Afghanistan
Woman Stoned to Death by Husband
[Tolo News] Thirty-five year old Suraya was stoned to death by her husband in western Herat
...a venerable old Persian-speaking city in western Afghanistan, populated mostly by Tadjiks, which is why it's not as blood-soaked as areas controlled by Pashtuns...
province on Friday night, local officials said on Sunday.

Governor of Kohsan district of Herat, Juma Gul Rahmani, said the tragic incident took place a little after midnight after a verbal fight between Suraya and her husband Ghulaam Sakhi.

"Her husband is a drug addict," Rahmani said. "The two got into a verbal fight that escalated her husband's anger leading him to stone her to death."

He added that Suraya's husband, older son and mother-in-law are in the custody of the police for investigation.

"The police have are investigating the case. Her body was found inside their home."

Suraya is survived by four children. She was married to Ghulaam Sakhi for 15 long years.

#1  What? Have the Islamics adopted Dylan's song as a part of their religion; "Everybody Must Get Stoned?"

Well, they'll stone ya when you're trying to be so good
They'll stone ya just a-like they said they would
They'll stone ya when you're tryin' to go home
Then they'll stone ya when you're there all alone

But I would not feel so all alone
Everybody must get stoned

I doubt that stoning or honor killings will ever change for Muslims unless they give up the religion, they become civilized or the religion is outlawed by civilized society as barbaric.

Caucasus/Russia/Central Asia
37 civilians die in shelling in Donetsk and Lugansk

By Chris Covert
Rantburg.com

A total of 37 civilians were killed Thursday in air and artillery strikes in the contested Ukrainian cities of Donetsk and Lugansk, according to a report posted on the online edition of Voice of Sevastopol.

According to those reports Ukrainian forces have been using medium and heavy rocket artillery systems, such as the BM-21 122mm rocket launcher and the 300mm rocket launcher system known by its moniker Smerch, or death, targeting industrial as well as civilian areas.

A total of 20 civilians were killed in one artillery strike in Lugansk when the fire missions hit in various locations.

Several artillery strikes were recorded in Donetsk including Zugres, the power plant near Zuyevsk, at the school, on the children's beach and on the city stadium. Those strikes resulted in 15 dead and 19 wounded. According to the report, two children were among the dead.

Howitzer artillery strikes hit the Budyonovskiy, Kuibyshevskiy, Leninskiy, Petrovsky and Kievskiy districts of Donetsk, but no specific death or injury tolls were reported. The report said people were killed, however. Reports say in at least one mission, white phosphorus rounds were used.

Russian nationalist forces counterattacked against Ukrainian forces in the area of Gorlovka, which is northeast of Donetsk and near Krasnii Luch, which is east. In Krasnii Luch Ukrainian forces have been trying for going on ten days to cut the lines of communication between Lugansk and Donetsk. Torez, Shakhtyorsk, Snezhnoye and Miusinsk continue to be held by Russian nationalist forces.

Those several areas which Russian nationalists hold also contain Ukrainian military formations which are unable to move or fight, but Russia nationalist forces are unable to liquidate the pockets, due to a lack of forces.

Friday, August 15th

According to reports, remnants of the Ukrainian 30th Mechanized Rifle Brigade are close to surrendering to Russian nationalist forces.

The unit had been surrounded a few days ago near Krasnii Luch. Media reports had it that soldiers of the formation reported all heavy equipment lost along with provisions.

Another smaller formation, the battalion "Gorin" deployed near the border with Russia is reportedly nearly complete destroyed as well.

Yet another Ukrainian police unit, the battalion "Aydar" encircled immediately south of Lugansk is reportedly down to 30 percent of establishment, and facing attack from three sides.

According to data, Ukrainian forces now control Chernukhino, Bulavinskoye in the Luhansk region and Aleksandrovskoye in the Donetsk region, while Russian nationalists have taken Zimogorye and Rodakovo in Lugansk.

As reported two days ago, Ukrainian tanks overran the airport in Lugansk and now control the village of Novosvetlovka. That position effectively blocks the road linking Lugansk to Russia. Russian nationalists said the Ukrainians took the action in order to starve residents in Dontesk and Lugansk.

The block at Novosvetlovka is not considered significant because Russian nationalist commanders estimate that the Ukrainian army has about 40,000 effectives in the ring surrounding the two cities, perhaps enough to encircle the cities but not enough to take either one by storm.

Little information is available about the humanitarian convoy which entered Ukraina Friday. The Ukrainian government's contention that its forces destroyed a large armor formation by artillery has been dismissed by Russian nationalist commanders, who have demanded proof in the form of photos or videos.

