Abandoned Croc Captured at California Strip Mall
[An Nahar] This is one crocodile that didn't want to become a handbag.

Police in the Sacramento suburb of Roseville captured a 4-foot-long crocodile Wednesday near a T.J. Maxx store in a strip mall.

Police spokeswoman Dee Dee Gunther says the animal apparently escaped from a box left in front of a reptile shop called The Serpentarium with a sign saying "Nile Crocodile. Contact Rescue."

Authorities say the crocodile is feisty but had duct tape wrapped around its jaws.

California Department of Fish and Wildlife Lt. Patrick Foy says the agency is "reasonably sure" the animal is indeed a Nile crocodile. It's looking for a zoo or other facility to take it.

Foy says the crocodile appears to have broken teeth, perhaps from biting wire cages.

California bans ownership of crocodiles.
You can have sex with it, though. Regardless of gender.

US senator joins critics of federal cattle roundup
[SACBEE] A Republican U.S. senator added his voice Wednesday to critics of a federal cattle roundup fought by a Nevada rancher who claims longstanding grazing rights on remote public rangeland about 80 miles northeast of Las Vegas

Sen. Dean Heller of Nevada said he told new U.S. Bureau of Land Management chief Neil Kornze in Washington, D.C., that law-abiding Nevadans shouldn't be penalized by an "overreaching" agency.

Republican Gov. Brian Sandoval pointed earlier to what he called "an atmosphere of intimidation," resulting from the roundup and said he believed constitutional rights were being trampled.

Heller said he heard from local officials, residents and the Nevada Cattlemen's Association and remained "extremely concerned about the size of this closure and disruptions with access to roads, water and electrical infrastructure."

The federal government has shut down a scenic but windswept area about half the size of the state of Delaware to round up about 900 cattle it says are trespassing.

BLM and National Park Service officials didn't immediately respond Wednesday to criticisms of the roundup that started Saturday and prompted the closure of the 1,200-square-mile area through May 12.

It's seen by some as the latest battle over state and federal land rights in a state with deep roots in those disputes, including the Sagebrush Rebellion of the 1970s and '80s. Nevada, where various federal agencies manage or control more than 80 percent of the land, is among several Western states where ranchers have challenged federal land ownership.

The current showdown pits rancher Cliven Bundy's claims of ancestral rights to graze his cows on open range against federal claims that the cattle are trespassing on arid and fragile habitat of the endangered desert tortoise. Bundy has said he owns about 500 branded cattle on the range and claims the other 400 targeted for roundup are his, too.

BLM and Park Service officials see threats in Bundy's promise to "do whatever it takes" to protect his property and in his characterization that the dispute constitutes a "range war."

U.S. Rep. Steven Horsford, D-Las Vegas, noted that BLM officials were enforcing federal court orders that Bundy remove his animals. The legal battle has been waged for decades.

#1  Where does Harry Reid stand on this situation ? Isn't he from out there? It is obvious that the US govt. WILL if they think they can. Let's shoot our own people over some cows. Let's kill some voters because we can.

What is your citizenship worth in the land of the Free? The tyrants are always there...the only thing that stops them is fear of the citizenry. Rebellion is a right like so many others. You only are free if you are willing to fight.

#2  Saw an interesting photo article yesterday where the Bureau of Land Managment was routed by the public, despite guns drawn and violent harassment
(By the cops) the people were loud and right, with the cops leaving (en mass, 8-10 cars) when they couldn't cow the gathered people and make them leave despite the LAW having sevral Police Dogs (On leashes), Police ORDERED the PEOPLE to leave and several people told the Police NO, and accused the cops of harrasssment.

The cops were clearly out of line here, watch for the whole thing to be quietly suppressed.

Peoople will NOT stand for this.

#5  Reid commented two days ago he is in favor of the BLM.

The people stopped a convoy of feds coming off range because there was a dump truck and a back hoe coming off the range. That meant they were killing and burying the cattle.

