UK man provides his own wanted poster photo
[Iran Press TV Latest] A British man has sent a photo of himself to the media to replace the mugshot printed of him as a house burglary wanted.

The 23-year-old Matthew Maynard sent the South Wales Evening Post a photo showing him standing in front of a police van, Reuters reported.

Maynard, who was on the run from police sent the picture because he disliked the one that had been printed of him as part of a crackdown on crime in Swansea.

South Wales Police thanked him for his help, saying, "Everyone in Swansea will know what he looks like now."

Airman Elvis Stops Armed Robbery Of Army LTC (Ret)
An Air Force recruiter stopped a robbery in progress while attending his unit's annual training conference Oct. 29 here.

Staff Sgt. Cesar Munoz, a recruiter with the 344th Recruiting Squadron stationed in Killeen, Texas, subdued two assailants attempting to mug an elderly man at the Sam's Town Hotel and Casino in Shreveport.

Sergeant Munoz and his wife, April, had just left the squadron's annual promotion party at the hotel and were heading to the casino. The party had featured a Halloween theme, so Sergeant Munoz entered dressed as Elvis, complete with white sequined jumper, sideburns and gold sunglasses.

Shortly after entering the gaming room, Mrs. Munoz noticed two men acting suspicious around an older man, who had just won a substantial amount of money. Soon thereafter, the Air Force couple saw one of the men follow the older man into the bathroom, while the other stayed outside. At his wife's urging, Sergeant Munoz went in the bathroom to assess the situation.

"As I walked in, I instantly felt the tension and frustration of one of the suspects," said the eight-year Air Force veteran. "He was clearly frustrated because he was not expecting someone else to come in the restroom dressed as Elvis and mess with his plan."

Sergeant Munoz pretended to mind his own business, but the attacker ran toward the older man and attempted to bring him to the ground. Sergeant Munoz immediately rushed to his defense and pushed the attacker toward the wall, whereupon the man hit his forehead. At that moment, according to the Air Force recruiter, the second assailant entered and picked up a plastic "Caution" sign and attempted to strike the elderly man. Sergeant Munoz shielded the victim from the attacker and held them all at bay. By this time, Mrs. Munoz had called for the hotel security guards, who immediately arrived and arrested the perpetrators.

"Sergeant Munoz has long been an outstanding Airman and represents all the core values we hold so dear: integrity, service and excellence," said Lt. Col. Sean McKenna, the 344th RCS commander. "His courage and quick thinking prevented a terrible crime from occurring. I am so proud of him for stepping up when the time called for it."

Sergeant Munoz, a liquid fuels specialist before becoming a recruiter, was the squadron's rookie recruiter of the year in 2008. He said he wasn't scared as events unfolded; only that he "was just trying to save a guy who needed my help."

His selfless act was not lost on the victim. It turned the elderly man was a retired Army lieutenant colonel. He thanked Sergeant Munoz for his actions.

As for Elvis, he left the building a hero.

Marine Reservist Seriously Fouls Up
A U.S. Marine reservist attacked a visiting Greek Orthodox priest he believed to be a terrorist, Tampa police say. When the priest tried seeking directions from Jasen D. Bruce, 28, of Tampa, on Monday, Bruce struck the priest with a tire iron and chased him.

Police say he attacked the Rev. Alexios Marakis, 29, of Crete, Greece, who was visiting St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Cathedral in Tarpon Springs and wound up lost in Tampa.

Marakis had performed a blessing of another retired Greek priest in the West Shore area and then accidentally exited Interstate 275 north into downtown Tampa. He followed cars into the Seaport Channelside Apartments on Twiggs Street and got out to ask Bruce for help.

Bruce hit him over the head with a tire iron and chased him for three blocks, to the corner of Madison and Meridian avenues, police say.

"During the chase, the suspect called 911 and claimed an Arabic male attempted to rob him and he was going to take him into custody," a Tampa Police Department news release states. "When officers arrived, the suspect claimed the man was a terrorist."

Marakis, who speaks limited English, was treated at Tampa General Hospital and released. Marakis declined to comment today, saying he did not speak much English. The Rev. Michael Eaccarino of St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Cathedral said Marakis is doing well.

