19 Killed in Attack at Tunisia Museum; 2 Gunmen Dead After Firefight
[NYTIMES] Gunmen in military uniforms attacked a museum in downtown Tunis around noon on Wednesday, killing 19 people, officials said. Security forces later advanced into the museum and killed two gunnies in a firefight, state television
... and if you can't believe state television who can you believe?
reported.

Prime Minister Habib Essid said at a news conference that the dead included 17 tourists and two Tunisians. Eight people were killed as they got off a bus to visit the museum, according to an Interior Ministry front man; 10 more were taken hostage and then killed. State television reported that a Tunisian museum guard who was injured in the attack and died later of his wounds.

The prime minister said that 22 more people were maimed in the attack.

Local media reports said that it was possible a third gunman was involved and was still on the lam, and that there were possibly other accomplices as well. Tunisian authorities said at midafternoon that the operation to retake the museum was continuing and was nearly complete.

Chris Stephen, outside the Bardo museum, sends this account of the end of the siege:

A single muffled detonation signalled the end of the Bardo Museum siege in Tunis, with reports filtering through crowds gathered outside the gates in the bright sunshine that the attackers were dead.

White ambulances with lights flashing drove in a slow convoy inside the gardens of the palace grounds. Minutes later police pushed open the big iron entrance gates and black armoured vehicles of the special forces, their task seemingly complete, came out, inching through the crowds pressing in outside. The spectators burst into cheering and applause and a black-clad helmeted soldier peering from the turret of one vehicle punched the air with both fists in response.

Relief that the siege was over was mixed with dismay among those watching. “This is a black day for Tunisia,” said Karim Ben Sa’a, a manager in the tourism industry. “We are very sad for these tourists. They visit our country and it is so, so, sad to see them die. Our hearts are black.”

Elsewhere in Tunis there was shock and dismay that terrorists had managed to launch an attack at the very heart of the capital, at a museum that shares the Bardo palace complex with the national parliament. Police set up checkpoints and a policeman with a machine gun was posted outside the office of the British Council.

Libyan clashes leave top ISIL commander dead
[Iran Press TV] One of Tunisia's most wanted forces of Evil and a top commander of the ISIL terrorist group has died during fighting in a coastal city in Libya, an official confirms.

The death of ISIL field commander Ahmed al-Rouissi has been confirmed through "scientific means" which were carried out in coordination with Libyan authorities, Tunisia's Interior Ministry front man Mohammed Ali Aroui told media on Tuesday.

The ISIL holy warrior was killed during recent festivities between the terrorist group and Tripoli
...a confusing city, one end of which is located in Lebanon and the other end of which is the capital of Libya. Its chief distinction is being mentioned in the Marine Hymn...
-allied fighters, the Misrata-based 166th Battalion, around Libya's coastal city of Sirte.

A separate confirmation of his death was posted in a eulogy on the terrorist group's website.

Libya has two rival camps vying for control of the country, with one controlling Tripoli, and the other, Libya's internationally recognized government, governing the cities of Bayda and Tobruk.

Rouissi was considered the criminal mastermind behind a series of attacks in Tunisia, which were led by the Salafi terrorist group, Ansar al-Sharia
...a Salafist militia which claims it is not part of al-Qaeda, even though it works about the same and for the same ends. There are groups of the same name in Libyaand Yemen, with the Libyan versions currently most active. Tunisia's Shabaab al-Tawhid started out an Ansar al-Sharia and changed its name in early 2014. It still uses the old name now and then, probably because the stationery's not all used up and the web site hasn't expired yet...
, including the 2013 liquidations of politicians, Chokri Belaid and Mohammed Brahmi.

Africa Subsaharan
Nigeria begins 'final onslaught' against Boko Haram before polls
[Iran Press TV] Nigeria says it has embarked on a "final onslaught" against Boko Haram
... not to be confused with Procol Harum, Harum Scarum, possibly to be confused with Helter Skelter. The Nigerian version of al-Qaeda and the Taliban rolled together and flavored with a smigeon of distinctly Subsaharan ignorance and brutality...
Takfiri
...an adherent of takfir wal hijra, an offshoot of Salafism that regards everybody who doesn't agree with them as apostates who must be killed...
bandidos bully boyz ahead of the presidential polls slated for March 28.

"Soldiers are still out there working hard and we're en route to the final onslaught because it has started already from Bama" in Borno state, Nigeria's government front man, Mike Omeri, was quoted as saying on Tuesday.

"Bama was retaken yesterday and we have Abadam, Gwoza and Askira as part of the remaining areas where we still have this presence," Omeri added.

He also said that "significant strategic military successes and gains" have been made against the Takfiri bandidos bully boyz in recent weeks, adding, "As for the other three areas, help is coming."

The comments came after Nigeria's northeastern states of Adamawa and Yobe were recaptured on March 13 and 16.

