Iran on the verge of severe financial crisis: intelligence report

#1  The Obama administration would like that because it would give the impression that his sanctions policy on Iran has been "successful" just prior to the election.

With that in mind, this report is probably fake.

#5  agree with #3. what oil sanctions??? are we to believe that Iran cannot sell its oil - esp. if the price is discounted? I am highly skeptical.

Afghanistan
Taliban Rages Over U.S. Decision on Terrorist Group
Washington has formally branded the Haqqani network a foreign terrorist organization for its attacks against American and NATO forces and for its role in the Taliban superstructure in Afghanistan. The Taliban’s response? Angry, swift and deadly.

The U.S. decision on the Haqqani group was announced Friday by Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton, and it was seconded by the Defense Department.

The Taliban responded with a suicide attack on Saturday that killed at least eight Afghan civilians near NATO headquarters in central Kabul.

The Taliban spokesman Zabiullah Mujahid said the target had been a C.I.A. safe house and claimed that “five top-level U.S. agents” had been killed. He also rejected a statement by the police in Kabul that the bomber, wearing a suicide vest, had been a young boy.

“There is absolutely no truth in what the Kabul slave administration says about this effective operation by a teenage martyr attacker as he was about 28 year old,” Mr. Mujahid said.

Caribbean-Latin America
Colombia rejects FARC truce call
[Bangla Daily Star] Colombian President Juan Manuel Santos rejected a proposal on Thursday by leftist FARC rebels for a bilateral ceasefire during talks next month aimed at bringing an end to half a century of war.

The call for both sides to put down their weapons while talks are under way in Norway came earlier from leaders of the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia
FARC or FARC-EP, is either a Marxist-Leninist revolutionary guerrilla organization or a narco mob based in Colombia. It claims to represent the rural poor in a struggle against Colombia's wealthier classes, and opposes United States influence in Colombia, neo-imperialism, monopolization of natural resources by multinational corporations, and the usual raft of complaints. It funds itself principally through ransom kidnappings, taxation of the drug trade, extortion, shakedowns, and donations. It has lately begun calling itself Bolivarian and is greatly admired by Venezuela's President-for-Life Chavez, who seemingly fantasizes about living in the woods and kidnapping people himself. He provides FARC with safe areas along the border.
at a news conference in Havana.

The proposal and its rejection could complicate the process from the start as Santos is adamant that Colombian military operations would continue across "every centimetre" of the Andean nation.

"I have asked that military operations be intensified, that there will be no ceasefire of any kind," Santos said during an address at a military base in Tolemaida, close to the capital.

"We won't cede anything at all until we reach the final agreement," he added. "That should be very clear."

At its news conference, the FARC named two negotiators who will sit with government representatives in Oslo and later in Cuba to try to end a war that has left tens of thousands dead since it began in 1964.

Caucasus/Russia/Central Asia
Russian troops are prepared for combat operations in the North Caucasus
“If attacks on troops in the Caucasus will continue, a military connect to destroy criminal groups and strongly resisted the rebels.” The possible participation of the military in maintaining security throughout the country, to a certain extent indicative and published yesterday on the Kremlin website, the presidential decree on approval of the national anti-terrorist Committee positions and amending the Decree of the President of the Russian Federation of February 15, 2006, № 116 on measures to counter terrorism and to the Federal operational staff on posts approved by the Decree “. According to the document, the national anti-terrorist Committee posts included Minister of defence and Chief of the General staff.

The source did not specify which units of defense can be brought to military operations in the Northern Caucasus. But, judging by the experience of the past years, most likely talking about the SWAT units of the Main Intelligence Directorate (Gru) Genshtaba, most trained professionally, because mostly they are manned by-by. The same opinion and Lieutenant-General Yuri Netkačev, who commanded the army in southern Russia and the Deputy Commander of Russian forces in the Transcaucasus organized in parts of military training, including training of army special forces. “The army is, of course, is intended to reflect the predominantly external aggression. However, the activity of militants, especially in Dagestan, is growing, and it is quite possible and even desirable to their destruction, together with law enforcement agencies and special services have been prepared for such actions, the army, the expert believes.

As is well known, since August 1999, when troops of warlords Shamil Basayev and Khattab invaded Dagestan, the army leadership has implemented the joint leadership of troops (OGV) to conduct counter-terrorist operations in the North Caucasus region. The army performed core functions to destroy militants.

India-Pakistan
Kamra base attack: Three out of nine militants identified
[Dawn] Air force authorities informed the Parliamentary Committee on National Security (PCNS) that three cut-throats involved in the Kamra airbase attack had been identified and that they were residents of the Punjab province, DawnNews reported.

The committee's session was held at the Parliament House here on Friday and was presided over by Raza Rabbani.

Briefing the committee members, air force authorities said that three out of the nine cut-throats who had attacked the Minhas airbase in Kamra had been identified and that they were residents of Punjab. One of the three hails from Sialkot.

In August, cut-throats armed with rocket-propelled grenades and automatic weapons had carried out a brazen attack under cover of darkness on the Minhas base of the Pakistain Air Force at Kamra.

The Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistain (TTP) grabbed credit for the assault.

At the time, the air force front man said that eight cut-throats had been killed during the crossfire within the boundary walls of the airbase and one went kaboom!" within the outer perimeters of the base where he had reportedly been hiding.

Pakistain has experienced numerous retaliatory attacks launched by bad turban organizations that are active in the northwestern part of the country because of its role as a strategic ally in the war in Afghanistan.

Attacks by banned outfits such as TTP and Lashkar-e-Jhangvi

Israel-Palestine-Jordan
Furious Palestinians turn against their own
THE Arab Spring appears to have reached the Palestinian territories, with growing protests directed at the high cost of living.

But, as with other protests in the Arab world over the past two years, the protests are broadening.

Israel's military occupation of the West Bank and the performance of the Palestinian Authority are also being targeted.

While most demonstrations in recent weeks have been peaceful, on Saturday night one took on a more destructive tone.

At a major intersection in Ramallah, near Jerusalem, youths blocked roads with rocks and set fire to overturned garbage bins, mattresses and piles of wood.

The demonstration was outside the al-Amari refugee camp. Protests were also held over the weekend in Hebron and Nablus.

The trigger for the demonstrations has been the inability of the PA to pay full salaries to its 150,000 employees this month.

A major target of the protests is PA Prime Minister Salam Fayyad, who is more popular among Western leaders than among many of his people. Mr Fayyad, a trusted point of contact for leaders such as the US Secretary of State, Hillary Clinton, is blamed for cutbacks to entitlements and rising prices.

The former economist with the World Bank and International Monetary Fund has overseen a crackdown on inefficiencies and corruption in the PA. He has been praised by the IMF for making changes to the Palestinian economy, just as criticism of him has grown among Palestinians.

Yesterday, PA President Mahmoud Abbas held a press conference to try to quell the growing unrest by blaming a range of other entities. He panned Israel for its occupation of the West Ban

Israel could send Iran ‘back to the stone age’ with electromagnetic bomb

#1  ....The thought just occurred to me - of ALL the people in the world who would have a valid military reason to come up with a practical (as opposed to improvised) EMP device, it would be the Israelis. Think about it for a second - they face tightly controlled, centralized dictatorships. If those dictatorships lost their electronics - which aren't hardened to anything like our standards - all they command is what's within the sound of their voices...

#2  Unfortunately, EMP bombs area of affect do not respect national borders. They'd better be very, very careful where they set such a thing off or the neighbors would be REALLY upset.

And I think some of Iran's neighbors have the ability to do something about it.

#4  Yes, effect varys with boom size, altitude and distance. Most efficient use looks to be by a one bomb nation against a no-bomb nation. Use against a real nuke power gets you glassed, since real nuke powers tend to keep all their goodies in farraday cages.

#6  Indeed Besoerker. I have to say that if Israel manages to execute a brilliant strategic plan in the middle of this mess ... then they all deserve medals. I'm afraid we're going to see something that falls short of the mark. They need a lot more than just "a plan".

#8  Chances are that if you were to look inside the war planning room in Israel ... the best plan has been set aside. Either that, or it has been mangled beyond recognition by too many changes.

Why ... because too many cooks spoil the broth.

So while the rest of the world ponders ...
Will Israel hit Iran first?
Will Iran hit Israel first?

#10  Just offhand, what do the Tea Leaves as per an IRAN ATTACK AGZ ISRAEL, not the other way around, iff one believes that Rising Iran is feeling the US-led containment heat in the Persian Gulf + Middle East like Rising China vee the US = US-Allies in East Asia???

As a major Oil State, strategic defensive-minded Iran should be able to handle or pull through the worst possible UN Sanctions, BUT YA NEVER KNOW WHEN "ENOUGH IS ENOUGH - TIME FOR ACTION/WAR" FOR IRAN???

Lest we ferfit, among other IMO Islamist Iran is testing the popular premises of post-Cold War "Globalism", i.e. is it "real change" from the Western = Zionist-Crusader Imperialism of the past, or is it just Sameo Sameo/Status Quo wid a new cover story. WILL THE PREDOMINAN JUDEO-CHRISTIAN US-WEST WILLINGLY GIVE UP + SHARE POWER + AUTHORITY WID WORLD NON-JUDEOCHRISTIANS, OR IS "GLOBALISM" JUST SO MUCH FAKE HYPE???

* IRAN = iff Jewish Israel + Other can have Nuclear Weapons, etc. so can Muslims + Muslim Nations; + iff the Sunni KSA can't or won't do it, SHIA IRAN WILL.

MILF deploys 'friendly forces' in Maguindanao
Muslim rebels currently in peace talks with the government are trying to avoid battles with their former allies behind several attacks in the past few weeks in Mindanao. They have deployed "friendly forces" in areas targeted by the Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom Movement (BIFM), according to Ghadzali Jaafar, vice chairman for political affairs of the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF). BIFM is a breakaway group from the MILF.