#10  Where does Harry Reid stand on this situation ?

Well he is a big supporter of cowboy poetry.

Look, cows are either calving or have some young ones. Not done right, the calves will die. If those federali have those cows bunched up with no shade or breeze or water then they die to. It is my default that the people in charge of seizing the cattle are only used to stepping in their own bullshit.

#11  OldSpook is on to the larger issue: Federal ownership of land in the West is much higher (for various historical reasons) than east of the Mississippi.

There would be a number of benefits from a planned careful sell-off of these Federal lands. Keep Yosemite and Yellowstone, but a fair bit of the land is just that -- land. Sell it to the ranchers, farmers, timber industry etc., and let them make it productive (and tax accordingly). Long term it would be a win-win for the country.

'Secret polls' sealed decision to annex Crimea: Putin
[Al Ahram] Russian President Vladimir Putin
...Second and fourth President of the Russian Federation and the first to remain sober. Putin is credited with bringing political stability and re-establishing something like the rule of law, which occasionally results in somebody dropping dead from polonium poisoning. Under Putin, a new group of business magnates controlling significant swathes of Russia's economy has emerged, all of whom have close personal ties to Putin. The old bunch, without close personal ties to Putin, are in jail or in exile or dead...
said on Thursday that his decision to take the Crimean peninsula under Russian control was made final after "secret polls" showed that its people wanted to be ruled by Moscow.

"My decisions were finalised after people's attitudes became clear," Putin said.

"We weren't prepared for such a turn of events. To tell you the truth, we could imagine how people felt but did not know for sure."

"Only after conducting the first sociological surveys, which, to tell you the truth, were done in secret, the numbers were pretty close to reality," he said while meeting with supporters of the All-Russian Popular Front, a group at the forefront of his re-election campaign in 2012.

"It became clear once and for all that we have chosen our line of action well," he said. "The first poll showed that about 80 percent of Crimean population are for joining Russia."

Later "when the process began to develop" at the referendum on March 16, "this figure grew more to nearly 97 percent," he said.

"That is an amazing figure," he added.

Hindu schoolgirl abducted in Lalmonirhat
[Dhaka Tribune] A Hindu schoolgirl was kidnapped from Durakuti village of Mogholhat union in Lalmonirhat Sadar upazila as she was on route to attend the Ashtamisnan (religious bathing) festival on Monday.

The girl, Maloti Rani, 13, is the daughter of Jagadish Chandra Ram, a resident of the village. She is a seventh grader at the Bisbari Ebatonnesa Girls' High School.

Jagadish lodged a case with Lalmonirhat Sadar cop shoppe against four people on Wednesday night, three of whom were unnamed.

Police said Ismail Hossain and his cohorts kidnapped the girl as she was on her way to the festival held on the bank of Ratnai river in the village on Monday morning.

Maloti Rani's younger sister Jaymoni Rani, 11, was with her when she was picked up and she immediately informed her parents of the incident. The abductors, however, left the spot fast.

Jagadish said Ismail, son of Abdul Hamid of Shalmara village of Aditmari upazila, had been harassing his daughter for the past one year.

"My wife and I protested against Ismail's actions several times but it didn't stop," he said, adding that he didn't go for legal action for fear of losing his family's dignity.

"In the last two weeks, Ismail threatened me twice that he would kidnap my daughter," said the girl's mother Jayanti Rani.

"Ismail is a notorious man in the village. He can do anything to my daughter," she spoke worriedly.

Officer-in-charge of Lalmonirhat Sadar cop shoppe Mansur Ali said police would take necessary action in this regard.

Exclusive: Key General Splits With Obama Over Ukraine
The commander of NATO is insisting that the West do more to protect Ukraine from a possible Russian invasion. But the Obama administration has other plans.

Late last month, as the world was still reeling from Russia’s annexation of Crimea, the Supreme Allied Commander of NATO was warning Congress that Moscow was preparing to make another move.