Bama has been under the control of the bandidos bully boyz since early September when it was seized along with several towns and villages in Borno, Adamawa and Yobe states on the border with Chad, Cameroon
...a long, narrow country that fills the space between Nigeria and Chad on the northeast, CAR to the southeast. Prior to incursions by Boko Haram nothing ever happened there...
and Niger.

Last week, Omeri (pictured below) announced that a total of 36 towns had been recaptured from Boko Haram.

The states of Adamawa, Borno and Yobe have been the core of six years of Boko Haram violence, which has claimed over 13,000 lives and displaced a further 1.5 million people since 2009.

In May 2013, all three states were put on a state of emergency while troops and civilian forces pushed the bandidos bully boyz out of urban centers into remote rural areas.

In November 2014, Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan
... 14th President of Nigeria. He was Governor of Bayelsa State from 9 December 2005 to 28 May 2007, and was sworn in as Vice President on 29 May 2007. Jonathan is a member of the ruling People's Democratic Party (PDP). He is a lover of nifty hats, which makes him easily recognizable unless someone else in the room is wearing a neat chapeau...
tried to extend the state of emergency for a third time but the country's parliament blocked his move.

Boko Haram, whose name means "Western education is forbidden," and controls part of the northeastern Nigeria, recently declared allegiance to the ISIL Takfiri group which is perpetrating heinous crimes against humanity in areas under its control in Iraq, Syria, and Libya.

Nigerian troops backed by soldiers from Chad, Niger and Cameroon have been carrying out operations in recent months to secure and stabilize the northeast before the country's presidential vote.

The vote, which was initially scheduled for February 14, was postponed to March 28 due to concerns over security on polling day.

Omeri said at a separate news conference, "We are confident there will be a level of security to enable citizens to vote."

Europe
Serbia, Albania put 14 suspected terrorists on trial
[Iran Press TV] Fourteen men have gone on trial in the European nations of Serbia and Albania over accusations of recruiting and financing people to fight alongside terrorist groups in Syria.

A court in Serbia has held the country's first such trial on Tuesday involving five defendants accused of terrorism charges for recruiting and providing financial support to volunteers to fight in Syria.

The five accused are suspected of having "organized and financed the departure of Serbian citizens as well as people from other countries to camps for terrorist training in Syria and later to conflict zones," according to the prosecutor.

One of the defendants assisted recruits in their travel from the Turkish city of Istanbul to training camps in Syria, while another helped them obtain training in the Syrian town of Azaz.

If found guilty of the terrorism charges, the five face up to 10 years in prison.

#5  I thought I remembered that tortoiseshell cats are exclusively female, so I checked. According to Wikipedia, I am wrong. To whit:

Very rarely (approximately 1 in 3,000[9]) a male tortoiseshell or calico is born. These animals typically have an extra X chromosome (XXY), a condition known in humans as Klinefelter syndrome, and undergo an inactivation process like that in females. As in humans, these cats often are sterile because of the imbalance in sex chromosomes. Some male calico or tortoiseshell cats may be chimeras, which result from the fusion in early development of two embryos with different color genotypes. Others are mosaics, in which the XXY condition arises after conception and the cat is a mixture of cells with different numbers of X chromosomes.

Once again I've learnt something useful from one of Zenobia F's deceptively clever little limericks -- it seems he's to poetry what JosephMendiola is to prose.

#7  Had a classic medium-haired tuxedo cat that wondered off to the dark side for a month. One Subday afternoon I watched a horrific looking cat stagger down the road towards me, my youngest asked with a hint of awe in his voice, "Sir is that a cat?" My only response could be,"You're damn straight that's a cat" and suddenly all I could hear was Bill Conti.

Took her to the vet for liquids and de-fleeing. BT the time she was back home (and back in charge) she was a classic tortoiseshell for a few years.

on Jan. 16 and faces a maximum 35 years in prison if convicted of attempting to provide material support to a foreign terrorist organization.

A federal grand jury in Brooklyn indicted him on both counts and he is scheduled to appear before a magistrate Wednesday. His attempt to join Syrian gunnies came weeks after he was sacked from his most recent job as an airplane mechanic based in the Middle East, federal prosecutors said in Brooklyn.

He served previously in the US Air Force as an instrument specialist and was trained in aircraft engine, navigation and weapons systems maintenance, the prosecutors said.

US reports said Pugh served in the US Air Force from 1986 to 1990. "Born and raised in the US, Pugh allegedly turned his back on his country and attempted to travel to Syria in order to join a terrorist organization," said US Attorney Loretta Lynch.

India-Pakistan
Solicitor of imprisoned Paki Dr. Shakil Afridi now Tango Uniform
[Right Scoop] A Pakistani lawyer under death threats for defending a doctor who helped CIA agents hunt al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden was shot dead on Tuesday, police said, and two militant groups claimed responsibility.

