[Washington Examiner] Several United States military personnel died after coming under direct fire during an operation in eastern Afghanistan.
A firefight killed five or six American service members after a conflict in Nangarhar Province on Saturday, according to reports. The incident is believed to have been a "green-on-blue" attack that left six fatalities for Afghan forces as well. A "green-on-blue" attack occurs when American troops are harmed by friendly forces or extremists posing as forces that are in partnerships with the U.S.
It is not yet clear if the conflict was triggered by a Taliban infiltrator or if it was due to a dispute between U.S. and Afghan forces attempting to work together. U.S. officials confirmed that there were American fatalities but did not disclose how many.

Can't say as I disagree with Herb (mariju@n@?) on this one. Bush declared victory and left, then the rest of the system forced us back in. We should learn from Britain's experience in the 19th century.

I only disagree on their lack of reasons for serving

I'm not 100% with Herb on this, but his comment raises a valid point: what exactly is our endgame in Afghanistan? Best case scenario is they become a semi-democracy as functional as, say, Pakistan that only hates us 60% of the time. It's not exactly a great return on our blood and treasure.

You want diverse opinions? Here is one that several at this "WOT" site won't like. Your Herb is lazy.
You want facts and not lazy opinions? Here are the facts:
We are not in a full fledged war in Afghanistan anu more, known by Islamic Radicals as "The Base". These casualties are in aiding the Afghan National Army in keeping the Taliban and ISIS and Al Qaeda from taking back a country a coalition of ~70 nations pushed out of Kabul, used as an attack base against the West. The major war was over several years ago.
Casualties from that war:
70,000 Afghan forces.
70,000 Al Qaeda, Taliban, ISIS
38,000 Afghan Civilians
3,000 Coalition forces.
All the above a rounded numbers.
Police officers KIA US 2020 fightong crime - 15.
Us Troops KIA Afghanistan Advisory Role against terror - 6.
Chances of Taliban taking back Kabul and rebuilding to kill as many as 3000 Americans again in one day in the US like they did in the US on 9/11 if we leave Afghanistan? Still very high.

No one else is Lex. I did not include the wounded in the above numbers.
That would put kia and wounded ratio heavily on radical Islam's favor of 2:1 or 3:1 their favor.
One radical just killed and or wounded 5 or 6 Us troops, radical Islamic success ratio 1:5/6 their favor. A dozen killed 3,000 Americans on 9/11 in the US, radical Islamic success ratio 3000:12 their favor. Real numbers don't lie.
The world refuses to attack Islam's ideology. Therefore, the savagery will continue for centuries more. Oh well! Lets Run! Per Herby.

These are my concerns, too, Varmint Splat1454 — happily you argue them better than I, so I’ve saved your comments here in my personal files for future reference.

[ToloNews] Officials from the Afghan Army’s 209 Shaheen Army Corps in northern Afghanistan said on Saturday that some areas that were vulnerable in terms of security in Chamtal district in Balkh province were cleared of the Taliban ...Arabic for students... in a week-long operation by the Afghan forces.
The operation, nicknamed "Shaheen 221," was conducted after a group of Taliban attacked security checkpoints in Chamtal district, killing a number of Afghan forces, according to two security officials in Balkh.
The Afghan National Army, the Afghan National Police and the National Directorate of Security ...the Afghan national intel agency... took part in this operation, the Shaheen Corps Commander Gen. Haibatullah Alizai said, adding that the operation will continue.
One of the main areas in Chamtal district that was retaken by security forces was Pul-e-Bangaala village, which has witnessed many festivities between Afghan forces and Taliban, he said.
"That area is the Pul-e-Bangala area, from where the Taliban were holding attacks on us," Gen. Alizai, said. "The area is cleared now."
Other operations, he said, are underway in Shor Tepa, Balkh, Zari Chamtal, Dawlat Abad, and Charbolak district in the northern province of Balkh.
It was expected that the conflicts would deescalate in winter, but experts said the war has intensified, especially in rural areas.
"The enemy cannot face the Afghan forces. They are escaping. We are in Chamtal and vulnerable areas of the district are cleared," Balkh Police Chief Colonel Mohammad Ajmal Faiz said.
According to Shaheen Army Corps, 11 Taliban fighters were killed in recent Arclight airstrike ...KABOOM!... s in the district, and spokespeople say the air raids have proved useful for military operations.
Balkh residents, meanwhile, claimed that civilians have been harmed in the government airstrikes, but they also said that security has improved in the district.
At least 11 civilians were killed in two separate attacks in Niger, which is struggling to contain a wave of extremist violence, according to officials.https://t.co/i5yg2LKPuE
In one attack on Friday, members of the extremist group Boko Haram killed six civilians in Bosso district in the southeast region of Diffa bordering Chad and Nigeria, a local official told AFP. Four members of the same family were among those killed, said the official. Officials in Bosso district confirmed the attack, but said five people had been killed.
In a separate attack in the southwestern region of Tillaberi, which borders Mali, four armed men on two motorbikes opened fire on workers in the village of Molia, killing four people, a regional official told AFP. That attack took place late on Thursday. The use of motorbikes is banned in the region.
Niger’s Diffa and Tillaberi regions are vulnerable to increasingly deadly incursions by the extremists based in northern Nigeria. According to an official toll, three attacks in December and January, all claimed by ISIS, have killed 174 soldiers. In January, officials in Tillaberi were forced to suspend voter registration in several towns because of the growing violence.
The first round of presidential elections, coinciding also with a legislative ballot, is scheduled for December 27 this year.
According to UN figures, extremist attacks in Burkina Faso, Mali and Niger left around 4,000 dead last year.
[Jpost] People are fleeing a surge of attacks in northern Mozambique where witnesses have described beheadings, mass kidnappings and villages burned to the ground, the United Nations ...an organization conceived in the belief that we're just one big happy world, with the sort of results you'd expect from such nonsense... said on Friday.
Officials said gangs had stepped up assaults in Cabo Delgado province, the center of an Islamist insurgency that has killed hundreds since it started in 2017.
The northern region is also home to one of the world's biggest recent gas finds, where Exxon Mobil Corp, Total and others are working.
Displaced villagers have described killings, maiming, torture and destroyed crops, Andrej Mahecic, the front man for the U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), said.
"They speak of men in particular being targeted and beheaded, and many, many reports of women and kiddies ... being kidnapped or simply disappearing," he told a briefing in Geneva.
Some of the attackers appeared to be bandidos. "But there is also the element of some of the groups being driven by ideological or other ideas. And they have been quite vicious ... in spreading the terror in this part of Mozambique," Mahecic added.
The UNHCR said there had been a sharp increase in violence in recent months, and the past weeks had been the most turbulent period since attacks began in October 2017. In all, 100,000 people have been uprooted by the violence in the last two years.
"In total, at least 28 attacks were carried out in the province since the beginning of the year," Mahecic said.
The forces of Evil - who tout their brand of Islam as an antidote to what they describe as a corrupt ruling elite - called themselves Ahlu Sunnah Wa-Jama when they started launching attacks in 2017.
...Ansar al-Sunna (Supporters of the tradition), known formally as “Ahlu Sunnah Wa-Jamo" (adepts of the prophetic tradition) and informally by the locals as Al Shabaab. Appearing in Mozambique in 2015, this particular Ansar al Sunna were originally followers of the radical Kenyan cleric Aboud Rogo, who was killed in 2012. They seem to be your standard takfiris, happily enforcing their Salafist rules on the surrounding populace. Apparently they hired members of Somali Al Shabaab to train them in jihading, then split into various cells. Ansar al-Sunna funds itself through heroin, contraband and the ivory trade.
More recently, Islamic State ...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that they were al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're really very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear western pols talk they're not really Moslems.... has grabbed credit via its media outlets, though there has been no independent confirmation of a link.

