycled the final stretch, as Russian authorities do not allow travelers to proceed on foot."

Ali may not be as welcome any more. You can't let them freeze and Paris can't let them in. Like Syria itself, there are no easy choices left to the Europeans. EU efforts to bribe African countries into repatriating their citizens were met by a blank refusal.

The European Union has been forced to drop controversial plans to deport failed asylum seekers who do not have passports after African countries blocked the move.

European leaders offered more than ÂŁ1billion aid in a bid to persuade their African counterparts to take back tens of thousands of illegal migrants.

But a migration summit in Valletta, Malta, descended into farce after the Africans rejected the EU plan to expel those who do not qualify for asylum using special papers.

The dilemma the West now faces is that it cannot survive on the basis of the platform which its elites have carefully constructed since WW2. They are being beaten to death with their own lofty statements. They must either continue to uphold the vision of open borders, multiculturalism, declining birthrates, unilateral disarmament and a growing state sector at all costs -- in other words continue on the road to suicide -- or retreat. As recent events at American campuses have shown, when faced with the choice of saving the Left and saving the actual world, the odds are that "the world" goes over the side first.

The Barbarians Are Inside, And There Are No Gates
h/t Instapundit
As I write, Paris is under curfew for the first time since the German occupation, and the death toll from the multiple attacks stands at 158, the vast majority of them slaughtered during a concert at the Bataclan theatre, a delightful bit of 19th century Chinoiserie on the boulevard Voltaire. The last time I was there, if memory serves, was to see Julie Pietri. I'm so bloody sick of these savages shooting and bombing and killing and blowing up everything I like - whether it's the town where my little girl's favorite fondue restaurant is or my favorite hotel in Amman or the brave freespeecher who hosted me in Copenhagen ...or a music hall where I liked to go to hear a little jazz and pop and get away from the cares of the world for a couple of hours. But look at the photographs from Paris: there's nowhere to get away from it; the barbarians who yell "Allahu Akbar!" are there waiting for you ...when you go to a soccer match, you go to a concert, you go for a drink on a Friday night. They're there on the train... at the magazine office... in the Kosher supermarket... at the museum in Brussels... outside the barracks in Woolwich...

Twenty-four hours ago, I said on the radio apropos the latest campus "safe space" nonsense:

This is what we're going to be talking about when the mullahs nuke us.

#1  From Mike Smith's blog:

Classical “Problem, Reaction, Solution”.

If you want a new “War on terror”...a New Crusade, this is how you do it:

You drop a few bombs on Islamists and open the borders of Europe for “refugees” knowing full well that amongst these “refugees” are battle hardened ISIS terrorists smuggling weapons in freezer trucks.

Then you sit back and wait for crime to rise and terrorists to do their thing. (the problem). The people cry out, “Something must be done!” (the reaction).

So you offer the solution...A new modern day crusade from the Atlantic to Teheran , driving all Muslims out of Europe...Check the worry in my eye. It’s long overdue.

#2  I hope that because it didn't happen here or because of the expanse of water between us and Europe that it can't happen here. Our Mexican border is a sieve; the Canada border not much better. We have unrestricted illegal and legal immigration due to Soros and the left's notions of "open borders and a OWG." We have a few "enclaves" here as they do in Paris. The FBI says there are over 1000 investigations into "probes" and Islamic terrorist's activities here. So yeah, it could happen here. Hold your friends close, your enemies even closer, and your firearms even closer.

'Hemingway' has a life-time ban here at the Burg. His comments are either deleted or get the spam-cop treatment. Anyone else who tosses off stuff like he does will face the same. We don't advocate or condone genocide. We'll handle our enemies but doing so will not entail extermination.

I'm not so big on extermination myself. I advocate disengagement. Kick them out of our country and stay the hell out of theirs. Check back in a thousand years to see if they've become a little more reasonable. If they wanna sell their oil, fine. If they don't we'll produce our own and let them eat sand. If they hit us, hit them back harder...as hard as it takes. No more attempts at nation building because they have proven themselves unworthy.

#6  Paris suicide bomber arrived as Syrian “refugee”
DEBKAfile November 14, 2015, 7:14 PM (IDT)
A Greek minister confirmed Saturday night that one of the suicide bombers identified by his Syrian passport had passed through the island of Leros on Oct. 3 as a refugee before reaching France. He blew himself up outside the Stade de France during a French-German soccer match in one of the multiple terror attacks that struck Paris Friday. DEBKAfile: This discovery offered proof of the Islamic State’s exploitation of the Syrian refugee exodus to infiltrate terrorists in the West. French President Francois Hollande and German Chancellor Angela Merkal reject this contention and insist on accepting the Syrian refugees on humanitarian grounds, giving sleepless nights to their security services who have no way of tracking the refugees’ real origins.

