[AlAhram] 'The whole problem starts in the south,' al-Manqoush said, adding that Libya would need additional resources from the EU to tackle this problem "Give us money"
Securing Libya's southern borders is a priority for the country's transitional government as it aims to stem the flow of illegal migrants colonists setting off from its shores, Libya's interim foreign minister said Friday.
Najla al-Manqoush made the statements in a presser following meetings with Foreign Minister of Italia Luigi Di Maio, his Maltese counterpart Evarist Bartolo and European Commissioner for Neighborhood and Enlargement Oliver Varhelyi who visited the country Friday, along with Libya's Prime Minister Abdul Hamid Dbeibah.
Since the election of Libya's new interim government in February, a series of senior European and American diplomats have visited the North African country, placing their faith in the new Libyan administration that is expected to lead the nation through general elections in December 2021.
Many European leaders are also hoping that the new government could prove more effective than its predecessors in cutting off the smuggling routes that migrants colonists have used to first enter and cross Libya, before setting off for Europe. Italia and other European governments have faced criticism at home for their handling of the migrant issue.
``We talked about how to strengthen our partnership on fighting illegal migration and monitoring water borders by adopting short-term as well as long-term strategies,'' Italia's Di Maio said.

For almost a decade, war-torn Libya has been the dominant transit point for migrants colonists fleeing war and poverty in Africa and the Middle East and aspiring to settle in Europe. Smugglers often pack desperate families into ill-equipped rubber boats that stall and founder along the perilous central Mediterranean route.
In recent years, the EU has partnered with Libya's coasties and other local groups to stem such dangerous sea crossings. Rights groups, however, say those policies leave migrants colonists at the mercy of either the sea or Libya's gangs, with many ending up confined in squalid detention centers rife with abuses.
According to the International Organization for Migration's Missing Moslem colonists Migrants project, at least 612 people are known to have died or gone missing in the Mediterranean so far this year. That's significantly higher than during the same time period last year, when 278 died or disappeared. Attempts to cross the sea often increase in the warmer summer months.

[TASS] Russia’s Federal Security Service (FSB) apprehended 14 members of the Ukrainian youth radical group MKU in Saratov in southern Russia, the FSB press office told TASS on Friday.
"As part of a criminal probe opened under Parts 1 and 2 of Article 282.1 of Russia’s Criminal Code (‘Establishing an Extremist Group and Participating in an Extremist Group’), the Federal Security Service in interaction with the Interior Ministry and the Investigative Committee foiled the activity of a youth radical group coordinated from the territory of Ukraine that advocates the ideology of mass killings (MKU)," the press office said.
As a result, 14 members of the group were detained, the statement says.
The FSB seized a large amount of propagandistic extremist materials from the group, as well as knives, communications devices with instructions on making improvised explosives and firearms and also correspondence with the group’s mastermind from Ukraine about plotting violent actions, the press office said.
"The members of the group are making confessionary statements," the FSB said.
Following investigative measures, a measure of restraint will be chosen for the detainees. They face prison terms of six to ten years and two to six years, respectively.
An FSB video of the raid can be seen here. It is on the Russian VKontakte page of reserve FSB Colonel Igor Girkin

[ENGLISH.AAWSAT] The United States said Thursday it was "outraged" by the fact that recent peaceful protests in Iraq were "met with threats and brutal violence," in a statement from State Department front man Ned Price.
"The violation of Iraqi illusory sovereignty and rule of law by armed militias harms all Iraqis and their country," Price said, two days after two Iraqis were killed during demonstrations by thousands of people in Baghdad.
Another 28 people were maimed in the protests, which were held to demand justice over a wave of deadly attacks on freedom fighters and journalists.
The following day, Iraqi police separately arrested a bigwig in an Iran-backed gang on suspicion of orchestrating the killing of a prominent pro-democracy activist amid a wave of murders of activists and journalists that started in 2019.
"We welcome every effort by the government to hold accountable the militias, thugs, and vigilante groups for their attacks against Iraqis exercising their right to freedom of expression and peaceful assembly as well as for their assault on the rule of law," AFP quoted Price as saying.
"The United States is outraged that peaceful demonstrators who erupted into the streets to urge reform were met with threats and brutal violence," Price added.
Killings, attempted murders and abductions have targeted more than 70 activists since a protest movement erupted against government corruption and incompetence in 2019.

