4 adults, 2 kids shot and wounded at Chicago baby shower
[DAWN] Authorities say two children were among the six people who were maimed when two men opened fire on a baby shower outside of a home on the South Side of reliably Democrat Chicago, aka The Windy City or Mobtown
... home of Al Capone, a succession of Daleys, Barak Obama, and Rahm Emmanuel,...
The attack happened Saturday evening in the West Englewood neighbourhood. The Chicago Tribune reports that about 20 children were playing outside when the button men opened fire, sending them running for cover.

An 8-year-old boy was shot in the chest and back, and a 10-year-old girl was shot in the shin. Police say both are in stable, pH balanced condition.

Three men ranging in age from 23 to 48 years old and a 29-year-old woman were also maimed. The woman is at death's door and the two younger men are in stable, pH balanced condition. The condition of the oldest man is unknown.

-Short Attention Span Theater-
Union Gun Boats Run the Batteries on the Confederate Mississippi
[Battlefields.org] On this Day 1861

The first important triumph of Union forces against Confederate river forts came at Fort Henry on the Tennessee River on February 6, 1862, when a squadron of armored warships under Flag Officer Andrew H. Foote out-dueled the rebel gunners ashore and compelled the fort’s surrender before army troops under Brig. Gen. Ulysses S. Grant arrived. Ten days later it was the army’s turn to win the laurels as Grant surrounded Fort Donelson on the Cumberland River and dictated terms of "unconditional surrender."

But at Island Number 10 on the Mississippi River, it was a different story. Here Foote’s gunboats could not take on the heavy shore batteries unassisted, and Maj. Gen. John Pope’s infantry was cut off from the enemy by the river itself. Unless these forces could find a way to work together, the Union advance down the Mississippi would be halted before it fairly began.

What made Island Number 10 so daunting an obstacle was its peculiar geography ‐ a dramatic S turn at the point where the Mississippi River flowed southward from Kentucky into Tennessee. In the first bend sat an island ‐ the 10th one counting southward from where the Ohio flowed into the Mississippi ‐ where the Confederates had erected a series of shore fortifications bolstered by a substantial floating battery.

Unlike at Fort Henry, Foote’s gunboats could not simply pull up alongside and slug it out with the enemy; nor could the army assail the rebel fortifications from the landward side, as Grant had at Fort Donelson, thanks to swampy marsh created where a tributary entered the river. A better line of attack was from the south, but that would be possible only if Pope’s men could cross the river and approach the fort from the rear ‐ a movement that would require the gunboats to pass the island and transport them. Neither Union force could subdue the enemy, or even approach him menacingly, without support and assistance from the other.

Recognizing the situation, Foote and Pope tried to see if they could cut a canal through the marshy swampland of the S curve to bypass Island Number 10 and link up with Pope’s soldiers at New Madrid, Mo., but the gambit proved fruitless. There was nothing for it but for some brave soul to try to run past the Island Number 10 batteries. The man who volunteered to try was Cdr. Henry Walke of USS Carondelet.

On the night of April 4, 1862, Walke attempted to slip past the enemy batteries, but a spark from his ship’s stack alerted the sentries and the Rebels opened fire. Despite facing a gauntlet of fire and the danger of navigating the winding river at night, Carondelet made it safely past the island. Two nights later, the USS Pittsburgh, under Lt. Egbert Thompson, made the same run, and, on April 7, the two ships transferred Pope’s soldiers across the Mississippi to assault the Rebel’s unprotected southern flank.

The geography of the Confederate position at Island Number 10, once its great strength, now proved to be a trap. With Pope cutting off their communications southward, and Foote’s gunboats holding the river above and below the island, the Confederate defenders could do little but accept the inevitable. Pope captured both the fort and its 6,000-man garrison, making him a hero in the North and winning him the command of a field army in Virginia.

#1  ...Pope did beautifully on the Mississippi, and certainly deserved his promotion to run the Army of Virginia. Unfortunately, things went to his head and he managed to pi$$ off most of his staff and senior commanders just in time to have Stonewall his own self hand him his head at Second Manassas.

Rhino poacher stamped to death by elephant, eaten by lion
More on this story from yesterday.
[NYDAILYNEWS] An elephant trampled a suspected rhino poacher to death and his remains were devoured by a lion, according to the South African National Parks.

The incident took place Tuesday at Kruger National Park and his remains were recovered two days later, officials said.

The dear departed’s family told authorities his accomplices told them the man had been killed.

The four accomplices expeditiously departed at a goodly pace but were later tossed in the calaboose
Book 'im, Mahmoud!
and are in jug.

After the family was informed, they called the park and head ranger Don English formed a search party.

"Entering Kruger National Park illegally and on foot is not wise, it holds many dangers and this incident is evidence of that," Glenn Phillips, Managing Executive of the KNP, said. "It is very sad to see the daughters of the diseased mourning the loss of their father, and worse still, only being able to recover very little of his remains."

"The total number of animals killed since 2005 threatens the biodiversity of the entire continent," according to the African Wildlife Foundation.

"Indeed, between January 2005 and January 2017, nearly 2,000 elephants and roughly 6,300 rhinos had been slaughtered at the hands of poachers in South Africa and Kenya alone," the organization said.

