Ship abandoned in Red Sea faces unknown fate – sources
[IsraelTimes] A cargo ship abandoned four days ago in the Gulf of Aden after it was hit by missiles fired by Yemen’s Houthis is still floating despite taking in water, and could be towed to nearby Djibouti, industry sources say.

Shipping risks have escalated due to repeated drone and missile strikes in the Red Sea and Bab el-Mandeb Strait by the Iran-aligned Houthis since November. US and British forces have responded with several strikes on Houthi facilities but have so far failed to halt the attacks.

The crew of the Belize-flagged Rubymar abandoned the vessel after it was hit on Sunday, and were rescued by another commercial ship.

The vessel was taking in water and its operators were exploring options, the vessel’s maritime security company LSS-SAPU told Reuters on Monday. The vessel’s UK registered company and Lebanese-based ship manager could not be located for further comment.

A maritime advisory warned ships in the area to avoid the abandoned vessel.

A US defense official said on Tuesday that the vessel had not sunk.

Two shipping and insurance sources said towing the vessel to Djibouti appeared to be the best course of action.

“Djibouti is the only immediate option where some repairs or recovery would be feasible,” one of the sources says. “It is too risky for a ship in that condition to be towed too far or in more open waters.”

The vessel last reported its position over two days ago, and was headed to the Bulgarian port of Varna, according to data from ship tracking and maritime analytics provider MarineTraffic.

Britain
London High Court rejects petition to suspend British arms exports to Israel
[IsraelTimes] The London High Court rejected a petition to suspend British arms exports to Israel, the lawyers for the plaintiffs say.

A coalition of legal advocacy groups had asked the High Court in January to expedite a judicial review of the UK government’s decision to keep selling military parts and arms to Israel.

Britain’s strategic licensing criteria state that weapons should not be exported when there is a clear risk they could be used in international humanitarian law violations.

The court claimants, led by Palestinian rights group Al-Haq and including the Global Legal Action Network, argued that the government was ignoring its own rules in the Gaza conflict.

But the court ruled against the measure, the lawyers say in a statement to AFP, adding that they would appeal the decision.

Jewish UK parents receive child’s birth certificate torn, with ‘Israel’ scribbled out
[IsraelTimes] ’Like we’re in 1930s Germany,’ says father, as Britannia sees sharp uptick in antisemitism; home secretary promises incident will be investigated

UK Home Secretary James Cleverly promised "appropriate action" Monday after a London Jewish couple received their six-month-old daughter’s birth certificate partially ripped with the word "Israel," the father’s birthplace, blotted out.

"Two weeks ago, a member of the public sent off a passport application to [the UK Home Office] for his six-month-old baby girl. Today, the birth certificate was returned ripped with the word ’Israel’ scribbled out," wrote the Anglo-Jewish organization Campaign Against Antisemitism (CAA) in an X post Monday, with a picture of the defaced document. "We are asking the Home Office to investigate how this happened. The Home Office has responsibility for law enforcement and the security of the Jewish community. "

Cleverly replied to the post two hours later, saying that "I have asked my officials to investigate this urgently and will see that appropriate action is taken." Minister of Security Tom Tugendhat seconded Cleverly an hour later in a separate exchange on the social media platform.

The incident comes amid a worrying rise in British antisemitism following Hamas

war. "Confidence in the authorities among British Jews is at painfully low levels and must be restored," a CAA spokesperson said in a statement.

Israel, 32, an engineer father of three from Edgware in north London who preferred not to disclose his surname, told the Daily Mail that his wife Dorin, 29, had opened the envelope containing their baby Ronnie’s birth certificate, and was aghast to discover the name of the Jewish state scribbled over in pen, with the document itself partially torn, rendering it invalid.

According to the image posted by the CAA, the entry for the mother’s birthplace, which is also Israel, was left intact. Since personal names were redacted in the published image, it is unclear if the father’s name, Israel, was vandalized as well.

Antisemitism in Britannia has surged since the start of Israel’s war on Hamas. On Thursday, the Community Security Trust, an Anglo-Jewish security advisory body, published a report that said the number of antisemitic incidents in the UK in 2023 had more than doubled since 2022. Speaking in the House of Commons Monday, Policing Minister Chris Philip called the report "deeply disturbing reading."