[Daily Caller via Rantingly] Shh. It's a secret.
The Pentagon is planning to seek approval from President Joe Biden on strikes against Iranian-backed militias in Iraq, according to two sources with knowledge of the situation.
Iraq’s Ain al-Asad air base, which hosts U.S. forces, suffered from a rocket attack Monday. No one was hurt during the attack, a coalition spokesman told Reuters. This is the latest in a series of similar attacks over the past several weeks.
"The administration is looking hard at a broad range of responses to Shiite militia aggression against Americans in Iraq," one source with knowledge of the situation told the Daily Caller.
The source noted that authorities have been in place since the strike against Gen. Qasem Soleimani — the former leader of Iran’s elite Quds Force — but require individual authorization for each strike at the directive of the president.
The operations plan and various options will be discussed with the White House through the National Security Council, according to a second source briefed on the matter.

Before gaining independence so-called Iraq was ruled by Turks and Mamaluks for centuries. There then followed a succession of dictatorships. There is absolutely no tradition of indigenous rule since Biblical times. Thus. asking Iraqis (Arabs, Kurds, Sunnis, Shiites) to unite in some sort of freedom-loving state is, unfortunately, a losing proposition.

[ENGLISH.AAWSAT] House Republicans have accused US President Joe The Big Guy Biden ...46th president of the U.S. The very model of probity.... ’s administration of failing to enforce sanctions on Syria as part of a bid to appease Iran.
"We are concerned that your administration is failing to enforce US sanctions law on one of the worst human rights One man's rights are another man's existential threat. violators in the world, who has killed half a million people, as a concession to Iran ...a theocratic Shiite state divided among the Medes, the Persians, and the (Arab) Elamites. Formerly a fairly civilized nation ruled by a Shah, it became a victim of Islamic revolution in 1979. The nation is today noted for spontaneously taking over other countries' embassies, maintaining whorehouses run by clergymen, involvement in international drug trafficking, and financing sock puppet militias to extend the regime's influence. The word Iran is a cognate form of Aryan. The abbreviation IRGC is the same idea as Stürmabteilung (or SA). The term Supreme Guide is a the modern version form of either Duce or Führer or maybe both. They hate JewsZionists Jews. Their economy is based on the production of oil and vitriol... to re-enter the failed Iran nuclear deal," the politicians wrote.
In a letter sent to State and Treasury Secretaries Antony Blinken and Janet Yellen, they expressed deep concern that after months of being in office, the administration has refused to impose any sanctions.
They further wondered why the administration has not exercised its sanctions authority under the Caesar Act, which was approved by the Congress in late 2019.
"Is the administration refusing to enforce sanctions on one of the world’s worst human rights violators, Bashir al-Assad, as a concession to the Iranians as part of rejoining the JCPOA?" they asked.
The politicians, Bryan Steil, Jim Banks and Joe Wilson, are members of the Republican Study Committee, the House’s largest conservative caucus, which opposes the administration’s efforts to provide Iran with massive sanctions relief.
"After more than 100 days in office, the Biden administration has refused to impose any sanctions under the Caesar Act. Sanctions enforcement against these threats must be a top priority," the letter read.
"The Iran Deal sold out the Syrian people the first time around, and I fear that history is repeating itself," Wilson wrote.
"Iran has repeatedly violated congressionally approved US sanctions on Syria by sending shiploads of crude oil to Assad. This also violates sanctions on Iran aimed at stymieing its oil trade and cutting off a source of revenue for the hardline regime."
Republican foreign policy leaders are investigating the matter, the letter stressed, noting that the investigation is one of several active probes being led by the Committee.
The congressmen said they are "committed to investigating and uncovering any sanctions relief provided to Iran and its allies as part of your (administration’s) efforts to re-enter the Iran nuclear deal".
