Billionaire founder of electric truck firm Nikola is found GUILTY of fraud after inflating value of firm to $3.3bn - briefly more than Ford - with litany of lies including rolling truck downhill to pretend it worked
  • Nikola Corp. founder Trevor Milton was convicted of charges he deceived investors with exaggerated claims about his company

  • Milton championed that his company was producing zero-emission, 18-wheel trucks that could run on cheap hydrogen

  • Prosecutors described Milton as a con man who lied to inflate his company's value to $3.3 billion and created promotion videos for non-existent trucks

  • They also said Milton sought first-time investors who he could easily dupe into believing his outlandish claims

  • Milton was freed on a $100 million bond, with a sentencing hearing set for 2023

#1  Yet another dicked-up 'green' company.

BTW, I seem to recall that Milton was arrested at the Phoenix airport, possibly/probably attempting to flee the country.

I hope the authorities have a leash on him and confiscated his passport. A $100 million bond for a billionaire...might be something he can afford to lose.

Teen busted flashing firearm to impress friend at NYC high school: cops
[NYPOST] A 16-year-old boy was busted at a Queens high school while flashing a firearm to impress his friend, police sources said Friday.

The teen, who has no prior run-ins with the law, was arrested at Epic High School in South Richmond Hill on Thursday afternoon with a Glock-26 in his backpack, the sources said.

School safety agents were alerted to the gun after another student spotted the teen showing off the piece and reported it, sources said.

NYC homeless woman who allegedly pickpocketed dead man is freed without bail
[NYPOST] A homeless woman who allegedly pickpocketed a dead man was freed on supervised release without bail at her arraignment Friday — as sources said she tried to use the victim’s stolen cash but couldn’t because it was covered in blood.

Geniece Draper, 40 — who was charged with grand and petit larcenies for the morbid crime — stayed mum in court after allegedly snatching the wallet of a man who was crushed by a truck last week.

"This defendant appeared on video taking money out of a dead man’s pocket," a prosecutor said at the arraignment hearing.

As she left Manhattan Criminal Court, Draper told The Post, she was snatching back cash from the dead man, who was also homeless and identified as Jerome Smith, 62.

"He robbed me first," she said. "He got killed after."

Draper said Smith had swiped $120 from her at an ATM, but declined to elaborate.

15-year-old Austin Thompson IDed as Raleigh rampage suspect: report
More on this story from yesterday.
[NYPOST] The 15-year-old boy who police say carried out the rampage in Raleigh, North Carolina, that left five dead and two others injured was identified as the younger brother of one of the casualties, according to a report.

Austin Thompson was behind the deadly shooting spree in east Raleigh that began around 5 p.m. Thursday, local station WRAL reported, citing anonymous sources.

The 15-year-old’s brother, James Roger Thompson, a junior at Knightdale High School, was identified earlier as the youngest of the five deceased victims.

Raleigh Police Chief Estelle Patterson named the other fatalities as off-duty officer Gabriel Torres, 29, Nicole Conners, 52, Mary Marshall, 35, and Susan Karnatz, 49.

K-9 Officer Casey Clark was maimed during the incident but has since been treated and released from the hospital.

Are Crabs the Canary in the Coalmine?
[OTP] In a major blow to America’s seafood industry, the Alaska Department of Fish and Game has, for the first time in state history, canceled the winter snow crab season in the Bering Sea due to their falling numbers.

While restaurant menus will suffer, scientists worry what the sudden population plunge means for the health of the Arctic ecosystem.

An estimated one billion crabs have mysteriously disappeared in two years, state officials said. It marks a 90% drop in their population.

Upstate New York mom arrested for letting 10-year-old son get tattoo: cops
[NYPOST] An Upstate New York woman was arrested for letting her 10-year-old son get a permanent tattoo, cops said.

Crystal Thomas, 33, allegedly let the youngster get his name in big block letters in a procedure done at a "transient" hotel in the town of Highland, where Thomas and her two children were staying, according to a report.

She was slapped with a charge of endangering the welfare of a child for allowing her son to get "a large permanent ink tattoo on his body," according to local police.

In addition to the charges for Thomas, cops are now on the hunt for the amateur artist who inked up the kid.

The boy got the tattoo from a man unsupervised in a room next door to where Thomas and her kids had been staying for weeks, Lloyd police Chief James Janso told the Daily Mail.

"She wasn’t in the room with him," Janso reportedly said.

China fines Kenya $10 million for defaulting on SGR loans
[Garowe] The Chinese government has fined Kenya $ 10 million for defaulting on repayment of the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR).

This comes at a time when Ruto’s administration is struggling with mounting public debt.

The Chinese banks fined Kenya $10.8 million in the year ended June for loan defaults, according to Treasury documents seen by local media.

Kenya had borrowed over half a trillion shillings from Chinese lenders, led by the Export-Import Bank of China, to fund the construction of the SGR from Mombasa to Naivasha.

"This $10.8 million penalty relates to the cost of default on interest at one percent of the due amount," reads documents seen by the media.

Taxpayers have been forced to shoulder the burden of the SGR loans because revenues generated from the passenger and cargo services on the track are not enough to meet the operation costs, which stood at $152.8 million in the year to June against sales of $123.9 million.

SGR posted an operating loss of $28 million, and wired $187.6 million) in loan repayments in the year to June.

Earlier on Kenya had asked for an extension of the debt repayment moratorium from bilateral lenders, including China, by another six months to December 2021.

Chinese banks led by the Exim Bank of China opposed Kenya’s request for a debt repayment holiday in a standoff that delayed disbursements to projects funded by Chinese loans.

This forced the former regime to drop its push for an extension of the debt repayment holiday to avoid straining relations with Kenya’s biggest bilateral creditor.

However the outgoing Cabinet Secretary for National Treasury and Planning, Ukur Yattani refuted the claim and said the country has not defaulted on its repayment of the loan.

He further claimed that Kenya has good relations with every lender including China and every one of them will be treated equally.

killed at least 25 people and trapped dozens of others hundreds of metres underground.

Updating the corpse count, Health Minister Fahrettin Koca also tweeted that 11 others pulled out alive were being treated in hospital after one of Turkey's deadliest industrial accidents in years struck Friday at sunset.

"We are facing a truly regretful situation," Interior Minister Suleyman Soylu told news hounds earlier after urgently flying to the small coal mining town of Amasra on Turkey's Black Sea coast.

"In all, 110 of our brothers were working (underground). Some of them came out on their own, and some of them were rescued."

Soyli also confirmed early reports that nearly 50 miners remained trapped in two separate areas between 300 and 350 metres (985 to 1,150 feet) below ground.

Television images showed anxious crowds - some with tears in their eyes - congregating around a damaged white building near the entrance to the pit in search of news for their friends and loved ones.

said he would cancel all his other arrangements and fly to the scene of the accident on Saturday.

Now scientists say 'exercise intolerance' should be considered a symptom of long Covid
Apparently, I had COVID decades before it was popular.
Exercise intolerance is the key marker of Chronic Fatigue Syndrome. Congratulations, guys — if you don’t get better within three years, you probably won’t — until they figure out the cause and real treatments/cure beyond “don’t push beyond your limits and cause yourself to crash into greater exhaustion.” Yay.

  • Their muscles could not get enough oxygen and some were hyperventilating
