Afghanistan
Daily Evacuation Brief March 2-5, 2023
Whew! All caught up now.
Daily Evacuation Brief | March 5, 2023
[AfghanDigest] LAST 24 HOURS
  • NATIONWIDE CRACKDOWN ON PAKISTANI CURRENCY – Multiple currency exchanges have been closed around Afghanistan for violating rules forbidding the exchange of Pakistani rupees. While the law has been selectively enforced from time to time under the Taliban, it now seems like it will be enforced universally.

  • NEW TALIBAN EMBASSY IN TEHRAN HALTS PASSPORT RENEWALS – The consulate in Tehran has suspended issuing passport renewals and has not provided any information on when it might resume these functions in the future. Hundreds of thousands of Afghans are in Iran and it is estimated that a large percentage require passport renewals.

  • PAKISTAN DEPLOYS 1,500 POLICE TO PROTECT CHINESE NATIONALS IN KHYBER PAKHTUNKHWA – In what is thought to be linked to a massive loan by a large Chinese bank, the Pakistani government has deployed approximately 1,500 district, elite, and frontier police to the Province to protect and safeguard Chinese nationals who were working on several projects. Pakistan has seen a wave of anti-Chinese protests and sentiments over the past year and both ISIS-K and the TTP have stated intentions to target Chinese-led initiatives in both Afghanistan and Pakistan.

  • THE AFGHAN EMBASSY IN ROME IDENTIFIED 32 AFGHANS WHO WERE AMONG THE DEAD IN THE TRAGIC SHIPWRECK LAST WEEK – Discussions with the Italian Ministry of the Interior were focused on what to do with the bodies. 5 Afghans who survived but were suffering from exposure had been transferred to local hospitals. Other survivors are thought to be Afghan citizens as well and are currently being lodged in an immigration center in the center of Croton. It is not clear what will happen next.
NEXT 24 HOURS
POSSIBLE DEMONSTRATIONS AT TORKHAM – Travelers crossing through Torkham Gate on Saturday said crowds had formed on the Pakistan side of the border and were protesting electricity cuts. They attempted to block the road to Peshawar with makeshift barricades. Police dispersed the crowds but they vowed to return Sunday for further protests. At-risk Afghans attempting the crossing should be wary of the crowds and avoid intermingling with them if at all possible. Police are expected to deal harshly with any protestors.

  • TALIBAN SECURITY OPERATION IN HERAT – Sources say the Taliban raided a suspected ISIS-K safe house in Herat. Several videos of both the raid and the aftermath are circulating on social media sites. Unverified reports suggest that 2-6 suspected ISIS-K operatives were killed in the operation. One of the photos of the victims was of a woman. It is not clear if those targeted were involved with ISIS-K and a source claimed that they may have gotten the wrong address for the house.

  • TALIBAN POLICE FORM A SPECIAL COUNTER-TERROR UNIT – A new unit has been formed by the Taliban police and is currently stationed in Police District 15. It is being billed as an anti-terrorism force and is comprised of approximately 110 men. Their reported mission is to react to emergency situations, conduct regular patrolling, and to conduct extensive search operations in Kabul. A propaganda video of the recruits has been shared on social media, showcasing their physical fitness abilities. While the stated purpose of the mission is for counter-terrorism operations, the proximity of their garrison headquarters in PD15 suggests the force was constituted with the Resistance in mind.

  • TALIBAN ARREST FAMILY OF FORMER GOVERNOR OF BAMYAN PROVINCE – In all, 8 people were arrested and 4 were brothers and cousins of the former Governor, Tahir Zuhair. The former Governor joined the renegade Hazara Commander, Mawlawi Mahdi, and faced off against the Taliban in Sar-e-Puhl Province. After Mahdi’s alleged murder, Zuhair was said to have hidden in Sar-e-Puhl and Bamiyan Provinces. A source with the Ministry of the Interior said the arrests were made as a warning message to Zuhair, to keep him from taking part in any Spring campaign operations against the Taliban. There are also rumors that a ransom has been levied for the release of his family members. Some rumors were spread over the Winter months that Zuhair may have successfully reconstituted half of Mahdi’s Hazara force and had commitments from almost 2,000 Hazara to join him in 2023. This information has not been verified.