"The record total of antisemitic hate in 2023 is due entirely to the surge in incidents following the 7 October Hamas terrorist attack on Israel, and the scale of the increase is unprecedented," the CST said in a statement Thursday.

Palestinian refugees are offered to work in the education sector in Chechnya
Direct Translation via Google Translate. Edited.
[KavkazUzel] Teachers from Palestine, after retraining and advanced training, will begin working in Chechen educational institutions, the Minister of Education of the Republic announced.
A good use of existing skills — though they’ll need to be closely supervised for a bit to ensure they don’t share Hamas/Muslim Brotherhood ideas.
The "Caucasian Knot" reported that by January 29, Chechnya had accepted 206 refugees from Palestine, local media reported on the employment of 30 of them. Most of the refugees got jobs in medical institutions, some were settled in the Blue Key camp, where displaced people from Palestine live. In a video published by the head of the Ministry of Press of Chechnya, Akhmed Dudayev, some refugees are teaching classes in school classes. At the same time, economists interviewed by the Caucasian Knot noted that the promoted employment of 30 refugees from Palestine will not affect the labor market of Chechnya. Chechnya provides assistance to refugees on the instructions of the Kremlin, the Caucasus expert emphasized.

According to official data, the unemployment rate in Chechnya has decreased slightly. Thus, according to Rosstat, the unemployment rate in the republic in 2023 was 10.6%, according to Chechenstat, for the same period - 7.9%. The data also differed in 2022. According to Rosstat, there were 11% unemployed in Chechnya, according to Chechenstat - 8.0%.

Representatives of educational organizations and the education department of the Grozny mayor's office and the Deputy Minister of Education and Science of Chechnya Akhmed Usmanov visited the meeting with Palestinian refugees in the Blue Key camp today; they conducted an interview with the displaced, said the Minister of Education of the Republic Khozh-Baudi Daaev.

“The Palestinians spoke about the skills and specialties that they possess and which they are ready to use when getting a job in the relevant professions. In particular, attention was drawn to professions that can be used in the education system of the region - teachers of English and Arabic, teachers of additional education etc. Educational organizations have been identified locally where refugees will be employed. At the beginning of the new school year, their work in the education system will begin,” the minister wrote in his Telegram channel.

One of the refugees said in the video attached to the publication that she received a profession as an English translator and would like to work as a teacher.

Let us recall that the Chechen authorities announced their intention to build a residential complex with 35 apartments for refugees from Palestine. Six groups  for studying the Russian language were organized for children and adults, and a group of 14 schoolchildren began studying the Russian language and mathematics at a school in the village of Avtury.
It sounds like the Chechens are doing this right. Let us hope so, for all involved.
Earlier, the head of the Ministry of Nationalities of Chechnya, Akhmed Dudayev, at a meeting with refugees, said that they should maintain cleanliness and be more organized, and they should not rush the Chechen authorities to solve their problems. Dudayev’s reproaches to the guests  contradict the Chechen traditions  of hospitality, Caucasus experts and human rights activists noted.

Japanese crime boss charged by US prosecutors in conspiracy to traffic nuclear material to Iran
[FoxNews] Ebisawa is scheduled to be arraigned Thursday in federal court in Manhattan

U.S. prosecutors have charged a Japanese mob leader with conspiring to traffic nuclear material from Southeast Asia to Iran.

Prosecutors say Yakuza leader Takeshi Ebisawa showed samples of nuclear materials to an undercover DEA agent posing as a narcotics and weapons trafficker with links to Iran.

The nuclear material had been smuggled from Myanmar to Thailand, prosecutors said. The material was later seized and samples were found to contain uranium and weapons-grade plutonium.

DEA Administrator Anne Milgram said Ebisawa and his cohorts trafficked in drugs, weapons, and nuclear material "fully expecting that Iran would use it for nuclear weapons"

"This is an extraordinary example of the depravity of drug traffickers who operate with total disregard for human life," Milgram said.

