Army Veteran Fatally Shot At Party
[LOSANGELES.CBSLOCAL] A 22-year-old Army veteran who recently returned from serving in Afghanistan was fatally shot early Sunday morning while attending a party with friends.

According to the Sylmar Police Department, Francisco Garcia attended a party with several friends on Saturday evening at a home located on Dronfield Street.

Around 2:00 a.m. Sunday, those who attended the party moved up the street to a different location.

Officers explained Garcia was standing on the sidewalk, North of Astoria Street, when two cars stopped near Sylmar High School.

A Hispanic man reportedly exited a dark SUV and proceeded to smash a beer bottle on the ground while yelling at Garcia across the street.

He then walked to the second vehicle, described as a white Toyota or Honda, retrieved a handgun from a second suspect and started shooting at Garcia.

Authorities said Garcia was shot and died at the scene. No other injuries were reported.

"'It appears Francisco was the target of the attack,' said Lt. Paul Vernon, commanding officer of the Mission Detective Division. 'Apparently, a simmering dispute had boiled over

during the night, and this suspect came looking for Francisco. Figuring out the dispute should lead us to the shooter."

Guessing it was testosterone related.

#1  Interesting experiment, but was it conducted in the area where the contaminated topsoil had been removed?

Usually, bacteria and fungi are more resistant to radiation than higher organisms.

If you remove the topsoil, it could take a long time to re-establish the microbial community.

Florida Woman Survives 45 Minutes With No Pulse
[HOSTED.AP.ORG] A Florida mother is home and tending to her new infant less than a month after surviving without a pulse for 45 minutes following complications from a routine cesarean section.

A front man for Boca Raton Regional Hospital told The News Agency that Dare Not be Named on Sunday that a team of medical workers spent three hours attempting to revive the woman after a rare amniotic fluid embolism.

Spokesman Thomas Chakurda says the doctors were preparing to pronounce her death when a blip on a monitor indicated a heartbeat. Despite going 45 minutes without a pulse, she suffered no brain damage during the Sept. 23 ordeal.

"She essentially spontaneously resuscitated when we were about to call the time of death," said Thomas Chakurda, the hospital front man.

Doctors had called the family into the operating room and told them there was nothing more they could do for 40-year-old Ruby Graupera-Cassimiro.

Graupera-Cassimiro gave birth to a healthy daughter before amniotic fluid entered her bloodstream and heart and created a vacuum, stopping circulation. Doctors say condition is often fatal.

Chakurda said the woman's survival is a story of two miracles - her resuscitation and the fact that she survived without serious brain damage.

Medical workers used shock paddles and chest compressions throughout the emergency to try and restore heart beat and circulation, Chakurda said.

"Today she is the picture of health," he said.

Doctors had no immediate explanation for her survival, Chakurda said, calling her case one of "divine providence."

FARC rebels get heavy jail time for killing tribe members
[FRANCE24] An indigenous court convicted seven FARC guerrillas of murdering two leaders of the Nasa tribe in western Colombia on Sunday, sentencing them to between 40 and 60 years in jail and 20 lashes.

The harshest sentence -- 60 years prison time -- was handed down to Carlos Ivan Silva, who confessed to killing two native leaders on Wednesday.

The victims were removing billboards praising the late leader of the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia
FARC or FARC-EP, is either a Marxist-Leninist revolutionary guerrilla organization or a drug cartel based in Colombia. It claims to represent the rural poor in a struggle against Colombia's wealthier classes, and opposes United States influence in Colombia, neo-imperialism, monopolization of natural resources by multinational corporations, and the usual raft of complaints. It funds itself principally through ransom kidnappings, taxation of the drug trade, extortion, shakedowns, and donations. It has lately begun calling itself Bolivarian and is greatly admired by Venezuela's President-for-Life Chavez, who seemingly fantasizes about living in the woods and kidnapping people himself. He provides FARC with safe areas along the border.
, Guillermo Leon Saenz, also known as Alfonso Cano, when they were murdered.

Four other defendants were sentenced to 40 years each for having "fired indiscriminately on other members of the community" alongside Silva, said the leader of the Northern Cauca indigenous councils association, Gabriel Pavi.

Two teenagers also placed in durance vile
Please don't kill me!
were sentenced to 20 lashes and will be held at a rehabilitation center until age 18, at which point a new assembly will reconsider their cases.