  • CONFLICTING REPORTS ABOUT CONTROVERSIAL UNIVERSITY PROFESSOR’S STATUS – Ismail Mashal, the controversial University professor who was arrested after distributing books from a library cart in Kabul remains under arrest after several news outlets reported that he had been released on Thursday. A family member who is in contact with the Professor discounted the reports and said he remains in Taliban custody. Mashal gained notoriety when he tore up his diploma on a live television broadcast over the ban on women attending school.

CONFLICT TRACKER
Samangan: Unidentified gunmen ambushed the security detail for the Taliban agricultural chief in the Suf-Samangan valley. The bodyguard of the agricultural director, Abu Tarab, was killed and others were wounded, The bodyguard in question was reputedly corrupt and extracted bribes from citizens while threatening to take their land. No group has yet claimed responsibility.
Herat: Taliban security forces raided a suspected ISIS-K hideout. The subsequent clash resulted in 2-6 deaths of suspected ISIS-K terrorists, One of those killed in the clash was said to be a woman. Details are sketchy at this point.

NEXT 24 HOURS
THREAT TO CENTRAL BANK AUCTION – A source has said there is concern that a potential terrorist attack on the Da Afghanistan Bank auction on Saturday could result in many deaths. The threat was vague and it was not clear which group may be behind the plot but we advise at-risk Afghans who may be planning on attending the auction or who may find themselves in the vicinity to avoid the area. Security is typically tight for these events and no cash actually changes hands, but those who attend the auctions are considered to be high-value economic targets for dissident groups.

  • TTP TARGETED IN AFGHANISTAN – A blast, reportedly from an IED, occurred in Khost Province on Thursday. Multiple sources said that at least 6 TTP personnel were killed and another 15 were wounded. No details have emerged about the location of the incident but several senior Commanders were among the dead and wounded. While no group has claimed credit for the attack, suspicion has fallen upon Pakistan’s intelligence service. The timing of the attack suggests Pakistan may have decided to act on threats to carry the terrorism fight into Afghanistan. Based on the identities of those confirmed to have been targeted, it seems clear the TTP has an internal security problem. To achieve such dramatic results, it is feasible to assume that planners have access to TTP schedules and locational information. The development puts the Afghan Taliban in a difficult position with regard to the TTP. If Pakistan is confirmed to have been behind the attack, Kabul will be prodded to take some form of reciprocal action to demonstrate their sovereign rule and head off a potential mutiny of between 5,000 and 7,500 fighters.

  • DUTCH SEISMOLOGIST WHO PREDICTED TURKEY QUAKE REPEATS WARNING OF MAJOR ‘EVENT’ IN EARLY MARCH – Frank Hoogerbeets, a seismologist in the Netherlands who accurately predicted the devastating quake in Turkey and Syria has issued a new warning of a potential 8+ magnitude earthquake could strike Asia and the Pacific. He says that planetary geometry between the 2nd and 5th of March could result in a mega-thrust earthquake anytime between 3-7 March. Mr. Hoogerbeets has issued several warnings in the past, including a warning for Afghanistan/Pakistan after the Turkey quake. Many of his warnings were false alarms. Elevating concerns, a 4.1 magnitude earthquake was reported in Badakhshan on Thursday. No damage or casualties have been reported from this event.

  • SALANG PASS CLOSED TO HEAVY TRUCKS FOR SNOW – Heavy snowfall on Thursday forced the closure of the road for commercial traffic. Work crews were attempting to clear the accumulation but have been hampered by maintenance issues and a reported lack of fuel. Private vehicles were still allowed to travel but many have run off the road and are mired in deep drifts.

  • FORMER AFGHAN SECURITY OFFICIAL EXECUTED IN PAKTIKA – Badr al-Din Haidari, a former soldier and police commander in the Province was placed on trial and was summarily executed after having been arrested three days earlier. He had initially fled to Pakistan but returned under the general amnesty program the Taliban claim to have put in place.

  • TALIBAN AGRICULTURE CHIEF IN PANJSHIR ARRESTED – Qari Mujib, the head of the provincial agriculture department was reportedly arrested over ties with ISIS-K. His arrest follows the detention of Mawlawi Rashid in Badakhshan who was the head of the provincial culture department. Both men are accused of collaborating with ISIS-K.