During classified briefings on March 26 and March 27, Gen. Philip Breedlove painted for members of the House Armed Services Committee a bleak picture of Russia’s actions—and warned that the United States was not taking steps it could to help Ukraine better defend itself. On several points—from estimates of Moscow’s troops to intelligence-sharing with Russia’s likely adversaries—Breedlove’s briefing directly contradicted the message coming from other branches of the Obama administration.

Breedlove, a four star Air Force general, was careful not to tell members of Congress anything that directly undermined the authority of the Commander-in-Chief during his March briefings. But lawmakers and Congressional staff members who attended these sessions say it was clear that Breedlove felt he was stifled to respond adequately to the crisis in Ukraine.

The quiet protests from one of Obama’s most important generals at the moment reveal an important policy rift inside the administration. While President Obama, the joint chiefs of staff and Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel have hesitated to provide too much assistance to the interim government in Ukraine, Breedlove has wanted to do more.

In a statement for The Daily Beast, Breedlove acknowledged that he met with members of both parties in Congress in the last week in March. “I provided my estimation of Russian capabilities and that estimation was well-received by the Members. As these sessions were classified, I can only get into generalities.” Breedlove added that he discussed a number of issues including the U.S. consideration of non-lethal aid to Ukraine. “I was clear that our efforts were aimed at reassuring our NATO Allies and European partners of our commitment and resolve,” he said.

Members of Congress, Congressional staff and U.S. defense officials say Breedlove has wanted to brief Ukraine’s military on the detailed intelligence U.S. spy agencies had gathered on Russia’s troop movements and analysis of Russian war plans.

The General also told the members and staff that detailed estimates of Russian troops showed the number of forces preparing to invade Ukraine numbered 80,000. Other U.S. intelligence agencies and the State Department have said the total number of forces numbered around 40,000. On Thursday, Breedlove published a set of commercial satellite photos showing Russian troop positions in Ukraine. On his Twitter feed he wrote, “Russian forces around Ukraine fully equipped/capable to invade. Public denial undermines progress. Images tell story.”

* CNN AM > SERGEI LAVROV = "RUSSIA HAS NO INTEREST IN ANNEXING ANY PART OF SOUTH-EAST UKRAINE [read, YET?]".

Russia's concept of Federalism-for-Ukraine is actually decentralized, confederatist or highly flexible Federal CANTONISM/CANTONIZATION, e.g. SWITZERLAND or BELGIUM, where Russia may have formal Ukrainian consent to deploy RussFed troops in pro-Russia Cantons, while NATO-EU may do ditto wid anti-Russian Cantons; + RUSSIA'S CONTROL OF THE CRIMEA AGZ THE SOON-TO-BE-NUCLEAR HARD BOYZ + MUSLIM NATIONS IS NON-NEGOTIABLE.

Putin is waiting for the Bammer + Kerry + EU to accede to Russia's "defensive" schemeas - iff the former do not, PUTIN WILL ACT UNILATERALLY IN RUSSIA'S INTERESTS, BY + FOR RUSSIA ONLY WIDOUT HEED OF THE US-WEST. HE WILL SEND RUSSFED TROPS INTO THE REST OF UKRAINE AS RUSSIA, N-O-T THE US OR NATO-EU OR THE UNO, DEEMS FIT.

Turkey keeps YouTube ban in place despite court orders
[Al Ahram] Turkey's government on Thursday said it would keep its block on YouTube in place despite two separate courts ordering the ban be lifted.

In a statement, Turkey's Information and Communications Technologies Authority (BTK) said the ban would remain as illegal content was still available on the video-sharing site.

"The measure blocking access to the youtube.com internet site remains in place because some of the content (deemed illegal) keeps being broadcast," the BTK said in a statement posted online.

YouTube was originally blocked on March 27 after an audio recording of top civilian and military officials appeared, allegedly of high-level security talks on Syria.