#7  Kick the muslims out?
Islam's "civilization", like the Romans and Greeks was based on slavery, hundreds of slaves toiled to death to support an useless parasites...Once the US Navy destroyed the Bey of Algiers and his slave collectors, the barbary pirates, all the muslim countries collapsed and muslims starved to death...It got so bad that the abandoned orphans of big cities were called "STREET ARABS"

We are already seeing results in Syria-Iraq...

Coulter after Paris attacks: 'Trump was elected president tonight'
[The Hill] Ann Coulter took to Twitter on Friday night to respond to the Paris terror attacks, saying that "Donald Trump was elected president tonight."

The conservative commentator tweeted a series of reactions to the attacks that left more than 120 dead, calling for "no more Muslim immigration." She also targeted recent U.S. college student protests, as well as American gun and immigration laws and proposals.

Coulter ended her string of Tweets with: "They can wait if they like until next November for the actual balloting, but Donald Trump was elected president tonight."

Naval Academy Professor Sues Navy Over Free Speech
[Mil.com]ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- A civilian professor at the U.S. Naval Academy is suing the Navy, accusing it of violating his First Amendment right to free speech and chilling academic freedom.

Attorneys for Bruce Fleming said Thursday that the professor was denied merit pay and $7,000 in summer funding based on a 2014 reprimand. It stemmed from a 2013 classroom discussion, when Fleming prompted his students to consider the academy's sexual assault program and the potentially one-sided burdens it put on men, at a time when the academy was part of the national debate over how to stop sexual assault in the military.
But professor, a "one-sided burden on men" is the desired government and progressive outcome.
"Professor Fleming's speech touched on matters of significant public concern, and not only private concern," the lawsuit filed in U.S. District Court in Baltimore said. "His statements were made for legitimate pedagogical purposes, and fall within the core of the First Amendment's protection of academic freedom."
So he was fined $7000. for his beliefs ?
Cmdr. John Schofield, a spokesman for the academy, declined to comment on an ongoing legal matter.

Two female students disagreed with Fleming's comments in class. After Fleming sent emails to them and other students about what was said, the two students complained to sexual assault prevention officials.

Fleming was cleared in an initial investigation. A second investigation by a more senior academy official led to the reprimand. It found the professor's initiation of conduct cases against the two students amounted to retaliation.

"Academic freedom does not afford a faculty member the right to use the classroom as a bully pulpit for his or her own social, cultural, and political views unconnected to the course material," wrote Col. Paul Montanus.
That's a correct statement and exactly the complaint many of us have against the progressive academy on campus. We do have to live up to our own standards.
He was director of the academy's division of humanities and social sciences at the time of the second investigation.

The lawsuit disputes a finding by the academy that characterized the actions of the female midshipmen in complaining to sexual assault prevention officials as seeking guidance. Instead, the lawsuit alleges complaints lodged with the sexual assault prevention office "were made in bad faith and with the specific intent to have the academy censor and punish Professor Fleming for daring to criticize the (Sexual Assault Prevention and Response Program.)"

Fleming has been an English professor at the academy for more than 29 years. He is known for being an outspoken critic of academy policies. For example, he has criticized the academy's admissions policy relating to athletes and minorities.
He can't really believe special treatment is extended athletes and minorities can he ?

The Care and Feeding of Weaponized Outrage
[Town Hall] Watching the zoo unleashed on the University of Missouri campus, reminds one of the opening line of that oft-played song--"Feelings, nothing more than feelings..." We're watching the sickness of the sensitivity movement come to bloom on America's campuses in the form of unbridled intolerance. If your sensitivities are ruffled, if there's a hint of attack, or if I just don't like what you have to say, shut up or I'll have you removed, fired, or shamed into silence!

On far too many campuses, those "offended" now have a license to attack without consequence. Even worse--they're getting their way!

This is the PC culture unchained, and the schools and administrators who have cultivated it are reaping the rewards--chaotic demonstrations, personal attacks, and unending demands!

This growing grievance industry is being rewarded and the media is weaponizing their message. There are campaigns to stop bullying. We need a campaign to stop these narcissistic, spoiled bullies from controlling our college campuses. It's time for administrators and coaches to exercise leadership instead of giving in to the demonstrators' irresponsible demands.