CONFLICT TRACKER
Khost: An IED blast killed 6 TTTP fighters and wounded an additional 15 members. Several known commanders were among those killed, Few derails are known about the attack, but confirmation has been received from multiple sources.

NEXT 24 HOURS
THE BOMBING ATTACK IN KHOST COULD STIR UP TROUBLE – It is not clear what actions Kabul may take in response to the operational strike on senior TTP leaders in Khost Province on Thursday. Taliban leaders may have a grace period as information continues to arrive over the attack, but if consensus over Pakistan’s potential involvement is reached, they may respond in any number of ways. While a direct military confrontation seems unlikely, it is possible that other punitive measures could be taken (e.g. expelling Pakistan’s diplomatic and consular staff, closing borders, etc). A key indicator that action may be imminent will be if the IEA’s Foreign Ministry calls Pakistan’s senior diplomat on the carpet or, if Afghanistan’s envoy in Islamabad may deliver a demarche to the Pakistani Foreign Minister. Alternatively, the incident could simply be ignored which may provoke a reaction by the TTP in Afghanistan. At the very least, the brazen attack will likely make all of Pakistan’s diplomatic and consular facilities in Afghanistan priority targets for the TTP. At-risk Afghans are encouraged to avoid these facilities for the next few days.

  • DOHA DEAL ANNIVERSARY PASSES WITH MUCH FINGERPOINTING – The anniversary of the much-maligned ‘Doha Deal’ arrived with a sharp exchange of barbs between the Taliban and the US. The Taliban claim they have met all the requirements included in the deal and used the date to call for recognition and an unfreezing of assets they claim to belong to them. The US used the date to remind the Taliban they had fallen short in several areas and an ill-timed announcement from the Taliban concerning the reopening of Universities to MALE STUDENTS ONLY undercut the Taliban’s pleas and there are very few who believe that Afghanistan is secure and does not pose a terror threat to other states.

  • PASSPORT DIRECTORATE REOPENS NATIONWIDE – The head of the Passport Directorate announced the resumption of the process across the country. He said that online passport registration had been opened for all Afghans and the goal was to reach an eventual daily distribution rate of 10,000 per day. He did say that some technical difficulties were still being worked out and many who have been waiting for months are skeptical the announcement will bear fruit.

  • MORE ARRESTS OF FORMER ARMY SOLDIERS IN PANJSHIR – Possibly in an attempt to damage Resistance forces in the Province, the Taliban have arrested an additional 20 former soldiers of the previous regime. No charges were announced, but the men were taken to a central holding facility and presumably will face interrogation. Local eyewitnesses say the men had not taken up arms against the Taliban and many thought the arrests were meant as a message to others in the Province who may be considering joining the NRF or other Resistance groups.

  • PAKISTAN’S SENIOR ENVOY TO AFGHANISTAN RESIGNS – Mohammad Sadiq, announced his resignation on Twitter and said that after three years, it was time for him to focus on family and other matters. The search for a new envoy has begun and the list of candidates who are considered to possess the bona fides to take on the difficult mission is reputedly a short one.

  • TALIBAN ASK ICRC TO ASSIST WITH RECOVERING BODIES FROM ITALIAN SHIPWRECK – The Foreign Minister called on ICRC to assist with returning the approximately 80 bodies to Afghanistan. It was not clear if the ICRC or other NGO’s would answer the Minister’s calls as many of their female employees in Afghanistan are barred from continuing the organization’s mission.

CONFLICT TRACKER
Kabul: An ALF team reportedly struck a Taliban checkpoint at the Alauddin intersection. They claim to have killed 1 fighter and wounded 2 more.
Kost: Local sources said a drone was used to attack the Zandran Hotel in the Spin Mosque district. The hotel was said to be harboring TTP fighters. Casualties were reported by both sources, but a firm count was not supplied. Taliban security personnel have swarmed the area. This information has yet to be verified.
Kunduz: NRF forces a bushed a Taliban vehicle in the Aliabad district, claiming to have killed 1 Talib fighter and wounded 2 others. The vehicle was reportedly destroyed.