Says one report: "According to the journalist Nikolay Vasergov, the militia in Krasnodon had a lot of fun discussing this pleasant-for-Kiev news. To all appearance, the Russian tanks should have followed right through this city. Amazingly, nobody noticed them."

Russian nationalists claim that whatever Ukrainian forces destroyed was likely the humanitarian convoy. A separate report in Voice of Sevastopol said that a militia group captured an intelligence unit of the Ukrainian National Guard which was alleged to be preparing an attack on the Russian convoy.

Russian nationalists claim that 11 civilians were killed in shelling in Donetsk, while three were killed in Gorlovka.

Reputed Kyrgyz Crime Boss 'Cannot Be Extradited' From Russia
[RFERL.ORG] A reputed crime boss from Kyrgyzstan who was released from prison last year under false pretenses and left for Russia cannot be extradited to Kyrgyzstan.

The Kyrgyz prosecutor-general's office told RFE/RL on August 5 that Aziz Batukaev's extradition is impossible at the moment as he is facing charges of illegal weapon possession in Russia's Chechen Republic.

Kyrgyz authorities said last month that they are seeking the extradition of Batukaev who had reportedly been tossed in the slammer
... anything you say can and will be used against you, whether you say it or not...
in Russia's North Caucasus.

Batukaev, a Chechen, was sentenced to almost 17 years in jail in Kyrgyzstan in 2006 for involvement in several serious crimes, including the murders of a Kyrgyz politician and an Interior Ministry official.

Prison officials released Batukaev in April 2013, saying that he was suffering from leukemia.

His medical report was later found to have been falsified.

Separatist Shuffle: Who's In, Who's Out Among Donbas Rebels
[RFERL.ORG] Some are in Moscow. Others have mysteriously disappeared.

As Ukraine's forces surround the last pro-Russian separatist strongholds in Donetsk and Luhansk, many of the more prominent faces of the Russia-backed separatists appear to be dropping out of the fight. And they are largely being replaced by local unknowns.

Here's a rundown of who's in and who's out in the self-proclaimed people's republics of Donetsk and Luhansk. (Almost everyone included in a similar breakdown in June is now on the outs.)

Ukrainian artist still missing after ridiculing separatists
A series of street artworks mocking separatists in eastern Ukraine has landed their creator in hot water with the insurgents.

Donetsk artist Serhiy Zakharov has been missing for more than a week after gracing the streets of his hometown with pictures ridiculing local rebel leaders. He is believed to be held by insurgents in the basement of the former Ukrainian Security Service building in Donetsk.

Information obtained by his friends and relatives says the rebels have placed him "under investigation", fueling fears for his life.

Zakharov's brother Andriy says the artist was seized by a group of armed men during a raid of his home late on August 6. Neighbors say the men wore insignias of the self-proclaimed Donetsk People's Republic (DNR). His computer and artwork were also taken.

Zakharov's installations, painted figures cut out of plywood, first appeared in the streets of Donetsk on July 11. One of them represented Sharikov, the foolish hero of Mikhail Bulgakov's novel "Heart of a Dog" wearing a DNR uniform. Others featured separatist fighters wearing ominous masks.

Perhaps Zakharov's best-known installation targeted the DNR's then "defense minister," Igor Girkin, aka Strelkov. The picture showed Strelkov holding a gun to his head with the caption "just do it", and quickly went viral on the Internet.

Malaysian police investigate teen for liking Israel
A teenage student in Malaysia is being investigated under the Sedition Act after he "liked" a Facebook page titled "I Love Israel". State police chief Datuk Abdul Rahim Hanafi said the case is being probed under Section 4 of the Act.

The student is now embroiled in a controversy after his liking of the page became known to one of his teachers. The teacher shared it on her Facebook page, criticizing the student, attracting criticism and threats from other Facebook users. There were calls to boycott the student, and one Facebook user commented the student should be burned.

Rahim said, "He is now living in fear for liking the page. He has since shut down his Facebook page and lodged a police report yesterday. The boy and his teacher had gone to give their statements at the Seberang Prai Selatan district police headquarters.

"Several other people, including teachers and students from the same school, will also be called to assist the investigation," he added.

It was reported that the boy claimed he had accidentally clicked "like" for the pro-Israel page.

Seberang Prai Selatan district police chief Superintendent Shafien Mamat said the police will probe why he had liked the page as well as the threats made against him.

Meanwhile, Penang education department director Osman Hussain said the teacher responsible will be served a reminder not to take to Facebook to discuss her students. He said, "If she does it again, she will be transferred out of Penang," he said today, adding that the department's hands are tied since it is now a police case.