Jaafar said that members of the MILF's National Guard unit, aka Task Force Etihad, are now in the province of Maguindanao to help ease tensions which could lead to further fighting with the BIFM and widespread violence in Mindanao.

Jaafar said, “We began deploying after they promised us that they will not make any moves that will destroy the unity of the people."

A month ago, BIFM fighters, led by Ameril Umbra Kato, attacked military detachments and villages in Maguindanao, leaving scores of troops dead and causing more than 7,000 families to flee the region.

Kato, who used to be in charge of the MILF 105th Base Command, is thought to have been behind the attacks on civilians in North Cotabato in 2008. The rogue commander heads the 1,000-strong armed wing of the BIFM, which broke away from the MILF two years ago.

MILF spokesman Von Al Haq claimed that Kato is still hiding somewhere in Datu Piang town in Maguidnanao but is apparently weak and can hardly speak because he is not getting enough supplies for his medical condition. He said, “His condition is deteriorating faster and only his wife and son are attending to him."

Top Hamas, always the voice of sweet reason, official Mahmoud Al-Zahar has made a clandestine visit to southern Leb and met with Hezbollah leaders, the Paleostinian newspaper Al-Quds reported. Al-Zahar visited a tourist site that displays military loot obtained by Hezbollah during the Second Leb War and toured military bases and tunnels in the region.

According to the report, Al-Zahar then travelled to Tehran, where he is expected to meet with President Mahmoud Short Round Ahmadinejad. He is said to have already met with various other Iranian leaders, including Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

EU threatens new Iran sanctions
[AFP] European Union
...the successor to the Holy Roman Empire, only without the Hapsburgs and the nifty uniforms and the dancing...
nations waved the threat of new international sanctions against Iran over its contested nuclear drive on Saturday, as Russia complained such measures harm its interests.

With frustration mounting over the lack of progress in talks between global powers and Iran, German Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle said Tehran has made no "substantial offer" to reassure the world of its nuclear intentions.

"Therefore we must prepare new sanctions," he told journalists at the close of two days of informal talks among EU foreign ministers, their first since the summer break.

"Atomic weapons in Iran are not acceptable," Westerwelle added.

Iran had a right to nuclear energy for civilian purposes, said French Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius, but "we consider unacceptable, highly dangerous, the prospect of Iran possessing nuclear weapons."

There was "a growing consensus" at the talks to slap new punitive measures against Iran failing a breakthrough in negotiations, ministers said.

British Foreign Secretary William Hague said existing sanctions were having "a serious impact" and that it was "necessary to increase the pressure on Iran, to intensify sanctions, to add further to the EU sanctions."

Iran has seen a 50 percent cut in state revenues from the oil sector and faces dire storage problems because it cannot sell, a diplomatic source said.

Raad Accuses March 14 of Involvement in 'Aggression' against Damascus
[An Nahar] Hizbullah MP Mohammed Raad lashed out at the March 14 alliance over its memorandum over the Syrian violations, accusing the coalition of covering up its participation in the aggression against Syria.

"The March 14 memo is incitement against Damascus
...The City of Jasmin is the oldest continuously-inhabited city in the world. It has not always been inhabited by the same set of fascisti...
and directly targets it," Raad said in a presser at the parliament.

The MP noted that the alliance never handed over a protest memorandum over the Israeli violations in Leb during the past six years.

Last week, ex-PM Fouad Saniora submitted to President Michel Suleiman
...before assuming office as President, he held the position of commander of the Leb Armed Forces. That was after the previous commander, the loathesome Emile Lahoud, took office as president in November of 1998. Likely the next president of Leb will be whoever's commander of the armed forces, too...
a memo prepared by the March 14 forces and demanding the annulment of the security treaties with Syria, the expulsion of the Syrian ambassador, the filing of a complaint with the Arab League
...an organization of Arabic-speaking states with 22 member countries and four observers. The League tries to achieve Arab consensus on issues, which usually leaves them doing nothing but a bit of grimacing and mustache cursing...
over Syria's violations and reporting the breaches to the U.N. Security Council.

Raad slammed the March 14 forces, saying that "if it was leading the government, we would be in a state of war with Syria."

He refused demands to deploy United Nations
...aka the Oyster Bay Chowder and Marching Society...
Interim Force in Leb along the northern border, pointing out that it "undermines the role carried out by the Lebanese army and its abilities."

The March 14 camp called on Suleiman to request the assistance of UNIFIL to control the Lebanese-Syrian border in accordance to resolution 1701.

Raad called on the President to be aware of the risks behind adopting the memorandum and the national powers to deal responsibly with it.

"The memo doesn't reflect any keenness to preserve Leb's illusory sovereignty and violates the Taef accord," the politician stated.

Raad called on the Lebanese authorities to investigate the festivities that erupted recently along the northern Lebanese-Syrian border and the side that opened fire first.

"The investigation will reveal if the alleged Syrian violations are true, and if Syria is opening fire first or if it comes as a reaction to violations committed by Leb," he added.
