BEIJING (AP) ‐ Three researchers involved in the births of genetically edited babies have been convicted and sentenced for practicing medicine illegally, Chinese state media said Monday.
The report by Xinhua news agency said lead researcher He Jiankui was sentenced to three years and fined 3 million yuan ($430,000).
Two other people received lesser sentences and fines. Zhang Renli was sentenced to two years in prison and fined 1 million yuan. Qin Jinzhou received an 18-month sentence, but with a two-year reprieve, and a 500,000 yuan fine.
He, the lead researcher, shocked the scientific world when he announced in November 2018 that he had helped make the the world’s first genetically edited babies, twin girls born in the same month. He discussed the work in exclusive interviews with the AP.
The announcement sparked a global debate over the ethics of gene editing. He said he he had used a tool called CRISPR to alter a gene in embryos to try to help them resist infection with the AIDS virus.

The twin girls turned out to become potentially super smart somehow. And their brains exhibited supernormal cognitive abilities. Or so they're saying in China. Apparently he wasn't jailed for gene-editing to produce healthier babies; it's because he has unwittingly given them better brains.
[FOXNEWS] An Indiana woman who admitted to injecting fecal matter into her son's IV bag while he was undergoing cancer treatment was sentenced to seven years in prison Thursday.
Tiffany Alberts, 44, was also ordered to serve five years probation once she serves her sentence, Michael Leffler, a front man with the Marion County Prosecutor's Office, told Fox News. She was convicted in September of neglect and six counts of aggravated battery.
She was acquitted of attempted murder.
The Wolcott, Ind., mother was arrested in November 2016 after she was seen on surveillance video using a syringe to inject a substance into her 15-year-son's IV bag.
Hospital staff became suspicious after the teen developed more health problems.
The teen underwent chemotherapy treatment for leukemia in 2016 at the Riley Hospital for Children in Indianapolis. He developed blood infections and other ailments, including a fever, vomiting and diarrhea.
Blood tests revealed organisms commonly found in feces. Alberts argued her actions were an attempt to get her son moved to another hospital unit she felt would provide better care.
She initially told police she injected water into the IV bag to "flush the line" because his medicine "burned." Authorities said she later admitted to injecting fecal matter.
Doctors said the infections delayed the teen's treatment for two months, putting his health at risk, the Indianapolis Star reported.

Munchausen Syndrome by Proxy.
Mom felt neglected at home and wanted attention. Craved it. When her kid was sick, she got that attention and it made her feel *fabulous*. But when her kid started getting treatment, the attention went away. So she took action to make the attention come back.

This sounds great until you realize that ground transportation is 14 times more expensive than sea transportation, and that the US Navy rules the waves.
This whole Belt & Road nonsense is because China literally has no other choice. They are in an incredibly bad situation.

Every country has their designated cute (or otherwise) animal the lefties can hold up and wring their hands over whenever 'climate change ' & 'global warming' wreak their precious habitat. They no longer even have to bother explicitly mentioning either one, the message has become so ingrained.
[The National Interest] Key point: The fact is that Germany is the linchpin of Europe, and Europe is what keeps Russia in check.
President Trump’s goal of Europe taking more responsibility for its own defense may come crashing to Earth.
Because if Germany’s most advanced fighters can't even fly, then how the U.S. drawback on its European military commitments without undermining the Western security alliance?
The German magazine Spiegel recently revealed that most of the Luftwaffe’s‐the modern German air force’s‐128 Eurofighter Typhoons are not flightworthy.
In fact, only about ten of the aircraft are ready for operations, Spiegel said. This raises doubts about Germany’s ability to meet its NATO defense commitments.
"The problem is complicated," according to Spiegel.
"Put simply, all Eurofighters have a sensor on the wings that detects enemy jets or attacks and warns the pilot. About half a year ago, it was discovered that the pod is no longer properly cooled. Since it is central to the self-protection system and this must be active in all operational flights, the number of operational jets drops.
[Wash Times] President Trump began the holiday break by hosting an Amish delegation in the Oval Office, the first time members of the reclusive community have received that honor.
They might be an odd pairing ‐ the brash and extravagant billionaire president and the humble Amish ‐ but they enjoy a kinship in their Christian faith and work ethic, the Amish visitors told The Washington Times.
"He is a common man just like me and everybody else ‐ very common, very friendly. He called us friends when we walked in there," said Levi Miller, 56, an Amish farmer from Ohio. "It gets people excited that we have somebody in there who is not afraid to talk about Jesus Christ."

Yeah, you usually have to deal with someone holding a cross Das Kapital and sprinkling you with holy water Pierre in the previous administration or a gig today on CNN.
[Washington Examiner] Several audience members at Joe Biden's 2020 campaign rally in Milford, New Hampshire, lashed out at the former vice president, calling him a number of insults, including "pervert" and "quid pro Joe."
Biden, 77, was speaking on Sunday night ahead of the state's Feb. 11 Democratic primary, where he is trailing South Bend, Indiana, Mayor Pete Buttigieg and Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders, according to RealClearPolitics. A handful of those present interrupted the event on multiple occasions with heckles.
"Quite a start to Biden’s event in Milford, NH ‐ He was quickly interrupted near the top of his remarks by a protestor who called him "creepy" & made false claims about him being a "pervert," tweeted NBC News's Marianna Sotomayor. "Another woman then yelled "quid pro Joe" before another man began to shout about Ukraine."

I wish cancer on no one. I do however wish he would re-consider his decision to continue in his "mission". Better for all if he would just quietly spend his remaining time with family and friends.
What's wrong with this statement?
[DISM] Minister after Texas church shooting: "I'm thankful our government has allowed us the opportunity to protect ourselves"
For future archive searches, from Skidmark’s Daily Mail link in the comments:
Keith Thomas Kinnunen, 43, has been identified as the shooter in Sunday's attack
He opened fire on West Freeway Church but his motive remains unclear
Volunteer security guard Jack Wilson took the shooter down within six seconds
Anton 'Tony' Wallace, 64, was among two people killed on Sunday morning
Richard White, 67, was also killed; he was another volunteer security guard
He had just passed out communion when the gunman opened fire
Witnesses say Kinnunen was new at the church and that he was wearing 'fake sunglasses, a fake beard and a jacket with writing on the back'
Police will not confirm a motive but his sister claims it was the anniversary of their brother's suicide
She believes Keith was on his own suicide mission and thought he would get shot

The Pastor was referring to the Texas state government because in the last legislative session the removal of the prohibition against licensed carrying in churches, synagogues and other houses of worship was passed, and signed into law by Governor Abbott. Of course, former Presidential candidate O’Rourke and future former Presidential candidate Castro bemoaned the shooter’s inability to kill more innocents.

I would expect a Texas minister to be standing over the dead guy's body with a Magnum, barrel still smoking, then blowing the smoke out of the barrel like Bruce Willis at the end of Die Hard when McClane caps Hans Gruber and that guy who looks like Huey Lewis.

Democrat counties in Kansas were doing some real strange gun laws, so a state law was passed standardizing the state. Then we went Constitutional Carry, and there was much rejoicing.
