WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Three U.S. service members and an American contractor were killed in Afghanistan by an improvised explosive device on Monday, the NATO-led Resolute Support mission said in a statement.
Three U.S. service members were also wounded in the incident near Bagram air base close to Kabul, the statement said.
Violence has been relentless in Afghanistan even though Taliban militants have held several rounds of talks with U.S. officials about a peace settlement. The talks began late last year, raising hopes for an end to the conflict.
Colonel David Butler, a spokesman for U.S. Forces- Afghanistan, said a car bomb had detonated near the security convoy, which lead to deaths and injuries.
The Taliban claimed responsibility for the attack.
The latest deaths bring the number of U.S. service member deaths in Afghanistan to seven in 2019, and a total of 68 U.S. military deaths since January 2015, according to U.S. government and NATO reports.
[ToloNews] A foreign forces convoy was targeted by a boom-mobilekaboom near the Bagram Airbase in Parwan province at around 5:30pm on Monday, Bagram district governor Abdul Shakoor Qudoosi confirmed.
He said the attack happened near the third gate of the Bagram Airfield.
Qudoosi said the attack was carried out by an explosive-laden vehicle.
The foreign forces have cordoned off the area and there is no report on possible casualties, he said.
Taliban ...mindless ferocity in a turban... in a statement claimed the responsibility of the attack on and claimed that the suicide kaboomer destroyed two tanks and killed over 10 US military servicemen.
[ToloNews] The festivities in Bala Murghab district in the northwestern Badghis province entered their fifth day on Monday with reports of "heavy casualties" to murderous Moslems.
The festivities have so far displaced "thousands" of families according to local residents. Most of the families have settled in the center of Badghis and in Herat ...a venerable old Persian-speaking city in western Afghanistan, populated mostly by Tadjiks, which is why it's not as blood-soaked as areas controlled by Pashtuns... province.
According to Defense Ministry front man Qais Mangal, at least 100 Talibs have been killed and 35 others have been maimed in the festivities.
Residents and former MPs interviewed by TOLOnews said the situation is still "unstable" in Bala Murghab ‐ which is a strategic district in Badghis and shares borders with Turkmenistan.
However, man does not live by words alone, despite the fact that sometimes he has to eat them... the Acting Minister of Interior Massoud Andarabi at a gathering on Monday said "the situation is coming back to normal in Badghis" following "massive" air and ground operations by the Afghan forces.
Other politicians claimed that at least 250 military personnel have surrendered to the Taliban ...mindless ferocity in a turban... over the past five days as they came under pressure by the Taliban. The Ministry of Defense has rejected the claims as baseless.
The Taliban entered key parts of the district last week, including the police headquarters, which is close to the Army camp, where hundreds of forces are stationed. But they were pushed back after Arclight airstrikes conducted by Afghan forces in support of coalition troops.
The Ministry of Defense confirmed on Monday that at least 12 Afghan security force members were killed in the festivities.
"Bala Murghab is a strategic point from where Herat and Faryab provinces can be influenced," said Mirza Mohammad Yarmand, former Deputy Minister of Interior.
Bala Murghab is surrounded by some other volatile districts such as Ab Kamari, Muqur, Jawand and Qadis.
"It is a strategically important location, so it has strategic importance for the Taliban," said Abdul Basir Osmani, an MP.
A former MP from Badghis, Qazi Abdul Rahim, said the appointment of "corrupt" figures in security leadership of the provinces has led the district with the fate it faced today.
"They (security agencies) appoint ’smugglers, thieves and useless people’ as commanders or officials in the province and they cannot come together with the people," Rahim claimed.
Security officials still argue that the evacuation of the district was aimed at preventing further harm to civilians.
"We tried to protect the innocent people there to avoid casualties, so we had a tactical retreat from there to avoid harms to people’s lives and properties," said Mohammad Ibrahim Fazli, Commander of 2nd Brigade of Afghan National Army in Badghis.
Last time, Bala Murghab came under Taliban attack early in March and was under siege for more than two weeks, leaving more than two dozens of security forces dead and almost 28 of them gone missing.
This comes as the conflicts have intensified in different parts of the country with the arrival of the spring season ‐ which is deemed as a usual fighting season for murderous Moslems fighting the Afghan government forces.