Police came to Bruce's home for a follow-up interview. Bruce's lawyer was there, and Bruce wasn't helpful, police say. Bruce was arrested about 6:35 p.m. Monday in the first-floor parking garage of 1120 E. Twiggs St. He was charged with aggravated battery with a deadly weapon.

Officers say they are trying to determine if the attack meets the standard for a hate crime.

RIP Wing Commander Jack Rose, Who Fought The Whole War

#1  This portion of the story is interesting, . . .

"The following day Rose attacked a Heinkel 111 and closed to within a few yards to shoot the bomber's port engine. Oil from the engine covered the windscreen of his Hurricane so he climbed away, slowed the aircraft down to almost stalling speed, loosened his harness, stood on his seat and leant out of the cockpit in an attempt to clean the windscreen."

I don't think they go over that procedure in pilot training nowadays. Any RB pilots ever do this?

China-Japan-Koreas
Is China headed toward collapse?
Hat tip, Instapundit
...thereÂ’s a growing group of market professionals who see a different picture altogether. These self-styled China bears take the less popular view: that the much-vaunted Chinese economic miracle is nothing but a paper dragon. In fact, they argue that the Chinese have dangerously overheated their economy, building malls, luxury stores and infrastructure for which there is almost no demand, and that the entire system is teetering toward collapse.

Economy
U.S. now beating European unemployment rates
For many on the left, the lament for years has been: Why can't America be more like Europe? Why can't the American lifestyle be more like the European lifestyle? Why can't our food be more like Europe's? Why can't rustic Americans be more like sophisticated Europeans? The sentiment has resurfaced in recent months as the health-care debate has raged on -- why can't the American health-care system be more like Europe's?

Well, America is now just like Europe in one respect: the unemployment rate.

The official U.S. unemployment rate, reported last Friday, now stands at 10.2 percent. It shot up from 9.8 percent in September, blasting through expectations and well besting the European average.

According to the European Union, the unemployment rate in the 16-nation Euro area in September (the most recent month available) was 9.7 percent.

Scozzafava takes on Palin
Dede Scozzafava, the woman who has become the symbol of moderate Republicanism, is taking a shot at former Republican vice presidential hopeful Sarah Palin, the woman who has become the darling of the Republican Party's conservative grassroots.
Chum, meet barracuda shark ...
In a new interview, the state assemblywoman also lets loose on former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, who chose to endorse Conservative Party candidate Doug Hoffman over Scozzafava, her party's official nominee, in the closely-watched race in New York's 23rd congressional district.

The Hoffman campaign and many of his supporters targeted Scozzafava on some of her more moderate views, particularly on social issues.

The growing conservative support for Hoffman, including the endorsements from Palin and other prominent conservatives, eventually led Scozzafava - who had been hand-picked by local party leaders - to drop out of the race just days before Election Day.

"How can Sarah Palin come out and endorse someone who can't answer some basic questions?" Scozzafava told the Washington Post. "Do these people even know who they are endorsing?"

In the interview, Scozzafava - who ended up backing the race's victor, Democrat Bill Owens - sounded a bitter note about how she was treated by members of her own party.

"It was organized," Scozzafava told the Post about the attacks against her by Palin, other prominent conservative figures, and conservative advocacy groups. "There is a lot of us who consider ourselves Republicans, of the Party of Lincoln. If they don't want us with them, we're going to work against them."

Allah's greatest gift.......a goat with 3 penises
Call it birth defect or wish of the Almighty, a goat with six legs, four testicles and three penis will be spared from holy sacrifice on the occasion of Id-ul-Juha (Bakrid) this year.

While the black-coloured goat, barely one-year-old and weighing around 10 kg, is all set to attract attention during the goat exhibition prior to the festival, the owner of the goat has ruled out any chances of sacrifice of the unique goat on the auspicious day.

"This goat is a gift of God and the sacrifice of such a goat is not allowed in Islam," said Sher Mohammed, the owner of the goat, while talking to TOI on Sunday. "The goat can be displayed during Bakrid exhibition, but sacrifice of the goat is strictly prohibited," he added.