Samiullah Afridi represented Dr Shakil Afridi, who was jailed in 2012 for 33 years for running a fake vaccination campaign believed to have helped the U.S. intelligence agency track down bin Laden. That sentence was overturned in 2013 and the doctor is now in jail awaiting a new trial.
.....as well as a new lawyer.
Samiullah Afridi was shot dead on Tuesday as he was returning to his home in the northwestern city of Peshawar, police said. According to media, he had recently returned there from abroad after leaving Pakistan for his safety.

"He was returning home when armed men opened fire. He died on the spot," police official Jamal Hussain said. A hospital spokesman added that Samiullah Afridi was shot twice, in the abdomen and the neck.
No one in Afridi's protective detail was injured. Oh, there was no protective detail ?
Two Pakistan militant groups claimed responsibility for the lawyer's death. Jundullah, a Taliban splinter group, said: "We killed him because he was defending Shakil, who is our enemy."

A Taliban faction, Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan Jamaatul Ahrar (TTP-JA), later said it had shot him. "Dr Shakil Afridi had spied on our respected and supreme leader Sheikh Osama to the CIA," TTP-JA spokesman Ehsanullah Ehsan said.
....or so the story goes.

[RUDAW.NET] Dressed in green and carrying a heavy rifle, Yazan al-Jabouri paced along the front line on the fringes of Saddam Hussein's hometown of Tikrit, anxiously awaiting a plan of attack.

For months, al-Jabouri lived in fear of crossing paths with a fighter from the Islamic State

group (IS/ISIS) stormed several churches and Christian graveyards in the city of djinn-infested Mosul
... the home of a particularly ferocious and hairy djinn...
, in Nineveh province of northern Iraq, and removed all crosses from the tops of the churches and the halls, replacing them with the black flag of the radical group, local sources reported on Tuesday.

Speaking to ARA News in Mosul, Abu Tawfiq, a resident of Mosul, said that IS snuffies smashed hundreds of crosses and headstones of the Christian graves.

"They (IS Lion of Islams) deformed precious wall paintings and stole rare masterpieces. They confiscated several golden monuments from the churches in the city," Tawfiq said.

Under the banner of demolishing infidel symbols from the city, the radical group released pictures of its members smashing crosses at the tops of churches and tombstones in the Christian graveyard of Mosul.

Last year, the IS hardline group had cracked crosses in churches of Tel Abyad (Gire Spi) in Raqqa province, in northeastern Syria, turning them into headquarters.

#2  When it looks like Allah is removing his approval of his beloved ones, best to display increased piety in the way He likes best. The next step is removing the polluting Christians themselves, both living and dead, of course.

#3  And this is why it was stupid to announce Iraq would take Mosul back, and the timeline. Walked back, but too late. Now they're on a time limit to destroy everything ASAP.

Syrian conflict: Gas attack 'by regime' kills six, activists say
[ABC.NET.AU] Six people, including three young children, have been killed in an alleged regime gas attack in north-western Syria, a monitoring group and opposition activists say.

The attack prompted outrage from rights group Amnesia Amnesty International, which said it was further evidence of regime "war crimes".

"Three children, their mother and father, and their grandmother suffocated to death after regime barrel kabooms" on their village in Idlib province, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said.

Syria claims to have shot down a US reconnaissance aircraft
[FOXNEWS] Syria's state news agency says the country's air defense forces have shot down a U.S. reconnaissance aircraft.

SANA says the aircraft was downed Tuesday north of the coastal city of Latakia. It provided no further details.

State television broadcast footage of what it said was the wreckage, including a wheel and electronic parts. Soldiers in camouflage could be seen loading some of the debris into the back of a truck.

U.S. officials said they were looking into the reports.

If confirmed, this would be the first American aircraft to go down over Syria since the U.S. began its aerial campaign against Islamic Death Eaters there in September.

group (IS/ISIS) in the town of Tirbespi (Qahtaniya) of Hasakah Province, northeastern Syria, military sources reported on Tuesday.

The Asayish Media Center (MC) issued a statement, of which ARA News received a copy, saying that they arrested the two "mercenaries" immediately upon getting accurate intelligence of their links with IS terrorist group, saying they were transferring fuel to the group near Tirbespi.

"The Asayish forces have been informed about the existence of an IS-linked vehicle transferring fuel from the Kurdish areas to the terrorist group," the Asayish MC added. "Following constant surveillance, we were able to discover the two truck drivers and confiscate their vehicles which were filled with fuel, before reaching their destination in an IS-held area near the town of Tirbespi."

According to the Asayish leadership, the detainees, who were identified as members of a terrorist cell, have confessed having direct contacts with the IS group and transferring fuel as well as intelligence information about the Kurdish military movements in the area to the radical group.

Speaking to ARA News in Tirbespi, Shyar Hassan, an Asayish member, said that their forces have intensified security measures at checkpoints of Tirbespi to prevent possible infiltrations of IS-lined sleeper cells into the region, which has seen several suicide kabooms and attempts to plant explosives in the past few months.