The verdicts and sentences were determined after four hours of debate by an assembly of some 3,000 members from the indigenous reserve in the Cauca province.

When crimes are committed in aboriginal territory, the punishment for the accused is decided by the community and not the ordinary justice system.

Pavi had said Friday the guerrillas were captured "in uniform and with rifles" and that "all are indigenous."

Caucasus/Russia/Central Asia
Explosion at bar wounds 8 in Kharkov -- UPDATED

Corrected with additional data on the date of the explosion.

A bomb detonated at a bar in the Ukrainian oblast of Kharkov Saturday night, according to a Russian language report.

According to the report, the bomb exploded at around 2200 hrs (MSK) at the Stena indoor cafe on Rymarska street in Kharkov city while it was filled with patrons.

A witness at the bar said that an unindentified individual left a package next to the bar, which presumably detonated.

The bar manager, identified as Mikail Ozerov told a reporter at the scene that his establishment is used as a collection point for supplies for the Ukrainian police operation in the Donbas, and to help Donbas refugees settle elsewhere in Ukraine. Ozerov said he considered the attack to be an act of terrorism.

Kharkov has an anti Ukrainian guerrilla group operating in the region.

Europe
Berlin marks 25 years since the fall of the Wall
[FRANCE24] Germany on Sunday marked 25 years since the night that the Berlin Wall came down, a watershed moment in the collapse of communism that started many former Soviet countries on the path to independence.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel
...current chancellor of Germany. She was educated in East Germany when is was still run by commies, but in 1989 got involved with the growing democracy movement when the Berlin Wall fell. Merkel is sometimes referred to by Germans as Mom...
spoke Sunday at the opening of a refurbished museum at the site ‐ home to one of the few surviving sections of the Wall.

"The fall of the Berlin Wall showed us that dreams can come true ‐ and that nothing has to stay the way it is, no matter how high the hurdles might seem to be," said Merkel, 60, who has led a reunited Germany since 2005.

"It showed that we have the power to shape our destiny and make things better," she said, noting that people in Ukraine, Syria, Iraq and elsewhere around the world should feel emboldened by the Wall's sudden demise.

"It was a victory of freedom over bondage and it's a message of faith for today's, and future, generations that can tear down the walls ‐ the walls of dictators, of violence and ideologies," she said.

A 15-kilometre (9-mile) row of 8,000 lighted balloons had been erected along the former divide between East and West Germany in what organisers called the "Border of Lights".

The balloons were released into the air one by one on Sunday evening to mark the moment on November 9, 1989, that a senior communist official told a televised news conference that the border would no longer be enforced ‐ a statement that set off a chain of events that brought down one of the Cold War's most potent symbols.

In his remarks to the televised conference, the ruling Politburo's front man, Guenter Schabowski, said the border restrictions would be lifted and that East Germans would be allowed to travel to West Germany and West Berlin. Pressed on when the new policy would take effect, Schabowski seemed uncertain, but said: "To my knowledge, this is immediately, without delay."

Soon, Western media were reporting that East Germany had opened the border and East Berliners were flooding the first crossing on their way West.

Border guards had received no orders to let anyone cross, but they soon gave up trying to hold back the crowds. By midnight, all the border crossings in the city were open.

East Germany's then-leader, Egon Krenz, later said that the plan had been to allow free travel starting the next morning so citizens could line up properly to get exit visas. But with the leadership's control over the border already well and truly lost, Germany was soon on the road to reunification, which happened less than a year later on October 3, 1990.

The collapse of the Wall, which had divided the city for 28 years, was "a point of no return ... from there, things headed toward a whole new world order", said Axel Klausmeier, the director of the city's main Berlin Wall memorial.

An open-air exhibition entitled "100 Wall Stories" will consist of 100 informational exhibits along the lighted installation and will look at the construction of the Wall in 1961, escape attempts, deaths at the Wall, everyday life in the divided city and the peaceful revolution of 1989.

#1  Think there will be teach-ins across the country to educate on the sacrifice of 100 million dead to the socialist god today in commemoration? Nah. The usual suspects will pass judgement on America every day, but will be quite about the blood of communism (or its contemporary manifestation - Progressivism).