NEXT 24 HOURS
TALIBAN KEY LEADERS RECALLED TO KANDAHAR – It is possible a significant announcement will be made regarding current policies in place by the Taliban after sources revealed that most of the most important Ministers and Department Chiefs were called to Kandahar. While no information concerning the reason for the high-level conference has been received, it is the first mass gathering of its kind since the Fall of 2022. We are waiting to confirm if the Ministers of Defense and the Interior have made the trip.

Taliban-Appointed Agriculture Head in Panjshir Arrested on Corruption Charges
[8AMmedia] Abdul Mujib Mushafaq, who was appointed by the Taliban as the head of agriculture, irrigation, and livestock in Panjshir, has reportedly been arrested by the Taliban intelligence.

Sources informed Hasht-e Subh on Friday that Abdul Mujib was taken into custody in Kabul city five days ago by the Taliban intelligence on allegations of abusing official powers, financial and administrative corruption, and immorality crimes.

Contradictory reports suggest that Abdul Mujib may have been apprehended for colluding with ISKP, with explosives allegedly discovered in his possession at the time of his arrest.

Abdul Mujib Mushafaq hails from the Qarabagh district of Kabul and has served as the head of agriculture, irrigation, and livestock in Panjshir for the past year.

The Taliban have not made any official statement regarding this matter.

In the past, the Taliban have detained and jailed multiple local officials on diverse allegations.

"It is not called life when every night we sleep in fear, when you don't know what is going on in the neighborhood," said Ahmad Shah Ferozi, a resident of Herat.

This is the third military operation against ISIS affiliates in Herat city in the previous six months.

Four more killed in Samburu as bandits continue to terrorise locals
[NATION.AFRICA] Witnesses told the Nation.Africa that the criminals staged a daring broad-daylight attack and rubbed out the herders who were grazing in the Lolmolok grazing field.

"We are being killed in our land. Where else do we go? This is becoming worse because the bandidos are displacing us," said Boniface Lesuyai.

The two reportedly went titzup after sustaining severe gunshot wounds. The victims' bodies have been taken to the Samburu Referral Hospital Mortuary awaiting postmortem.

In another separate incident, armed bandidos raided Marti area in Samburu North in the wee hours of Saturday. They killed two children before driving away an unknown number of livestock.

Yemeni Nationals File Lawsuit Against Top US Defense Contractors for ''Aiding and Abetting War Crimes and Extrajudicial Killings'' in Yemen
[HODHODYEMENNEWS.NET] A group of Yemen
...an area of the Arabian Peninsula sometimes mistaken for a country. It is populated by more antagonistic tribes and factions than you can keep track of...
i nationals has filed a lawsuit in the US against military contractors Raytheon, Lockheed Martin, and General Dynamics, accusing them of "aiding and abetting war crimes and extrajudicial killings" by supplying arms to the Saudi-led aggression on Yemen.

The lawsuit, filed in the district court of Washington DC, also names the leaders of Saudi Arabia
...a kingdom taking up the bulk of the Arabian peninsula. Its primary economic activity involves exporting oil and soaking Islamic rubes on the annual hajj pilgrimage. The country supports a large number of princes in whatcha might call princely splendor. Fifteen of the nineteen WTC hijackers were Saudis, and most major jihadi commanders were Saudis, to include Osama bin Laden. Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman quietly folded that tent in 2016, doing terrible things to the guys running it, and has since been dragging the kingdom into the current century...
and the United Arab Emirates, Mohammed bin Salman
...Crown Prince and modernizer of Saudi Arabia as of 2016. The Turks hate him, so he must be all right, despite the occasional brutal murder of Qatar-owned journalists. As crown prince, Moe has quietly jettisoned his country's policy of trying to impose its religion on the rest of the world...
and Mohammed bin Zayed, respectively, as well as US Secretary of State Antony Blinken and Pentagon chief Lloyd Austin.

"Year after year, the bombs fell — on wedding tents, funeral halls, fishing boats and a school bus — killing thousands of civilians and helping turn Yemen into the world’s worst humanitarian crisis," read the lawsuit.

It further mentioned that "Weapons supplied by US companies through sales unlawfully approved by US officials, allowed Saudi Arabia and the UAE through the named Defendant officials to pursue an indiscriminate and brutal bombing campaign."