Peshawar is situated near the eastern end of the Khyber Pass, convenient to the Pak-Afghan border. Peshawar has evolved into one of Pakistain's most ethnically and linguistically diverse cities, which means lots of gunfire... 's Army Public School filed a petition with the Peshawar High Court on Saturday, seeking contempt of court proceedings against multiple government officials following reports of former TTP front manEhsanullah Ehsan ...formerly the front man for the Pak Taliban, then the lips and tongue of the Jamaatul Ahrar splinter group in Mohmand Agency... ’s escape from custody.
The petition, submitted by Shuhada APS Forum President Fazal Khan Advocate, said that the respondents, which include the army chief, the director general of the ISI, as well as the federal and provincial secretaries, had violated earlier orders of the PHC barring authorities from releasing Ehsan.
"Despite clear cut directions of this honourable court [...], now it has come to light that [a] luxurious home [was provided to Ehsan] from which the terrorist has made his escape: a fact not denied by the respondents," reads the petition, a copy of which is available with Dawn.com.
"The petitioner has been informed through reliable sources that clemency was in order of Ehsanullah Ehsan for his ’full and frank disclosure’ which is not only highly deplorable but also outrightly illegal and unconstitutional," the writ petition says, adding that the respondents had earlier assured the court that Ehsan would be tried by a military court and would not be granted clemency.

Corruption in Pakistan is so widespread (among the military, all ethnicities, in all provincial, state and city governments, from shops to stores, from Karachi to Peshawar and from Multan to the far reaches of Baluchistan) that not another dime should be sent in US foreign aid or military assistance. The policy then should be reviewed in the 22nd century.
I checked the date on the article, just in case, and it really is a new stand-off.
[DAWN] A tense environment prevailed on Saturday near the capital's Lal Masjid ...literally the Red Mosque, located in Islamabad and frequented by all sorts of high govt officials. The proprietors, Ghazi Abdul Rasheed and Maulana Abdul Aziz Ghazi, unleashed their Islamic storm troopers on the city, shutting down whorehouses and beating people up who weren't devout enough. The Musharraf govt put an end to the nonsense by besieging the place. Abdul Aziz Ghazi was nabbed while he was trying to escape dressed up like a girl. BBC reported that the corpse count at 173, but other claims, usually hysterical, say there were up to 1000 titzup. Among their number was Abdul Rashid Ghazi. Everyone then said tut-tut and what a nice guy he had been... , which has been occupied by its deposed khateeb Maulana Abdul Aziz ...nutball holy man who runs the Lal Masjid in the heart of Pakistain's capital. After instigating a rebellion against the state in 2007, he was caught trying to sneak away dressed in a burka. He rejects democracy as un-Islamic, which it probably is... , with the holy man's supporters chanting slogans amidst a heavy police presence.
Like during the previous two governments, Maulana Aziz is testing the nerves of the government by occupying the state-owned mosque for the past two weeks and reiterating his claim to be its prayer leader.
The standoff continued on Saturday, with the Maulana remaining holed up inside the mosque along with several female students. Police have cordoned off the area by placing barriers and barbed wires on the roads around the mosque.
With no solution in sight, both sides appeared to have adopted a strict posture, possibly to mount pressure on each other. The Islamabad assistant commissioner (AC) City was present outside the mosque today and discouraged interaction between police and the supporters of Maulana Aziz who continued to arrive at the site the whole day in a bid to cross the barricades.