The nuclear material came from an unidentified leader of an "ethnic insurgent group" in Myanmar who had been mining uranium in the country, according to prosecutors.
That’s much more like real work than insurgent groups are generally interested in...
. Ebisawa had proposed that the leader sell uranium through him to fund a weapons purchase from an Iranian general, court documents allege.

Prosecutors said the insurgent leader provided samples, which a U.S. federal lab found contained uranium, thorium and plutonium. The "the isotope composition of the plutonium" was found to be weapons-grade, meaning enough of it would be suitable for use in a nuclear weapon.

Ebisawa, 60, was among four people who were arrested in April 2022 in Manhattan during a DEA sting operation. He has been jailed awaiting trial and is among two defendants named in a superseding indictment. Ebisawa is charged with the international trafficking of nuclear materials, conspiracy to commit that crime, and several other counts.

‘We should kill them all…everybody in Hamas’: GOP lawmaker tells pro-Palestinian activist
Perhaps that's what the LosAngeles weasel was going on about yesterday.
[IsraelTimes] Republican Rep. Andy Ogles
...representing somewhere in Tennessee...
tells a pro-Palestinian activist, “We should kill them all. Does that make you feel better? Everybody in Hamas.”
A man of strong opinions, and a willingness to match overbroad, deliberately shocking statements with more of the same. Perhaps it’s just as well he has no power in Israel...
He makes the remark after being confronted on Capitol Hill by the activist who told the Tennessee lawmaker that her “tax payer dollars are going to bomb those kids [in Gaza].”

Ogles was one of several Republican representatives who introduced legislation that would prohibit the US from accepting potential Palestinian refugees displaced by the war in Gaza.

#4  There is an old saying - some people just need killing. It's sort of a twist of 'do on to others what others have done on to you'. After what the SS did to Canadian POWs at Normandy, very few were subsequently taken prisoner by the Canadians. After what the SS did to American POWs at the Bulge, very few were taken prisoner by the Americans.

US opposes call at World Court for Israel to immediately withdraw from West Bank, East Jerusalem
[IsraelTimes] The United States calls on the International Court of Justice not to issue an advisory opinion that Israel is legally required to immediately withdraw from the West Bank and East Jerusalem, insisting, like Israel, that the conflict must be resolved within "the established framework" for doing so.

The US is one of the only countries to have expressed opposition to the request of the Paleostinian Authority and numerous other countries in the current hearings that the court rule Israel’s "military occupation" of the West Bank illegal and order Israel to take immediate steps to end it, such as the dismantlement of settlements.

"The established framework for achieving a comprehensive and enduring peace is anchored in UNSC resolutions 242 and 338. At their core these and subsequent resolutions call for the application of two inter-dependent and inseparable requirements for a just and lasting peace," says US representative Richard Visek in the ICJ, a legal adviser in the US State Department.

"One is the withdrawal of all forces from occupied territory, the other is peace and security for states in the Middle East, through the acknowledgement of the illusory sovereignty, territorial integrity, and political independence of every state in the area.

"In identifying these inter-dependent requirements, the Security Council decided that the withdrawal from Israeli forces relies on and is bound together with the termination of belligerency."

Visek argues that the court "should not find that Israel is legally obligated to immediately and unconditionally withdraw from occupied territory," and says the court can instead deal with the questions before it "within the established framework based on the land for peace principle."

Eurovision organizers reject Israel song entry as too political over Oct. 7 lyrics – report
[IsraelTimes] Eurovision organizers are reportedly pushing back against the song Israel is hoping to send to the contest later this year, rejecting its lyrics as too political.

While officially the song has yet to be released, Israel Hayom reported earlier this week that the song slated to be performed by Eden Golan in Malmo in May is titled “October Rain” and is expected to reference Hamas’s October 7 massacre in southern Israel.

Ynet reports today that the EBU believes the song is too political, as the contest’s official rules bar any political statements during the competition.

A spokeswoman for the Kan public broadcaster tells The Times of Israel only that the TV station “is involved in dialogue with the EBU in regards to the song that will represent Israel at the Eurovision.” The song was slated to be officially revealed during a TV broadcast early next month.

While some activists have issued calls to bar Israel from the Eurovision this year over the ongoing war, the EBU has continued to maintain that the country will be allowed to participate.