The plaintiffs are seven Yemeni individuals who say they represent the victims of two separate bombings in the country — one for a wedding in 2015 and another for a funeral in 2016.

In October 2015, the al-Sanabani family was readying to celebrate a relative’s wedding when a warplane bombed the area, martyring 43 people including 13 women and 16 children, according to Human Rights Watch [HRW].

One year later, in October 2016, a crowded funeral was bombed and more than 100 people were martyred. HRW reported that the bomb used was the US-manufactured GBU-12 Paveway II laser-guided bomb.

"I found him under a burning car, he was dead, his legs were cut off, and his right hand was cut off too, he was completely burnt," Khaled Ali Salem Chaib, one of the victims, said in a statement detailing the death of his son from the wedding bombing in 2015.

He further mentioned that "Some nights when I sleep, I feel tight in my body, and I have disturbing nightmares and I can’t bear to see the scene of the crime since."

The Yemenis are filing the lawsuit under the Torture Victim Protection Act [TVPA], a 1991 US law that allows victims of torture to sue for compensation from their tormenters if the accused are in the US.

The lawsuit names the Saudi and Emirati crown princes under the Alien Tort Statute, a law that grants federal courts jurisdiction over violations of international law.

The officials said Pir, a self-styled commander of the outfit, was rubbed out in Rawalpindi on February 21.

The NIA attached two land plots at Baghpora and Panzgam areas, measuring over three kanals belonging to Pir alias Imtiyaz Alam.

Pir, who was reportedly in charge of launching snuffies into Jammu and Kashmir through Line of Control (LoC), was designated a terrorist by the Centre on October 4 last year under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) for his role in terror activities.

According to the notification, Pir participated in several online propaganda groups to unite ex-snuffies and other cadres for the expansion of activities of Hizbul Mujahideen and Lashkar-e-Taiba

The NIA action follows the attaching of a Srinagar-based property of the founder and chief commander of the al-Umar Mujahideen, Mushtaq Zargar alias ’Latram’, on Thursday, and the attachment of property of The Resistance® Front (TRF) operative Basit Ahmad Reshi in Baramulla district on Friday.

The NIA has till date, attached the properties of six designated snuffies — US based Gurpatwant Singh Pannun, Canada based Hardeep Singh Nijjar, and Pakistain based terrorists-Mushtaq Zargar alias Latram, Basit Ahmad Pir, Bashir Ahmad Reshi and KCF (Panjwar) Paramjit Singh alias Panjwar.

The NIA recently attached, under UAPA, the Hurriyat Office in Srinagar, which was owned in part by Nayeem Khan, an accused charge sheeted by the NIA in the Hurriyat terror funding case.

Palestinians mount patrols in West Bank to prevent settler incursions
If they’re busy guarding themselves, they’re less likely to be off causing trouble elsewhere — or so it seems to me in my ignorance.
[IsraelTimes] ’We have become more vigilant than before,’ a leader of a watch group in Turmus Ayya says, after settlers rampaged in Huwara following deadly terror shooting

Wielding long sticks and with their faces wrapped in Paleostinian checkered keffiyeh scarves, young men set out on a night patrol to guard their village in the Israeli-controlled West Bank.

Each night, the team gathers at Turmus Ayya in the north of the West Bank, ready to raise the alarm in the event of a raid by Israeli settlers, who have set up bases in outposts around the village.

"We do not intend to attack anyone — we work to defend our people and our village, our home, our land, and our honor," one said, requesting anonymity for fear of arrest by Israeli forces.

"These are our weapons — sticks and flashlights — and we have nothing but them to defend ourselves," he said, raising a baton and a powerful electric torch.

Tensions are high, especially after the nearby Paleostinian town of Huwara came under attack by settlers on Sunday, hours after two Israeli brothers were killed in a terror attack there as they drove past.

Hundreds of rampaging settlers — 300 to 400 people, according to the Israeli army — set homes and cars ablaze.

After the attack, Defense Minister Yoav Gallant deplored the situation as "intolerable" and warned that Israel "cannot allow a situation in which citizens take the law into their (own) hands."

