Shaboobs whack 10 soldiers on Army military base
At least 15 people were killed and more others injured on Friday after Al Shabaab militants attacked on a military base outside Baidao, the provincial capital of Bay, witnesses said.
I think a renewed emphasis on perimeter security is in order...
A witness said that heavily armed Al Shabab fighters launched an ambush attack against Isku-darka military base, situated 5km from Baidoa, killing at least 10 Somali soldiers during the raid.

Somalia military official told Shabelle that its forces killed more than 4 militants, adding that 10 of their side were killed by Al Shabaab ambush against on Isku-darka military camp on Friday morning.

The wounded from the ambush attack were immediately rushed to Baidoa hospital for medical treatment, a witness told Shabelle Media in Mogadishu by phone from the battle zone near Baidoa.

Baidoa, a town just situates 256 kilometers northwest of Mogadishu is under control of Somalia National Army forces along with AU forces from Uganda and Burundi.

At least 20 Egyptian Christians kidnapped in Libya
Masked gunmen in central Libya kidnapped 13 Coptic Christians on Saturday after seven were abducted days earlier, said a witness and a priest, in a new wave of assaults against Egypt’s Christians working in the war-torn North African nation plagued with extremists.

Witness Hanna Aziz said that the gunmen in the Libyan city of Sirte went room to room in their residence at 2.30am on Saturday and asked for identification papers to separate Muslim workers from Christians. Aziz says the gunmen handcuffed the Christians and drove away with them.

“They were 15 armed and masked men who came in four vehicles. They had a list of full names of Christians in the building. While checking IDs, Muslims were left aside while Christians were grabbed,” Aziz said, adding that he survived simply because he didn’t open his door.

“I heard my friends screaming but they were quickly shushed at gunpoint. After that, we heard nothing,” said Aziz who said he has three relatives among the hostages. “I am still in my room waiting for them to take me. I want to die with them,” he added.

Abu Makar, a Coptic priest in the workers’ hometown of Samalout in southern Egypt, confirmed the abduction took place. He said seven other Coptic Christians from Samalout were taken while trying to escape Sirte a few days earlier.

Sirte has become a safe haven for extremist groups like Ansar Al Shariah, blamed for the September 2013 attack on the US Consulate in Benghazi that killed US ambassador Chris Stevens.

The abduction came on the heels of the killing of a Coptic couple — who used to work as doctors in Sirte— and their daughter.

There was no immediate comment from the Egyptian government.
Perhaps because it approves...
Who would they complain to? It's not like the so-called government controls that part of the country.
On Wednesday, the Foreign Ministry said that it is following up on the case of the first group of seven abducted Christians. In March, the bodies of seven Christian Egyptians were found in the eastern city of Benghazi, killed by gunshots to the head while handcuffed.

In March 2013, dozens of Coptic Christians were tortured inside a detention centre run by a powerful militia in Benghazi. The men, who were suspected of proselytizing, were rounded up in a market by gunmen who checked their right wrists for tattoos of crosses, a common mark worn by many Egyptian Christians.

Egyptians became a top target for the militias after the Egyptian government began supporting the Libyan army battling militants.

“We are witnessing a pattern of persecution against Christians in Egypt; I fear for the lives of the hostages,” said Magdi Malak, a Cairo-based activist involved in the case.

At least 15 killed in 'Boko Haram' attack on Cameroon bus
[Ynet] At least 15 people have been killed in an attack by suspected Boko Haram

snuffies on a bus in northern Cameroon
...a long, narrow country that fills the space between Nigeria and Chad on the northeast, CAR to the southeast. Prior to incursions by Boko Haram nothing ever happened there...
, a senior local security official and a businessman said on Saturday.

Over the last year, Boko Haram, which has killed thousands in its struggle to create a caliphate in northern Nigeria, has stepped up attacks on both sides of the border, forcing Cameroon to dispatch thousands of troops to its north.

"Boko Haram elements on Thursday attacked a bus that was transporting many passengers from Kousseri to Maroua and killed 25 persons on the spot," said a senior officer in the military's BIR rapid reaction unit deployed in the region.

Boko Haram seizes 40 boys, men in northern Nigeria
[DAWN] Suspected Boko Haram

gunnies have kidnapped 40 boys and young men in a remote village in northeast Nigeria
... a particularly crimson stretch of Islam's bloody border...
n Borno state on New Year's Eve, residents who fled the isolated settlement said on Saturday.