Border Patrol stripping agents of their rifles
The News 4 Tucson Investigators have uncovered that some U.S. Border Patrol agents have lost a key part of their arsenal. And that has agents who patrol along the border here, extremely worried.

We learned that U.S. Customs and Border Protection's Offices of Border Patrol and Training and Development are inspecting the quality of agents' M4 carbines throughout Border Patrol sectors nationwide. But agents tell us, some of those M4s have not been replaced. And, we've learned, agents are required to share rifles amongst each other.

"There's a lot of agents that are pretty upset over it," said Art del Cueto, president of the Border Patrol's Tucson Sector union. "We know it's a dangerous job. We know what we signed on for but we want to have as much of the equipment as we need to perform the job."

The M4 carbine is used by the U.S. military and by Border Patrol agents. It's even used by the Border Patrol's tactical unit, BORTAC. Agent Brian Terry was carrying the M4 when he was shot and killed in December 2010.

Del Cueto tells us that because some of those M4s have not been replaced, agents are pooling their weapons, which makes it difficult to personalize the settings on a rifle, such as the sights.

"The problem is they are now pool guns so what happens is instead of having their individual ones they have sighted in they're having to use a pool weapon that you don't know who used it before you," del Cueto said.

Customs and Border Protection released a statement to the News 4 Tucson Investigators last week, stating: "CBP's Offices of Border Patrol and Training and Development are jointly inspecting the serviceability of M4 carbines throughout Border Patrol Sectors nationwide. Some of (the) inspected M4 carbines were deemed unserviceable and removed from inventory to alleviate safety concerns. Inspections will continue to ensure the unserviceable M4 carbines are repaired or replaced for reintroduction into the field. No further information is available at this time."

Santa Cruz County Sheriff Tony Estrada grew worried when told of the delay in redistributing rifles to agents.

"This is a concern for the officers and for the community as well," he said. "We want to make sure that they have all the equipment that they need to be able to provide the safest environment we possibly can."

Jeff Prather is a former drug enforcement agent who now runs the Warrior School in Tucson. He says agents have reached out to him about the rifle shortage.

He said agents stand the risk of being over-powered on the border.

"Cartels have always been better equipped, the paramilitary forces, the corrupt Mexican soldiers and federales at times," Prather said.

He says agents have contacted him and told him about their concerns about sharing the weapons.

"And now they're seriously concerned. Because if they're concerned enough to reach out and contact me and reach out so we get this message out, they are not only frustrated but they are in fear for their lives."

Prather believes removing some of the rifles maybe politically motivated. He says he was told that many of these guns are being removed for issues that are easily repaired like the firing pin and bolt.

He broke down a M4 as he spoke.

"This weapon is designed to be able to be in a battle situation, changed out rather quickly even so fast that modern weapons have areas to hold spare bolts," he said.

That makes him suspicious that the agency could be disarming its agents.

For now, union president Del Cueto says agents just want their rifles back.

"I hope they replace these weapons as soon as possible or give us some kind of answer as to how they plan on replacing them," he said.
Ummmm . . . .

Israel-Palestine-Jordan
Israel Gives Palestinians Ebola Screening Equipment
[Ynet] Acquiescing to request from Paleostinian Authority, Israel transfers special thermometer, hazman suits, dozens of laboratory kits, to be used in Rafah Crossing in Gazoo Strip.

Israel transferred Ebola screening tools on Sunday to Paleostinian Authority in the hopes it will help PA officials in diagnosing the virus among those entering the West Bank from Jordan and the Gazoo Strip through the Rafah Crossing. The transfer was made following a Paleostinian request.

The aim behind the move, among other reasons, is to prevent the possible spread of the deadly virus not only in the Gazoo Strip, but into Israel's territories as well. As part of the agreement, the Allenby border crossing with Jordan will also be supplied with the detection devices.

The medical equipment was transferred to the Health Ministry offices in the Gazoo Strip, from where it was taken to the Rafah Crossing. Hamas, always the voice of sweet reason, is the sole party responsible for the transport of the equipment once it reaches Gazoo.

The equipment includes a special thermometer that can measure a person's temperature with no bodily contact, which was transferred to Hamas security forces, who have exclusive control over the Rafah area. Also transferred were dozens of laboratory kits for diagnosing the virus through the use of a blood test, as well as protective suits.