‘Does the UN hold my son,’ asks mother after footage shows UNRWA worker dragging son into jeep on Oct. 7

"Does the UN hold my son?" asks Ayelet Samerano, Jonathan’s mother. "Do they know where he is? Bring him back to me — are there any other hostages held by UN employees? Even as we’re speaking right now? Where is my son?"

Samerano was at the Nova desert rave on October 7 and had escaped to Kibbutz Be’eri when he was killed and then his body taken hostage.

Naami is implicated in the kidnapping of Samerano, says Shelly Aviv Yeini, head of the forum’s legal team.

"Hostage-taking is a war crime," says Yeini, adding that the forum demands a comprehensive investigation into the allegations.

Daniel Shek, head of diplomacy at the forum, says that in his 30-year diplomatic career, he has seen UNRWA "do amazing humanitarian things," but there have always been issues of misconduct in the UN organization.

"One video like this will erase all the good you’ve done," says Shek, speaking of UNRWA, "and should erase all the good you’ve done."

Shek adds that it’s not the role of the forum to inspect the accounts of UNRWA and talk about their corruption and management, but says the agency should "clean your house or move out."

"Those are the two options," Shek continues. "I cannot believe that people like this man who kidnapped Yonatan — and we know there are others. I cannot imagine there weren’t any red flags before he did something like that," he says.

Knesset adopts Netanyahu motion against unilateral Palestinian state recognition, with over 80% voting in favor
[IsraelTimes] The Knesset votes to back Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s declaration opposing the "unilateral" creation of Paleostinian state, following growing international calls for the revival of efforts to reach a two-state solution to the decades-long conflict.

Netanyahu’s Likud party says in a statement that 99 of 120 politicians voted to support the declaration passed earlier this week by the cabinet.

The Israeli position also says that any permanent accord with the Paleostinians would have to be reached through direct negotiations between the sides, and not by international dictates.
Use dictate in a sentence.
Opposition Leader Yair Lapid, who voted for the resolution, tells politicians that despite his support he does not believe that there was any intent on the American side to unilaterally recognize a Paleostinian state.

Police: Terrorist in Ra’anana attack initially tried to target IDF’s Arabic spokesman
[IsraelTimes] One of the perpetrators of deadly ramming spree last month first sought to attack well-known figure Lt. Col. Avichay Adraee after spotting him at restaurant, officials say

One of the two Paleostinian snuffies who carried out a deadly car-ramming spree in the central city of Ra’anana last month initially sought to target a senior officer in the IDF Spokesperson Unit, police said Wednesday.

Police said that their investigation into the January 15 attack revealed that months before the attack, one of the perpetrators, both of whom were working in Ra’anana illegally, spotted an IDF official sitting at a restaurant. The senior officer was identified as Lt. Col. Avichay Adraee, the IDF’s Arabic-language front man, who is well known in the Arab world, often appearing in Arabic-language press to lay out Israeli positions and defend Israeli military actions.

Ahmed Zidat, 25, considered trying to attack Adraee then and there, but was unarmed. He returned to the restaurant armed with a knife in the following days and weeks and would walk around the neighborhood searching for Adraee, but did not see him again.

The two snuffies who perpetrated the ramming attack were identified as Ahmed Zidat and Mahmoud Zidat, 44, both residents of the southern West Bank town of Bani Naim who, according to the Shin Bet, had been previously blacklisted for entering Israel illegally numerous times.

During the attack, the two seized three vehicles and rammed pedestrians in several locations in the city, killing an elderly woman and wounding at least 17 others.

According to the findings of the investigation, the two perpetrators worked at a car wash in Ra’anana, and it was from there that they stole two vehicles used in the attack.

The first terrorist ran over a pedestrian with one stolen car before abandoning it and stealing the car of a woman who had been attempting to escape him, police said of the investigation’s findings. The terrorist rammed into several more people as he made his escape to a hiding place near his workplace, where he was eventually caught and arrested.

At the same time, the second terrorist ran over a group of citizens at a bus stop and killed one of them — 79-year-old Edna Bluestein — before attempting to flee the scene, police said.

