Afghan and Pakistani forces exchanged fire in Goshta district of Nangarhar
[Khaama (Afghanistan)] The Afghan and Pak forces exchanged along the Durand Line for several hours starting late on Sunday afternoon, local officials in Nangarhar
The unfortunate Afghan province located adjacent to Mohmand, Kurram, and Khyber Agencies. The capital is Jalalabad. The province was the fief of Younus Khalis after the Soviets departed and one of his sons is the current provincial Taliban commander. Nangarhar is Haqqani country..
said.

The festivities erupted in Goshta district of Nangarhar province around 2:00 pm local time and reportedly continued for several hours.

According to the local officials, the exchange of fire erupted after the Pak militia forces attack Anarki area in Goshta district.

A member of the provincial council said the Afghn forces were forced to respond to the heavy fire by the Pak forces who were using light and heavy weapons, including artillery fire.

There are no reports if the festivities resulted to any death or injuries on the two sides with the main motive behind the clash yet to be ascertained.

Provincial governor front man Ataullah Khogyani confirmed the incident but he did not disclose further information in this regard.

This comes as a similar incident took place between the Afghan and Pak forces along the Durand Line earlier last year.

Local officials in Kandahar province said the festivities between the two sides broke out after Afghan border police forces stopped the Pak troops to create check posts inside the Afghan soil.

Steep rise in Afghan army casualties, 26 soldiers martyred in past 3 days
[Khaama (Afghanistan)] There has been a steep rise in Afghan National Army (ANA) forces casualties during the recent days as the Ministry of Defense (MoD) reported at least 26 deaths in the past 3 days.

According to the earlier estimates by security officials, the Afghan army deaths stood at 4 service members daily on average which is mainly caused due to improvised bomb (IED) attacks.

Weapons seized by Australia may have come from Iran, intended for Houthis
[CNN] An Australian naval ship has seized a large arms cache that may have come from Iran and headed to Yemen
...an area of the Arabian Peninsula sometimes mistaken for a country. It is populated by more antagonistic tribes and factions than you can keep track of. Except for a tiny handfull of Jews everthing there is very Islamic...
by way of Somalia.

The Australian Navy said that one of its ships patrolling the region, the HMAS Darwin, intercepted a small, stateless fishing vessel about 170 nautical miles off the coast of Oman when it made the discovery.

On board they found more than 2,000 pieces of weaponry -- including 1,989 AK-47 assault rifles and 100 rocket-propelled grenades.

According to a U.S. assessment, the weapons were believed to be initially sent from Iran and were likely intended for Houthi
...a Zaidi Shia insurgent group operating in Yemen. They have also been referred to as the Believing Youth. Hussein Badreddin al-Houthi is said to be the spiritual leader of the group and most of the military leaders are his relatives. The Yemeni government has accused the Houthis of having ties to the Iranian government, which wouldn't suprise most of us. The group has managed to gain control over all of Saada Governorate and parts of Amran, Al Jawf and Hajjah Governorates. Its slogan is God is Great, Death to America™, Death to Israel, a curse on the Jews ...
rebels in Yemen, Lt. Ian McConnaughey with the U.S. Navy told CNN.

U.S. Central Command is still gathering more information to determine the arms' final destination, McConnaughey said.

An Australian Defense Ministry front man told CNN there were 18 people of various nationalities on board the ship, but officials could not initially confirm that their identification documents were valid.

Authorities believe the weapons were headed for Somalia based on interviews with crew members, but that information is preliminary and may change as the investigation continues, the front man said.

The crew was allowed to depart after the weapons were seized, in accordance with international maritime law.

U.S. claims to have killed 150 fighters from Al-Shabaab in Somalia
[CNN] In a move to stop what the U.S. military said was an imminent threat against U.S. troops and African peacekeeping forces in Somalia, a U.S. strike in Somalia killed as many as 150 suspected Al-Shabaab
... Somalia's version of the Taliban, functioning as an arm of al-Qaeda...
fighters, the Pentagon said Monday.

The Pentagon initially characterized the attack as a drone strike, but later clarified that the operation involved both manned and unmanned aircraft.

The strike took place Saturday, 120 miles north of Mogadishu at a training site called "Raso Camp," according to Pentagon front man Capt. Jeff Davis.

The camp had been under observation by U.S. Special Operations forces for several weeks, Davis said. The camp had about 200 fighters on site including Al-Shabaab trainers.

Separately, a U.S. official told CNN that the Al-Shabaab fighters were standing outside in military formation when the strike occurred.

Intelligence indicated the group was training for some time and was in the final stages of getting ready to conduct a "large-scale attack," Davis said.