Scores of Boko Haram Death Eaters stormed the Malari village and whisked away the males, aged between 10 and 23, into the nearby Sambisa forest, believed to be one of the Islamists' major bases.

The news of the abductions came out only days later, when residents who fled the village arrived in the state capital Maiduguri late on Friday.

?They came in pick-up trucks armed with guns and gathered all the men in the village outside the home of the village chief where they preached to us before singling out 40 of our boys and taking them away,? Bulama Muhammad told AFP

Malari village lies 20 kilometres (12.5 miles) from the Sambisa forest and close to the town of Gwoza, which the Death Eaters captured last June declaring it part of their caliphate.

?My two sons and three nephews were among those taken away by the Boko Haram gunnies and we believe they are going to use them as conscripts,? Muhammad said.

?When we heard of the kidnap of 40 boys in Malari by Boko Haram we decided to leave because we could be the next target,? said Alaramma Babagoni, who fled from the nearby village of Mulgwi.

There was no immediate comment on the incident from the military in Maiduguri.

Boko Haram is still holding in captivity more than 200 schoolgirls it kidnapped from their school in Chibok in Borno state last April.

Houthi chief threatens to seize oil-rich Yemen province
The head of Yemen’s Houthi militia threatened on Saturday to take control of the oil-rich Marib province, targeted by the group since it seized the capital and central areas three months ago.

“If official authorities do not assume their responsibilities, (we) will act to support the honourable people of Marib,” Abdelmalek Al Houthi said in a televised address to supporters in Sanaa.

Yemen has been dogged by instability since an uprising forced longtime strongman Ali Abdullah Saleh from power in 2012, with Huthi rebels and Al Qaeda seeking to fill the power vacuum.

The Houthis, also known as Ansarullah, overran Sanaa unopposed in September and have since advanced into mainly Sunni parts of the country. They have been met with fierce resistance by Al Qaeda and Sunni tribal fighters.

Houthi accused “certain” tribesmen of wanting to hand over Marib to “Al Qaeda and the takfiris,” a reference to the Islamist Al Islah movement that has fought alongside Al Qaeda’s Yemen franchise against the Shia group.

On Thursday, Sunni tribesmen ambushed a military convoy travelling between Marib and Sanaa and seized heavy weapons they claimed were destined for the Houthis, tribal sources and witnesses said. Three soldiers died during ensuing clashes, according to Yemen’s High Security Commission, which demanded late Friday that the tribesmen return the seized equipment.

Man shouting "God is Great" tries to strangle French policeman
[Telegraph] A man has tried to strangle a police officer while shouting "Allahu Akbar" (God is great), the latest in a spate of attacks in France that have heightened fears of terrorism.

The latest assault took place in the eastern city of Metz on Friday when a man arrested for bag-snatching asked the officer to bring him a glass of water.

When the policeman opened his cell door, the 23-year-old lunged at him and tried to throttle him while shouting "Allahu Akbar".

Other police officers saw the events on the video surveillance system and rushed to save their colleague, who had been thrown to the ground. His assailant was said to have a history of psychiatric problems.
Clearly the new fashion among the mentally unstable is jihad, replacing Napoleon, alien abduction, Satan, and radio waves. That other lone wolves will turn out to be highly connected to known jihad groups ought not to be ignored.

Accused plotter of U.S. embassy bombings beyond recidivism in N.Y.
[USATODAY] More than a year after his dramatic capture in Libya, an accused al-Qaeda operative charged in the 1998 U.S. embassy bombings in Africa died Friday in federal custody after a long illness.

Federal prosecutors in New York confirmed the death of Abu Anas al-Libi, 50, in a brief letter Saturday to U.S. District Judge Lewis Kaplan. His trial had been set to start Jan. 12.

Al-Libi was taken to a New York area hospital Wednesday "due to sudden complications arising out of his long-standing medical problems,'' U.S. Attorney Preet Bharara wrote. The medical problems were related to liver surgery.

"Despite the care provided at the hospital, his condition deteriorated rapidly, and al-Libi passed away yesterday evening,'' Bharara's letter said.

Bharara informed Kaplan that the suspect's attorney, Bernard Kleinman, and a local Imam was with al-Libi throughout the day. Kleinman was not immediately available for comment Saturday morning.

On Saturday, his wife, who asked to be identified as Um Abdullah, told The Associated Press that her husband's capture and detention worsened his ailments, including hepatitis C, leading to his death.

"I accuse the American government of kidnapping, mistreating and killing an innocent man. He did nothing," Um Abdullah said.