The organization added that rhino poaching incidents have skyrocketed in the last decade.

American Kim Sue Endicott, guide abducted in Uganda returned safely after ransom paid
[ABCNEWS.GO] An American woman and her safari guide who were kidnapped in a Ugandan wilderness park and held five days by armed captors were returned unharmed on Sunday after a ransom was paid for their release, authorities said.

Kim Sue Endicott of Southern Caliphornia, an impregnable bastion of the Democratic Party, and her tour guide, Congolese national Jean-Paul Mirenge Remezo, were freed in a negotiated handover, officials said.

The kidnappers who kidnapped them at gunpoint in Queen Elizabeth National Park had demanded a $500,000 ransom, but it was not immediately known how much was paid to secure their release or who paid it.

Endicott and Remezo were taken back to a lodge at the park, a front man for the Wild Frontiers Uganda safari operation told ABC News.

Britain
Jacob Rees-Mogg says Theresa May has made 'active choices' to stop Britain leaving the EU
[Standard] Tory Brexiteer Jacob Rees-Mogg has launched an attack on the Prime Minister, blaming Theresa May for the UK's failure to have left the EU already.

The chairman of the European Research Group told Sky's Sophy Ridge on Sunday: "The Prime Minister could have taken us out on March 29. It was the Prime Minister who asked for an extension, it was the Prime Minister who changed the date by prerogative power from March 29 to April 12.

"This all rests with her and upon her shoulders."

Mr Rees-Mogg added that Mrs May "has made active choices to stop us leaving and she deserves to be held to account for that".

North Korea warns of catastrophic consequences if F-35s are delivered to South Korea
[ALMASDARNEWS] North Korea has condemned its southern neighbour over its decision to deploy US-made fifth-generation F-35A fighter jets, Uriminzokkiri, an online portal transmitting news from North Korea’s Central News Agency, has reported.

Calling on Seoul to consider the potential “catastrophic consequences” of the fighters’ deployment in the region, the outlet stressed that “this unfriendly act exacerbates military tensions on the Korean Peninsula and is a direct challenge to efforts to achieve peace.”

South Korea received the first two of its F-35A fighter jets late last month, with eight more expected to be delivered by the end of the year, and a total of 40 on order. The rest of the $85 million apiece planes are expected to be delivered by 2021. Before delivery, South Korean pilots spent months training six F-35A aircraft at an airbase in Arizona.

North Korea’s Air Force consists mostly of Soviet-era aircraft, including licence-built MiG-21s and Su-25s, with MiG-23s and MiG-29, first introduced in the early 80s, serving as the country’s most modern fighter aircraft.

Earlier this year, hopes for progress in achieving peace on the peninsula faded as much anticipated talks between North Korean leader Kim Jong-un and President Donald Trump in Hanoi collapsed without a deal or even a final communique.

Last week, US Acting Pentagon chief Patrick Shanahan emphasized that the US would not be reducing the extent of its military exercises with South Korea, adding that it was on the contrary building up its capability.

#1  other than the MIG-29, the NKor Air Force is well past 'best used by' date and wouldn't last long against the SKor fighters

I suppose what they are really worried about it that the F-35 would wipe out their surface to air capability

That is the story the media is selling. In the movie I'm watching, that was Pudge taking the latest deal back to the generals for approval.

The F-35s are just a reminder that the clock is still ticking, opportunities will not last forever, and there is no way you can out-compete America.

Russia puppet rumors, dubious donors plague German “far right” AfD
How much is true, how much the German deep state gunning for deplorables?
[IsraelTimes] A series of potential scandals is plaguing the far-right Alternative for Germany party ahead of next month’s European Parliament elections.

The party has struggled to explain a number of murky donations to prominent party members in recent months. German authorities are investigating who the money came from.

In addition, German broadcaster ZDF reported Friday that Russian officials in 2017 described one of the party’s politicians, Markus Frohnmaier, as "absolutely under our control." Frohnmaier denies the claim.

A poll published Sunday by German weekly Bild am Sonntag found the party’s support has fallen to 12% ‐ its lowest value in year. The survey of 2,355 respondents between March 28 and April 3 asked about national elections, but recent polls for the May 23-26 European vote have reflected similar or lower support.

A database of Earth observation satellites
[SatelliteObservation] Author has assembled a database of digital high to medium resolution (GSD<50m) Earth observation satellites. The data comes mostly from eoPortal, and the World’s Meteorological Organization’s OSCAR database (for civilian satellites), and Gunter’s Space page helped a lot to make sure it is almost complete. He also used Spaceflight101‘s detailed articles for some satellites, and Ted Molczan’s KH-11 data.

The databases records the name of a satellite, its COSPAR ID, sensor type, resolution (the best one available if there are several sensors), swath width (the largest one if several are available), the operating country or company, if it can downlink its data in real time through a data relay satellite, the name of the manufacturer, the launch date, and the main orbital characteristics.

Low Earth Orbit Signal Intelligence satellites are also included, as well as optical systems using film and launched after 2000 (to avoid filling the database with Cold War film satellites). Satellites launched by universities are not included either, to keep the focus on missions operated by governments or companies.

DataBase at this link

A number of very interesting articles at this site. Thanks for posting.
