Afghanistan
Taliban Initiated 2,804 Attacks Post-Peace Deal: Official
[ToloNews] The Taliban
...Arabic for students...
has conducted an average of 55 attacks per day since the signing of the peace deal with the United States in Doha on February 29, according to figures provided by the Office of the National Security Council (ONSC) on Saturday.

The ONSC front man Javid Faisal at a presser said that the Taliban conducted 2,804 attacks from the beginning of March to April 19, adding the group "does not remain committed to the reconciliation process that will help the country to end decades of war."

The attacks, he said, left 789 civilians dead and maimed, and that "34 non-combatants were killed in Taliban attacks during the last week, and "62 others were maimed."

According to Faisal, "2,737 Taliban fighters" were killed and maimed during this period.

"Their terrorist attacks have increased and they are doing it against the will of the people and this will affect the grinding of the peace processor," Faisal said.

This comes as the Taliban recently shared documents seen by TOLOnews claiming that the US and its allies have "violated" the peace deal by targeting the group with attacks.

The ONSC front man said the Afghan forces are in "active defensive" mode in which "they are allowed to launch operations" if they find that the Taliban is planning to attack an area.

In the last 24 hours alone, the provinces of Sar-e-Pul
...a city and eponymous province in northern Afghanistan, population about 500,000. Demographically it is majority Tadjik and Uzbek. There are small Pashtun, Arab, and Hazara communities, of which the Hazaras mostly don't bother anyone...
, Ghazni, Balkh and Faryab witnessed festivities between government forces and the Taliban, "killing 26 civilians and security force members and wounding over 40 others," according to officials.

"We had eight people killed and nine maimed. Also, in Sozma Qala district, where Taliban conducted attacks, three people were killed and eight others maimed," said Abdul Qadir Ashna, the governor of Sar-e-Pul province.

A former Taliban commander, Sayed Akbar Agha, said the two sides should keep their end of the bargain in tbe peace deal.

"The Taliban say that Americans have not implemented their commitments," he said.

This comes as President Ghani last week on the eve of Ramadan appealed to the Taliban to enact a ceasefire, in light of the pandemic spreading across the country.

The Taliban responded by calling the appeal improbable and insincere considering the government's continued detention of thousands of Taliban prisoners--vulnerable to contracting COVID-19--and for causing other "hurdles" to be in the way of the grinding of the peace processor.

The increase in violence has led to a statement by NATO
...the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. A cautionary tale of cost-benefit analysis....
and its allies calling on the Taliban to reduce violence and agree on a humanitarian ceasefire.

US Ambassador to NATO Hutchisen said the US and its NATO allies have "unanimously approved a resolution calling on Afghan politicians to resolve their differences," and they also call on Taliban to "reduce violence."

The Organization of Islamic Cooperation also renewed its appeal to "Afghan leaders and parties to urgently reduce violence and work for lasting ceasefire."

Policeman Who Allegedly Killed Two Citizens In Mogadishu Arrested
[RADIOSHABELLE] Somali security forces have managed to arrest a soldier who allegedly killed two civilians on Friday evening in Mogadishu during curfew enforcement.

The soldier is identified as Hassan Aden Hassan is now in jug and he will be arraigned in court, according to the authorities.

The shooting took place at Juba intersection as police were trying to enforce a nighttime curfew imposed on the city to contain the spread of COVID-19.

Hundreds of people have marched through the capital’s streets on Saturday morning in protest of the murder of the civilians and called for justice.

The Somali government has imposed a curfew in Mogadishu, starting at 7:00 p.m. and urged residents to stay indoors during the hours of the curfew.

Saudi TV show for Ramadan sparks outrage with Hebrew opening monologue
Truly the world is full of unanticipated wonders.
[Jpost] A new Soddy Arabia
...a kingdom taking up the bulk of the Arabian peninsula. Its primary economic activity involves exporting oil and soaking Islamic rubes on the annual hajj pilgrimage. The country supports a large number of princes in whatcha might call princely splendor. When the oil runs out the rest of the world is going to kick sand in the Soddy national face...
n TV series sparked a storm of controversy among Gulf states as the opening monologue of the first episode was spoken in Hebrew, N12 has reported.

The series, Umm Haroun — meaning Mother of Aaron — which deals with relations between Moslems and Jews in 1940s Kuwait, premiered during Ramadan — the most sacred month in the Islamic calendar.

Terror victims' families to collect NIS 500 m. from Palestinian Authority
[JPost] The Jerusalem District Court has ordered that around NIS 500 million be collected from the Palestinian Authority in civil damages for a series of terror attacks carried out mostly during the Second Intifada (2000 to 2005).

Though the decision was handed down late Friday, it was announced by Shurat Hadin, which led the charge, on Sunday.

The Jerusalem District Court had ruled that the PA was liable for these damages back in July 2019. Since then, Shurat Hadin, working on behalf of eight victims' families and relating to 17 complaints, had to prove their damages.