Al-Libi's wife told the Associated Press that her husband underwent liver surgery three weeks ago, went into a coma and was moved prematurely back to prison where he suffered complications.

Suspect killed in clash between rival gangs
[DAWN] A suspected gangster was killed and three others were maimed in an armed clash between rival gangs in Lyari
...one of the eighteen constituent towns of the city of Karachi. It is the smallest town by area in the city but also the most densely populated. Lyari has few schools, substandard hospitals, a poor water system, limited infrastructure, and broken roads. It is a stronghold of ruling Pakistan Peoples Party. Ubiquitous gang activity and a thriving narcotics industry make Lyari one of the most disturbed places in Karachi, which is really saying a lot....
on Friday evening, police said.

They said that both sides traded heavy gunfire in the Singu Lane area for half an hour.

The dead and maimed were gangsters, claimed Kalakot SHO Safdar Mashwani.

He identified the dear departed as Mohammed Hanif, an alleged member of the Uzair Baloch gang.

The condition of one of the three maimed was stated to be critical.

"The fighting erupted again after a lull because of the withdrawal of police from Lyari areas for security of Eid-e-Miladun Nabi congregations in Mithadar and Kharadar," said City SP Aftab Nizamani.

He added that contingents of coppers had been redeployed in the trouble-hit areas.

India: "fishing boat" had no nets
Follow-up from yesterday.
Ahmedabad: Even as Pakistan rejected India’s claim that the crew of a Pakistani fishing boat blew up and sank their vessel on the New Year eve, the Indian Coast Guard said on Saturday that the four people on board did not look like fishermen and wore t-shirts and half pants and also the trawler did not have any fishing nets.
Maybe they used poles...
Kuldip Sharon, Coast Guard Commander of the North-West Region headquartered in Gandhinagar near Ahmedabad, told journalists that all central agencies were investigating the incident with three Dornier aircraft were patrolling the Arabian Sea.

“A search operation is on for the bodies of the crew members and wreckage of the vessel”, he said.

A defence ministry statement had claimed on Friday that a Pakistani fishing boat laden with explosives was intercepted by the Coast Guard at a point 365km from Gujarat’s Porbandar on the intervening night of December 31 and January 1 after a hot pursuit for 90 minutes, adding that the four crew members blew up the vessel which later sank at the same spot.
"Which spot?"
"THAT spot!"
Recounting the incident, the Coast Guard said that it received intelligence input at around 8.30 in the morning of December 31 about the suspicious boat.

“We dispatched our aircraft and ships in that direction and by 1 in the afternoon, we had identified the ship. Around midnight, our vessel reached near the boat and tried to stop it. But instead of surrendering, the boat started moving in a zig-zag way and switched off lights. We chased it for about one-and-a-half hours”, said Commander Sharon.

“After the hot pursuit, we fired warning shots, but the boat did not stop. We fired more warning shots. After some time, the crew of the boat set it on fire and later it sank with them (occupants),” the officer said.

He said vigilance along the Gujarat coast had been stepped up after the boat incident and also in view of the two upcoming high-profile events in Gandhinagar--Pravasi Bharatiya Divas (January 7 to 9) and Vibrant Gujarat Global Investors’ Summit (January 11 to 13).

Report: Palestinians to join Interpol
[Ynet] The Paleostinian news agency Ma'an reported that the PA has decided to join the International Criminal Police Organization, widely known as Interpol.
This should prove an educational experience all around... assuming Interpol accepts them, of course, non-state that they are.
An official from the PA's Ministry of Interior said the move would result in several international benefits for Paleostine, including the ability to take part in fighting cross-border crimes
...drug smuggling, weapons smuggling, people smuggling...
and fighting terrorism,
...but only when the Israelis can be blamed. When Palestinians do such things, it's resistance...
money laundering,
...see above...
corruption, arms trade, and human trafficking, according to the report.
Teachable moments all over the place.
The source said joining would also benefit the Paleostinian police as they would receive training courses, expertise, and information from the organization.
The same training they've received from the Americans and Europeans, but that's ok. The basics can't be repeated too often.

Palestinian Fisherman Critically Wounded by Israeli Gunfire
[AnNahar] A Paleostinian fisherman was severely maimed on Saturday after the Israeli navy shot up his vessel off the coast of Rafah in the southern Gazoo Strip.

?A fisherman was critically maimed and admitted to the hospital,? a Paleostinian medical source said.

Witnesses said that the boat was completely destroyed by direct rockets.