Police said they had made a handful of arrests, but all those held have since been released. On Thursday, the Defense Ministry approved administration detention for two suspects, a controversial practice whereby individuals can be held without charge practically indefinitely, and are not granted access to the evidence against them.

"After what happened in Huwara, we have become more vigilant than before," said one of the leaders of the patrol, his face concealed.

The team first formed last year after tensions with the settlers rose following a clash, but they increased patrols after attacks this year, moving around on foot or on off-road buggies. Some carry baseball bats.

"We, the youth, formed guard committees... we take turns with each other to fend off any possible attack," another said.

LOOKOUTS ON THE HILLS
Turmus Ayya, home to some 4,000 people, many of them Paleostinian-Americans, has seen a number of recent attacks by settlers.

In January, a Paleostinian home and vehicle were torched in the village, in an arson attack in which Israeli holy warriors were the suspected perpetrators, an Israeli security official told AFP.

"Settlement outposts surround the village, and every two weeks there is an assault," another member of the defense group said.

In recent weeks, a group of settlers was seen coming close to the village, but on spotting the patrol, they retreated.

The West Bank is home to about 2.9 million Paleostinians as well as an estimated 500,000 Jewish settlers, who live in state-approved settlements widely considered illegal under international law.

The young Paleostinian men move in groups, monitoring the area from a hilltop to watch for any movement from the settlers on hills across the valley.

Abdul Karim al-Zaghloul, a Paleostinian-American from Ohio visiting family in the village, brought cups of hot tea to the young men on a cold night.

"We are ready for any attack, God willing," another patrol member said.

Pro-Palestinian activist gets 18 months in prison for attacks on Jews in New York
[IsraelTimes] Saadah Masoud sent to federal facility for 3 antisemitic assaults in 2021 and 2022; ’Hate-fueled violence will not be tolerated in our community,’ prosecutor says

"Are you a fucking Jew?" Masoud asked the man, then punched him in the face.
A federal judge in New York City on Friday sentenced a pro-Paleostinian activist muppet to 18 months in prison for a series of attacks on Jews in 2021 and 2022. Saadah Masoud, 29, pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit hate crimes in the Southern District Court of New York in November as part of a plea agreement. Masoud, from the borough of Staten Island, attacked three Jews in separate incidents that were motivated by antisemitism, prosecutors said.

The lawyer for Matt Greenman, one of the victims, said the prison sentence was an important step for the prosecution of hate crimes in New York. Jews and their allies have long said local prosecutors are too lenient when it comes to antisemitic crime. Federal convictions for hate crimes are relatively rare.

"It’s meaningful considering all the hate crimes we’ve seen. We see these defendants, they get a slap on the wrist, they get hoisted on their friends’ shoulders and it’s a celebration," said Gerard Filitti, Greenman’s lawyer. "Finally we have a sentence. Eighteen months is a meaningful sentence in federal prison, so this is what we’ve been waiting for and this is hopefully the beginning of a change."

Filitti said he hoped for further action in the case against Masoud’s co-conspirators.

"This shines a light on what a lot of people in the Jewish community and our allies have been saying for years, that a lot of these attacks are not isolated incidents, they’re not instances where it’s a crime in passing," Filitti said. "A lot of these attacks are not just motivated by hate, but they are conspired to, there is a concerted effort to do harm to the Jewish community."

Jews are targeted in hate crimes more than any other group in New York City.

Prosecutors had asked for a sentence of 18 months to two years, saying the offenses were "extremely serious."

"Hate-motivated violence such as the defendant’s conduct sends a message to an entire group of people that its members are not safe. It targets communities, dehumanizing them," prosecutors said, arguing that deterrence was a "significant consideration" at a time of rising antisemitism.

The defense had requested a sentence of six months, and argued that the attacks were not antisemitic but personally and politically motivated, and should not be tied to antisemitic trends.

"While we hoped for a lower sentence, the judge did sentence him at the very bottom of the guidelines and showed great understanding and compassion," said one of Masoud’s lawyers, Ronald Kuby. "She resisted the government’s invitation to blame a traumatized Paleostinian kid for the rise of neo-Nazi
...adherents of a philosophy that was seen even at the time as pure evil, which makes them either consciously and purely evil, or attention-seeking ratbags. Pick one, or both....
and right-wing antisemitism in America and for that she should be applauded."