The pair were arrested following the attack and indictments are expected to be filed against them in the coming days.

Hebrew media reports indicated one of the suspects told the Shin Bet that when the war in Gazoo

Military officials say the IDF aims to release reservists to help bounce back Israel’s economy and give them a break before they are likely called up again, as the fighting in Gaza is expected to last all year, and there are fears of an escalation in the north amid daily attacks by Hezbollah.

Meanwhile,
...back at the Alamo, Davy was counting their remaining cannon balls and not liking the results...
the IDF’s main offensive in Khan Younis is close to being wrapped up, although no exact date for its end has been decided, according to military officials.

The Hamas battalions in the area have been dismantled, but the IDF is expected to continue to operate in the area to reach several smaller objectives.

US official: Highly unlikely that IDF will launch Rafah offensive before Ramadan begins
Y’all keep thinking that.
[IsraelTimes] It is highly unlikely that Israel will launch its major planned military operation in the southern Gazoo

city of Rafah before the Moslem holy month of Ramadan, which begins around March 10, a senior US official tells The Times of Israel.

The IDF is still finishing up major operations in Khan Younis, north of Rafah, and has not finalized its plan to ensure that the million-plus Paleostinians currently sheltering in the latter city will be protected once the Israeli operation against Hamas
...a regional Iranian catspaw,...
’s remaining battalions there begins, the US official says.

Any plan requiring the evacuation of that many Paleostinian civilians and the establishment of new humanitarian mechanisms to support them will take weeks to implement, the US official speculates.

War cabinet minister Benny Gantz appeared to confirm that timeline earlier this week, saying that Israel will operate in Rafah if the hostages aren’t returned by Ramadan.

US President Joe The Big Guy Biden
...46th president of the U.S. Old, boring, a plagiarist, fond of hair sniffing and grabbing the protruding parts of women, and not whatcha call brilliant... or is that an act?...
has stressed that such a plan is necessary before Israel launches any major offensive in Rafah and indicated Friday that the operation should not commence while hostage negotiations are ongoing.

An Israeli official tells The Times of Israel that the IDF plans to evacuate the civilians in Rafah to an area between Khan Younis and Wadi Gaza, which bisects the Strip.

The US official indicates that failure to start the Rafah operation before Ramadan may force Israel to wait until after the holy month is over to begin the offensive.

The Biden administration is working to secure a hostage deal before Ramadan begins, a second US official told The Times of Israel earlier this month, adding that Washington wants to use the humanitarian pause secured by the hostage deal to negotiate a more permanent ceasefire.

as part of its plan to maintain security control over the Paleostinian enclave at the end of the war against Hamas
...a regional Iranian catspaw,...
, The Wall Street Journal reports.

According to the report, the new gravel road is being expanded upon some five miles from the Israeli border and stretches from east to west, as the army already has control over the Strip’s north-south roads.
That's not gravel, that's Gaza's finest rubble
The road will allow the military to move securely through the strip and its construction as Israel prepares for the day after the war, when the ruling Hamas terror group will no longer be in power and the majority of IDF troops will have withdrawn, the report says.

Speaking to the WSJ, retired IDF colonel Miri Eisin says the road is intended to be "long-term temporary" and will be in use at least until the end of 2024.

One month after they entered Gaza, Qatar says Hamas has begun giving meds to hostages, France confirms - both without proof
[IsraelTimes] Announcement from Doha offers no explanation for delay or any proof the hostages received medicines

and that it has begun delivering them to the abductees, Doha announced on Tuesday, over one month after the medical shipment entered the enclave.

"The State of Qatar has received confirmation from the Islamic Resistance® Movement [Hamas] regarding the receipt of a shipment of medicines and the commencement of their delivery to beneficiaries among the hostages in the Gaza Strip, in implementation of an agreement between Hamas and Israel, mediated by Qatar in cooperation with La Belle France last month," said a statement from Qatari foreign ministry front man Majed al-Ansari, which offered no explanation for the apparent delay, nor any proof that the hostages had received the medications.

On January 16, Qatar announced that it had successfully brokered an agreement between Israel and Hamas that would see medications delivered to specific hostages in need, as well as medical supplies for Gazook civilians.