Pentagon front man Peter Cook said in a statement that the attack was taken in defense of "our African Union
...a union consisting of 53 African states, most run by dictators of one flavor or another. The only all-African state not in the AU is Morocco. Established in 2002, the AU is the successor to the Organisation of African Unity (OAU), which was even less successful...
Mission" in Somalia and that "The fighters who were scheduled to depart the camp posed an imminent threat" to the mission.

He added, "The removal of these fighters degrades al-Shabaab's ability to meet the group's objectives in Somalia, including recruiting new members, establishing bases, and planning attacks" on U.S. and African Union forces.

The military did not specify the location of where the U.S. thought an attack might happen, but it is well known that the U.S. maintains a limited military presence at the airport in Mogadishu and that small numbers of U.S. Special Operations forces have traveled to other locations in the country.
An account from Shabelle is here.

Misratan planes attack Sirte
Aircraft are reported to have struck IS targets in Sirte today, inflicting heavy casualties.

Jamal Zubia, head of the Ghwell administration’s foreign media department said IS headquarters had been bombed by aircraft from Misrata. “Many leaders are believed to have been hit, 18 are claimed dead and there have been many casualties.”

He added that IS had been evacuating medical equipment from the town’s Ibn Sina hospital to set up a field hospital, in anticipation of further attacks.

However at least two different sources inside the town have said that the airstrike did not hit any IS targets but struck civilian areas, where one local was killed.

Meanwhile it is also being reported from Sirte that IS have demanded that everyone in the town brings their children to their local mosque for lessons on sharia and missionary work.

Tunisia: 36 militants killed after attack on barracks
[CNN] At least 36 bandidos snuffies were killed in festivities after an attack on a military barracks near Tunisia's border with Libya, Tunisia's interior ministry said Monday.

Seven "terrorists" were also tossed in the clink

after the attack in the town of Ben Gardane, the ministry statement said.

The ministry earlier said 17 people -- including seven civilians, six members of the national guard, two coppers, one soldier, and one customs official -- were killed, but a later statement gave a total of 18, without indicating if the new fatality was a civilian or a member of the military.

Security forces are chasing "the groups," and entrances to Ben Gardane have been secured, the government said.

Air patrols in the area around the border have also intensified, and the main crossings with Libya -- Ras Ajdir and Dheiba -- have been closed.

Authorities have asked residents in Ben Gardane to stay indoors and report any suspicious activity.

Assistant Sub-Inspector Ali Ahmed was on duty at a checkpost when men on a motorcycle opened fire at him.

35 Killed Clearing Bombs in Ramadi in Two Months
[An Nahar] Three Iraqi fighters died Monday trying to defuse bombs left behind by the jihadists in Ramadi, as the toll taken by the huge mine-clearing effort there continued to rise.

The victims were three local tribal fighters killed by the kaboom of improvised devices they were attempting to defuse, Anbar province governor Sohaib al-Rawi said.

He said the danger posed by unwent kaboom! bombs and booby-traps remained an obstacle to the return of Ramadi's residents.

The local government "understands the pressing need for IDPs (internally displaced persons) to return home, but we will not allow a chaotic return resulting in more casualties," he said on social media.

"We have lost more than 35 members of the security forces and sons of the tribes (tribal fighters) this year," Hamid al-Dulaimi told AFP.

"As of yesterday, we had a toll of 15 deaths in our ranks alone," said Omar Khamis al-Dulaimi, a big shot in the tribal fighters working alongside federal forces.

Ramadi was declared liberated when Iraqi forces wrested the main government compound back from the Islamic State

Laying thousands of bombs and booby-trapping buildings was the backbone of IS' defense of the city last year.

"The destruction is enormous, people are still being killed by IEDs and mines that have been left by Daesh [Islamic State] (IS)," the US envoy to the coalition, Brett McGurk, said on Saturday during a visit to Baghdad.

"We're very focused now on the counter-IED (improvised bomb) mission," he said.

Israeli forces arrested three Turkish nationals who had crossed into Israel from Jordan overnight Sunday, police announced Monday. IDF soldiers first spotted the three men and signaled to Border Police officers to investigate, the police said in a statement.

Police fanned out on a stretch of Arava Valley road that runs parallel to the border to nab the three, an Israel Police front man said. The men were found near the Grofit Kibbutz, just outside of Eilat, and taken to the southern city for questioning.

In the West Bank, Israeli security forces arrested 14 Paleostinians overnight.

Of them, 12 were arrested for so-called "popular terrorism" -- Molotov cocktail and rock throwing or participation in violent demonstrations. The other two were arrested for undisclosed reasons, the IDF said. Five of the Paleostinians who were arrested came from the Qalandiya refugee camp, where last week a violent clash broke out between IDF troops and local Paleostinians when a pair of soldiers accidentally entered the camp.

The firefight that erupted in Qalandiya left one Paleostinian dead, 10 Israeli soldiers injured and dozens of Paleostinians maimed.