Around 4,000 fishermen work in Gazoo, but more than half live below the poverty line.

The waters off Rafah town straddling the Gazoo-Egypt border have become an increasingly important smuggling route since Egyptian security forces destroyed a network of tunnels under the border.

Southeast Asia
Soldier Killed, 3 Hurt in Rebel Raids in Philippines
[AnNahar] A soldier was killed and three others maimed when Moslem rebels simultaneously attacked military detachments in two southern Philippine provinces on Saturday, a military spokeswoman said.

An hour-long shootout broke out when separatist rebel group Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom Fighters
...a MILF splinter group aligned with the Islamic State...
raided a camp in President Quirino town in Sultan Kudarat province shortly after midnight, Captain Jo-ann Petinglay said in a statement.

The BIFF, which opposes current peace talks between the country's main Moslem rebel group and the government, also launched an attack on a camp in General Salipada K. Pendatun town in Maguindanao province, she said.

The raids were meant to sabotage the negotiations, Petinglay said, adding that the separatists "will continually be a potent spoiler to peace".

The BIFF split from the country's main Moslem rebel group, the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF), in 2008 to fight for a separate Islamic state in the mainly Catholic Philippines.

It made no comment about Saturday's attacks.

The military had also blamed the BIFF for a bus bombing in the south in December that claimed 10 lives, and an ambush in November that killed an army major and two of his men.

The MILF signed a peace deal with President Benigno Aquino's government in March last year, paving the way for an expansion of the current autonomous Moslem region.

Syria-Lebanon-Iran
Fierce Flita Clashes Leave 5 Hizbullah Fighters, 6 Nusra Militants Dead
[AnNahar] The al-Qaeda-affiliated al-Nusra
...the current nom de guerre of al-Qaeda in the Levant, which isn't to be confused with al-Qaeda in Iraq and the Levant...
Front has attacked posts controlled by Hizbullah
...Party of God, a Leb militia inspired, founded, funded and directed by Iran. Hizbullah refers to itself as The Resistance and purports to defend Leb against Israel, with whom it has started and lost one disastrous war to date, though it did claim victory...
and the Syrian Army in the town of Fleita in the Syrian Qalamun region on Saturday, killing five Hizbullah members and several Syrian soldiers while sustaining six deaths.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported Saturday that ?fierce festivities are ongoing since early morning between Hizbullah and the Syrian Army on one side and al-Nusra
...formally Jabhat an-Nusrah li-Ahli sh-Sham (Support Front for the People of the Levant), also known as al-Qaeda in the Levant. They aim to establish a pan-Arab caliphate. Not the same one as the Islamic State, though .. ...
Front on the other in Qalamun's Flita outskirts.?

According to LBCI TV, al-Nusra Front turbans attacked the positions overnight.

Al-Nusra stated on the twitter account of its Qalamun branch that ?the Front took control of Hizubllah's al-Masroub post in Flita's outskirts.?

Hizbullah-run al-Manar TV however denied al-Nusra's claims and reported that ?the shelling was focused on al-Masroub post in Flita, but the al-Nusra attack was not surprising.?

?The festivities went on for hours but the attack was eventually repulsed and the gunnies retreated to Tal al-Hariq, after Arclight airstrikes by the Syrian army on al-Nusra's posts in Khirbat Mira and Wadi Martbiyyeh, which left 6 dead and 17 injured."

Reports also stated that Hizbullah members Ali Bakri, Fadl Faqih, Hamza Ammar, Mohammed al-Hajj Hassan and Hadi Hassan Nour al-Din were killed in the battles.

Meanwhile,
...back at the the conspirators' cleverly concealed hideout the long-awaited message arrived. They quickly got to work with their decoder rings...
al-Nusra announced on Twitter that its fighters planted landmines near posts controlled by Hizbullah and the Lebanese army.

?The engineering team planted mines in the areas near the Iranian (Hizbullah) and the Nusayri (Syrian) army in Qalamun,? the group said in a tweet.

LBCI later reported that heavy festivities erupted between Hizbullah and al-Nusra Front on the outskirts of Flita.

Flita is just across the Lebanese border to Arsal, a crossing point 20 kilometers to the northwest which rebels and refugees have used regularly.

Hizbullah is a close ally of the Syrian regime and has been fighting alongside government troops against an uprising there.

Its involvement has helped the army to recapture key territory, but drawn the ire of many in Leb.

The Lebanese army has been battling the Syria-based Islamist turbans who are entrenched on the mostly non-existent border between Leb and Syria since several months.