On January 17, Qatari and Hamas authorities announced that the medications had entered Gaza. Since then, there has been no confirmation that any of the hostages had received the medications.

Tuesday’s announcement from Qatar appeared to be the closest thing yet to such a confirmation.

An Arab diplomat familiar with the negotiations told The Times of Israel earlier this month that the presentation of such proof wasn’t part of the Qatar-mediated agreement and is unlikely to come. However,
there is a theory which states that if ever anybody discovers exactly what the Universe is for and why it is here, it will instantly disappear and be replaced by something even more bizarre and inexplicable. There is another theory which states that this has already happened...
they claimed Hamas wants to keep the hostages alive, as they are worth more to the terror group than if they are dead. Accordingly, it has an interest in ensuring that the hostages receive the medicine, the diplomat said.

Moreover, they said that claims from the families of specific hostages that their loved ones had not received their medications were likely due to the fact that they were not on the list of the several dozen hostages slated to receive meds.

Last week, the IDF said its troops uncovered medications with the names of hostages on them during operations at Nasser Hospital in southern Gaza’s Khan Younis, though those reportedly were from a separate shipment that was snuck into Gaza in November, as part of an independent initiative by several hostage families.

While Israeli officials have publicly demanded proof that the hostages received the medications, privately they’ve acknowledged that Jerusalem will have no choice but to simply trust the word of Qatar that they’ve indeed been received.

Responding to Qatar’s announcement, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office issued a statement claiming that it was the "direct result" of the premier’s insistence that Israel receive proof that the meds given reached the abductees. "Israel will examine the credibility of the announcement and will continue to work for the wellbeing of our hostages."

Doha has pushed back aggressively against Netanyahu’s calls for it to pressure Hamas, claiming they are an attempt to prolong the war.

Two hundred and fifty-three hostages were taken on October 7, when Hamas led a devastating attack on southern Israel, killing some 1,200 people and committing wholesale atrocities. Over half the hostages, 134, remain in captivity, and efforts to free them have yet to bear fruit.

Many of the hostages, including a number of elderly men, suffer from chronic conditions, making the delivery of medication essential. Most of the elderly hostages were among the 109 released during a truce in late November.

Since their kidnapping, the International Committee of the Red Thingy has failed to coax Hamas into allowing their medics to visit the hostages in order to examine their wellbeing.

The only proof of life that Israel has received from a handful of the hostages has been from propaganda videos periodically released by Hamas in which the abductees are seen urging Netanyahu’s government to do more to secure their release.

Hamas planned Ashkelon jail raid to free Palestinian prisoners on October 7 – report
[IsraelTimes] Terrorists headed to Shikma Prison with detailed plan but got lost on the way for ‘unknown reason,’ ended up in Sderot, according to London-based Arabic paper

border and went north on October 7 was headed for the facility housing hundreds of Paleostinians convicted of terror and other security offenses.

However,
Switzerland makes more than cheese...
the mission failed when the group deviated from its path for an "unknown technical reason," according to the report, which could not be verified.

The report included a map illustrating the cell’s route. After bursting through the Erez crossing, the group of nearly two dozen holy warriors traveled north to Yad Mordechai, but after getting in a firefight and killing several people, the cell seemingly lost its way. Turning west and then south, the group reached Netiv Ha’asara, on the border with Gaza, and eventually ended up in Sderot, where its members continued to massacre people and battle Israeli forces.

The 23 terrorists, part of Hamas’s elite Nukhba force, were among the thousands of attackers who streamed into southern Israel on October 7, by land, air and sea, killing some 1,200 people and kidnapping 253 to Gaza, amid horrific acts of brutality and sexual assault.

It is believed that 130 hostages kidnapped by Hamas that day remain in Gaza, not all of them alive.

The IDF says it killed some 1,000 holy warriors inside Israel on October 7 as security forces responded to the devastating shock attack.

According to the report, the group had prepared a detailed plan to assault the prison, including "attacking the main gate using bombs" in such a way that they hoped would cause a riot in the prison and help in liberating the prisoners.

Shikma is located some 13 kilometers from Gaza, southeast of Ashkelon. It has separate wings for security inmates serving time for terror-related offenses and criminal convicts. There are also sections for female prisoners, minors and inmates requiring enhanced protection.