Maoists block highways to Nepals capital
[Dawn] Nepal's former Maoist rebels, waving hammer-and-sickle flags, blocked roads to the capital on Tuesday in protest at the reinstatement of the army chief, the first time they have taken such action since the end of the civil war three years ago.

The Maoist-led government fired the army chief, General Rookmangud Kawatal, in May saying he had refused to take orders. But the move was reversed by the president, prompting the Maoists to quit the government and plunging the country into crisis.

Maoist activists danced on the roads, or sat in front of vehicles, in a protest that may damage the tourism-dependent economy and has raised fears about Nepal's fragile peace.

Supporters of the Communist Party of Nepal (Maoist), the former rebels, gathered on the highways connecting Katmandu with the rest of the Himalayan nation.

At the Thankot checkpoint, the main entrance to Katmandu, hundreds of Maoist supporters held banners and their party's red flag, stopping vehicles and chanting slogans.

Binod Singh, traffic police chief in Katmandu, said the highways were shut down by the protests but that there were no reports of violence.

The airport was open and flights were operating in and out of Katmandu. The Maoists had initially planned to shut down the nation's only international airport, but withdrew their plan following pressure from Western diplomats.

Nepal became a republic last year after abolishing the 239-year-old monarchy under a 2006 deal with the Maoists.

'The president should apologise for his decision or the prime minister can make a statement in the parliament saying the move by the president was wrong,' Maoist spokesman Dinanath Sharma said.

The Maoists, who waged a decade-long conflict against the monarchy from 1996, regularly blocked all roads to hill-ringed Kathmandu to stop supplies of essential goods during the war.

Fresh polio case reported in Swat
[Geo News] A latest case of a child affected by polio has surfaced, which has now mounted the number of Polio-affected children to 18 in Swat, Geo News reports on Tuesday.

A source at EPI Program NWFP told that the rise in polio cases in swat is a result of breach in polio vaccination drive since last 2 years.

Polio cases have also risen in FATA, the sources informed. 17 cases of polio have surfaced in FATA only; among them, 3 are from Mohmand Agency, 13 from Bajaur Agency and one case has been reported from South Waziristan.

Polio eradication measures are being taken in FATA and Swat, sources said.

Kuwaiti MP threatens to grill PM over music classes
KUWAIT CITY (AFP) – A hardline Kuwaiti Islamist MP on Sunday threatened to call for the prime minister to face a grilling in parliament after the government made music classes compulsory in schools.

"We hold the prime minister responsible for this decision... We call for halting this, otherwise, we will use constitutional tools. This could lead to grilling the prime minister," Mohammad Hayef told reporters.

"We will not allow our schools to become centres for graduating dancers," said Hayef, who belongs to a group of ultra-conservative Salafi Islamists who consider, among other things, that music is prohibited under Islam.

Music has always been part of the curriculum in Kuwaiti schools despite opposition from hardline Islamists but the education ministry decided to include music as part of students' overall marks effective at the beginning of the school year in September.

"What is required now is for the ministry to revert to the old system, otherwise, we will submit a draft bill to ban music from schools," Hayef said.

He said the education ministry's decision was an attempt to Westernise Kuwaiti society.

Over the past few years, the Kuwaiti government has tightened the screws on musical concerts under pressure from Islamist and conservative MPs who have been the dominant force in parliament.

A few months ago, a concert by Egyptian pop singer Tamer Hosni was stopped by information ministry supervisors after a teenage girl went up to the stage and kissed him on the cheek.

Electromagnetic Railgun Air Defence Test Fired Successfully
Electromagnetic Systems division (GA-EMS) has successfully fired multiple rounds for the first time in a prototype of its new Blitzer electromagnetic railgun air defence prototype system.

These tests were performed at the US Army Dugway Proving Grounds under a contract with the Office of Naval Research. Testing is scheduled to continue through to the second quarter of next year and will culminate with the launch of tactically relevant aerodynamic rounds, GA-EMS says in a statement.

GA-EMS adds Blitzer will provide transformational, leap-ahead air defence capability against a number of threats for both naval and land-based applications.