[IsraelTimes] Brother and sister Medhat and Shireen Issawi to be imprisoned for eight and four years, respectively

Two East Jerusalem lawyers were handed prison sentences on Monday for relaying messages between Paleostinian terrorist groups in Gazoo and security detainees in Israeli prisons.

Medhat Issawi, 42, and his sister Shireen Issawi, 37, were sentenced to eight and four years, respectively, by the Jerusalem District Court.

The lawyers allegedly transmitted instructions for hunger strikes and details of prisoner releases, and were paid NIS 500-700 ($144-$200) per message. Some of the communications were conveyed to Hamas and Islamic Jihad operatives abroad.

HASAKAH – U.S.-led coalition on Monday renewed its airstrikes on headquarters of the Islamic State (ISIS) extremist group in Syria’s northeastern Hasakah province, killing a number of militants and destroying several ISIS vehicles.

American fighter jets hit ISIS positions in the town of Markadah in southern Hasakah with several strikes.

“At least twenty ISIS militants were killed in the airstrikes, including the prominent jihadi leader Hussam al-Shallouf,” rights activist Salman Malla Rashid told ARA News in Hasakah. The source added that over five ISIS vehicles were destroyed in the raids.

Al-Shallouf, a Syrian member of ISIS, was responsible for torturing and beheading anti-ISIS activists in Markadah.

“This man had tortured and killed hundreds of people accused of violating ISIS regulations in the town,” Rashid reported, citing eyewitnesses and officials.

In the meantime, clashes continued between ISIS militants and western-backed Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) in Markadah suburbs.

Supported by an air cover form the U.S.-led coalition, Kurdish-Arab alliance of the SDF has recently recaptured the city of Shaddadi, major ISIS bastion in Hasakah province. Last week, the SDF announced the start of the battle for Markadah.

7 die in bomb attack on Kurd held Qamishli
QAMISHLI – An explosion hit the Kurdish city of Qamishli in northeastern Syria on Monday, causing casualties among civilians. An explosive device was detonated in front of the Kindi Park in the crowded Quwatli street in central Qamishli, causing the injury of at least seven people.

Local sources confirmed that the injured were transferred to Qamishli’s national hospital subsequent to the attack, while the Kurdish Asayish security forces evacuated the location of the bombing and surrounded the area.

The Asayish leadership said in a statement that the blast took place when an explosive device left by terrorists was detonated “in a bid to kill innocent civilians and terrorize the people”.

Kurdish activists accused the radical group of Islamic State (ISIS) of being behind the attack.

ISIS has been engaged in clashes with Kurdish YPG troops in the countryside of Qamishli in the last few months, before the Kurdish fighters were able to expel the militants from the southern suburb of Qamishli with support from the western coalition’s air forces. Since then, ISIS has been accused of conducting a series of suicide attacks and car bombings in Qamishli and its countryside.

Nusra, Allies Advance on Regime-Held Northern Hilltops
[An Nahar] Al-Qaeda's Syria affiliate and allied jihadists advanced on a set of strategic hilltops held by pro-regime forces in the north on Monday, a monitoring group said.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said the forces of Evil battled government loyalists and briefly seized one of three hilltops in the Al-Eis area south of Aleppo city.

"The pro-government fighters pushed them back, but there are still fierce festivities as the fighters from al-Nusra

The jihadists detonated five boom-mobiles during their offensive.

"The hilltops are important because they reinforce the regime's presence in the outskirts of Aleppo and gave them a presence near the main highway south towards Damascus," Abdel Rahman said.

Aleppo province is broken up into a complex patchwork of territories under various groups.

Government forces based south of Aleppo city have tried to expand their control north and east.

Further west in Idlib province, at least 12 people were killed in an air strike believed to have been conducted by either Russian or regime planes, the Observatory reported.

The raid struck a diesel market in the town of Abu Duhur, controlled by a coalition of groups including al-Nusra.

"At least three of those killed were identified as civilians, but the rest were so badly burned that they were not identified," Abdel Rahman told AFP.

Monday was the tenth day of a landmark ceasefire across parts of the country brokered by the United States and Russia.

Hassan Yaaqoub's Brother Arrested at Airport
[An Nahar] The brother of former MP Hassan Yaaqoub was locked away

at Rafik Hariri International Airport on Monday against the backdrop of the kidnapping of Hannibal Qadaffy, the state-run National News Agency reported.

NNA said Hussein Yaaqoub was apprehended based on a judicial arrest warrant.

The former politician was arrested in December and charged for his involvement in the kidnapping of Hannibal Qadaffy, the son of slain Libyan leader Muammar Qadaffy
...whose instability was an inspiration to dictators everywhere, but whose end couldn't possibly happen to them...
Hannibal was kidnapped in a Syrian area near the Lebanese border on December 11 before being smuggled into Leb's Bekaa region. He was handed over hours later to Lebanese security forces.