[PULSE.NG] Salvadoran police said Monday they had struck a "heavy blow" against the Central American country's violent MS-13 gang, arresting 117 members for a raft of crimes from murder to extortion.
US President Donald Trump ...New York real estate developer, described by Dems as illiterate, racist, misogynistic, and what ever other unpleasant descriptions they can think of, elected by the rest of us as 45th President of the United States... has frequently pointed to the gang to justify his immigration policy, labelling it a danger to Americans and claiming many Salvadoran migrants colonists to the US are gang members.
Announcing the arrests, El Salvador's top police official Howard Cotto said those tossed in the slammer Drop the gat, Rocky, or you're a dead 'un! came from 11 separate MS-13 cells operating against businesses in downtown San Salvador.
Cotto said a complicating factor for El Salvador's anti-gang operations was that members of the feared gang operating in the capital lived elsewhere.
"They come from outside the capital to commit crimes," he said, claiming police "have managed to strike a heavy blow."
The charges against them include 16 homicides and extortion.
Trump has repeatedly threatened to pull US aid from El Salvador amid claims the government is not doing enough to counter the 70,000-member gang. Some 17,000 MS-13 members are in prison.
El Salvador's homicide rate of 51 per 100,000 inhabitants makes it one of the world's most violent countries outside of full-fledged conflict zones.

I wonder if there is a name for that. The phrase " deep-seated hatred for people who didn't practice Islam" seems a bit unwieldy.

[IsraelTimes] PLO official says Israel Prisons Service will not negotiate because of political pressure ahead of Election Day.
Some 150 Paleostinian security prisoners held in Israel’s Rimon and Ketziot prisons launched a hunger strike on Monday after talks to avert a strike collapsed, according to the Paleostinian Authority official Wafa news outlet.
The PLO’s Prisoners Affairs Commission said in a statement that talks over the past two days have failed, and that an initial group of 150 prisoners would begin going without food or water from Monday, according to Wafa.
Additional groups of prisoners in other prisons would join the strike "in the coming days," Wafa said.
The strike comes to protest the recent installation of cellphone jamming devices in the prison wards to stop prisoners from making calls on smuggled phones. Israel has also refused to allow family visits from Hamas, the well-beloved offspring of the Moslem Brotherhood,-ruled Gazoo.
A day earlier, on Sunday, prisoners called off a planned mass hunger strike after reporting progress in negotiations with prison officials, according to a Paleostinian Authority official.
[PRESSTV] Israel has given the co-founder of Hamas, a regional Iranian catspaw, resistance movement a six-month detention order without trial.
The 64-year-old, Hassan Yusef, who is also a member of the Paleostinian parliament, was given the administrative detention order Monday.
Yusef’s family condemned the Israeli decision.
"We condemn this decision. He suffers from diabetes and high blood pressure," his son Owais said.
According to the Paleostinian Prisoners' Club, Yusef was enjugged Please don't kill me! at his home in Beitunia near the West Bank city of Ramallah on April 2.
On April 2, Hamas condemned the arrest, calling him "one of the advocates of national unity supporting the resistance project."
"Sheikh Yusef will remain a torch for joint national action and a free voice for the people of Paleostine, who have not known peace and quiet under the most difficult circumstances," the statement read.
[Israel.Times] Guards at Jenin-area checkpoint find unregistered gun and 37-year-old man from nearby village concealed in trunk of woman’s car.
While attempting to drive through the Reihan Crossing in the northern West Bank, the woman was stopped by security officials, who were acting on a tip, police said.
She was asked to open the trunk of her car for inspection, but initially refused, claiming the latch was broken. A security officer opened the trunk despite her objections, finding inside the 37-year-old Paleostinian man from the town of Zabada, near Jenin, according to the Defense Ministry, which runs the crossing.
A further search of the woman’s car uncovered a loaded pistol, which the woman had without the proper permit, police said.
According to police, the gun appeared to have been stolen from a security guard for the Israel Nature and Parks Authority.
The woman, a resident of Gan Hashomron in central Israel, and the Paleostinian man were locked away Youse'll never take me alive coppers!... [BANG!]... Ow!... I quit!
Ynet adds that the woman is 26, so old enough to know better.
[IsraelTimes] The family of Paleostinian protester Ahed Tamimi ...the blond, blue-eyed Arab-Israeli maiden who along with siblings and young cousins in the boisterous village of Nabi Saleh has made a hobby of being filmed screaming at and physically attacking Israeli soldiers, urged on by well-known Fatah activist Bassem Tamimi, her papa... said Monday that her younger brother and cousin had been locked away Youse'll never take me alive coppers!... [BANG!]... Ow!... I quit! in an overnight raid of their central West Bank village.

Footage of Mohammad’s arrest posted by his mother Nariman to Facebook shows 18-year-old Ahed hugging her brother goodbye before shouting at the soldiers as they escorted him out of the home.
Come, dear Reader, let us weep sentimental tears over the poor, suffering lads who will be taking their turn to inhabit the family jail cell.