With a muzzle velocity of more than twice that of conventional systems, Blitzer provides significant increases in standoff and lethality at lower cost without the need for propellant or high explosives.

#3  No military background, but I have to wonder how viable a system is that requires magawatts of juice in a combat situation where your infrastructure can be disrupted by a single hit?

Hope there's gonna be some purely mechanical backup.

#4  I can answer that without ever seeing the machine.
Military weapons carry their own Generators with them and are NOT dependent on ANYTHING else.

#5  Absolutely. The generator set and it's crew will be right there with the weapon along with the gun crew. Perhaps they should be armoured?

#8  The rail gun system had a breakthrough some years ago when the size of inductors and capacitors was radically reduced. In this case from so large they had to be carried on a railroad flatcar, to about the size of a suitcase.

The generator uses a flywheel to gradually accelerate a mass to high speed, then apply a load to generate a heck of a lot of current, measured in megajoules.

This energy goes through the capacitor and inductor as a bandpass circuit, and flows through a thin film conductor behind the projectile. The thin film instantly turns into a conductive plasma that violently expands, giving the projectile speeds of km/sec.

Thaksin arrives as adviser
[Straits Times] FORMER Thai premier Thaksin Shinawatra, a fugitive from the law in his own country, arrived in Phnom Penh on Tuesday to become a special economics adviser to the Cambodian Prime Minister.

He arrived on board his private jet at about 10am local time at an air force base next to the international airport where he was greeted by Prime Minister Hun Sen.

Thaksin was taken to a house provided for him in a luxury downtown enclave in the capital. He had dinner with Mr Hun Sen last night, and is scheduled to deliver a lecture to some 300 Cambodian civil servants on Thursday.

His visit further rattled the Bangkok government, coming just after he referred to Thailand's monarchy in an interview with the Times of London which was published online on Monday.

The Thai Cabinet decided to revoke a 2001 Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Cambodia on 26,000 sq km of overlapping maritime territory on Tuesday.

The decision, which needs to be ratified by Parliament, was part of a set of options aimed at putting pressure on Cambodia for what a Foreign Ministry official called 'blatant interference in Thailand's internal affairs'.

Anchor Lou Dobbs leaving CNN Immediately
CNN host Lou Dobbs shocked his viewers Wednesday when he announced that he would be leaving the network effective immediately. The longtime host of "Lou Dobbs Tonight" said on his show that it would be his last and that he was ready "to pursue new opportunities."

He said CNN had allowed him to be released from his contract, which was set for the end of 2011 and that he was considering a number of options.

"I will let you know when I set my course," he said.

The longest-running anchor on CNN's air, Dobbs was one of the nation's leading financial journalists before turning his program in a more opinionated direction. His persistent advocacy against illegal immigration angered many.

"I'm the last of the original anchors here on CNN and I'm proud to have had the privilege of helping to built the world's first news network."

CNN's average prime-time audience was third behind Fox and MSNBC during October, and it was even eclipsed by sister network HLN among younger viewers, according to the Nielsen Co.

#2  I suspect its a bell weather that the next big push for the triumvirate, knowing their Pork Out of 09 - Obamacare - Cap & Trade are such big sellers in middle America, is to get amnesty on the books before the next election to pack the voter rolls. They don't want Dobbs in the official state controlled media when it happens.

#4  Resigned two weeks after revealing this: Police Probe Shot Fired at Home of CNN's Lou Dobbs
A gunshot was fired at the New Jersey home of CNN's Lou Dobbs after a series of threatening phone calls earlier this month, the host told listeners on his nationally syndicated radio show.

Dobbs, a fervent proponent of U.S. border enforcement, told listeners of "The Lou Dobbs Show" on Monday that the incident is part of an ongoing assault against anyone who opposes amnesty or leniency toward illegal immigrants.

"They've created an atmosphere and they've been unrelenting in their propaganda," Dobbs said in reference to pro-immigration groups like the League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC), the National Council of La Raza and America's Voice. "Three weeks ago this morning, a shot was fired at my house where I live. My wife was standing out and that followed weeks and weeks of threatening phone calls."