Lebanese authorities have charged Hannibal with withholding information about the disappearance of revered Shiite holy man and founder of the AMAL Movement Moussa al-Sadr, who vanished in Libya in 1978 along with two companions.

The Yaaqoub brothers are the sons of Sheikh Mohammed Yaaqoub -- one of the two companions who disappeared with al-Sadr in Libya.

NNA said Monday that their mother Sheikha Imthal was hospitalized following the arrest of her son at the airport.

She was taken to Hotel Dieu Hospital's emergency unit after complaining of chest pain and partial paralysis in her arm as a result of her shock, NNA added.

Air strike hits Syrian market, opposition says truce must be respected
[REUTERS] A Syrian or Russian air strike was reported to have killed at least a dozen people and possibly many more at a market in northwestern Syria on Monday, straining a cessation of hostilities agreement meant to pave the way for peace talks.

In a further upsurge in violence, al Qaeda's Nusra Front and other Islamist Lions of Islam not included in the U.S.-Russian agreement attacked government forces in a neighbouring province, a monitoring group said.

The agreement, accepted by Hereditary President-for-Life Bashir Pencilneck al-Assad
The Scourge of Hama...
's government and most of his enemies, has reduced violence in Syria since it took effect on Feb 27, the first truce of its kind in a 5-year-old war that has killed more than 250,000 people and caused the world's worst refugee crisis.

Foreign powers hope the pause in fighting can lead to peace talks to end the conflict. But the agreement, which has not been directly signed by the Syrian warring parties and is less binding than a formal ceasefire, is very fragile and each side has accused the other of breaking it.

Terror Networks
Ex-Guantanamo prisoners suspected of rejoining militants increases
[Reuters] The number of former Guantanamo Bay prison inmates who are suspected of having returned to fighting for militants doubled to 12 in the six months through January, the Obama administration said on Monday.

The increase could fuel Republican attacks on Democratic President Barack Obama's plan to close the U.S. military prison in Cuba, which has come to symbolize aggressive detention practices following the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks and opened the United States to accusations of torture. Most detainees have been held without trial for more than a decade.

The closure plan, drawn up by the Pentagon and which requires approval by Congress, proposes 13 potential sites on U.S. soil to hold 30-60 detainees in maximum-security prisons.

According to figures released by the Office of the Director of National Intelligence (ODNI), as of Jan. 15 the United States also had confirmed that seven out of 144 Guantanamo prisoners who were freed since Obama took office in January 2009 have returned to fighting.

The Combined Joint Task Force, in a statement released on Monday, said it had staged a dozen strikes against the forces of Evil in Iraq. Its efforts near 10 cities hit five tactical units as well as numerous fighting positions and an Islamic State headquarters, it said.

In Syria, the task force conducted six strikes near three cities, hitting five tactical units as well as five vehicles, among other targets, the US-led coalition said.

These Special Ops transports hide in plain sight
[The Week] December, the Libyan air force inadvertently exposed a secretive U.S. Wolfhound transport plane on a runway. The passengers -- American commandos -- had arrived in the country for a covert meeting with the Libyan army. "While in Libya, members of a local militia demanded that the U.S. personnel depart," a Pentagon spokesperson told The Guardian after photos of the soldiers spread online. "In an effort to avoid conflict, they did leave, without incident."

But the mission was only a glimpse at a fleet of transport planes with far greater reach -- and which stays far busier -- than previously thought. An official history of the U.S. Air Force's 27th Special Operations Wing in 2013 shows these aircraft and their cousins operate well beyond North Africa and the Middle East.

War Is Boring obtained the heavily redacted copy of the history through the Freedom of Information Act.

The historical review describes more than 10,000 secretive missions on five continents that year, including everything from shuttling around commandos to delivering humanitarian aid. All three types of aircraft carried civilian style paint schemes -- generally white with various colored stripes -- and registration codes to help conceal their true identities.

At that time, the wing's 318th Special Operations Squadron was flying a combination of small, single engine PC-12 utility planes and slightly larger twin-engine C-145A Skytruck cargo haulers. The 524th Special Operations Squadron owned all of the flying branch's Wolfhounds -- as it does to this day.

For decades now, the Air Force has flown secretive missions around in the world in unmarked aircraft. Since at least the 1990s, the super secret 427th Special Operations Squadron has maintained a collection of similarly discreet aircraft.

#1  ...When I was stationed at Langley AFB VA in the late 80s, I was surprised to see a Lockheed L-100 (civilian C-130) show up on a regular basis. I mentioned it once, was gently taken aside and then told that if I ever mentioned it again, I could probably count on being thrown out of said aircraft. at altitude.

Belonged to the good folks at Southern Air Transport....