The newspaper claimed that after reaching Sderot, the group was ordered to hold their ground in the city as long as possible, with some members holing up in a cop shoppe, where battles continued into October 8.

Meanwhile,
...back at the dirigible, the gondola was dangling by a single thread of rope.

Jack! Cynthia cried. I just realized I'm afraid of heights! I don't even like high heels!...

a separate cell that had infiltrated Kibbutz Zikim was ordered to try to reach the prison, but was killed by Israeli forces, Asharq al-Awsat reported.

Hamas has insisted that Israel release thousands of Paleostinian prisoners, including hundreds serving life sentences, in exchange for freeing hostages.

In January, Asharq al-Awsat reported that the first 70 holy warriors to breach the border on October 7 were selected from among hundreds of elite commandos from all over Gaza, and underwent training for a number of years, along with continuous testing to gauge their skills.

Report: IDF advancing pilot program in Gaza City that would see Palestinians not tied to PA or Hamas govern the area

City, Channel 12 reports without citing any sources.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has said Israel wants local Paleostinian community leaders who are not affiliated with either Hamas or the Paleostinian Authority to take over the governance of Gaza after the war.

Channel 12 says Zeitoun will serve as a pilot program for this effort, adding that IDF officials have already met with a group of unnamed Paleostinian community leaders who will be tasked with governing the area.

Analysts have expressed heavy skepticism of this effort, noting the likelihood that any Paleostinian community leaders seen openly and unilaterally cooperating with Israel will quickly be delegitimized and possibly find their lives at risk. They point to a similar effort that was advanced by the US after it invaded Iraq two decades ago only to backfire.

While many in the security establishment believe that the PA should be tasked with leading the governmental effort, the IDF is under direction from Netanyahu’s office not to formally draft any plans for post-war governance in Gaza that involve the PA and accordingly have been left with the framework that they’re currently trying to advance in Zeitoun, officials have told The Times of Israel.

Update at 12:55 p.m. ET: More.

Syria-Lebanon-Iran
Seven Azerbaijani citizens returned from Syria
Direct Translation via Google Translate. Edited.
[KavkazUzel] Two women and five children who were in camps in Syria have been returned to Azerbaijan, the Foreign Ministry reported.

As the "Caucasian Knot" wrote, Azerbaijan periodically organizes the return of its citizens from camps in Syria and Iraq. Thus, in October 2023, a woman and nine children were returned from Syrian camps, the Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry reported. In August of the same year, three women and 13 children who were held in a Syrian camp were also brought to Azerbaijan.

At least 120 women from Azerbaijan remain in Iraq, Turan agency columnist Tofig Turkel reported in June 2023. In November 2022, the Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry estimated the total number of its citizens repatriated from Syria and Iraq over the years at 409 people.

The Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry today announced the repatriation of seven Azerbaijani citizens from Syria. “As a result of phased and coordinated measures of the Azerbaijani government, on February 20, seven citizens of the Republic of Azerbaijan, namely five children and two women, who were kept in camps in Syria, were repatriated to the country,” the department said in a statement, translated into Russian by a correspondent "Caucasian Knot".

The Foreign Ministry noted that after establishing the location, identities and citizenship of these people, their transfer to Turkish territory was ensured. “Representatives of government agencies responsible for the repatriation of Azerbaijani citizens from Iraq and Syria were sent to Turkey, where medical and psychological examination of the repatriates was provided,” the press release notes.

According to the department, the Azerbaijani Embassy in Turkey provided those repatriated with certificates of return to Azerbaijan and air tickets. “At the next stage, it is planned to implement measures for social rehabilitation and reintegration of repatriates into society. The Government of the Republic of Azerbaijan will continue to take the necessary measures for the repatriation of Azerbaijani citizens who have become victims of armed conflict on the territory of foreign states,” the statement says.

In recent years, more than 450 people have been repatriated from Syria and Iraq to Azerbaijan, “and this process continues,” a representative of the interdepartmental working group on the repatriation of Azerbaijani citizens told the “Caucasian Knot” correspondent today.