The act of collaboration benefits both parties, as Israel recognizes the possibility that the reach of the deadly virus to the Gazoo Strip, imported from African countries, increases the chances that the disease could spread into Israeli territories.

In recent weeks, the Rafah Crossing was closed due to the latest terrorist attack in Sinai, but the transfer of the equipment has already been made to ensure that Gazoo's Health Ministry officials will be able to prepare accordingly.

The transfer of the equipment into the Gazoo Strip is only a small part of the overall collaboration between Israel and the Paleostinian Authority over this matter â even in times of great tensions between the two sides.

As part of the collaboration efforts, regular meetings are being conducted between the parties under the supervision of the Israeli civilian committee, headed by Coordinator of Government Activities in the Territories, Major-General Yoav Mordechai and the Paleostinian Minister of Civil Affairs Hussein al-Sheikh. The meetings, which were held in Israel, were also attended by representatives from Gazoo's Health Ministry.

According to the agreements reached, Paleostinians suspected of having contracted Ebola will be transferred to the hospital in Jericho, where preparations were made regarding examinations of people who may have been infected by the virus.

Paleostinian medical authorities were also equipped with laboratory kits and protective suits. In the case of a suspected Ebola case, laboratory samples will be transferred from Jericho to the World Health Organization (WHO) for inspection, under strict security measures.

Southeast Asia
Three Malaysian Muslims win court bid to cross-dress
[ENGLISH.ALARABIYA.NET] Three Malaysian Moslem transgenders on Friday won a landmark court ruling that challenged a religious law banning them from cross-dressing. Activists called it a victory for human rights
...which are often intentionally defined so widely as to be meaningless...
in a conservative Southeast Asian nation.

A three-judge panel of the Court of Appeals unanimously ruled that the Shariah law in Negeri Sembilan state was discriminatory as it failed to recognize men diagnosed with gender identity issues. It said the law deprived transgenders of "the right to live with dignity."

"This is degrading, oppressive and inhumane," said Judge Mohamad Hishammuddin Mohamad Yunus.

Hishammuddin said the Islamic law was aimed at curbing homosexual and lesbian activities that led to the spread of HIV. The present case "has nothing to do with homosexuality," but was about Moslem men with a medical condition, he added.

A lower court dismissed the case in 2012, saying the three transgenders must adhere to Islamic law because they were Moslem and born male. The three, who have been certified by doctors to have gender identity issues, appealed the decision.

The Jewish Journal is the largest Jewish weekly newspaper in the United States outside of New York City. Founded in 1985, The Jewish Journal’s mission is to serve our community through quality independent journalism. The Jewish Journal is available at over 800 pickup locations from Santa Barbara to Pasadena to the South Bay.

3. What is JewishJournal.com?
JewishJournal.com is America’s most widely used Jewish news site. It contains local, national and global news updated daily, as well as blogs from noted Jewish personalities and writers including Marty Kaplan, Dennis Prager, Gina Nahai, Raphael Sonenshein and Rabbi David Wolpe.

I have to admit I've never heard of them. In my defence, I've never been to California; and I also didn't know until recently that the New York Post is conservative, demonstrating a bicoastal ignorance of such things.

#5  The bigger question is whether Reid is a complete waste of oxygen or a complete and utter waste of oxygen.

How a man with the personality of a rabid raccoon ever got elected as a Senator and as a majority leader is baffling.

#6  Okay - Fred's magic words bite here meaning I can't use direct words.
Mystic, consider the main business in that part of Nevada then make Reid it's prime lawyer.

#9  In reading the article, it was only one Mormon bishop who said that, in his opinion, Harry is not temple worthy. A Mormon bishop is not like a bishop in the Catholic Church. A Mormon bishop is a lay position. For example, my Mormon daughter-in-law's bishop is a dentist.

On the other hand, I would really like to see some Catholic bishops start excommunicating people like Pelosi.

#10  Condorman, Do you mean land grabbing extortion for the Chinese to own solar in our grid? Or do you mean mobster owned gambling? Do you mean oil deals with Russia to make his son rich? How about corrupt dealings with the SEIU? Because I know you cant be talking about prostitution....

#12  Don't know enough about Mormons to know if he's worthy of them or not, but I know he's not worthy of criminally depleting our oxygen supply.