PA and Fatah honor Munich Massacre terrorists in anniversary posts

In a Facebook post, Paleostinian Authority President and Fatah leader the ineffectual Mahmoud Abbas

The three Black September terrorist were later assassinated by the Israeli Mossad in Beirut in April 1973 due to their involvement in the Munich Massacre.

Similarly, both the PA and Fatah marked the 41st anniversary of the death of Hassan Ali Salameh, Black September’s commander of operations in Europa

US blocks Palestinian coronavirus relief over fear it may aid terrorism
Nahhhhhh. They would NEVER. Oh, who am I kidding?
[NY Post] No COVID cash for terrorists.

The United States Agency for International Development has moved to aggressively block the distribution of coronavirus relief funds to the entire Gaza strip over concerns the money could fall into the hands of Palestinian terrorist group Hamas.

"The Trump administration is not supporting assistance to Gaza," a senior administration official with knowledge of USAID plans told The Post. "There is a Hamas government in Gaza. They have indicated no interest in engaging with us, no interest in peace with Israel and in fact they continue — despite having coronavirus cases in Gaza — to fire rockets at the Israelis on a regular basis."

The issue of Gaza funding came to the fore internally after the United States pledged $5 million to help Palestinian relief services in their fight against the deadly pandemic.

"I’m very pleased the USA is providing $5M for Palestinian hospitals and households to meet immediate, life-saving needs in combating COVID-19. The USA, as the world’s top humanitarian aid donor, is committed to assisting the Palestinian people, & others worldwide, in this crisis," U.S. Ambassador to Israel David Friedman announced in an April 16 tweet.

The plan currently calls for USAID to distribute the funds entirely within the West Bank, ruled by the comparatively more moderate Palestinian Authority and its aging leading Mahmoud Abbas. The funds will be released to a contractor, who would then have discretion to divvy up the cash on the ground as they see fit.

Finding a trusted contractor to ensure the money flows exclusively to COVID-19 efforts instead of rockets and terror tunnels in Gaza has proved difficult. The leading contender for the job right now, Catholic Relief Services, has repeatedly expressed interest in distributing cash in the Hamas-controlled territory and has petitioned both the State Department and USAID to release funds previously awarded to them to spend in Gaza.

I'm very pleased the USA is providing $5M for Palestinian hospitals and households to meet immediate, life-saving needs in combating COVID-19. The USA, as the world’s top humanitarian aid donor, is committed to assisting the Palestinian people, & others worldwide, in this crisis.

— David M. Friedman (@USAmbIsrael) April 16, 2020

"Catholic Relief Services (CRS), along with other faith-based and U.S. private voluntary agencies, is desperately mobilizing to mitigate the potentially catastrophic impact of COVID-19 in Gaza," wrote CRS chief Sean Callahan in a March 20 missive to Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and USAID administrator Mark Andrew Green. "We are urgently requesting the support of USAID in these efforts. "

The Catholic Relief pitch to distribute funds has also raised eyebrows among staff at the U.S. Embassy in Jerusalem — who raised a number of possible concerns about how the relief organization would allocate funds.

"USAID should ask up front the entire list of ’local partners’ and ’key partners’ who will receive any U.S. taxpayer dollars so that USAID can do thorough and proper vetting of each ahead of time," embassy staff wrote.

Reps for CRS and the State Department did not respond to request for comment from The Post.

Lebanon PM blames currency crash on Central Bank governor
[EN.ANNAHAR] Leb
...an Iranian colony situated on the eastern Mediterranean, conveniently adjacent to Israel. Formerly inhabited by hardy Phoenecian traders, its official language is now Arabic, with the usual unpleasant side effects. The Leb civil war, between 1975 and 1990, lasted a little over 145 years and produced 120,000 fatalities. The average length of a ceasefire was measured in seconds. The Lebs maintain a precarious sectarian balance among Shiites, Sunnis, and about a dozeen flavors of Christians. It is the home of Hezbollah, which periodically starts a war with the Zionist Entity, gets Beirut pounded to rubble, and then declares victory and has a parade. The Lebs have the curious habit of periodically murdering their heads of state or prime ministers...
’s prime minister said Friday he is holding the country’s Central Bank governor responsible for the downward spiral of the national currency, accusing him of pursuing "opaque" policies that sent the pound crashing against the dollar.

The government has agreed with Lebanon’s president to hire an independent international auditing company to review the Central Bank’s performance, Prime Minister Hassan Diab said. The move, and the premier’s speech, were an indication of a widening rift with the country’s longtime chief financial decision-maker, Gov. Riad Salameh.

Diab urged Salameh to speak openly to the public about the financial crisis, hinting that the governor has intentionally engineered the crash of the pound.

The Lebanese pound has been on a downward trajectory for weeks amid a worsening liquidity crunch and an economic slump. But it appeared to be in a free fall over the last few days, selling as low as 3,800 pounds to the dollar, down from a fixed peg of 1,500 pounds to the dollar in place for 30 years.