US Attorney Damian Williams, one of the prosecutors, said Masoud "repeatedly attacked New Yorkers based on their religion and national origin."

"The prosecution of this case and the sentence imposed today make clear that hate-fueled violence will not be tolerated in our community and that this office will be unrelenting in our efforts to hold accountable those who perpetrate senseless crimes of hate," Williams said.

In May of 2021, around the time of a conflict between Israel and the Hamas, the well-beloved offspring of the Moslem Brotherhood, terror group, Masoud and associates planned to attack Jews at a pro-Israel rally in New York City.

Court documents showed the group discussed bringing weapons including Molotov cocktails to the rally.

"VIOLENT!! ONLY VIOLENCE... IN PALESTINE THEY WISHHH THEY COULD SMACK A ZIONIST AND NOT GET TORTURED TO DEATH. WE CAN THO!!" Masoud said in the group chat. He also gloated about attacks, saying, "I beat the shit out of three Zionists yesterday and didn’t even see a jail cell."

The perpetrators also told each other to cover their faces to evade prosecution and to use the term "Zionists" instead of Jews, apparently to avoid allegations of antisemitism.

"Remember, don’t chant out Jews, it’s the Zionists," one of them said.

One of the people in the chat followed up by saying, "Fuck all Jews."

The day after Masoud and his associates held the group chat, they went to a pro-Israel protest and picked out a man wearing a Star of David while he was walking with his wife.

"Are you a fucking Jew?" Masoud asked the man, then punched him in the face. Afterward, he texted his associates, "no videos of me anywhere lmaooo. I’m Gucci. No face no case."

Less than two weeks later, Masoud and a co-conspirator drove to the Brooklyn home of Heshy Tischler, a contentious, conservative, well-known figure in the Orthodox community in Borough Park. Tischler later told prosecutors that Masoud had shouted antisemitic insults at him at a previous Black Lives Matter rally.

Masoud approached Tischler while he was waiting in a car for his wife and granddaughter and threatened him, saying, "We know where you live, we’ll get you." Tischler got out of the car and attempted to film Masoud, who slapped the phone out of Tischler’s hand. Masoud’s associate then punched Tischler in the face. Several days later Masoud referred to Tischler in a text message as "some Jew politician."

In the third attack, Masoud pursued and beat a Jewish man, Matt Greenman, on the sidelines of a pro-Paleostinian protest in Manhattan in April 2022. The victim had gone to the event as a counter-protester with an Israeli flag. Masoud knocked him to the sidewalk, repeatedly punched him in the face, causing a concussion, then burned his Israeli flag at the head of the protest.

The victim and an elderly woman at the scene who was knocked down required hospital treatment. The prelude to the attack and part of the assault were caught on camera.

The following day, Masoud discussed arranging witnesses to back him up in a text message chat, telling a friend and another acquaintance to "get your stories straight." They planned to say the victim had tried to attack them with crutches.

Masoud later messaged a Jewish Instagram account that posted about the incident, saying, "I feel bad for you zionist people when judgment day comes and we slaughter all of them like sheep."

Masoud was arrested in June 2022. When he arrived at the courthouse, he asked a detective, "All this for one Jew?" Shortly after, an investigator overheard him saying he didn’t want any "Greenbergs" for lawyers, and when he received counsel, he demanded the attorney recite and spell his last name, apparently to check if he was Jewish.

While he was being monitored before the trial, he refused to be supervised by an officer with the Jewish surname "Rothman." Masoud repeatedly violated the terms of his home confinement during the legal process and was remanded to the custody of the US Marshal’s Service last month after a bail violation hearing.

Masoud has ties to Within Our Lifetime Paleostine, an activist muppet group that regularly calls for an intifada and the destruction of Israel at rallies in New York, and urged the targeting of Jewish groups in the city, including by handing out maps of Jewish organization locations at a protest.

Most suspected hate incidents in New York do not result in a conviction. The feds took up the Masoud case amid complaints from the Jewish community about the lack of penalties against anti-Jewish attackers, and criticism of cashless bail laws that often let assailants free shortly after their arrest.

An aimed industrial laser might be a good add-on for these cameras. That polyester blend burns nicely.
